2011-12 Season Preview
www.NorwichAthletics.com
Signs continue to be encouraging for the Norwich University wrestling program.
“I’m pleased with the numbers on the team,” Coach John Hartupee said about his 2011-12 Cadets. “With 40 guys plus
working out every day in our new room, it gives us the luxury of having some good battles for starting slots at each
weight.
“We have some individuals who could do some good things,” he added. “However, with that optimism, everybody is
aware there is still work to be done.”
Going weight-by-weight, Hartupee and the Maroon and Gold have the following prognosis…
125 – NU has three new faces looking for the top spot. Nate Ketchum (Camarillo, Calif.), Alex Stewart (Ellicott City,
Md.) and James Triebe (Barton, Vt.) are in the mix.
133 – Returning starter Kyle Brouillette, a sophomore from Dracut, Mass., is back. He will be challenged by former
125-pounder Robby Zyko, a sophomore from Staten Island, N.Y., according to Hartupee. “I also see R.J. Allen, a fresh-
man from Washington state, taking aim for some mat time, too,” NU’s head coach said.
141 – Norwich has multiple options with returner sophomore Terrell Carstarphen (Topeka, Ks.) and junior Josh Kernan
(Waterbury, Vt.), who could be at either 141 or 149, as the early frontrunners. “Alex Kwmuntis, a freshman from Massa-
chusetts, could also figure in,” Hartupee said. “This could be a strong weight.”
149 – Sophomore Evan Poole (Hewitt, N.J.) headlines another deep weight. He had a sparkling freshman campaign,
toppling the number five seed at the NEWA tournament before a concussion ended his run. “I’m hoping for big things
from Evan,” Hartupee said. “He will be one of our leaders.” Kernan could also figure in here along with junior Pat Mc-
Grath (Marshfield, Mass.) who joins the team after playing rugby this fall, and freshman Jacob Alderman (Lebanon, Ct.).
157 - Sophomore Dave Pinto (Milford, Mass.) is the early leader after a good freshman slate, according to Hartupee.
“Dave got out to a strong start last season, but an injury shelved him later,” Hartupee said. He also pointed to Alderman
and fellow freshman Nick Smith (Hanover, Mass.) as possibilities.
165 – Norwich’s head coach calls it his deepest weight. “We have five guys who could represent us,” Hartupee re-
marked. Leading the group is junior Abe Bray (Gold Bar, Va.) while freshman Cody Gladstone (Merrimack, N.H.) is close
behind. “What happens here early on may determine some weights below and above,” Hartupee said. “It’ll be interesting
to see this work itself out in the room.”
174 – Sophomore Chris Schenk (Newnan, Ga.) heads the list, while fellow sophomore Mike Babbin (Plymouth, Mass.)
is also an option, according to Hartupee. “Babbin is in the mix at 165 at, too, so this battle in practice will be another good
one,” he said.
184 – Sophomores Sam Kent (Keene, N.H.) and Charles Constantino (South Riding, Va.) are the early probables, ac-
cording to Hartupee. “They both saw some mat time last year,” he added. Senior Ray Gauthier (York, Me.) could also
make a move here.
197 – Gauthier, one of the team’s co-captains, is the front runner after starting last year.
Heavyweight – With seven to chose from, Hartupee mentioned senior co-captain Matt Ditolla (Nashua, N.H.) and
sophomores Anthony Joyce (Lincoln, R.I.) and Alex Lawrence (Ledyard, Ct.) as the front runners for the starter role. “I
think we may see these guys battling all year,” he said.
“As always, the New England Wrestling Association will be strong,” Hartupee said. “With teams like Springfield and
Johnson and Wales leading the way, I think any of six teams could make a push for the title.
“I’m excited for the year to get going,” he added. “I think there is some potential for us to continue to build positive re-
sults.”
NOTES – The 2011-12 season opens Friday and Saturday, Nov. 4 and 5, at the Ithaca Invitational. The early-season
tournament slate continues with trips to Roger Williams Nov. 12 and Cortland State Nov. 19. … NU’s dual season begins
Nov. 16 with a trip to Plymouth State, while Roger Williams kicks off the Maroon and Gold’s home campaign Dec. 10.
