We have a strong tradition of volleyball success on the court and of players in the classroom. The 2011-12 season is the 19th season for head coach Bren Stevens and she recorded her 500th career victory on October 11, 2011 in a 3-1 win over conference opponent Alderson-Broaddus. That win was a mark of success for the coach, for the athletes, and for the volleyball program! Dr. Edwin H. Welch is a native of Maryland and earned degrees from Western Maryland College, Boston University School of Theology, and Boston University Graduate school. His Ph.D. is in social minister in the United Methodist Church. He also studied at the London School of Economics and Political Science and the Harvard Institute for Educational Management. To support his academic studies, Dr. Welch worked in the Executive Office of the President at The White House throughout the tumultuous decade of the 1960s, during the administrations of presidents Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon. Dr. Welch has served as a department chair at West Virginia Wesleyan College, an assistants dean at Lebanon Valley College, an academic vice president at Lakeland College, and a provost at Wartburg College. Since 1989, he has been President of the University of Charleston. During Dr. Welch's tenure, the University of Charleston has completed major fundraising campaigns; added its first doctoral program pharmacy); opened a graduate school of business in downtown Charleston; reinstated football; constructed the seven-story Clay Tower Building (an information, technology, and science facility), the Robert C. Byrd Center for Pharmacy Education, four residence halls, a parking garage and a fitness center; expanded full-time enrollment; eliminated financial deficits; increased the endowment; initiated a colleague service-learning program; and enacted a wide-ranging transformation of the academic program to an outcomes-based focus called Learning Your Way. Widely recognized as a leader in outcomes-based learning, collaboration in private higher education, and developing a culture of assessment, Dr. Welch is a frequent author and speaker on these topics. For six years, he hosted a weekly public affairs interview program on public television, and he authors periodic op-ed pieces for Charleston newspapers. The Foundation for Independent Higher Education chose him to receive the first-ever Charles L. Foreman Award for Innovation in Private Higher Education. Active in community affairs, Dr. Welch serves on several local boards, including the Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) Health Systems Board, the BB&T Advisory Board of West Virginia, and the Mid-Atlantic Technology Research and Innovation Center Board (MATRIC). In 2007, he was chosen to receive the YMCA’s “Spirit of the Valley” award for his hard work, leadership and success in making the Kanawha Valley a better place to live and the following year he was selected by The State Journal for “Who’s Who in West Virginia.” He has also served as president of the Charleston Rotary Club and the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and as chair of the Appalachian College Association. Dr. Welch takes great pride in the ongoing transformation of the University of Charleston into a leader in private higher education.

Eddie King Gym The Eddie King Gym has been the centerpiece of UC athletics since opening in 1948.

The gymnasium holds around 2000 fans, and is home to the UC Hall of Fame. Located

at the heart of the campus, it has a long standing tradition, and has played host to

many UC greats such as Jim Harris, Jayson gee, Sherry Winn, Keith Tyler, and Ajamu

Gaines.

The Eddie King Gym floor has be replaced in 2011 with the floor from the Charleston

Civic Center with the addition of the new floor basketball and volleyball at UC are very

excited to play on it.

Morrison Fitness Center The Morrison Fitness Center opened January 19, 2007. The state-of-the-art facility is located on the banks of the Kanawha River overlooking the State Capitol and Governor’s Mansion. The 7,300 square foot, two story facility is unique in design and offer a picturesque view for students, staff, and faculty when exercising. The fully air-conditioned facility holds 18 pieces of cardio equipment, free weights, and weight machines on the upper and lower levels and features two activity rooms regular classes, and DVDs to work out too. Locker and shower facilities are provided on the first floor. This welcoming and enjoyable environment provides athletes, students, and staff with the opportunity to work out seven days a week during the academic year and five days a week in the summer.

Dr. Bren Stevens

The accomplishments of Bren Stevens since being the head coach of the University of Charleston volleyball program for eighteen seasons, has been nothing short of unprecedented. The list of accomplishments is long and cements the fact that there has been one constant to Stevens’ 18-year tenure at UC; unparalleled successes. Coach Bren Stevens began this season with a career record of 507 wins and 199 losses for a .718 winning percentage. Stevens is currently ranked as the 15th winningest coach that is still actively coaching in NCAA II. Bren’s teams have recorded seventeen seasons in which they have achieved more than twenty wins each year. Since arriving at the University of Charleston in 1993, Stevens has propelled a once lackluster program into the epitome of excellence, as her teams have made seven NCAA appearances since becoming a member of Division II in 1995. It was in 1998 when Stevens’ team advanced to the round of “Sweet Sixteen” at the Atlantic Regional. The team lost to an opponent that they had beaten earlier in the season and ended up just one win away from advancing to the Elite 8. Coach Stevens is a pioneer with tremendous vision, passion and enthusiasm for the sport of volleyball. Coach Bren was named WVIAC “Coach of the Year” in 1995, 1997 and 2001. She was inducted into the University of Charleston’s Hall of Fame in 2006. As a player she earned both WVIAA and Mid-West Regional First-team honors. Her penchant for prosperity on the court has also transcended into the regional community. Bren served for nine years as the Chairperson of the WVIAC Volleyball Coaches. Coach Stevens currently serves on the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s Head Coaches Committee. She is also a member of the Hall of Fame Selection committee for the AVCA. Bren’s reputation which she built for her program in West Virginia extends far beyond the borders of her state. Stevens serves as a leader/teacher to other coaches through a mentoring program established by the AVCA. Bren has also spent five years serving on NCAA RAC Committees both in the Atlantic and Great Lake Regions.

While the accomplishments of many teams end on the court, that simply is

where the University of Charleston’s begins. For the past three seasons Bren’s teams

have been named as Academic All-America teams, by reaching a team GPA of 3.3 or

higher. Bren and her teams are very active in community service projects including

those which involve the Make-a-Wish foundation and the Susan G. Komen fund.

Bren herself holds a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Health with a

teaching certification in grades K-12 from the University of Charleston. She obtained a

Master’s of Science degree in Physical Education with a specialization in Exercise

Physiology from Marshall University. Coach Stevens also holds a PhD from Lacrosse

University in Education Administration.

Bren serves an assistant professor within the Division of Business and

currently teaches Sport Administration classes for her institution. Coach Stevens also

serves in the role of Interim Athletic Director of Athletics and Senior Woman’s

Administrator for the University of Charleston. Bren is very active with the NCAA and

serves on the NCAA DII Management Council. She is a member of the Competitive

Safeguards and Medical Aspects in Sports Committee as well as their Branding and

Identity Committee for DII. Bren is a respected coach, faculty member and administrator

on her campus.

Coach Amanda Ansell was a dominant player of her own before she graduated from the University of Charleston in 2002, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. She then went on to teach 3rd grade at Piedmont for the next 10 years while assistant coaching part time at UC. However, she has recently left her teaching job to join the UC staff full time this year

Coach Michael Sankoff begins his fifteenth year as an assistant volleyball coach with the University of Charleston. Michael brings a wealth of knowledge to the Golden Eagles with a strong background as a former USAV player. Coach Sankoff earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from WVU Institute of Technology, and he currently works for Potesta and Associates as a Civil Engineer. Coach Michael is a volunteer assistant that is involved in all facets of the University of Charleston’s volleyball program.

Founded in 1924, the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) rates as one of the oldest leagues at the small-college level. The league's 15 member schools include: Alderson- Broaddus College, Bluefield State College, University of Charleston, Concord University, Davis & Elkins College, Fairmont State University, Glenville State College, Ohio Valley University, Shepherd University, West Liberty University, West Virginia State University, West Virginia Wesleyan College and Wheeling Jesuit University. The University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and Seton Hill University joined the WVIAC for the 2006-07 season. Pitt Johnstown and Seton Hill are the WVIAC’s first out-of-state members since 1932. The WVIAC moved into the NCAA Division II ranks in 1994 after a long affiliation with the NAIA. The conference was the only one in Division II to place a team in the national quarterfinals in men’s basketball, football and baseball during the 1998-99 academic year. In 2002 the WVIAC, along with two other conferences, became the first league to earn four bids to the NCAA Division II Men’s Basketball Championship. Commissioner Barry Blizzard, who has held the post since 1987, led the move into the NCAA. Blizzard, a native of Bramwell, West Virginia, previously served as the athletics director at Bluefield State. The long-time conference chief has served in a variety of national leadership positions, including a stint as president of the Division II Conference Commissioners’ Association. He is currently the chairman of the NCAA Division II Nominating Committee. Alumni of conference members include West Virginia State’s Earl Lloyd (the first African-American to play in the National Basketball Association), Pitt Johnstown's John Murtha (former US representative), and Wheeling Jesuit’s John Beilein (current Michigan men’s basketball coach). The conference’s basketball tournament is one of the longest-running events in collegiate hoops; the 74th annual event was held earlier this year at the Charleston Civic Center. Attendance at the WVIAC tournament ranks among the highest in Division II. The conference also boasts a 10-station radio network for the tournament. Women’s sports were incorporated into the WVIAC during the 1981-82 academic year as the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Association was absorbed. Currently, women’s championships are offered in softball, golf, tennis, track, basketball, volleyball, cross country and soccer. Men’s championships are conducted in football, cross country, soccer, basketball, baseball, golf, tennis and track. The league was recognized by the State Journal as one of “55 Great Things About West Virginia” in the magazine’s April 2007 edition. The WVIAC is headquartered in Princeton, WV.

Once in the NCAA, Commissioner Blizzard has become involved with its administrative matters and presently serves as the chairman of the Division II Awards Commissioners' Association. He also has served as the regional chair of the selection committee for the Disney Wide World of Sports Basketball Tip-off Tournament. In addition, Blizzard has helped structure a model conference format for Division II league offices. He is a past chair of the NCAA Division II Nominating Committee and currently serves on the Division II Membership Committee. Barry's work in the field of intercollegiate athletics has not gone unnoticed by peers. He has received a number of awards including the NAIA's National Award of Merit for work as president of the Athletic Directors Association and the seventh annual Mike McLaughlin Memorial Administrative Award which is the WVIAC award recognizing persons who have made outstanding contributions to the conference for a period of years. Additionally, a report he authored, NAIA Eligibility Rules, Time for a change, was published in the spring 1986 edition of The Athletic Administrator, a publication of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. Blizzard's background in intercollegiate sports and sports management has served him well to deal with the tasks of overseeing this league. Before taking on his present position, he was the athletic director and sports information director at Bluefield State College, for 11 years beginning in 1976. A two-year period as assistant athletic director and SID, preceded this. The Commissioner is a native of Bramwell, WV, and received his undergraduate degree at Bluefield State College. He earned a Masters in American History at Radford (VA) University. Barry lives in Princeton with his wife Jill. He and his late wife, Vicki, have two married daughters. Aimee Bolton and husband Jeff and Emilie Whittaker and husband Garret who reside in Princeton. Jill has one married daughter Ande Hubbard and husband Dan reside in Baltimore, MD.

Commissioner Barry Blizzard has been at the helm of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference since his appointment in November, 1987. Through his very able leadership as the conference's fourth commissioner, the WVIAC continues to enjoy national respectability and competiveness among the 15 member schools and 16 sponsored sports. One of the major accomplishments during Blizzard's tenure as WVIAC Commissioner has been managing the conference's transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division II, which occurred in the fall of 1995. He also oversaw the move of the conference headquarters to Princeton in 1987. Prior to NCAA affiliation, Barry held, at various times, a number of NAIA-related national and regional offices. One in particular was a term as president of the NAIA National Athletic Directors Association.

Brownlee also was a four-year letter winner for Bethany's swim team. The

John Marshall H.S. graduate served two years as the secretary of the

Bethany and PAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committees.

During college, Brownlee interned with the public relations and

marketing department of the Ohio Valley Medical Center and with the

Ohio Valley chapter of the American Red Cross. In addition, he gained

over-the-air experience as the program director for Bethany's campus

radio station (WVBC-FM) and as a part-time employee for Clear Channel

Radio in Wheeling and KeyMarket Communication in Bellaire, OH.

Brownlee is a member of the NCAA Division II Swimming & Diving

Committee along with the NCAA Green Team. He also serves as the varsity

swim coach at PikeView H.S.

Ben Brownlee joined the WVIAC in July, 2007 as the league's first NCAA compliance coordinator. The 2006 Bethany College graduate previously served a one-year stint as an intern for the Presidents' Athletic Conference. The Moundsville, W.V. native works with the 15-member league's institutions in NCAA compliance related duties and helps manage internal operations for the WVIAC.

“Megan is replacing Stephanie Prewitt, who did an outstanding job for

our league since 2007. We wish nothing but the best for Stephanie, who

recently accepted a job with the Great American Conference.” Ciborowski was the Sports Information Director and Compliance

Coordinator at Bluefield State from 2010-2011. During that time, she

supervised and ran all the BSC volleyball and basketball events. In addition,

she monitored student-athlete eligibility and institutional compliance with

NCAA rules and regulations.

In the spring of 2011, Ciborowski was an assistant softball coach for

the Lady Blues. In addition to her on-field duties, she supervised strength

and conditioning workouts for the squad, handled travel and game

management while handling travel logs and other reports for the athletic

department. Ciborowski is a native of Matewan, WV., and was a multi-sport

student-athlete at Bluefield State. She ran cross country, played basketball

and volleyball throughout her time as a Lady Blue. Ciborowski is a 2005

graduate of Matewan H.S., where she earned all-state honors in volleyball,

basketball and softball. Ciborowski earned her bachelor of science degree in criminal justice

from Bluefield State in 2009. She and her husband, Glen, reside in

Princeton..

The Commissioner's Cup is awarded to the institution with the highest cumulative score as determined by a scoring method used by the league. Points are awarded based on the school's finish after completion of each of the sports sponsored by the WVIAC.

WVIAC champions are determined by the regular season standings in sports that receive NCAA automatic qualification for the tournament winners. Tournament champions in all other sports are considered conference champions. The tournament winner is considered the WVIAC champion in sports with a divisional setup

It took all the nerves she could muster, but head volleyball coach Bren Stevens' team pulled

through in four sets to notch her 500th career victory against Alderson-Broaddus. UC (10-13, 4-2) jumped on

the Battlers (8-15, 3-3) right off the first serve using the momentum of the big night as their catalyst to for

AB into seven errors into the first set. The Golden Eagles set the tone early with their best set of the night

as they hit .250 with just three errors as they were not threatened in a 25-19 win for a 1-0 lead. Alderson-

Broaddus was determined to rain on Coach Stevens' parade as they regrouped in set two to out hit

Charleston 28 percent to 25 percent, cleaning up their own mistakes that doomed the nights opening set.

AB ran out to a 9-3 advantage before a timeout from Stevens allowed the home team to evaluate what was

on the line. UC whittled away at the lead in front of a rowdy crowd of well over 250 before Malleri Hardison

(Uniontown, PA) provided a highlight reel slam to tie the game at 21-21.

The two teams traded points to setup the inevitable need for extra points to decide the pivotal

game in the match. After an Alderson-Broaddus timeout with the score set at 24-24, the night's leading

scorer Lora Goss (Birmingham, AL) struck to hand possession to UC headed into the final point. Goss was

next in line to serve and wasted no time in putting the game away by placing a hard-hit ball to the back line

that the Battlers couldn't corral, recording the ace for the final point (26-24). Goss led all Charleston hitters

on the evening with 12 kills, four aces and three digs. Behind an outstanding offensive effort that saw the

Battlers book a .412 hitting percentage the visitors made an attempt to creep back into the match with a

25-21 win in set three. UC had its worst offensive effort (.182) in the same game to delay Stevens'

celebration for another set.

Alderson-Broaddus played with passion in the fourth set to show they were not to be taken

lightly and are still a contender within the West Virginia Conference with the Golden Eagles finding

themselves down 10-5 quickly. Just as in the second set Charleston continued to pressure the net forcing

hitting errors, while calmly chipping away at the deficit in front of them. In a mirror image of set two the

teams found a tied scoreboard at 19-19 when freshman Julia Moskal (Ontario, Canada) took a great pass

from Kelsey Eby (Portland, OR)and drove home the tying point.

In another scary coincidence as in set two the teams were knotted at 24-24 when Goss again

delivered the go-ahead point and possession for the final attempt at handing the long-time UC coach win

No. 500. This time Hardison provided the highlight with a slam down the middle of the court off a Katie

Williams (Gettysburg, PA ) set that sent a deafening roar thru Eddie King Gym. With the Hardison kill Coach

Stevens stormed the court to join her team in celebration of a milestone victory.

"These girls played their hearts out tonight and I'm really proud of them for fighting for this

win all night" stated Coach Stevens. "The ladies pulled it together tonight to help me get this 500th win,

I'm pumped up and couldn't be happier."

The University of Charleston's offense on the night was balanced with four players trailing just

behind Goss offensively. Brenna Youlton (Ontario, Canada ) continued her mid-season tear finishing tied

with Moskal at nine kills with each player hitting .350 on the evening. Cara Hibbs-Leyva (San Diego, CA ) and

Hardison followed just behind at eight kills each. Williams and Eby continued to be a dangerous duo on the

floor with 26 and 16 assists.

The University of Charleston community mourns the loss of long-time Athletic Director

Tom Nozica. Coach Nozica passed away on October 6,2011 after a short battle with cancer. He had been UC's baseball coach since 1969, and its athletic director for the past 13 years.

"Noz" recently announced his retirement as Athletic Director, but had intended to continue as

baseball coach for the 2012 season. He will be sorely missed by generations of UC fans and

student athletes. Tom Nozica has coached at UC since 1969 and may be the longest serving coach in all of

Division II athletics," stated university president Dr. Edwin Welch. "He is part of the fabric of the

University of Charleston. He shaped and guided the athletics program of the University and,

more important, he helped shape the lives of countless athletes. He epitomized our

commitment to preparing students to be successful graduates, contributing citizens,

and individuals of high character and personal value. He will be greatly missed."
