Austin Peay State University is a comprehensive, state-assisted university with a distinguished tradition in liberal and professional education. The institution is named in

honor of Austin Peay, Tennessee’s governor from 1924 until 1927, the year APSU was founded.

The university is located in Clarksville, Tenn., just 45 min-utes northwest of Tennessee’s capital, Nashville, on Interstate 24. One of the South’s most historic cities, Clarksville also is Tennessee’s third-fastest growing city behind only Memphis and Nashville.

Situated on gently rolling terrain near picturesque down-town Clarksville, Austin Peay’s main campus consists of 68

buildings on 169 acres. The classical Georgian architec-ture of the Austin Peay campus is combined with newer buildings. This blend provides a link with the past while reflecting the academic excellence and dignity of an institution of higher learning.

The newest building additions to the main campus are the Foy Fitnees and Recreation Center, Sundquist Science Complex and the new Morgan University Center, each opening for use since 2001. The $11-million Foy Center, features a rock-climbing wall and 10,000 square feet of fitness space and other amenities for the student body. The Sundquist Complex is one of the South’s premier science education facilities and represents the largest capital appropriation ever in Tennessee for a single class-room building. The new Morgan University Center is located in the heart of the campus and features a cybercafe, meeting rooms, a food court, coffee shop, ballroom and lounges for Austin Peay students.

Austin Peay’s campus has been the site of seven educational institutions since 1806. The cam-pus was occupied by Southwestern for 50 years until 1925 when the school moved to Memphis. Austin Peay was founded two years later as a two-year normal school to train teachers for the region. Austin Peay has grown over the years to take its place among the finest mid-sized four-year universities in the nation.

Austin Peay Normal School became a four-year college in

1941-42, and university status was conferred Sept. 1, 1967.Austin Peay State University currently enrolls more than 10,000 students

from every region of Tennessee, most of the 50 states and several foreign countries.

Austin Peay offers more than 50 majors in associate, bachelor’s, master’s and education specialist’s degrees with additional areas of concentration. Courses are offered in arts and sciences, business, education, engineering technology, nursing and human services. Graduate studies also are offered in several areas. In addition, numerous online courses are offered each semester.

A state leader in public service, Austin Peay State University has more than 750 employees. Engaged in the most modern teaching techniques and research are nearly 280 full-time faculty members, 90 percent of whom hold the earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degrees in their disciplines.

The Governors Tennis Center has been a part of Austin Peay athletics and the Clarksville community for nearly two de-cades. When the idea was broached to build an indoor tennis center on the APSU campus, the advantages were obvious for APSU students, the Governors and Lady Govs tennis programs and the local tennis community.

The indoor facility literally became a tennis “center” in northwest Ten-nessee. The site of Clarksville’s first indoor tennis center is located across the street from Governors Stadium and next to the stadium park-ing lot. It consists of four lighted courts. Dressing facilities for both men and women are provided.

The University actively seeks memberships from families, individuals and corporations. Students do not have to pay a membership fee but are charged a reduced court-time fee.

Combined with the recently renovated Governors Tennis Courts, Austin Peay possesses debatably the Ohio Valley Conference’s finest tennis facilities.

The Governors Tennis Center not only provides protection from the elements, but also al-lows for continous teaching and instruction by the Austin Peay coaching staff.

The recently resurfaced Austin Peay tennis courts remains the finest out-door tennis courts in the area. Consist-ing of eight lighted courts, the facility sits adjacent to the Foy Fitness and Recreation Center. The courts have new windscreens and bleacher seat-ing, along with a practice wall.

2009-10 APSU TENNIS HEADLINESNORBIATO NAMED FIRST-TEAM ALL-OVC; BAILEY SECOND TEAMBRENTWOOD - A pair of Austin Peay freshmen tennis players were honored by the Ohio Valley Conference, Thursday, as Hen-rique Norbiato was named first-team All-OVC while his doubles partner Sean Bailey received second-team recognition.

The freshman duo were a hit on the men’s team, with Norbiato playing No. 3 singles and Bailey playing at No. 1 singles, while teaming up together to play No. 1 doubles. It was their strong play that led the Govs to their first OVC Tournament since switching to the six-team format in 2006.

Norbiato, a Londrina, Brazil native, was perhaps the Govs most consistent performer for the Govs all season. He finished with a 10-2 record, including a 9-1 mark at No. 3 singles and a 5-2 OVC record. His OVC record includes a loss at No. 2 singles against Ten-nessee Tech’s Josh Girling at the conference season’s start. After moving back to No. 3 singles, he won five of his next six matches.

Only once in the spring did Norbiato have an opponent take him into a three-set match, which he won against Kennesaw State’s Simon Janik. For the most part, the Brazilian freshman made quick work of his opponents with his steady style of play. His play over the last week, which included three league wins, led to his being named the OVC Player of the week. Norbiato is the first first-team honoree from Austin Peay since the league changed to the two-team All-OVC format beginning with the 2005 season.

Bailey, a Manitoba, Canada native, has faced a tough challenge for a first-year freshman in having to play No. 1 singles, where he posted an 8-8 overall record and a 2-5 league mark. A studious player, Bailey’s drive off the court has led to his continued improve-ment, which is evident in his results.

Bailey opened the fall with a three-set loss to SIU Edwardsville’s Paulo Gonzalez, but later defeated Gonzalez in straight sets. He also lost a fall match to Kennesaw State’s Gianni Kubin but won the rematch giving up only one game.

TOMIC AND WEIKARD HIGHLIGHT OVC TENNIS AWARDSBRENTWOOD, Tenn. -Austin Peay State University women’s tennis has dominated the Ohio Valley Conference post-season awards. Sophomore Vanja Tomic was named OVC Player of the Year while Carolin Weikard was chosen Freshman of the Year. In addition, first-year APSU coach Malik Tabet was named OVC Co-Coach of the Year.

In fact, Tomic, APSU’s standout No. 1 singles player, and Weikard, who equally is effective at No. 2, were named first-team All-OVC while senior teammates Mariana Pagan and Michelle Liew were selected second team.

In earning the league’s top player honor, Tomic’s selection marks the seventh time Austin Peay has earned the Women’s Player of the Year award. The three previous recipients - T.J. Kleynhans (1985-86), Shannon Peters (1990-91) and Susan Sheather (1992,1994) - each won the award twice and are all members of the Austin Peay Athletics Hall of Fame.

Weikard is the Lady Govs first Freshman of the Year selection, as the award was initiated for the 2005 season. Tabet, who shared the honor with Jacksonville State’s Steve Bailey, is the third Austin Peay coach to be named Coach of the Year (Doug Booth, 1986; and Charlotte Tennant, 1988).

Perhaps the season’s turning point came at the spring semester’s start when Tabet added Tomic and Weikard to the top of the lineup. Two obviously strong players allowed Tabet to move 2009 All-OVC selections Pagan and Liew to Nos. 3 and 4, respectively. As Tabet said many times, the middle of the lineup is where matches are won. That philosophy held true as the revamped Lady Govs tennis team made an unmistakable mark on the league.

Tomic led the league with a 16-2 overall record at No. 1 singles and a perfect 9-0 mark against OVC competition. A Banja Luca, Bosnia, native, Tomic had an inauspicious start to her season, losing two of her first three matches. However, after her second loss, Tomic re-bounded to go undefeated in the season’s remainder, playing only one three-set match along the way.

Weikard struggled with the transition early on to college tennis. She won her first two matches, but then dropped two of her next three. When OVC play rolled around, Weikard began to find her groove. She won back-to-back three-set matches - at Jacksonville State against first-team All-OVC selection Martina Dessbesell and at Tennessee Tech. On the doubles side, Weikard teamed with Liew before eventually changing to senior Yuki Nakamura. Wiekard and Nakamura finished the season winning seven straight matches at No.2 doubles.

This marks the second straight season Pagan has received All-OVC recognition, being named first-team last season. A senior from Brazil, Pagan played at No.3 singles where she was 15-2 with a 7-2 OVC record. At one point in the season, Pagan won 11 straight matches before falling in three sets to UT Martin’s Martie Wahl - a 2010 first-team All-OVC pick. Pagan paired with Tomic at No.1 doubles and dropped only one OVC match for a 14-3 overall mark and an 8-1 league record.

Liew was named second-team All-OVC for a second time, as well. She played at No. 4 singles where she 14-5 overall with a 7-2 OVC record. Unlike last season, three of Liew’s five losses came in three-set matches. For the most part, she made quick work of her opponents while rounding out the Lady Govs lineup. On the doubles side, Liew played at No.3 where she was 12-9 overall in-cluding a 5-3 league mark.

Malik Tabet, the 2010 Ohio Valley Conference co-Coach of the Year, completed an impressive turnaround of Austin Peay State University’s tennis programs with the women’s team winning the OVC Tournament Championship.

Tabet also is responsible for sophomore Vanja Tomic winning OVC Player of the Year and freshman Carolin Weikard being named OVC Freshman of the Year.

Not only was it the first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance for the Lady Govs, they did it by winning 12 straight matches. It was a 16-game improvement and the best regular-season fin-ish (second-place) since the late 1980s.

The Govs, meanwhile, had two All-OVC selections - first-team pick Henrique Norbiato and second-team selection Sean Bai-ley. After getting off to a rough start, the men closed with three straight wins to earn the OVC Tournament’s fifth-seed. It was the first tourney appearance for the Govs since 2005.

A former two-time Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year, Tabet was named Austin Peay State University’s head tennis coach in August 2009.

The previous spring, the French national completed his fifth full season as Indiana State’s women’s coach and first as men’s coach. However, in a cost-cutting move, both Sycamore tennis programs were indefinitely suspended in mid-May.

In a five-year period, he led the Sycamore women to three Mis-souri Valley regular-season championships (2005, 2006, 2008) and an NCAA tournament appearance in 2008 following the Sycamores’ MVC tourney championship. His women’s tennis was ranked as high as 59th in country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in 2007 and 68th the following season.

One of his players, Jennifer Migan, received an to the 2008 NCAA Individual Tournament and was ranked as high as No. 48 nationally and propelled his No. 1 doubles team to as high as No. 20 nationally.

Overall, Indiana State players won 12 singles championship and six double titles at MVC Individuals (fall) with a total of 12 players earning All-MVC honors.

Tabet was named Missouri Valley Coach of the Year in 2005

and 2008 while earning ITA Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 2007.

Tabet took over the Indiana State University women’s program in January 2004 after the retirement of Mary Ann Stadler. Before joining the Sycamores, Tabet served as an assistant coach of the women’s tennis team at the University of Arkansas in 2003.

He also had experience as the men’s associate head coach at the University of New Orleans from 2001-03. While with the Privateers, UNO jumped from seventh to third in just one sea-son before earning a second-place finish in the Sun Belt Con-ference during his second year in charge. Along the way, the Privateers earned a national ranking (No. 62) for the first time in school history. UNO’s No. 1 singles player was ranked in the top 50 nationally, while the No. 1 doubles team climbed into the nation’s top 40.

As a college athlete Tabet played a significant role in propel-ling the University of Mobile (Ala.) to the 1997 NAIA National Championship. Ranked as high as fifth in the nation in singles, and 12th in doubles for the Rams during 1997, Mobile finished the 1998 season second in the NAIA national tourney, the same season Tabet was ranked as high as 10th in singles, and eighth in doubles. In 1997 and 1998 the University of Mobile won the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championship with Tabet earn-ing NAIA All-American each year.

After transferring to the University of West Florida his senior season, Tabet helped the Argonauts earn the 1999 Gulf South Conference Championship and a third-place finish at the 1999 NCAA Division II National Tournament. He was named a Divi-sion II All-American after attaining rakings in singles (No. 12) and doubles (No. 18) play.

After a successful college playing career, Tabet moved into coaching, landing the head position for both the West Georgia men and women’s tennis teams from 2000-01. In addition to his coaching duties, Tabet served as the program’s primary fund-raiser, generating revenue through clinics and pro-am tourna-ments. While at West Georgia, Tabet led the women’s team to the Division II Gulf South Regional.

Tabet also enjoyed a standout career as an international player, competing for the Algerian National Team from 1991-95, as well as the Algerian Davis Cup team. He won more than 90 tourna-ments in France. Tabet won the 1995 Sham International Tennis Open in Damascus Syria before taking top honors at the 1995 Gillette International Tennis Open in Rosas, Spain. In 1996 and 1997, he was champion of the French Rhone-Alps Region and qualified for the French National Championship, held at Rolland Garros, in Paris.

A 1999 magna cum laude graduate of the University of Mo-bile, Tabet earned a bachelor’s degree in foreign languages and holds a master’s in applied linguistics from the University of New Orleans, where he worked in the foreign language depart-ment as a French instructor. Tabet also earned a baccalaureate in accounting from CUEFA in Grenoble, France.

JOSEPH VANN

ASSISTANT COACH1st Season

When head coach Malik Tabet looked to further his staff, he found Joseph Vann, formerly of Division III power the Univer-sity of Texas-Tyler, to be a perfect fit.

Vann brings more than five years of experience as a player and coach at the Division III level. As a student-athlete, he excelled on the doubles side. In fact, he posted a .652 dou-bles winning percentage during his career as a Patriot, with the team winning three American Southwest Conference (ASC) East championships. He also ranks in the top-15 all-time with 30 doubles wins.

His coaching career is made up of similar success, work-ing with both men and women’s teams. From 2007-09, he worked alongside head coach Chris Bizot to win three ASC East titles, with both men and women’s teams, and advanced to the 2008 and 2009 NCAA Division III Regionals. That run included seven players named Division III All-Americans and four qualifiers for the ITA’s Small College “Super Bowl”.

At Austin Peay, Vann again will assist with both the men and women’s programs, while also assisting with Governors In-door Tennis Center.

BOB FAIRES

Tennis CenterManager

Bob Faires brings more than 35 years of administrative ex-perience to the table, serving as the Tennis Center Manager for his sixth year.

Faires was joined Austin Peay’s staff in October 2004 and currently manages the Governors Indoor Center and over-sees the operation and maintenance for the indoor and out-door courts. He works extensively in promoting APSU tennis activities through on-campus leagues, clinics and schedul-ing lessons.

A combat-wounded Veteran, Faires was a helicopter pilot for the Army Reserves during the Vietnam War. Upon retire-ment from the Army Reserves, Faires worked more than 35 years as a civilian for the Army Continuing Education Sys-tem. In fact, he later retired as the director of Fort Campbell’s Army Education Center.

While at Fort Campbell, he worked closely in maintaining relationships with Austin Peay, Murray State, Embry Riddle Aeronautical, Hopkinsville Community College and City Col-leges of Chicago. He served on Austin Peay President Sher-ry Hoppe’s President’s Cabinet, as he facilitated Austin Peay degree programs at Fort Campbell.

His connections to Austin Peay and his love for tennis made Faires a perfect fit with the Govs and Lady Govs tennis pro-grams. Faires assists head coach Malik Tabet in a variety of capacities, including overseeing the Tennis Center bud-get, coordinating matches and tournaments, and organizing team travel.

Faires is a long-time tennis player, who at one time, was ranked by the USTA in Tennessee’s 55-59 age group. Faires, with his wife Mickie, a retired elementary school teacher, will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary in 2011.

LADY GOVS, 2010 OVC CHAMPS!PADUCAH, Ky. – Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year Carolin Weikard won the deciding match in three sets to lead Austin Peay women’s tennis team to the 2010 OVC Tournament cham-pionship and an NCAA Tournament berth, Sunday, at the Heflin Tennis Center.

“I told our players to be careful and stick to what you do well,” first-year head coach Malik Tabet said. “This is what you play for all year. When you carry that trophy, it makes it all worth while. I’m very excited that we have been able to put a print in this conference, and we’re going to build on it.”

This is what you play for – leading three matches to two, Austin Peay women’s tennis team was only a breath away from its fourth OVC championship. The Lady Govs already had wins at No. 1 from OVC Player of the Year Vanja Tomic and at No. 6 from senior Yuki Nakamura.

Weikard and Pagan, at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, each lost their first sets, but won the second. Eastern Kentucky, meanwhile, was on its last leg in looking for a repeat.

“Carolin is an aggressive player and she needed to come out and get the point at the net,” Tabet said. “I told her to forget about the first set and this was a new match. She dug in and I’m really proud of how she fought for that match. I told her to finish this match at the net and she responded well.”

Weikard jumped out to a 5-2 lead against Jessica Albuquerque in her third set before getting hit with cramps in her right leg. Albuquerque rallied with a series of deep lobs in attempt to keep the taller Weikard off the net and was successful in doing so. With each match point, Weikard battled and Albu-querque continued to hold her off.

The match eventually tied at 5-5 and Weikard had enough, pushing Albu-querque back with deep lobs. She narrowed the court with her long frame and claimed the deciding win in a dominant fashion.

“(The match) was full of ups and downs,” Weikard said. “I was exhausted and really tired. All the (Govs tennis team) supporting

me helped me a lot. I had to fight and that’s what I did. In the first set, I made a lot of unforced errors and she kept the ball in play. In the last two, I gave the ball more spin and did a better job of moving around and getting to the net.”

Weikard got off to a slow start after teaming with Nakamura for a convincing win at No. 2 doubles, 8-0. After sophomore Demi Geor-gakopoulos and Michelle Leiw fell, 8-6, at No. 3, it all came down to Tomic and Pagan in match of swapping points. Austin Peay’s duo won the last two games to force the tiebreaker, where they won the first four points en route to a 7-3 tiebreak win.

Nakamura battled a sore foot at No.6 singles, but rolled to a (7-5, 6-3) win, while Tomic made quick work of Myriem Mhirit at No. 1. Pagan, meanwhile, was ahead 5-2 in her third set when Weikard won the deciding match.

“It’s championship time,” Tabet said. “They wanted it as much as we did and they played like it. It’s a different battle out here. I told our players, when you get to the tournament, it’s a different dy-namic. Anybody can win – you’ve just got to believe. We believed more than they did today.”

LADY GOVS AT NCAA TOURNAMENTTOMIC AND PAGAN STRONG IN LADY GOVS NCAA TOURNEY LOSSATLANTA - Although the final score showed Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team losing 4-0 to 13th-ranked Georgia Tech in NCAA Women’s Tennis Championship first-round action, the Lady Govs found much solace in defeat.

It was the Lady Govs first loss in 13 matches since falling to Jacksonville State, March 6. Austin Peay lost the doubles point to Georgia Tech, along with Nos. 4, 5 and 6 singles for the match.

In the program’s first-ever NCAA championship appearance, the Lady Govs achieved solace in the fact that their singles play was not as far off as the numbers suggested. Georgia Tech boasts the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s No. 1 player in Irina Falconi and a team that knocked off three top-10 teams in order to host the regional.

“We played solid,” head coach Malik Tabet said. “We were comfort-able and didn’t seem nervous at all. Georgia Tech is a really good team and I’m proud of the way we came after them and played hard. We kept our composure and I’m very happy by the show of our players.”

Although Falconi won the first set against sophomore Vanja Tomic, the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year made quick adjust-ments and led 4-2 in the second set when play ended. Senior Mari-ana Pagan dropped the opener at No. 3 singles to Sasha Krupina, but also was ahead 4-1 in the second set.

The Lady Govs did not come out strong against the Yellow Jackets in the doubles competition. Sophomore Demi Georgakopoulos and senior Michelle Liew were the first to fall, at No.3, while freshman Carolin Weikard and senior Yuki Nakamura followed with an 8-3 loss at No. 2.

A short intermission was not enough to reset the Lady Govs, as they came out to drop the first set in all six singles matches. While Tomic and Pagan were able to make adjustments for the second set, the rest of the team was not able to pull it off. The Yellow Jack-ets ran away with straight-set wins in the bottom three matches.

The unfinished matches means that Tomic ends the season with a 17-match win streak intact, while Weikard will carry a 13-match streak as well into next season.

“It’s a good memory to end your career for the seniors and a good experience for the returning players to build on next season,” Ta-bet said. “It’s important to know what’s out there after the confer-ence tournament. There was no predicting that we would be in the NCAAs, but I feel like we did a good job preparing and I think we peaked at the right time.”
