Welcome...

At Tiffi n University, our students endeavour to excel in both the classroom and the athletic arena. Our athletic programs have enjoyed tremendous success in recent years with conference championships, teams being nationally ranked and challenging at national tournaments. There have been numerous individual accolades including All-Americans, and it is no small accomplishment that in the past few years we have set new standards of excellence with our individual and team academic achievements. We expect our student-athletes to be just as successful in the classroom. A recent self study conducted by the university indicated that, of all the athletes who completed their eligibility at Tiffin University in the last five years, 95% of those athletes graduated. While many colleges would be ecstatic with these results, we will never be content until it is 100%.

We are proud of our rich history and look forward to setting new milestones as we enter the NCAA Division II playing fi eld and the highly competitive Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. We are proud of our athletes and what they have accomplished. They have been the force behind the winning tradition that has been established, and I am confi dent the future will also be highly successful for Tiffi n University athletics.

Welcome to th i s a th l e t i c season a t Ti ff in Un ive r s i ty. I invite you to watch and cheer for all of our women’s and men’s teams. Intercollegiate athletics play an important role at Tiffi n University. The students who participate develop life-long friendships and learn leadership and teamwork skills, how to set goals and work hard to achieve those goals, how to deal with adversity, the importance of persistence, sportsmanship, and physical fi tness, and other skills and abilities that contribute to satisfying and productive lives and careers. Our athletic program also provides visibility and name recognition for TU, helps develop a sense of excitement, morale and school spirit on campus, and provides opportunities for students, employees, alumni, and supporters to unite behind a common goal. We are especially proud of the high standards of conduct displayed by our coaches and players on and off the fi eld.

The 2011-12 season saw the Tiffi n University wrestling team continue to make improvements. The Dragons fi nished 2-11, however they had eight individual top four fi nishes in tournaments. TU had never had a top four fi nish before.

At the end of February, Tiffi n fi nished ninth at the Super Regional and accomplished something never done before in school history. That feat was sending the fi rst two wrestlers to the NCAA Division II Championship Meet.

With 13 l e t t e r w i n n e r s including the top four on the team in wins returning, the 2012-13 season looks to be one of more improvements. Leading the charge are the two NCAA qualifi ers, sophomores Jake Cramer and Steven Pastor.

Cramer (174-lbs) was 25-11 and placed third at the super regionals to earn his trip to nationals. He set single-season school records in wins, takedowns (73) and points (406). Pastor (133-lbs) scored back-to-back pins to reach the super regional fi nal. He fi nished 12-17 with

three pins and scored 243 points.

Kevin Christman had a solid freshman season going 20-12 and led the team with fi ve pins. He will move up from 184-lbs. Senior Ryan McKenzie (141-lbs) was third on the squad with 13 wins. Juniors Kyle Begg and Trevor Nickolai and sophomore Aren Norman saw extensive action last season.

The Dragons will be helped by the return of junior Alek Hughes (197-lbs). He was 2-3 before suffering a season-ending injury last year. Two years ago, Hughes was 20-4 with seven pins and set school records in 2- and 3-point near falls. In addition, sophomore Walid Boggio (184-lbs) and junior Marco Gualtieri (141-lbs) return after red-shirting last year.

Tiffi n will welcome 17 w r e s t l e r s to the squad this season. F r e s h m a n Garrett Gray was the Ohio Division I state runner-up at 285-lbs for Oregon Clay HS. F r e s h m a n Drew Itnyre went 34-5 for St. Lucie West C e n t e n i a l HS (Fla.) and reached the Class 3A fi nal at 195-lbs.

Freshman Kyle Ferguson was a three-time Ohio Division III state qualifi er and went 158-36 for Manchester HS. Freshman Mike Screptock was a two-time Ohio Division I state placer at Oregon Clay HS. Freshman Ron Clore went 34-5 and placed fi fth at 189-lbs at the Division I meet as a senior for Hazel Park HS (Mich.).

Wrestling Practice FacilityOn Thursday, October 18, 2012, Tiffi n Universi-ty proudly hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for a brand new wrestling facility located just west of the Heminger Center on Miami Street.

The facility will serve as a "wrestling home" for the 48-man team and will help build the family environment that the young program has been developing. Intercollegiate matches will con-tinue to be held in the Gillmor Student Center on the main campus of Tiffi n University.

The new facility includes eight showers, a laun-dry room, a locker room, a strength/conditioning room, offi ces, and a large space for wrestling

practice with wall-to-wall mats. There are also areas designated for wrestlers to study before or after practice if they wish.

Head Coach Joey Simcoe is in his sec-ond full season with Tiffi n and is incred-ibly excited about this addition to cam-pus. "It is a great time to be a Dragon and this facility means everything to the program. The student-athletes now have every resource to be successful and we have a place that we can proudly call home. This is a wonderful recruit-ing tool and puts Tiffi n on a whole new level. We are all about family and stick-ing together and with this great facility, we can all practice at the same time and that is important."

According to TU President Paul Marion, "We are proud of our athletic program and the new wrestling practice facility is a great addition and should help our team be competitive in Division II of the NCAA."

"This facility is a welcome addition to our campus and will be a signifi cant asset to our wrestling program as they grow in stature in the region," said Athletic Direc-tor Lonny Allen. "It shows the continuing commitment of President Marion and the TU administration to pro-vide our student-athletes with exactly what they need to grow both in the classroom and athletically."
