. T. Usha is an Indian athlete from the state of Kerala. P. T. Usha has been Passociated with Indian athletics since 1979. She is regarded as one of the greatest athletes India has ever produced and is often called the "queen of

Indian track and field". She is nicknamed the Payyoli Express. Currently she runs the Usha School of Athletics at Koyilandy in Kerala.

In 1976 the Kerala State Government started a Sports School for women, and she was chosen to represent her district.

Career

Humble beginnings, financial shortcomings, inadequate facilities... the odds against her have been as daunting as the competition which she has outpaced on the track

Her life started with struggle: Her earliest memories are those of jumping over fences as a child. Attempting the extraordinary was, perhaps, a natural offshoot of what was otherwise an ordinary childhood. Born to EPM Paithel and TV Lekshmi at Koothadi in Kozhikode on June 27, 1964, P T Usha grew up in Payyoli as the second of six children. Her father ran a small cloth store and they were never financially-secure. To top it all, one disease or the other kept plaguing her health. Her parents knew nothing about athletics, Forget about sports as a profession, even participating in races was not common among girls then.

In 1979 P. T. Usha participated in the National School Games, where she was noticed by O. M. Nambiar, who coached her throughout her career. Her debut in the 1980 Moscow Olympics proved lackluster. In the 1982 New Delhi Asiad, she got the silver medal in the 100m and the 200m, but at the Asian Track and Field Championship in Kuwait a year later, Usha took the gold in the 400m with a new Asian record From 1983-89, Usha garnered 13 gold at ATF meets.

At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, she finished first in the semi-finals of the 400 meters hurdles, but faltered in the finals. There was a nail-biting photo finish for the third place. Usha lost the bronze by 1/100th of a second. She became the first Indian woman (and the fifth Indian) to reach the final of an Olympic event by winning her 400m hurdles semi-final.

In the 10th Asian Games held at Seoul in 1986, P. T. Usha won 4 gold medals and 1 silver medal in the track and field events. Here she created new Asian Games records in all the events in which she participated. She won five gold at the 6th Asian Track and Field Championship at Jakarta in 1985. Her six medals at the same meet is a record for a single athlete in a single international meet

She has won 101 international medals so far. She is employed as an officer in the Southern Railways. In 1985, she was conferred Padma Shri and Arjuna Award.

The Amazing Comeback: Usha retired from Athletics and married V.Srinivasan in the year 1991, but to the surprise of everybody she made a sudden comeback in the year 1998 and won Bronze Medals in 200m and 400m races at the Asian Track Federation Meet held at Fukkowakka in Japan. At the age of 34 years, P.T. Usha improved her own timing in 200m race and set a new National Record, which was enough to prove the level of Athletic talent still lying inside her.

Currently she coaches young athletes at her training academy in Kerala,

including Tintu Luka, who was qualified for the women's semi-final 800m at the London 2012 Olympics.

• Master's Degree, Structural Engineering University of Roorkee

Dr. Anand Swarup Arya (1953) is specialist in Structural Engineering, Earthquake, Soil and Foundation Engineering, with a long and distinguished record of research, design and consultancy work. Recipient of the FICCI (Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry) award (1986) and the National Design Award of the Institution of Engineers (India) (1987). Participant in many UNESCO and other international activities, and member of many international delegations as expert in Earthquake Engineering. Director, International Association for Earthquake Engineering, 1977-80, 1980-84. Fellow, Indian National Science Academy and Indian National Academy of Engineering.

Dr Arya who is also the chairman of Bureau of Standard for Earthquake Engineering, Government of India, made these revelations at a training session for a large number of structural and civil engineers attached with Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority.

Dr Arya made some revelations in context with building collapses in Ahmedabad. "In whichever building-collapse sites I visited, most of the low-rises in the city have a soft-storey problem. In layman's terms the ground floor (parking space) is bereft of any walls while the upper storeys are heavy and stiff with walls covering the pillars. This imbalance causes the pillars to snap when earthquake strikes," he said.

The professor of University of Roorkee also pointed out that in many buildings the concrete columns were rectangular in shape and were pointing in one direction.

"In one building 27 columns pointed towards one way while only 6 were placed perpendicular to them. Earthquake comes in waves and from different directions so equal number of the beams should be pointing in different directions for safety of any building in a seismic zone," Dr Arya pointed out.

A team of structural and civil engineers who went around the city and to Bhuj to study the nature of damage to different buildings found that "only those which have not complied to the building norms prescribed for seismic zones have crumbled. The others have escaped with minor cracks".

Dr Arya said, "It is of utmost importance that the local civil and structural engineers as the architects, contractors and even the masons should understand how to go about constructing buildings in an area which falls under zone five or even three."

ROSE TOWER

Rose Tower, also known as Rose Rayhaan by Rotana, is a 72-storey, 333 m (1,093 ft) hotel on Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It was the world's tallest hotel. The tower was originally to be 380 m (1,250 ft), but design modification reduced it to 333 m (1,093 ft). Construction began in 2004 and was completed in 2007. On 24 October 2006, the building reached its full height with the addition of the spire. By total height with spire the hotel surpassed the nearby 321 m (1,053 ft) Burj Al Arab. Although the building and its inner furnishings were in place in 2007, it did not open until December 23, 2009.

7

Rose Rayhaan Rotana is one of the first major hotel brands to open in Dubai as alcohol-free. Bonyan International Investment Group is the developer and invested $180 million. The building was officially completed with 482 rooms, suites and penthouses.
