    About NRMP

The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) is a private, not-for-profitcorporation established in 1952 to provide a uniform date of appointment topositions in graduate medical education (GME). Five organizations sponsor theNRMP and nominate members to the Board of Directors:

American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS)American Medical Association (AMA)

Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)American Hospital Association (AHA)

Council of Medical Specialty Societies (CMSS)

In addition, there are three medical student members nominated by the AAMCOrganization of Student Representatives, the AMA Medical Student Section, andthe American Medical Student Association; three resident physicians selected

from at-large nominations; and one public member.

Each year, the NRMP conducts a Match that is designed to optimize the rank-ordered choices of applicants and program directors. In the third week of March, the results of the Match are announced.

The NRMP is not an application processing service; rather, it provides animpartial venue for matching applicants' and programs' preferences for eachother. Each year, approximately 16,000 U.S. allopathic medical school studentsparticipate in the Match. In addition, another 20,000 "independent" applicants

compete for the approximately 25,000 available residency positions.Independent applicants include former graduates of U.S. allopathic medicalschools, U.S. osteopathic students/graduates, Canadian students/graduates, andstudents/graduates of international medical schools.

In 2011, the NRMP enrolled 4,235 programs, which altogether offered 26,158positions. A total of 37,735 applicants registered for the Match. Of those, 16,893were 2011 graduates of accredited U.S. allopathic medical schools and 20,842were independent applicants.

    How the NRMP Process Works

Because it provides a uniform date for decisions about residency selection forboth applicants and residency training programs, the NRMP eliminates thepressure that might otherwise fall upon applicants and programs to makedecisions before all their options are known. The Match Participation Agreementcontains the policies and procedures developed to accomplish this objective and

should be reviewed carefully. The NRMP can best accomplish its goals whenevery program involved in the selection of applicants participates fully in theMatch.

Since January 1998, an applicant-proposing algorithm has been used in all NRMPmatches. Offers made to applicants by the various programs are determined bythe applicants' preference lists (rank order lists). Applicants match into theprogram listed highest on their list(s) that also ranked the applicant and that didnot fill all available positions with applicants the program preferred asdetermined by its rank order list.

There is one cardinal rule for both programs and applicants: neither must askthe other prior to the Match to make a commitment as to how each will beranked. Each party may express interest in the other; however, questions abouthow each will rank the other must be avoided and must not be solicited. Neitherprograms nor applicants should consider the others comments about interest ascommitments. Candor and honesty are important for both programs andapplicants.

Applicants who register for the Main Residency Match and who are either (1)

withdrawn by the NRMP or (2) unmatched or partially matched after thematching algorithm has been processed may be eligible to participate in theMatch Week Supplemental Offer and Acceptance program (SOAP). SOAP is anordered process whereby eligible applicants attempt to obtain positions inprograms that did not fill all their positions.

The Role of the NRMP in Medical Education

The NRMP is not a centralized application service for graduate medicaleducation programs and cannot advise applicants in selecting specialties orprograms. The NRMP is a mechanism for matching applicants to programsaccording to the preferences expressed by both parties in their final certified rank

    order lists.

Types of Positions Offered through the NRMP Residency Match

Categorical (C) positions are in programs that expect applicantswho enter in their first post-graduate year to continue until theyhave completed all training required for specialty certification, provided their performance is satisfactory. Primary categoricalprograms in medicine and pediatrics are designated by (M).

Preliminary (P) or PGY-1 positions provide one or two years ofprerequisite training for entry into an advanced position inspecialty programs that require one or more years of broad clinicaltraining. Internal medicine, surgery, and transitional programscommonly offer preliminary positions.

Advanced (A) or PGY-2 positions begin in the year after the Matchand require completion of one or more years of preliminarytraining. Applicants without prior graduate medical education canapply for these positions while also applying for preliminarypositions that are compatible with their plans.

Physician (R)positions are reserved for physicians who havealready completed some graduate medical education. Physicianpositions are not available to senior U.S. medical students.

    About Residency

    The Application Process

Candidates must apply to the programs of their choice by requesting applications directly

from the programs or by using the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).

ERAS is the Electronic Residency Application Service administered by the AAMC to

transmit via the Internet residency applications, personal statements, recommendationletters, MSPEs (Medical Student Performance Evaluation), transcripts, and other

supporting credentials from medical schools to residency program directors.

Candidates are responsible for requesting letters of recommendation, ordering transcripts,

and forwarding other materials directly to each program by the deadline established by

    each program.

Programs may require graduates of U.S. medical schools accredited by the Liaison

Committee on Medical Education (LCME) to provide copies of their MSPE. This

document is the standard recommendation prepared for graduating seniors by U.S.

medical schools. Graduates of non-LCME accredited medical schools will be expected

to provide an alternative to the MSPE from individuals capable of evaluating theirpotential as physicians. Program directors review candidates' credentials and, if

    interested, invite them for interviews.

Applicants are responsible for ensuring that they meet all program prerequisites and

institutional employment conditions as provided by the program during the interview.

The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) serves as the

ERAS coordinator for students and graduates of international medical schools. Refer to

the ERAS web site for more information (http://www.aamc.org/eras).

Please note: Registering with ERAS does not register applicants with the NRMP.Applicants must register separately with each service.

    Communications with Applicants

Program directors review candidates' credentials and, if interested, invite them for

interviews. The NRMP encourages frank and open discussion between applicants and

program directors during the interview process. Applicants and programs are responsible

for the completeness, timeliness, and accuracy of information exchanged during the

    application process.

Programs must provide complete and accurate information to interviewees, including a

copy of the contract the applicant will be expected to sign if matched to the program and

all institutional policies regarding eligibility for appointment to a residency or fellowship

position. This information must be communicated to interviewees in writing prior to the

rank order list certification deadline and the program should obtain a signed

acknowledgement from each applicant who interviews.

The ranking of an applicant by a program or of a program by an applicant establishes a

binding commitment between them should they be matched. Appointments are

dependent upon applicants meeting all eligibility and employment requirements in effect

at the time of the rank order lists deadline shown on the Schedule of Dates for the Match.Institutional policies take precedence over the results of the Match.

The Match Participation Agreement does not preclude one party from expressing interest

in the other. It is not a violation for an applicant or a program to volunteer how one will

rank the other; however, any attempt to request such information is a violation of the

Match Participation Agreement. Verbal or written statements implying a commitment

should not be solicited, nor should applicants be required to reveal the names or identities

of programs to which they have or may apply. Rank order lists take precedence over

    verbal commitments.

Summary of Guidelines for the Preparation of Applicant Rank Order Lists

    1. Applicants are advised to rank ONLY those programs that represent theirtrue preferences.

    2. Programs should be ranked in sequence, according to the applicants truepreferences and not based on what the applicant perceives to be his or herchances of matching to a particular program.

    3. Factors to consider in determining the number of programs to rankinclude the competitiveness of the specialty, the competition for thespecific programs being ranked, and the applicant's qualifications. Inmost instances, the issue is not the actual number of programs on the rankorder list, but whether to add one or more additional programs to the listin order to reduce the likelihood of being unmatched.

    4. Applicants are advised to rank all programs deemed acceptable to theapplicant, i.e., programs where they would be happy to undertakeresidency training. Conversely, if an applicant finds certain programsunacceptable and is not interested in training at those programs, theprogram(s) should not be included on the applicants rank order list.

    Couples Rank Order Lists

Each partner of a couple enrolls individually in the Match and indicates in the R3System that they want to be included in the Match as part of a couple. (Refer topage45for information on how to register as a member of a couple.) The NRMPallows couples to form pairs of choices on their primary rank order lists, which

are then considered in rank order in the Match. The couple will match to themost preferred pair of programs where each partner has been offered a position.

Couples can be matched into a combination of programs suited to their personalneeds. In creating pairs of programs, couples can mix specialties, program types(preliminary or transitional, categorical, and advanced), and geographiclocations. The partners can be matched into positions in the same institution orin different institutions. Unlike single applicants, members of a couple may list aprogram more than once on the primary rank order list if the corresponding rankon the partners list is for a different program.

By clicking View/Print Partners ROL you are able to view your partners rankorder list.

Each partner must have the same number of ranks. Each ranked program mustbe paired with an active program or with an indication of "No Match" (NRMPProgram Code = 999999999) by the other partner, which means that one partneris willing to go unmatched if the other matches to a position in the programdesignated at that rank.

If a partner's rank is for an advanced position, a supplemental rank order list forthat program also must be prepared by that partner, unless the required first-year program already has been completed. If both partners rank advancedpositions, each partner must prepare separate supplemental rank order lists. Thechoices should be geographically acceptable to both partners.

If both partners match to advanced programs, their supplemental rank orderlists are not treated as a unit in the Match. The coupling function is done onlyfor the primary rank order lists of the two partners. Any supplemental listswill be considered individually and not paired with the partnerscorresponding supplemental list. Therefore, it is wise for partners to createsupplemental lists based upon geography.

If one partner wishes to withdraw from the Match, both partners mustuncouple prior to withdrawal. The other partner's rank order list must be re-certified and will remain in the R3 System to be used in the Match as a singlecandidate. Couples are encouraged to complete couples worksheets beforeentering choices in the R3 System. Partners registered as a couple are treatedstrictly as a couple. If they do not obtain matches as a couple, the matchingalgorithm will not run their lists separately to find a possible match for eachindividual.
