School DaysPatchtown In the spiritof celebratingPanora-masthirtiethyear,IdecidedtolookthroughnineteenyearsofmyformerstoriespublishedinPanorama.Ialsowantedtocontinueourwalkthroughthehistoryofourareaschools.IhopeyouenjoytheexcerptsIhavechosenfrommyseriesonourlocalpatchtowns.So,Happy30thBirthday,Panorama. Mayyouhavemanymorewonderfulyears. Hazle Township had a wonderfulsystem of elementary through eighth gradeschoolsinplaceinallthepatchtownswhichwere the feeder schools forHazleTownshipHigh School located at Fifteenth and N.ChurchStreets,Somanyofyoureadershaveshared your stories withme over the years.ForthisIthankyou. Therewasawoodenschoolhousein

Hollywood, Pennsylvania, thatis.Mostoftheolderchildrenhadthechoreofgettingupearlytopickcoalforthefam-ilyhomeuse,alwayskeepingasharpeyeoutfor Spaidy, the Coal and Iron policeman,who patroled the patchtowns for the coalcompany. Spaidy started at seven oclock inthemorning;sotheyhadtohurryhomeandcleanupforschool.Theschooldaystartedat9A.M.untilnoonandresumedat1P.M.un-til4P.M.withatwentyminuterecessinthemorning and the afternoon.The bell wouldringandthestudentswouldfileintotheclass-rooms.SchoolstartedwiththePledgeofAl-legianceandaBiblereading.Therewasabigpotbelliedstoveforheat.Thewoodenschool,firstthrougheighthgrades,consistedofthreebuildings;twoofthebuildingswerejoinedby

acoveredhallway.Onebuildingwasseparate.TheWPAclearedaplaygroundaroundthemfor thechildren;andtherewasanouthouseoutback.Notonly theHollywoodchildrenwereenrolledthere.ThechildrenfromMil-nesville#7alsoattended.Milnesville#7wasaverysmallvillageimmedialtelynexttoHol-lywood on the side closest to Route #309.Thechildren lovedgoingtosummerschooltoo.SummerschoolwasrunbytheBlodgettCommunityHouse. Carl Rebarchak, a Hollywood na-tive, related this story tomeabouthisdog,Fido, and summer school. Miss Little wasthekindergartenteacherwhopickedupthechildreninherstationwagon.Nowthiswasintheearly1930s.ShewouldpickupCarl;andFidowouldcomealongwithhim.Fidohadhisownseatinschool.OnedayCarlwassick.Itmusthavebeensomethingcontagioussince his home had a tag on it.Carl didntrememberwhichillnesshehad. MissLittledidntknowhewassickandstoppedforCarland Fido, as usual. She blew her horn andFidocameout,hoppedinandwenttoschoolwithout him.That day Fido got a grahamcrackerforbeingagooddog. The Milnesville school consistedof two buildings. The larger of the twoheld grades one to seven. Eighth gradewastaught ina separatebuildingoff to the sideofthemainbuilding.Inthebacktherewasaplaygroundandanouthouse for theschool.Teaching first through seventh grades were:MameBurke,Mary Barnes, FernGettingerandMissAnderson.EighthgradewastaughtbyMr.Sharkey.MyfriendCeciliaKasperanLadick, aMilnesville native,went to eighthgrade while her future husband, Stephen,wentontohisfirstyearofhighschool.Ste-phenhadhadajobpickingslate,buthadtogiveitupwhenthelawwaspassedthatitwasmandatory to stay in school until youweresixteenyearsofage.Hegaveupthejobandwent to Hazle Township High School un-tilhewas sixteen,whenhe left to return towork. In those times, itwasvery importantformanyyoungboys, likeStephen, to earnmoneyforthefamily. Didyouknowthatby1869Stock-tonhad1,200residentswhowereservedbyapostoffice located insidethegrocerystore?Theyalsohadaschoolhousewithapotbelliedstove for warmth. The children picked theabundantcoalforfueltokeeptheschoolhousewarm in thewinter.The older boys helpedthe teacher take out the ashes. My friend,Susanna Grega, remembered the school-housewith thepotbellied stove,playgroundand outhouse that she attended during herchildhooddaysgrowingupinStockton.Theschoolhousehadtwobigclasses.Gradesfirst

through fourth were taught by Miss MarySommers.Grades fifth through eighthweretaughtbyMr.TomErieywhowasfromthenorthside,maybeLattimer.AMr.Fullswasanother teacherat somepoint in time,whohadtheonlycameraintown.Heisremem-beredforclimbingtothetopofEasterRocks,outsideoftown,totakeapictureofStockton.All the town records and photographswerekept in the Stockton schoolhouse andwereburned when the school was demolished.Howsad. Swinging around Hazleton, wecometoBeaverBrook,asmallvillagecutofffrom Route #309 near Audenreid, by stripmining. BeaverBrook, too, had its schoolwithapotbelliedstove,playgroundandout-house.The school was located onTamaquaRoadinthecenteroftown.Itstoodintothe1980s when it was destoyed by fire. JohnMattie,anativeofBeaverBrookandretiredteacherfromPennStateUniversity,filledmeinonsomeofhisremembrancesofthatoldschool. Some of the childrenwho attendedlivedinnearbyHazleVillage.AlvinSchugart,the principal, taught seventh and eighthgrades.Mr.McDonald,whohad awoodenleg, taughtfifthand sixthgrades.Mrs.AnnStinnett and Mrs. Vivian Pitt Hill taughtthird and fourth grades and a Miss. Ger-trudeBrennantaughtfirstandsecondgrades.Ninthgradestudentsweresenttoschool inCranberry before going on toHazleTown-shipHighSchool.TherewasnobusservicetoBeaverBrook,soJohnhikedtohighschool,graduatingin1946.Hismotherwouldkeephissupperwarmonthedayshestayedafterschool for sports practice. In 1945, LeonDotter, founder of Motor TransportationCompany,contracted toprovidebus serviceto pick up the school children. He thendrove intoBeaverBrook topickup theschool children. JosephConahan, asonofBeaverBrook,laterbecameabelovedMayorofHazleton,PA. Swamptown childrenwenttotheJapanJeddoSchoolfromfirsttoeighthgrades.In1947,SwamptownhadtwentyhomeswhentheJeddoHighlandCoalCompanydecided it had tomove.Twelvehomessucess- fully made

thetriptonewfoundationsinSouthMiddle-town.TheJapanJeddoSchoolwasbetweenJapanJeddoandMiddletown.TommyWizdalivednexttotheschoolhouseinMiddletownaccordingtomyfriend,thelateEmilKush-ner,whowroteabouttheTravelingMedicineShow which came to Japan every summer.Nowadays,youmaywonderwhereJapanJed-dowas.WhenWorldWarIIstartedandPearlHarborwasattackedbyJapan,thetownsfolknolongerwantedtohavetheirtownknowasJapan.TodayitisjustJeddoandJeddoBor-oughisusingtheboroughwhichtheyalwayswere,butdidnotuse in talkingabout theirtown.FromJapanJeddoSchoolthechildrenwenttotheOakdaleSchoolforninthgrade;thenontotheHazleTownshipHighSchoolonNorthChurchStreet. Foundryville, another patchtownthathasdisappeared,hadaoneroomschool,accordingtoMargaretBalyoBarna,whoat-tendedschoolthere.Ittohadapot-belliedstoveforheat.Allsixgradesweretaughtinthatone room.Marge felt that thechildrenlearned from each other in that one roomschool. Thosewerethegoodolddays.Sev-enth and eighth grades went to Eckley forschool. One of the teachers whom MargerememberedwasGeorgeEvancho,whowasfrom Eckley. Teachers were Miss. EvelynBaskinwhocamefromDriftonandMr.StevePetrilla who came from Hazle Brook. Mr.Petrilla came to teach school on the train.Schooldaysranfrom9A.M.to4P.M.withone hour to run home for lunch. I thinkthesechildrenwenttoFosterTownshipHighSchoolinFreelandforhighschool. Highlandwas a little townnestledbetween Freeland and Eckley according toHelenPavukSantore.TheHighlandSchoolhadgrades fromfirst througheighth.Helenremembereditwell.Therewerefiveroomsinall,eachwithitspotbelliedstove.Therewerenosnowdaysinthosedays,sothechildrenswalkseemedlikefivemilesinthecoldweath-er.Inbadweathertheycarriedtheirlunch;ingoodweathertheyranhomeforlunch.

Helen liked school and excelled atherstudies.Beforeandafterschoolthechil-drenpickedcoalforthefamilysshedtokeepthemwarminthewinter.Whenshefinishedeighthgrade,Helenwasunabletocontinueto high school in Freeland because of herfathers tragicdeath in aminingaccident atJeddo#5.Helengotherworkingpapersandfoundajobpaying$3.00aweek. The school in JeddoBorough hadthreeroomsandflewanAmericanflagontop.By the1930s thiswooden schoolhad elec-tricityandindoorplumbing.ItwasheatedbysteamfromthesteamshopbehindtheJeddocompany store. Grades first through eighthweretaughtthere.KatherineGriffithstaughtfirst,secondandthirdgrades.BessieWilliamsfromHazletontaughtfourth,fifthandsixthgrades.BessiemarriedthebutcherfromtheJeddostore.Hisnameescapesme justnow.TheprincipalwasRoyAustin;and,hetaughtseventhandeighthgradesinhisroom.JeanneYostMauerememberedthatherclasshadtenstudentsandthattheschoolwasfull.JeannessisterOrvatookJeannetoschoolonherfirstday. Ruth Schuchart Pecile remembers thathercousinJeanneYosttookhertoschoolon

herbicycle.Ruththoughttheschoolseemedso far away, but it really wasnt. Ruth tookher sister, Lois Schuchart Leutholdwhen itcametimeforhertogotofirstgrade.Every-onewalkedhomeforlunch.Theschoolwasdownnear ScrubOak, probably named forall theOaktrees inthatsection.ScrubOakwas theneighborhood locateddownbehindtheJeddoCoalCompanyOfficesandStore. The Jeddo Highland Coal Com-pany had begun strip mining to get therich black anthracite coal under the ScrubOaksectionofJeddobehindtheoffice.Theschoolwasmoved to the casino.Yes, Jeddohad a casino, but I never heard of anyonegambling there. I would love to know thehistoryofthatname,casino.TheMethodistChurchalsoheldservicesandSundaySchoolthere on Sunday, and theGirl ScoutTroopstarted byMrs.WilliamT. (Edna)HowellsandMrs.LauraSchuchartmetinthecasino.Strange name.Teachers in the casino were:Miss.ElizabethTormay,Miss.VernaSchaub,Mrs.FerryandMr.Sharkey.Aftertheeighthgradeboththeboysandgirlshadthechoicetoattendhighschool inHazleton,FreelandorFosterTownship.Theboys only had thechoiceofattendingMMI inFreeland, sinceitwasnotco-edatthatpointintime.JeanneYostgraduatedfromHazletonHighSchool,

Classof1941.RuthSchuchartchoosetoat-tend Hazleton High School, but when theJeddo school closed, she had to transfer toWest Hazleton High School where her sis-ter,Lois,attended;andtheybothgraduatedfromthere.Apublicbus,notayellowschoolbus,wouldcomedownintoJeddoBoroughforthestudents.Itwouldtakethemdirectlyto theWestHazletonHighSchool.DuringWWIIthechildrenlovedtogatherthenews-papersandtincanstohelpinthewareffort. Iknowthatthereweremoreschoolsinotherpatchtowns,but I feel Ihavegivenyouasampleofwhatlifewaslikeinapatch-townschoolday.Ifyouhaveamemorythatyouwouldliketosharewithmeaboutyourschooldays,orknowofsomeoneIshouldin-terview,pleasewritetomecareofPanoramaMagazine.P

Earlyin my career, I worked for avery, very prestigious privatecollectoroffineart.Heownedvery importantandveryvalu-ableworks of art bymany ofart historys masters. His artwas regularly borrowed bymajor--I mean major--muse-umsforexhibitionsandstudy.I am talking about art by thebignameslikePicasso,Monet,Rembrandt, etc. One day, abig time museum called andaskedtoborrowoneofhisstel-lar paintings. Of course, they

wanted the one valued at over $1 millionbucks.IaskedwhereIcouldfindthepaint-ing,soIcouldreviewitsconditionandfacili-tatetheloanrequest.Inearlyfelloverwhenhetoldme,Itshanginginthelaundryroomoverthewashingmachine.Sufficeittosay,thatwasntthebestspotforapainting. When you are displaying your art,whetheritsworth$1millionor$10dollars,

there are certainpartsof thehouse that youshouldavoid.

The Off Limit Rooms First,dontdisplayartorantiquesinthe laundryroom(duh!).Dontdisplaypre-ciousobjectsinthekitchennearthecookingsurfaceswheredirtandheataretypicalguestsat the dinner table. Eckley Miners Village will play host to a wide range of events in 2011, from its famous Patch Town Days through Living History Weekend and a brand-new Armed Forces Tribute weekend this year. Starting off the year is Charter Day, Sunday, March 13, from noon to 5 p.m. Admission to the event, which celebrates the founding of Pennsylvania, is free to the museum and to the cultural activities that will be offered. The Gift Shop will also be open. The Villages Spring Sunday Lecture, to which admission is free, will be held Sunday, April 17, at 2 p.m. Speaker and subject will be announced in the near fu-ture. Patch Town Days, the Villages yearly anthracite heritage festival and one of its most popular events, will be held Satur-day, June 18, and Sunday, June 19, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Attendees will be able to celebrate the customs and traditions of the anthracite coal region through music, dancing, food, living history presenta-tions, artisans, crafters and a wide range of period activities. Admission is $6 for adults, $5.50 for seniors (65+) and $4 for children 6 to 12. Armed Forces Tribute Weekend will be held Saturday and Sunday, July 16 and 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All are asked to join us in supporting and honor-ing all those who fought for our country, from the Civil War right through the Iraq/Afghanistan conflicts. A full slate of ac-tivities is planned for this special tribute weekend. Living History Weekend: Civil War History, is set for Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 20 and 21, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Civil War re-enactors make the era come alive. Events include living history dem-onstrations, military encampments and other period offerings. Admission is $6 for adults, $5.50 for seniors (65+) and $4 for children 6 to 12. Halloween Lantern Tours will be offered Oct. 14 and 15 (rain date Oct. 16), Oct. 21 and 22 (rain date Oct. 23) and Oct. 28 and 29 (rain date Oct. 30). Tours are offered from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Participants are invited to bring their own flashlights or purchase a lantern at the museum for a chilling evening of mys-tery and the macabre walking along the ghostly streets in Eckley. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children 6-12. The Fall Sunday Lecture is set for Sunday, Nov. 13, at 2 p.m. The speaker for the free lecture will be announced later.

Eckley Miners Village is a living his-tory museum focusing on the daily life of the anthracite coal miner and his fam-ily. Settled in 1854, the village is one of hundreds of company mining towns or patches built in the anthracite region during the 19th century. The site pre-serves a way of life which dominated the anthracite coal region for more than 150 years. Hours of operation are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The Village is open year-round. It is closed for all holidays except Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day. Admission rates to the Village and the Museum are $6 for adults, $5.50 for se-niors (65+) and $4 for children under 13. Walking tours available from Memorial Day to Labor Day and on weekends in September and October -- are $1.50 per person (50 cents for children 6-12). Walk-ing tours are contingent on staff availabil-ity and weather conditions. Eckley is located just off Route 940 in Luzerne County, 10 miles east of down-town Hazleton. County HistorySchuylkill SchuylkillCountywasformedfromparts of Berks and Northampton Countiesall tomake the judicial processmore effec-tive and easier. InMarch of 1811,Gover-norSnyderapprovedanactdesignatingpartsof Berks andNorthampton counties into anewcountycalledSchuylkillnamedaftertheSchuylkillRiver.Theoriginal countybeforetheadditionofBerksandNorthamptonhad9 townships and today has 37. SchuylkillCountys first county seatwas originally lo-catedinOrwigsburg,butitwaslatermovedtoPottsvillein1847.In1831,agitationaroseformovingthecountseattoPottsville.AfterthecompletionoftherailroadconnectiontoPhiladelphia, Pottsville became the defaultcenter of commerce. Changing the countyseatwasputonthecountyballotandthevote

was3,551infavorofPottsvilleand3,091infavor ofOrwigsburg. This led to an act oflegislature that nominated Pottsville as theSchuylkill County seat of justice onMarch13,1847. Prior tothe first court-housebeingbuiltin 1815, courtwas held in theArcardian Hotelin Orwigsburg.The first truecourthouse ofthe county wasbuilt in Orwigs-burg; it was asimplistic two-

storydesignmadefrombrick.Thelayoutofthebuildingwasmodestwiththecourtroomonthefirstfloorandpublicofficesandjuryroomonthesecond.InOctoberof1849,thesecond county courthouse commenced itsconstructionasthefirstcourthouseinPotts-ville.Thenewcourthouseheldacourtroom,a consultation room, four jury rooms, anda library. What made this new courthouseuniquewerethetownclockandthebellthatweighednearlyaton.In1851,thePottsvillecourthousewascompleteandalltherecordsweremoved fromOrwigsburg to Pottsville.It didnt take long for SchuylkillCounty tosoongrowoutoftheirsecondcourthouseduetotherapidgrowthfromtheindustrializationand the development of mineral resources.Thecornerstoneforthenewcourthousewaslaid onOctober 3, 1889, for the third andcurrent courthouse.This building depicts aRomanesquestyleofarchitecture,construct-ed completely of Cleveland Limestone. Ithasfivestoriesandhasanaturalredoakfin-ishedinterior.Atthetimeitwaserected,thiscourthousewasconsideredsecondtononeintheCommonwealthwiththefewexceptionsof courthouses in Pittsburgh and Philadel-phia. Inthepast,SchuylkillCountycon-tributed immensely to the railroad and an-thracitemining industries.Today,SchuylkillCountyisknownasthestateleaderinpotatoand Christmas tree production with a fifthof thecountys landdesignatedas farmland.Over150,000residentscallthiscountytheirhomeandembracetheirareasgreatheritageandshareitsrichhistorywiththeirpride.

TheCourthouseCommonsisaparkspacethatwillbebuiltinfrontofthecountycourthouseandwillbededicatedinMay2011.Acommemorativeceremonyto celebrate theCourthouseCommonswillbeopentothepublicanditsdatewillbean-nounced. On July 9, 2011 at Sweet ArrowLakeParkinPineGrove,afireworksdisplayandold-fashionedpicnicwillbeheld.IftheweatherisinclementaraindateisscheduledforJuly10,2011. On October 9, 2011 a cocktail/open house will be held at the courthouse.Therewillbea$25coveratthedoorandhorsdoeurvesandrefreshmentswillbeserved.Atimecapsule,whichwillholdalotofhistori-

calsignificantinformation,isalsogoingtobededicatedatthisevent. DAngelo Jr. ln January of 2011, the U.S. De-partmentofHealthandHumanServicesandtheU.S. Environmental Protection Agency,issued new recommendations regarding theamountoffluorideplacedinmunicipalwatersupplies.Themainreasonforthischangeisanincreaseinthe incidence of mild fluo-rosis appearing on the permanent teeth ofchildren.Mildfluorosisappearsasbarelyno-ticeablewhitespotsorstreaksonpermanentteeth. lnmore advanced cases,fluorosis cancausebrownmarkingsontheteethaswellaspitting of the enamel.This condition onlyaffects childrenover the ageof6because itoccurswhenthepermanentteetharedevel-opinginthejawbones. lnmostcasesmildfluorosisdoesnotrequireanytreatment.lnthosecaseswhereaparentorchildmaywanttoimprovetheap-pearanceofteethaffectedbyfluorosis,thereare several conservative procedures that areeffective.lfthediscolorationissuperficial,themarkingscanberemovedbybleaching,orbyacombinationofbleachingandmicroabra-sion.Microabrasionisaprocedurethatusesamildacidicsolutiontodissolvethesuperfi-ciallayersofthetooththatcontainthediscol-oration.Themildacidisslowlypolishedintothetoothuntilthestainsareremovedwith-outharmingtheunderlyinghealthyenamel.lf thewhite spotsandstreaksextenddeeperin the enamel, they canbe removedwith afine grit diamond and then bonded with atooth -colored filling material. Radiesse is a dermal filler derived

from calcium, thesame substance thatcomposes our bonesandteeth.ItwasapprovedbytheFDAtocor-rectwrinklesandfoldsin2006havingbeenusedpreviouslytocorrectdefectswithinthebladderandlarynx.Unlikecollagen,Radiessedoesnotrequirerefrigerationandisstoredatroomtemperature.Anumbingagentisadd-ed toRadiesse prior to use and this greatlyminimizes discomfort. Radiesse is injecteddeeper in the skin than collagen, and is farsuperior in terms of longevity, lasting some12to16months.Radiesseshouldnotbeusedtoplump-uplipsastinynodulesmayform;ideal locations are the nasolabial folds andmarionettelines. Juvederm, another long lastingdermalfiller,wasalsoapprovedbytheFDAin2006.Thisproduct iscomposedofhyal-uronicacid,asubstancefoundinabundanceintheskin.Juvedermisstoredatroomtem-peratureandthenewestversionscontainananestheticpremixedwiththeproduct.Differ-entconcentrationsareavailable;alessviscousvariety canbeused toplump-up lips,whilethe thickest version, Juvederm Ultra Plus,isideallysuitedfornasolabialfoldsandchincreases. Corneal transplantation is theonlyeffectiverestorationforthereplace-mentofhumantissueintheeye. Eye donation is the oldestformof tissue andorgandonation. Itbeganback in1905with theveryfirstcorneal transplant. Currently over46,000 corneas are transplanted yearlyintheUnitedStatesalone.Thissurgeryisover90%successfulatrestoringsighttotherecipient. The cornea is the clear outerportionoftheeyethatcoversthepupilandtheiris.Itallowslighttobetrans-mittedthroughtheeyetotheretina.Ifthecorneaiscloudyordamaged,itcangreat-lyinterferewithapersonsabilitytoseere-gardless ofwhether ornot they arewearingglassesorcontactlenses.

The cornea can de damaged in anumberofways. Severescarringmayresultfrom injury, inappropriate contact lens use,orseveredryeyesyndrome.Diseasessuchasherpes simplex and herpes zoster (shingles)

can cause scarring if not treated early andproperly. A chronic swelling of the corneafrom Fuchs corneal dystrophy or bullouskeratopathycanleadtoacloudycorneaand
