Horticulture Basics® is a training program designed to help businesses

educate their entry level employees within the industry sectors of Nursery, Landscape and Retail. Training offers your employees a step in the right direction with foundational and practical industry specific skills necessary for improved efficiency and effectiveness on the jobsite. Benefits range from enhanced skill, competence and confidence of staff, and help to advance your business professionalism in the horticulture industry.

Year-round educational training sessions are free to eligible employees and are posted on the BCLNA website Google Calendar at: www.BCLNA.com. A special six-week Comprehensive Training Series is also available and may be customized to fit your

Funding provided through the Canada - British Columbia Labour Market Agreement

Employed clients who meet one or more of the following criteria are eligible for the program:

1) Lack a high school diploma, or

2) Have high school, but lack certification recognized in Canada (Recognized credentials mean any credentials/certifications

License, Commercial Diver certificate etc.), or

3) Have high school and recognized credentials, but lack Essential Skills*.

4) Post secondary (courses not completed for purposes of a degree)

*Essential Skills means the nine essential skills identified by Human Resources and Social Development Canada, these are: reading text, document use, numeracy, writing, oral communication, working with others, thinking skills, computer use and continuous learning.

BCLNA supports and encourages certification programs to raise the level of skills in the landscape and competence or skill level is usually accomplished through written and practical evaluations. An Industry Certification designation demonstrates a standard of hands on proficiency that supports your education.

CLP Landscape Industry Certified Manager: This in depth program was created for green industry business owners and top managers. The CLP designation indicates knowledge of the varied skills needed to run a business or business unit successfully. Candidates must complete written exams in seven topic areas.

CLD Landscape Industry Certified Designer: The Certified Landscape Designer designation is available only to those individuals who have seven years of experience (either practical, or a combination of academic and practical). Candidates present a portfolio for review by a panel of industry judges and write an exam to evaluate the

knowledge of grading, horticulture, plant identification, construction details and design skill.

CLT Landscape Industry Certified Technician and CHT Landscape Industry Certified Retail Horticulturist: The CLT and CHT program is designed for employees in the horticulture industry who are involved in the technical application of skills and knowledge.

HortEducationBC is the Industry Training Organization for Horticulture trades and is a partner of the Industry Training Authority of British Columbia. It is mandate to: Promote, develop, coordinate and manage the

delivery of effective and efficient industry training

and qualifications in the BC ornamental horticulture industry by responding to the skills and training

HortEducationBC is involved in setting industry training standards within the apprenticeship programs. They assist apprentices and sponsors to ensure they have a rewarding experience while mentoring and training within the industry.

My role at the BCLNA is fantastic! I get to provide expertise for and oversight of the various marketing initiatives the association pursues. Our team is responsible for all of the special events, our various publications, and our presence at garden shows throughout BC. We work

strategic marketing plans to designing flyers and everything in between. In addition to this, we also

horticulture show CanWest. This show features a stellar educational program, first class industry tours, and a trade show floor boasting 430+ booths.

Soil is a very complex living organism. Soils provide our plants with a medium for growth and supply these organisms with most of their nutritional requirements. The nutrient status of soils not only limits both plant growth, but also the productivity of our corps. Soil fertility and plant nutrients will be discussed and related to plant growth. Soil bioremediation, food chains and webs in the soil, the rhizosphere, soil symbioses, soil biology, and soil conservation are just a few of the topics to be discussed.

Mario is the owner / operator of CropHealth Advising & Research, a company offering services related to Plant Health Care to public agencies, landscape companies, golf courses, nurseries and greenhouses throughout Western Canada. Rob is an Instructor of Landscape Horticulture at Kwantlen Polytechnic University where he has taught for a number of years. Prior to his employment at Kwantlen, Rob was an instructor with Capilano College.

RUSS WILSON

Russ Wilson has been a part of the Davey Tree Expert Co. team for over 10 years. His field of experience consists of climbing, stump grinding, planting, fertilization, maintenance and restorative tree pruning, hazard tree removal, advanced rigging and on the job training;; as well as writing and hosting training programs, sales and customer service.

Russ is an ISA Certified Arborist and an ISA Certified Climber Specialist Tree Worker;; he is a Davey certified crane operator and has also been a competitor in the Pacific Northwest Chapter Tree Climbing Competition for 6 years.

Russ is a graduate of the class of 2009 from the Davey Institute of Tree Sciences. He has also completed The Davey advanced Arborist training program in 2005, followed by instructing the Davey advanced Arborist training program in 2008 and 2009. Russ has also completed Arboriculture
