Chairman’s Message
Dear ARTBA Member,
Our theme is “Talkin’ in Memphis.” And we want you to join us for the
conversation!
Register today for the 2012 ARTBA National Convention, scheduled for
September 11-14. If you take action before July 1, we’ll take $110 off the
price as part of ARTBA’s 110th anniversary special.
We’ve got a slate of top notch speakers, including Scott McKain, one of
only 150 living members of the Professional Speakers Hall of Fame and an
expert on brand differentiation. As a best-selling author of several business
books, he will reveal how to create more compelling connections between
you and your customers, and how to stand out and move up, regardless of
the economic climate.
Bill Logue, president and chief executive officer of FedEx Freight
Corporation, will share the company vision for the nation’s transportation
network. He’ll also provide the “inside scoop” on how FedEx is able to move
1.5 million packages daily, on 42 miles of conveyor belts, at its hub at the
Memphis Airport. John Schroer, Tennessee’s transportation commissioner,
will be on hand to provide a report on the state’s infrastructure plans and
potential market opportunities. Finally, we will also have two days of educa-
tion training during the September 11-12 “Safety Leadership Workshop.”
Our convention hotel is the Peabody Memphis, a magnificent Forbes
Four-Star, AAA Four-Diamond, historic property, which has been described
as “legendary, charming, elegant and grand.” It’s located just steps from
key attractions like the Memphis Rock ‘N Soul Museum, National Civil
Rights Museum and Sun Studio. The world-famous Peabody Ducks will be
on hand as they march to and from the Grand Lobby daily at 11 a.m. and 5
p.m., in a time-honored tradition dating back to 1933.
Elvis will be in the house, too! Well, not really. But we will be in his when we
visit Graceland for the ARTBA Political Action Team Reception. 2012 marks
the 35th anniversary of the King’s death and his daughter, Lisa Marie, has
just unveiled a new exhibit of items to mark the occasion. You will have the
opportunity to tour the mansion.
Finally, on a very special Thursday evening, September 13, Tennessee
contractor Steve Wright will be installed as the new ARTBA chairman. This
is a major milestone in ARTBA history as Steve becomes the first graduate
of the Young Executive Development Program to be elected chairman.
Special thanks to our host, the Tennessee Road Builders Association and
its chief executive, Kent Starwalt, for their financial support and outstand-
ing leadership in developing this year’s convention and spouse programs.
My wife, Anita, and I look forward to seeing you in the Blues City!

Legend of the Peabody Ducks
How did the tradition of the ducks in The Peabody fountain
begin?
Back in 1932 Frank Schutt, general manager of The Peabody,
and a friend, Chip Barwick, returned from a weekend hunting
trip to Arkansas. The men had a little too much Jack Daniel’s
Tennessee sippin’ whiskey, and thought it would be funny to
place some of their live duck decoys (it was legal then for hunt-
ers to use live decoys) in the beautiful Peabody fountain.
Three small English call ducks were selected as “guinea pigs,”
and the reaction was nothing short of enthusiastic. Soon, five
North American Mallard ducks would replace the original
ducks.
In 1940, Bellman Edward Pembroke, a former circus animal
trainer, offered to help with delivering the ducks to the foun-
tain each day and taught them the now-famous Peabody Duck
March. Mr. Pembroke became the Peabody Duckmaster, serv-
ing in that capacity for 50 years until his retirement in 1991.
The original ducks have long since gone, but after 75 years, the
marble fountain in the hotel lobby is still graced with ducks.
The Peabody ducks march at 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. daily.
Register: www.artbanationalconvention.org 5
The Peabody Ducks have been
a must-see Memphis attrac-
tion for Lisa Marie Presley,
Michael Jordan, Nicholas Cage,
Priscilla Presley, Don King,
President Jimmy Carter, Faith
Hill and Tim McGraw, Justin
Timberlake, and Jeff Bridges.
In addition, Patrick Swayze,
Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King,
Florence Henderson, Emeril
Lagasse, Joan Collins, Molly
Ringwald, Chris Matthews,
Paula Deen, Larry King, and
Kevin Bacon have been “honor-
ary duckmasters.”
The Peabody Ducks are five
North American mallards—one
drake (male) with white collar
and green head, and four hens
(females) with less colorful
plumage.
Duck is not served anywhere at
The Peabody, and has not been
seen on the hotel’s menus since
1981 reopening, quite possibly
making Chez Philippe the only
French restaurant in the world
that does not serve duck.
The Peabody Ducks do not have
individual names. The hotel rec-
ognizes that its resident water-
fowl are wild animals, not pets.
However, the very first team of
ducks were Peabody, Gayoso,
and Chisa—named for the three
hotels owned by the Memphis
Hotel Company in 1932.
The Peabody’s lobby fountain is
cut from one enormous piece
of travertine marble made and
shipped from Italy for the ho-
tel’s 1925 opening. The colorful
flowers adorning the top of the
fountain are changed out every
other day in the middle of the
night.
When off-duty from the Lobby,
the ducks live in their Royal
Duck Palace on the hotel’s
rooftop.
The Peabody Marching Ducks
have appeared on “The Tonight
Fun Facts
Show” with Johnny Carson,
“Sesame Street,” when Bert
and Ernie celebrated Rubber
Ducky Day, “The Oprah Winfrey
Show,” and in “People maga-
zine” and the “Sports Illustrat-
ed” swimsuit issue.
The Peabody Ducks are raised
by a local farmer and a friend
of the hotel. Each team lives in
the hotel for only three months
before being retired from their
Peabody duties and returned to
the farm to live the remainder
of their days as wild ducks.

Held in conjunction with the ARTBA National Convention, the “Safety Leadership Workshop” will be chock-
full of “state-of-the-practice” training and information for senior company officers, project managers, safety
professionals and others who recognize the critical linkages between safety and production. You’ll also earn
Professional Development Hours (PDHs).
Industry leaders whose companies have developed award-winning safety programs will spearhead interac-
tive sessions. Winners of the annual ARTBA Contractor Safety Awards will tell you what they are doing to
achieve the lowest injury rates and insurance modifiers in the industry.
In the “Best of the Best in Safety Academy,” listen to Bob Johnson, ARTBA Safety Committee Chair and
safety director for Granite Construction Inc., and other industry leaders, share the “secrets of success” in
managing programs for some of the largest contractors in the nation—with some of the most consistent,
safety records. ARTBA’s top safety expert, Brad Sant, will also highlight the training programs available to
industry professionals through several federal government contracts. And don’t forget to bring your laptop
to receive and be instructed on how to use one of the most effective safety training programs ever designed
for this industry.
As a bonus, you’ll be able to participate in some of the general sessions and other events of the ARTBA

Today’s musical journey begins with

their first records here, as did Elvis
Presley. The studio was restored by
Sam Phillips, and in 1987 opened
its doors as both a tourist attrac-

Sun Studio has played host to the
diverse talents of artists like Ringo

When you visit the Cotton Museum, you are treading on the legendary floor
of the Memphis Cotton Exchange, which is where cotton traders once stood
at the center of the global cotton economy. Until recently, no one was al-

Now this spectacular room is open to the public. It has been painstakingly
restored and is devoted to sharing the story of cotton—the crop that cre-
ated empires, transformed American culture and changed the history of a
nation and the world.

Mud Island River Park
Mud Island is more than just a
museum. The 52-acre park on Mud
Island is home to several attrac-
tions, including the River Walk and
the Mississippi River Museum. If
you have seen any pre-1900 photos
of the Memphis waterfront, you
may have noticed that Mud Island
is missing from the photos. This is-
land first appeared in 1900 and be-
came permanent in 1913. In 1916, it
joined with the mainland just north
of the mouth of the Wolf River, but a
diversion canal was dug through the
island to maintain a free channel in
the Wolf River.
