Moneyball
Last night, I watched this "Moneyball" movie. It
was a quite ok movie. I like when in Hollywoodthey do proper movies: you watch them for twohours and you enjoy the story, the actors, songsand all the rest. Very decent.
Apart from that, the plot and things (based on atrue story) was also fascinating. A very odd choice:to make a movie starring Bred Pitt onsabermetrics. Very odd, very interesting, verynice. I know nothing about baseball but it was a
couple of hours really nice. I've got triggered onvarious thoughts and this doesn't happen often

And in order to buy wins, you
need to buy runs...
Last night I watched this "Moneyball" movie on theplane. Nice one. I would classify it within the
"freakonomics" family of things. Hard numbers toexplain silly things of life.
Freakonomics is a very nice book + website +movie + radioshow + a lot of other things. Here
you go: http://www.freakonomics.com/
And here some nice quotes from "Moneyball" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moneyball)

terms of buying players. Your goal shouldn't be tobuy players, your goal should be to buy wins.
And in order to buy wins, you need to buy runs.
You're trying to replace Johnny Damon. The BostonRed Sox see Johnny Damon and they see a starwho's worth seven and half million dollars a year.
When I see Johnny Damon, what I see is... is... animperfect understanding of where runs comefrom. The guy's got a great glove. He's a decentleadoff hitter. He can steal bases. But is he worththe seven and half million dollars a year that the
Boston Red Sox are paying him? No. No. Baseballthinking is medieval.
They are asking all the wrong questions. And if Isay it to anybody, I'm-I'm ostracized. I'm-I'm-I'm a
leper. So that's why I'm-I'm cagey about this withyou. That's why I... I respect you, Mr. Beane, andif you want full disclosure, I think it's a good thingthat you got Damon off your payroll. I think itopens up all kinds of interesting possibilities.

A Man on a Yellow Chair
Some nice chitchatting last night.
Sony may lose money on its television business in2011 for its eighth consecutive year. In November
it halved a previous sales forecast to 20mtelevisions. This might be a good thing: Sony loses$80 on every set it sells.
(The Economist, Jan 21/27)
Do you remember Sony? It was only ten years ago,but it looks a century
Neil Churcher says: Sony only made the one
mistake. That's all it takes.
Eh... Pretty good metaphor of how life works...

This (very true) concept is inscribed on MarcelDuchamp's tombstone.
In our case it wasn't people but fish, to be precise,a seabass.
Very good indeed. Here the visual of the whole sad
(but delicious) story: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/...
Besides, it's always other
people who die.

I feel shameful.
I was shaping up a little folder on Sori Yanagi, whodied about a month ago. Not so known in theWest, but actually one of the most influentialdesigner ever.
Actually, I have to admit that I am not reallyknowledgeable about design. I know things, butmuch less than I should. So, it was a nice opportunity to get to know some
more about this old chap.
Now, imagine I am here, trying to find the exactyear of production of his famous "butterfly" stool, and my eyes get on the "elephant" stool (picture
here above). In that moment I understand that Iam actually sitting on a Yanagi stool.
I come often to Racha's house and for years Ialways used and appreciated those stools without
knowing that I was sitting on a very important

piece of design.
Well, given the cost of Vitra's stuff, let's say I have
been sitting on a perfect reproduction of a veryimportant piece of design.
Not to mention that Yanagi designed this thingynot last week but in 1956. More than 50 years ago.
Very cool.

How many $$$ for your face?
If you are reading this, your face is not just a face. It's a fb face. And, since yesterday, it has a publicand given value.
If Facebook has 845 million users and it has an(apx) $100 billion valuation, that's $118 per face.
In this precise moment, me writing and youreading are defining a $236 (118 + 118) value for
the company.

I always thought of this idea of not smokingbecause otherwise you die, quite funny. Like if
non-smokers were not dying as well
Anyway. In Bangkok you can collect the cigarettespackages because they all carry some incrediblycool medical images (like the one here above).
The whole collection is made out of 12 images, one more fascinating than the other
"My voice is getting lower and lower because Igave up smoking" he said. "I expected it to rise but
it's gone the other way. I would like to take upsmoking again when I'm 80. I may be on the roadthen, and it's one of the things that invites me totour again - smoking on the road."

The Space of Writing
In these days there is a very nice exhibition on
Marcel Broodthaers at MAMbo in Bologna.
He is not so famous, but he is one of the mostinfluential artist of the European XXth Century.
Here some images of his works: http://www.facebook.com/media/set/
To start to understand him, you can listen to thisvery special interview. Mr. Broodthaersinterviewing a cat (in French & cats' language):http://www.ubu.com/sound/broodthaers.html
I love this quote:I, too, wondered whether I could not sellsomething and succeed in life. For some time I hadbeen no good at anything. I am forty years old...Finally the idea of inventing something insincerefinally crossed my mind and I set to workstraightaway. At the end of three months I showedwhat I had produced to Philippe EdouardToussaint, the owner of the Galerie St Laurent.

Top five regrets of the dying
A very nice article on the Guardian: a nurse hasrecorded the most common regrets of the dying, and among the top ones is 'I wish I hadn't worked
so hard'.
Here are the top five regrets of the dying:
1. I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to
myself, not the life others expected of me.
'But it is art' he said 'and I will willingly exhibit allof it.' 'Agreed' I replied. If I sell something, hetakes 30%. It seems these are the usual conditions,
some galleries take 75%. What is it? In fact it isobjects.

Nice exhibition at CCA: Alturas de Macchu Picchu:Martn Chambi lvaro Siza at work. Curated by
Fabrizio Gallanti, set a tension between Siza'ssketches and Chambi's
Generally I am not so fond of Campana's brotherswork. But this set up they did in Paris (where theywere awarded some "designer of the year" award)
is actually very nice.

Fabrizio writes:
Producing images means taking possession ofreality, appropriating what unfurls before our eyesand turning it into a subjective account. Some
modes of representation, although mechanical orotherwise considered objective, possess anarrative force that allow us to share anindividuals viewpoint. While we recognize afamilial resemblance with tangible objects a
wall, a tree, a face we often unconsciously skipover the action of the person who framed, carved, selected, or assembled it. The author who, inshort, composed the image.
