PENNY DEANHEAD COACH • 22ND SEASON AT BGSU

239-207 AT BGSU • 285-251 OVERALL

HEAD COACH PENNY DEAN

The Bowling Green State University tennis program is in the more-than-capable hands of Penny Dean. The 2011-12 academic year marks Dean’s 22nd season as head coach of the Falcons and her 26th year as a collegiate head coach. Entering the dual-match portion of the ’11-12 campaign, Dean has a record of 239-207 at BGSU, and a career head-coaching mark of 285-251.

In 2010-11, Dean led the Falcons to an overall record of 15-8, just one win shy of tying the school’s single-season record. The Falcons, picked to finish seventh in the Mid-American Conference standings in the preseason coaches poll, went 5-3 in league regular-season play to finish fourth in the nine-team league. BG downed Toledo, 4-0, in the quarterfinal round of the MAC Championships to advance to the semifinals for the first time in three years.

In the classroom, the 2010-11 Falcons picked up a number of awards at the BGSU athletic department’s annual Honors Night in April of 2011. The tennis Falcons had the highest grade-point average of any of BGSU’s women’s teams, with a stellar GPA of 3.75. The team also had the largest improvement from the prior year (increasing from 2.98).

Through the Fall 2011 semester, all seven of Dean’s student-athletes have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.34, with six of the seven sporting GPAs of 3.49 or higher.

Also at that 2011 banquet, senior Christine Chiricosta won the Falcon Medal of Honor, the highest award given by the BGSU Athletics Department. The award encompasses everything that a BGSU student-athlete should be.

Christine Chiricosta, after becoming the first player in program history to be named to the Academic All-America Team as a sophomore, earned that honor in each of the next two years as well. She was selected to the third team as a soph, made the second team as a junior, and became (obviously) the first student-athlete to earn first-team honors as a senior, being selected to the 2011 Capital One Academic All-America Women’s At-Large Team.

In May of 2011, the Falcons were recognized with an NCAA Public Recognition Award for the sixth consecutive year. The award is given each year to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in their sport with their Academic Progress Rate. The Falcons were also named an ITA All-Academic Team yet again.

Dean’s Falcons have had a perfect score of 1,000 in every year of the APR’s existence.

Dean guided the 2009-10 team to a 12-10 overall mark on the court, and a veritable plethora of academic honors in the classroom. As mentioned, Christine Chiricosta earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors, being named to the second team.

The Falcons were named an ITA All-Academic Team in ‘09-10, and three student-athletes were named ITA Scholar Athletes.

In the 2008-09 campaign, the Brown and Orange finished with an overall record of 12-7, and a Mid-American Conference mark of 5-3. The latter record was the program’s first winning ledger in MAC play since the 2002-03 season. BGSU finished fourth in the

regular-season standings.

Dean and the Falcons posted a 16-5 overall record in the 2007-08 season, in the process tying the school single-season record for wins. Dean’s 1998-99 team originally set that mark.

That ’07-08 team ended the season with the school’s highest winning percentage in three decades. The program’s .762 win rate in `07-08 was the highest since the 1977-78 team finished 8-2 (.800) in dual matches.

The Falcons won the first 11 matches of the season before finally losing a dual match in late March. BGSU’s streak was the best start to a season in school history, and tied the program record for longest winning streak (regardless of time of year).

Also in ’07-08, for the first time in program history, the Falcons were listed among the national rankings. BGSU debuted at No. 60 in the March 4 ITA poll, before moving up to 54th in the March 11 rankings. The following week, the Falcons were ranked 56th in the nation, before finally losing a match and dropping out of the polls.

That loss came at the hands of Eastern Michigan, but the Falcons avenged that setback with a win over the Eagles in the quarterfinal round of the MAC Championships. That win was Dean’s 200th victory at BGSU. Additionally, it helped her ’07-08 senior class, Jenna Nussbaum and Andrea Volle, conclude their careers as the winningest class in program history. BGSU won 55 matches during their four seasons, the most victories in a four-year span in program annals.

Dean’s ’08-09 senior class of Jakupcin, Menoff and Libby Harrison furthered that tradition, matching Nussbaum and Volle by recording a total of 55 dual-match wins during their four years with the program. And, the 2010-11 one-woman class of Christine Chiricosta also had 55 wins during her BG tenure.

The Falcons posted a 13-9 overall record in 2006-07, tying for fourth place in the MAC with a 4-4 league mark. The Falcons, the fourth seed for the MAC Championships, battled back from a 3-0 deficit in the quarterfinal-round match to post a 4-3 win over Miami.

Dean has led the Brown and Orange to double-digit win totals in 17 of her 21 seasons, including in each of the last nine campaigns. BGSU has posted double-digit win totals in nine consecutive years for the first time in school history. BG had had four-straight seasons of 10 wins or more on two prior occasions (1988-89 to 1991-92 and 1996-97 through 1999-2000), with Dean at the Falcon helm for half of the first streak and all of the second.

The 2005-06 Falcon squad reeled off a school-record 11-match winning streak (matched by the ’07-08 club) en route to a 14-10 ledger. That came on the heels of a 12-10 overall mark the season prior, after the Falcons had recorded a total of 10 victories in 2003-04.

In 2002-03, Dean’s Falcons were picked to finish seventh in the MAC’s preseason poll, but placed fifth with a 5-4 league record. That ’02-03 squad posted a four-match winning streak, the team’s longest in over two years, to end the regular season. All four wins came in MAC play, marking the team’s longest conference regular-season winning streak in nearly two decades.

Dean and the Falcons amassed a school-record 16 victories in 1998-99. Both that `98-99 team and the 1999-2000 squad tied the BGSU record for MAC wins in a season, each going 6-3 in league play.

Prior to joining the Falcons, Dean spent eight years as the tennis director at the Toledo Country Club, while also serving as tennis professional at Shadow Valley Tennis Club in Maumee.

Dean spent four years (1985-88) as head coach at The University of Toledo, leading the Rockets to fourth-place MAC finishes each year. Dean had a 46-44 dual-match record at UT.

Dean has experienced a great deal of success on both sides of the BGSU-UT rivalry, with her teams winning 21-of-29 matches. Dean had a perfect 5-0 record vs. BGSU during her four years with the Rockets. Since her arrival at BG, Dean has guided the Brown and Orange to a 16-8 record against UT.

Her coaching background also includes stints with the Northwest Ohio Junior Wightman Cup (1977-81, 1983-85) and Midwest Federation Cup teams (2000-01).

Dean was appointed by the governor to the Ohio Physical Fitness & Sports Advisory Board, serving a three-year stint. She also served as a tennis pro at the Toledo Racquet Club, holding that position from 1976-84.

Dean has worked with the Ethel Parker multicultural tennis program for inner-city youth in Toledo for the past five summers. She is a 14-time winner of the Toledo City Championships, having collected five singles titles and nine doubles crowns. In October, 1998, her league team, competing at the 4.5 level, won the state and Midwest District playoffs and advanced to national play in Tucson, Ariz.

A 1967 graduate of the University of Michigan with a degree in business administration, Dean played four years (1963-67) of tennis for the Wolverines.

Dean and her husband, Bill, reside in Toledo. The couple has two children: Debby and Michael, a BGSU graduate.

ASSISTANT COACH CINDY YONKER

CINDY YONKERASSISTANT COACH • THIRD SEASON AT BGSU

BOWLING GREEN, 1997

Yonker

Cindy Yonker, one of the top players in BGSU tennis history, returned to her alma mater to join the staff of her collegiate coach. Head coach Penny Dean announced Yonker’s hiring on Sept. 1, 2009.

“I am very excited to have Cindy join the BGSU tennis staff,” said Dean at the time of Yonker’s hiring. “She has a wealth of knowledge and experience and will hit the court running.”

Yonker has helped the Falcons to an overall dual-match record of 27-18 in her first two years on Dean’s staff. The Brown and Orange went 12-10 in 2009-10, and improved to 15-8 in ‘10-11.

The 2010-11 Falcons, picked to place seventh in the Mid-American Conference in the preseason coaches poll, finished fourth in the nine-team league, posting a 5-3 league ledger. BGSU downed Toledo, 4-0, in the quarterfinal round of the MAC Championships to advance to the semifinals.

Yonker, a native of nearby Perrysburg, Ohio, spent four years as head coach at Webster University in St. Louis, Mo. She was named the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in both 2000 and 2003, her first and last seasons there. Yonker guided the Gorloks to three second-place finishes and one third-place result in the eight-team conference.

At BGSU, Yonker (maiden name Mikolajewski) earned Mid-American Conference honors in each of her four years. An all-league second-team pick as a freshman in 1993-94, she earned honorable mention in her sophomore season. Yonker was an All-MAC First-Team pick in each of her final two years in the Brown and Orange.

In her senior year of 1996-97, Yonker posted a total of 43 wins, the second-highest single-season victory total in school history at the time. A team tri-captain, she was named to the Academic All-MAC Team in addition to earning all-league honors on the court that season.

Yonker had begun her career by tying the BGSU record with 23 singles wins as a freshman, and was the runner-up at No. 3 singles at that year’s MAC Championships. As a soph in 1995, Yonker was the recipient of the MAC’s Leann Grimes Davidge Sportsmanship Award.

She finished her career as the winningest player in school history, with 143 combined career wins. Yonker was second on the doubles wins list (68) and was tied for second on the singles victories chart (75) upon the conclusion of her career in 1997.

Heading into the spring of 2012, Yonker still ranks sixth in BGSU history in overall wins. She is tied for eighth in career singles victories, and ranks 11th in doubles wins.

Yonker received her Bachelor of Arts degree in business education from BGSU in 1997. She and her husband, Bob, a former BGSU men’s tennis player, have three children and reside in Perrysburg.

THE MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE

MEET THE MACSince its inception in 1946, the Mid-American Conference has progressively grown and de-veloped into one of the most aggressive Division I conferences in the country. One of only 11 football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conferences, the MAC named Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher as its eighth commissioner in the 65-year history of the league in March of 2009. Stein-brecher came to the MAC after serving six years as the commissioner of the Ohio Valley Conference.

HISTORY OF THE MACBased in Cleveland since July 1999 following a 15-year stay in Toledo, Ohio, the MAC has established historic measurements in both football and men’s and women’s basketball since moving to Northeast Ohio.

The MAC was founded as a five-school league on February 24, 1946 in Columbus, Ohio with Ohio, Butler, Cincinnati, Wayne State and Western Reserve admitted as charter members. The Mid-American Conference has 12 full-time schools and a 13th, Temple, for football only. Comprising the East Division is the University of Akron (joined in 1992), Bowling Green State University (1952), University at Buffalo (1998), Kent State Universi-ty (1951), Miami University (1947), Ohio University (1946) and Temple University (2007). The West Division members are Ball State University (1973), Central Michigan University (1971), Eastern Michigan University (1971), Northern Illinois University (1975-86, 1997), University of Toledo (1950) and Western Michigan University (1947).

In 1946 men’s basketball was the first competitive sport in the MAC, which now sponsors a total of 23 sports. Women’s sports were brought into the conference’s structure in 1980.

23 SPORTSFor men, championships (11) are sponsored in football, basketball, baseball, cross country, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, golf and tennis.

For women, championships (12) are sponsored in basketball, softball, volleyball, cross country, field hockey, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, gymnastics, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis.

Christine Chiricosta accepts the Mid-American Conference’s Faculty Athletics Represen-tative (FAR) Academic Achievement Award from MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher. The award recognizes the conference institution with the overall highest GPA by gender. BGSU’s female student-athletes have won the award in two of the first three years of its existence, and the Falcon tennis team was one of four women’s sports to have the highest team GPA among all league schools in their respective sport in 2009-10.

HALL-OF-FAMERCARLA MARSHACK

In September of 2006, Carla Marshack became the first-ever Falcon women’s tennis player to be named to the BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame.

Marshack, a native of Riverwoods, Ill., was the first BGSU female tennis player to capture a MAC singles title, winning the crown at the number-one flight in her senior year of 1992. The team’s No. 1 singles player in all four of her years in the Brown and Orange, Marshack also was the school’s first player to earn the top seed for the MAC Championships, doing so in her sophomore year of 1990.

Marshack set school records for singles wins in a season (23) and career (75) and total career wins (124). Though those marks have since been broken, she still ranks among BGSU’s top-10 on each list. A two-time academic all-league and academic all-district selection, she was named the Falcon Club Outstanding Junior Student-Athlete in 1991 and the BGSU Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year in ‘92. In her senior year, Marshack was BGSU’s female nominee for the MAC’s Bob James Award, given to the top student-athletes (one male, one female) in the conference.

No discussion of tennis at Bowling Green would be complete without mentioning the name Robert J. Keefe. During his 23-year tenure at Bowling Green, Keefe became the first full-time coach of the Falcon men’s tennis squad and was inducted into the BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997.

Keefe, a Navy veteran of World War II, embarked upon what he thought would be a long-term professorial career at the University of Saskatchewan when he learned of an opening at Bowling Green in 1955. Not only would it put the family close to in-laws in Oberlin, Ohio, but more importantly, it included the opportunity to coach tennis and teach future teachers, his daughter said.

He never had any misgivings about his choice to be a teacher, Mr. Keefe added, noting that many of his students and team players stayed in touch with him over the years.

Keefe, as mentioned, was the first full-time tennis coach at BG, serving in that capacity from 1955 until 1968. His teams compiled an 83-76 record, including the 1964 Mid-American Conference championship (BGSU tied Miami for the league crown). That team also posted an undefeated record in 15 dual matches. Between 1962-64, Keefe’s Falcon teams compiled a 34-5 dual-match record.

In 1980, the tennis facility at BGSU was named in his honor. While coaching at BG, Keefe was also a full-time professor in the health, physical education and recreation department. Keefe served as the Dean of the College of Education for six years upon his retirement from coaching.

He also started the curling club, a legacy of his two years in Saskatchewan, at BGSU, and regularly attended many University sporting events.

He earned his undergraduate degree in English from Brooklyn College in 1940 and his master’s and doctorate degrees from Columbia in 1941 and 1952, respectively.

He and Frances, his wife of 63 years, had two daughters, Carolyn Keefe and Barbara Hall, along with two grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.Robert J. Keefe, 87, a professor emeritus of health and physical education at BGSU, passed away at Wood County Hospital in January of 2006.
