One day you will have a lot of stories to tell about your university experience. Stories about people you met, classes you took and things you did.

Today you probably have a lot of questions about your university experience. Where will you go? Who will you meet? What experiences will stick with you? What will your future look like?

As Alberta’s Destination University, the University of Lethbridge gives you room to think, create and explore, providing a university experience unlike any other.

Discover your passion with exceptional flexibility, encouragement and support.

The University of Lethbridge has campuses in Calgary, Edmonton and Lethbridge.

In 2011, the U of L retained its fourth-place finish in the annual Maclean’s ranking of Canadian universities. In addition to gains in overall reputation and the amount of funding directed to student services and humanities research, the institution saw 94 per cent and 95 per cent of respondents agreeing or strongly agreeing on “overall satisfaction” and “would you choose the U of L again?’” questions asked as part of a national survey.

What makes a university experience? You.

We know not everyone wants the same things out of life. You have your own ideas of success and are looking for a university experience that will help you reach your goals.

At the U of L, you define your own direction so that your education gets you where you want to go. With more than 150 program/major options offered on our campuses in Lethbridge, Calgary and Edmonton, you can explore what interests you, whether it be art and business, psychology and public health, or neuroscience and anthropology. Our liberal arts philosophy helps you build a solid foundation of the skills essential to your success.

So go ahead, explore new areas and follow your passions at the same time. Whatever you choose, you can count on learning valuable career-based skills along the way.

Each year, more than 1,000 new transfer students choose the U of L. Coming from all walks of life, they join a diverse community made up of 8,500 students from 90 countries around the world.

Our size is an advantage as you network with and learn from the people around you. Your fellow students will be a big part of your university experience, both in and out of the classroom. You can attend a public lecture with your new roommate, take in a performance at the University Theatre with your drama class or join the surf club on their annual trek to California.

And since the average class size at the U of L is just 32 students, meaningful, engaged interaction with your professors and your peers happens on a daily basis.

Looking for a hands-on experience? Work in the lab of a world-renowned researcher and put your knowledge to the test. In the Globe and Mail’s report, the U of L was judged to be first in research opportunities in its class and earned an “A” grade in five survey categories that measured student research opportunities and professors’ teaching styles, among other factors.

When he isn’t investigating global public health policies, Dr. Raphael Lencucha brings his professional prowess to the classroom as a professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences. And with a student-to-faculty ratio of 13:1, a brush with Dr. Lencucha can happen anywhere.

Our faculty members are world-renowned researchers. They’re also at the front of your classroom.

You’ll learn from some of the brightest minds in the world. You’ll have first-hand access to leading scientists, artists, entrepreneurs, economists, performers and health-care practitioners. They are active researchers and experts in their fields who bring their knowledge and professional experience straight to the classroom.

At the U of L, you’ll discover that our professors’ commitment to students is as impressive as their resumés.

Entering the workforce after graduation can be challenging. At the U of L, our co-operative education, applied studies and international exchanges let you explore your interests while connecting with employers and putting future careers to the test.

By alternating classroom learning with workplace experience, you can develop practical skills, gain valuable career contacts and maybe even make some money while you earn your degree.

Working side-by-side with leaders in every industry, from the Nature Conservancy of Canada and Electronic Arts Canada to Suncor Energy Ltd. and the Canadian Space Agency, you won’t just learn about career prospects – you’ll make them a reality.

Want to get started right away? Co-op programs are available to transfer students the summer before they start classes.

With more than 34,000 alumni around the world, our graduates are shaping technology, writing policy and dazzling audiences. Year after year, long past graduation, our alumni take the knowledge and talent they gained at the U of L to new levels.

Some aspects of university life are universal – you’ll meet new people, explore career options and probably spend a night or two cramming for exams.

But at the University of Lethbridge, we think getting a degree should be about more than that. Our approach to education allows you to create your own opportunities, both academically and socially. The result is an extraordinary experience that you can’t find anywhere else.

With progressive programs taught by professionally acclaimed faculty, coupled with a supportive environment and opportunities to enhance your education, the U of L offers an array of academic choices and is still flexible enough to ensure your degree reflects who you truly are – and want to be.

Entire careers are spent jockeying for a position with a national corporation. She’s only in her twenties, but Glenna Rauch (BMgt ’08) can already cross that off her list.

Currently working for EPCOR Utilities Inc. in Edmonton as a consultant, talent sourcing, Glenna admits her path wasn’t always so clear.

“I didn’t know what I wanted to do when I finished high school,” says Glenna, who grew up in the Edmonton area and decided to attend a local technical institute. “I was working on a business diploma when I finally figured out what I was good at and what I could see myself doing down the road.”

Having uncovered a career path that excited her, Glenna knew she needed to further her education in order to advance her career. Drawn to the program

flexibility at the University of Lethbridge Edmonton campus, she pursued a degree that would help her meet her goals.

“The instructors were industry leaders who shared their experience from the real world in the classroom,” says Glenna, who took advantage of the opportunity to network with professionals and experts in the business world. She also completed co-op placements with the City of Edmonton and the Government of Alberta, both of which provided valuable practical experience.

Tessa Keenan turned a passion for helping others into a rewarding career.

Most people who know Tessa Keenan (BHSc ’10) will tell you she’s a good listener. Tessa doesn’t disagree but she’s quick to point out that the University of Lethbridge addictions counselling program helped her hone her skills and gave her the experience she needed to turn a natural ability to help others into a rewarding career.

“Being in the addictions counselling program was one of the most incredible and valuable experiences of my life,” says Tessa, who transferred to the U of L in the fall of 2006 from Lethbridge College. “I started with the intention of learning how to help others and ended up learning a lot about myself in the process.”

In addition to traditional classroom work, the addictions counselling program incorporates lab work where students work with each other and instructors on group and individual counselling scenarios.

“You train in sessions with real people,” explains Tessa. “At times, it can be very raw but the people in the program are amazing. The instructors work really hard to keep you on track and, in the end, I felt ready to work with clients.”

Since graduating more than two years ago, Tessa has worked with at-risk youth throughout southern Alberta and is currently enrolled in the U of L’s new master of education in counselling psychology with a specific focus in addictions and mental health.

“The support I received in the addictions counselling program helped me grow as a professional and as an individual,” says Tessa, who is happy to return to the U of L to further her education. “It’s given me the confidence and ability to follow my passion and work toward a career that is truly fulfilling.”

Julian Spear Chief-Morris followed his game and scored big.

Lethbridge product Julian Spear Chief-Morris chose the University of Lethbridge hoping to put his stamp on the Pronghorns men’s basketball program. What he didn’t expect was that the U of L would leave its mark on him.

“I initially chose the U of L because I knew the basketball coach and I wanted to play at the elite level in my hometown,” says Julian.

After taking classes at the U of L, Julian began to reevaluate his approach to university. He decided to find out what interested him besides basketball.

“Finding a subject that I was excited about was a turning point in my education and maybe even my life,” reflects Julian, of changing his major to Urban

and Regional Studies more than three years ago. “That decision has shaped my educational and career goals.”

Today, Julian has hit his stride both on and off the court. He is a senior player on the men’s basketball team and is also excelling in the classroom, having been recognized as a Academic All-Canadian for maintaining an 80 per cent average in his studies.

“Playing Horns basketball has taught me a lot about teamwork, leadership and hard work,” says Julian. “Combined with what I’m learning in the classroom, I will be well prepared to take on whatever life throws at me.”

Your education isn’t just about what you learn in the classroom; it’s also about the experiences you have outside the classroom.

The U of L is committed to helping you explore your individual interests and expand your horizons through opportunities both locally and abroad.

Co-operative Education/Internships Where would you like to work? Build your resumé before you graduate by participating in the co-operative education program. Explore your interests while connecting with employers and putting future careers to the test.

By combining real-world work experience with academic studies, co-op helps you explore future employment possibilities through relevant paid work placements. The program works to create a partnership between students, the University and the employer, offering students an extended learning environment and opportunities to network with employers.

Applied Studies By integrating principles learned in the classroom with practical situations, the Applied Studies Program offers you the opportunity to earn academic credit through employment or volunteer experiences related to your field of study.

Independent Studies Available to all majors, independent studies allow students to explore their own interests within an area of study. There is a three-course sequencing guide, developed to help students first learn the necessary research and presentation

techniques. Next, students will participate in hands-on learning in the lab while assisting their professors or completing their own research.

International Exchanges Want a global perspective? Make the U of L the first stop on your world tour.

You can participate in an international exchange at one of our 22 partner institutions, complete a practicum or professional semester abroad, or participate in one of several international study tours and field schools. The opportunities allow you to earn credit toward your degree, and provide an incredible learning experience that will contribute to your personal, intercultural, academic and career development.
