OLGA ELKINHEAD COACH • FIRST SEASON AT BGSU

WEST VIRGINIA, 2010

HEAD COACH OLGA ELKIN

Olga Elkin is in her first season at the helm of the Bowling Green State University tennis program. BGSU Director of Athletics D. Christopher Kingston announced Elkin’s hiring on August 18, 2014.

“I would like to thank Chris Kingston and the entire search committee for this incredible opportunity,” said Elkin at the time of her hiring. “It’s a huge honor to have been chosen to lead a program that has such a rich history and tremendous potential, and I’m extremely excited to be joining the Bowling Green family.”

Elkin came to Northwest Ohio after two highly-successful seasons as head women’s tennis coach at Murray State University. She led the Racers to a 17-3 record in Ohio Valley Conference matches during that time. In her first season at the helm, MSU finished with an 8-2 conference mark, the program’s best OVC record since the 2006-07 season. Then, last year, the Racers posted a 9-1 league ledger, won the OVC regular-season and tournament titles, and advanced to the NCAA Championships. MSU was 16-6 overall in 2013-14, and Elkin was named OVC Coach of the Year.

The regular-season title was the program’s first since 2003, and the conference tournament championship was MSU’s first since 2007.

“Olga is a winner and a champion, and she has achieved the success we expect to achieve at BGSU,” said Kingston. “She knows how to prepare her teams for academic and competitive greatness, and we are thrilled to have her join Falcon Athletics.”

Elkin’s first season at MSU saw the Racers post an overall record of 11-9 and that 8-2 conference record, earning the No. 3 seed for the OVC Championships. MSU had one student-athlete named to the All-OVC First Team and two selections on the all-conference second team. In her second year at the helm, Elkin again saw three student-athletes named to the all-league team, with one first-team and a pair of second-team selections. Additionally, highlights of the 2013-14 campaign included the first nationally-ranked player (freshman Eleonore Tchakarova) in program history.

In the classroom, Elkin’s team had the school’s highest year-end grade-point average, with the Racer tennis team earning a combined GPA of 3.64 in the 2013-14 academic year.

In addition to earning OVC Coach-of-the-Year honors in 2013-14, Elkin was voted Murray State’s C-O-Y.

Prior to MSU, Elkin spent two seasons as a graduate assistant coach at Kennesaw State University, a period which included a brief stint as interim head coach during the 2010-11 season. Elkin helped the Owls to the best season in program history that year, as the team recorded the most overall wins (18) and conference victories (seven) in program annals. KSU had the first conference freshman of the year as well as the first nationally-ranked player in school history during her two-year stint. The Owls had a total of seven All-Atlantic Sun Conference honorees during those two seasons.

WICHITA STATE, 2011

Dalmacio

Stephanie Dalmacio is in her first season as assistant coach of the Bowling Green State University tennis program. Head coach Olga Elkin announced Dalmacio’s hiring in January of 2015.

“I would like to thank Coach Elkin for giving me this opportunity to assist her in coaching such a great group of dedicated young athletes,” said Dalmacio. “I am super excited to be part of the Falcon family!”

Dalmacio brings a variety of experiences as a player and a coach to the Falcons. She spent the 2013-14 season as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Northern Iowa, helping the Panthers to a 12-12 overall mark.

“I could not be more thrilled to have Stephanie joining the Falcon family,” said Elkin. “Steph and I were teammates, we worked well together then, and I expect us to start right where we left off years ago.

“Steph is hard-working, determined, and competitive. She played for a team ranked as high as 12th in the country, so she knows what it takes to get to that level and won’t settle for less. Her degree in sports psychology along with her motivation and knowledge of the game will help us take BG Tennis to the next level.”

Dalmacio served as a student assistant coach at Wichita State University, her alma mater, during the 2010-11 academic year, and also has been a tennis professional at various locales, including the Cliff Drysdale Tennis Center in Key Biscayne, Fla.; Manursing Island Club in Rye, N.Y.; Buckskill Tennis Club in East Hampton, N.Y.; Point O’Woods Tennis in Bay Shore, N.Y.; and KTC Quail Tennis Club in Dayton, Ohio.

A four-year letterwinner at Wichita State, she helped the Shockers to three Missouri Valley Conference championships, earning all-conference honors in singles in all four seasons (2007-10) and in doubles in three of those four years. Dalmacio won an MVC title at the number-one singles flight in 2009 after winning a conference championship at the top doubles flight the previous year. In 2010, Dalmacio teamed up with Delia Damaschin to qualify as individuals for the NCAAs, and that duo earned All-America honors.

THE MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE

MEET THE MACSince its inception in 1946, the Mid-American Conference has progressively grown and de-veloped into one of the most aggressive Division I conferences in the country. One of only 11 football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) conferences, the MAC named Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher as its eighth commissioner in the 66-year history of the league in March of 2009. Stein-brecher came to the MAC after serving six years as the commissioner of the Ohio Valley Conference.

HISTORY OF THE MACBased in Cleveland since July 1999 following a 15-year stay in Toledo, Ohio, the MAC has established historic measurements in both football and men’s and women’s basketball since moving to Northeast Ohio.

The MAC was founded as a five-school league on February 24, 1946 in Columbus, Ohio with Ohio, Butler, Cincinnati, Wayne State and Western Reserve admitted as charter members. The Mid-American Conference has 12 full-time schools and a 13th, Temple, for football only. Comprising the East Division is the University of Akron (joined in 1992), Bowling Green State University (1952), University at Buffalo (1998), Kent State Universi-ty (1951), Miami University (1947), Ohio University (1946) and Temple University (2007). The West Division members are Ball State University (1973), Central Michigan University (1971), Eastern Michigan University (1971), Northern Illinois University (1975-86, 1997), University of Toledo (1950) and Western Michigan University (1947).

In 1946 men’s basketball was the first competitive sport in the MAC, which now sponsors a total of 23 sports. Women’s sports were brought into the conference’s structure in 1980.

23 SPORTSFor men, championships (11) are sponsored in football, basketball, baseball, cross country, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, golf and tennis.

For women, championships (12) are sponsored in basketball, softball, volleyball, cross country, field hockey, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, gymnastics, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis.

NOT.Anyways to add for media guide next year. Also Carla Marshack received the Junior Falcon Club Award! And I did not see Senior Scholar-Athlete Award in there, but Christine and Carla both got that. I “believe” Carla graduated in 1992 so it would have been 91 and 92.Better luck next year! LOL, Penny

HALL-OF-FAMERCARLA MARSHACK

In September of 2006, Carla Marshack became the first-ever Falcon women’s tennis player to be named to the BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame.

Marshack, a native of Riverwoods, Ill., was the first BGSU female tennis player to capture a MAC singles title, winning the crown at the number-one flight in her senior year of 1992. The team’s No. 1 singles player in all four of her years in the Brown and Orange, Marshack also was the school’s first player to earn the top seed for the MAC Championships, doing so in her sophomore year of 1990.

Marshack set school records for singles wins in a season (23) and career (75) and total career wins (124). Though those marks have since been broken, she still ranks among BGSU’s top-10 on each list. A two-time academic all-league and academic all-district selection, she was named the Falcon Club Outstanding Junior Student-Athlete in 1991 and the BGSU Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year in ‘92. In her senior year, Marshack was BGSU’s female nominee for the MAC’s Bob James Award, given to the top student-athletes (one male, one female) in the conference.

No discussion of tennis at Bowling Green would be complete without mentioning the name Robert J. Keefe. During his 23-year tenure at Bowling Green, Keefe became the first full-time coach of the Falcon men’s tennis squad and was inducted into the BGSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1997.

Keefe, a Navy veteran of World War II, embarked upon what he thought would be a long-term professorial career at the University of Saskatchewan when he learned of an opening at Bowling Green in 1955. Not only would it put the family close to in-laws in Oberlin, Ohio, but more importantly, it included the opportunity to coach tennis and teach future teachers, his daughter said.

He never had any misgivings about his choice to be a teacher, Mr. Keefe added, noting that many of his students and team players stayed in touch with him over the years.

Keefe, as mentioned, was the first full-time tennis coach at BG, serving in that capacity from 1955 until 1968. His teams compiled an 83-76 record, including the 1964 Mid-American Conference championship (BGSU tied Miami for the league crown). That team also posted an undefeated record in 15 dual matches. Between 1962-64, Keefe’s Falcon teams compiled a 34-5 dual-match record.

In 1980, the tennis facility at BGSU was named in his honor. While coaching at BG, Keefe was also a full-time professor in the health, physical education and recreation department. Keefe served as the Dean of the College of Education for six years upon his retirement from coaching.

ROBERT J. KEEFE / KEEFE COURTS

He also started the curling club, a legacy of his two years in Saskatchewan, at BGSU, and regularly attended many University sporting events.

Keefe earned his undergraduate degree in English from Brooklyn College in 1940 and his master’s and doctorate degrees from Columbia in 1941 and 1952, respectively.

He and Frances, his wife of 63 years, had two daughters, Carolyn Keefe and Barbara Hall, along with two grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. Keefe passed away at Wood County Hospital in January of 2006, at the age of 87.
