Season Outlook

2008 was a season of fi rsts for head coach Noelle Rooke and the Mercer volleyball program. Rooke moved into fi rst place among the pro-gram’s winningest coaches. In her fi fth season with the team, Rooke became the fi rst Mercer coach to be named Atlantic Sun Coach of the Year. The Bears tallied a program-best conference win total (13) and highest win total in 12 seasons (18). In 2009, Rooke and her staff are on a mission to mark an-other Mercer fi rst: a confer-ence championship and bid to the NCAA Championship bracket.

Capturing the league title will be a challenge, as the Bears seek to replace two departed all-con- fer-ence seniors and the program’s all-time assist leader.

SETTERThe 2009 Bears are led by a lone senior, Chelsea Gebben. Gebben adds valuable experience to the roster with 832 career assists at the setter posi-tion. Gebben has been a part of 37 wins over the

past three seasons and is the clear leader of the young squad.

“Gebben has the eye to run our off ense and knows this team inside and out,” said Rooke.

Also returning at the setter position is sophomore Nickie Halbert. Halbert joined the Bears in 2008, dishing out 72 assists in just 26 sets played. “Halbert can pick apart op-posing defensive schemes,” said Rooke. “We’re confi -dent when she takes control of the off ense.”

MIDDLE BLOCKERSOne of the strengths of

the 2009 Bears team is the duo of juniors at

the middle blocker position. Libby Hansch and Krista Hurley pro-vide a one-

two punch that is among the league’s best at the net. A year ago, the

two combined for over 400 kills and 232 regular season blocks. Behind the

strength of the combo, Mer-cer ranked second among conference teams in blocks per set.

This season the Bears have welcomed the arrival of sophomore newcomer Char-layna Braxton. A transfer from UAB, Braxton adds depth at the position. “Brax-ton is a strong, powerful, explosive athlete who uses her speed and agility to her advantage,” Rooke said.

OUTSIDE HITTERAs a freshman last season, Amiee Frutchey asserted herself as one of the confer-ence’s top outside hitters. Frutchey garnered a confe A-Sun all-freshman team selec-tion after amassing 165 kills.

“Around the league our op-ponents expect Frutchey to be a dominant force,” Rooke said. “Frutchey will shoulder the load for our off ense this year.”

Rachel Urbelis is another sophomore at the outside hitter position who had an impact on Mercer’s 2008 success. The 6-1 outside hit-ter piled up 80 kills a season ago, including a personal

g, as the ace two

best 12 kills in the Bears’ win over Auburn on Aug. 30.

“Urbelis is a crunch-time player who performs best in the clutch,” Rooke said. “Her ideal height and fl uid mechanics allow her to make plays others can’t.”

Joining Mercer’s rotation at outside hitter is Jamie Duff y. Duff y is the most experi-enced newcomer on the roster.

“Duff y is a versatile, well-rounded player who has a high volleyball IQ,” Rooke said.

RIGHTSIDE HITTERErica Vrvilo is back

for a third season in Orange and

Black, after tallying 157

kills and 66 total blocks in her sopho-more cam-paign.

“Vrvilo is the strongest player on the team

who provides an intimidat-ing block on the outside,” Rooke said.

One returner that the coach-ing staff was impressed with a year ago is sophomore Anna Coursey. Coursey is a gifted lefty who uses her 6-2 frame to her advantage.

“Last year Coursey was the most improved player on the team,” Rooke said. “Her potential is unlimited.”

Look for Coursey to have an increased role in the off en-sive attack.

LIBERO/DEFENSIVE SPECIALIST

2009 marks a transition year for the Bears, who are play-ing for the fi rst time with-out in four seasons without second-team all-conference libero Claire Tucker. Sopho-more Ashley Skidmore is ex-pected to step into the role of defensive stopper.

“Skidmore is a true team player who does what is best at any cost,” said Rooke.

Claire Patten is a newcomer who will see time in the backcourt. According to Rooke, Patten is mentally tough and mature beyond her years.

Although Rooke’s 2009 team may lack the senior leader-ship that made 2008 so suc-cessful, the coaching staff believes the youthful talent on the roster will get the squad to Fort Myers, Fla. for a sixth consecutive chance to compete for a conference title.

Bears win ug. 30.

Head Coach Noelle Rooke enters her sixth season at the helm of the Mercer volleyball program. The native of Agoura, Calif., has increased the visibility of the program in her first five sea-sons with demanding non-conference schedules as well as five consecutive trips to the conference tournament, something no other Mercer head coach can claim in their first five seasons.

Last season, Rooke became the first volleyball coach in the school’s history to be named conference coach of the year.

Rooke earned the honor after guiding the Bears to an 18-10 (13-7 A-Sun) regular season record. The 2008 season featured the highest win total for the program in 14 years and top league win total in program history.

Under Rooke last year Mercer was one of the top defensive teams in the nation, finishing the season ranked 16th in digs per set. Senior libero Claire Tucker, who was honored as an all-conference second-team player, finished the season 8th in the nation in digs per set (5.41). On the offensive front, senior setter Kelly Jansen finished her career as the program’s all-time leader in assists (3,196).

Not only was Rooke’s squad effective on the court, they also excelled in the class-room. Nine members of the 2008 squad were named to the Atlantic Sun Honor Roll.

In 2007, sophomore Jen Darty broke the school sin-gle-season record for blocks

per game (1.14), and block assists (95) while her older sister, Julie Darty finished her career as the school’s all-time career leader in kills per game (3.18).

In 2006, under Rooke, the Bears made their marks in the record books. Jen Darty garnered A-Sun Freshman of the Year ac-colades, becoming the first Bear to earn the honor since Katie Plummer in 2001. Chelsea Gebben earned a spot in the NCAA record books, serving 22 consecutive points in a match against Savannah State. Mercer also set several records in the A-Sun, including the three-game kill (68) and assists (67) records in a match against UNC Asheville. In 2006 Bears also made an impact on the school record books, breaking six records in the

season and career books.

In 2005, the Bears got off to a rocky start as they dropped 15 of their first 20 matches including five straight losses to open conference play. Rooke rallied her young team and challenged them to play better down the stretch, and the Bears responded with six consecutive wins to close the regular season, including four straight in conference play. Mercer secured the No. 5 seed in the A-Sun Tourney, marking their third consecutive trip.

In her first season with the Bears, Rooke’s guided her new squad to a 13-16 record and the sixth seed at the conference tournament. Rooke coached Katie Plummer as she finished her career at Mercer and became the first Bear to record over 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in her career. Not only that, Rooke was responsible for moving Liz Kane to the libero position, which allowed her to rewrite the Mercer record books and go down as one of the best liberos in the program’s history.

Taking over a program and raising the bar is nothing new for Rooke. Prior to arriving at Mercer, she served as head coach for six seasons at two different schools where she experienced considerable success. In her first head coaching position, Rooke took over at South Carolina Aiken and went 64-42 in three sea-sons. While at USC Aiken, she coached two players who earned academic All-America honors.

Following her stint at USC Aiken, Rooke spent one season as an assistant coach at Rowan University before taking the helm of the Profs’ program. Once again, Rooke righted the ship and raised Rowan’s ex-pectations. In three seasons at Rowan she went 65-27 and led the Profs to the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in school history. Her 2002 team finished with a 27-9 record and claimed the New Jersey Athletic Conference title for just the fifth time in school history, earning Rooke Coach of the Year honors.

An impressive student-athlete in her own right, Rooke was a four-year letterwinner in volleyball, soccer and track in high school, earning first-team all-conference honors in all three sports her junior and senior years. She was also named MVP and team captain of the volleyball team during her senior year.

Following her stellar high school career, Rooke went on to star as a setter at Florida Southern. She was named team captain and MVP, as well as being named second-team all-conference her senior year.

Rooke earned her bachelors degree in sociology from Florida Southern in 1996, where she took her first coaching job as a graduate assistant. She resides in Macon and is married to former Mercer soccer standout, Max Rooke.

WHAT DISTINGUISHES A GOOD UNIVERSITY FROM A GREAT UNIVERSITYEXTENDS FAR BEYOND THE BOUNDARIES OF ITS CURRICULUM AND ITSCAMPUS.

THE COMPETENCE AND CHARACTER OF AN INSTITUTION’S GRADUATES ARE, MORE OFTEN THAN NOT, THE HALLMARKS BY WHICH ITS REPUTATION IS BOTH EARNED AND MEASURED.

AS A PRIVATE, CO-EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION, MERCER UNIVERSITY HAS EMERGED AS ONE OF THE PREMIER UNIVERSITIES IN THE SOUTHEAST AND THE NATION.

MERCER IS TRULY A DYNAMIC AND COMPREHENSIVE CENTER OF UN-DERGRADUATE, GRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION. MERCER’S OUTSTANDING FACULTY TAKE STUDENTS BEYOND THE RIGORS OF ACADEMIC PROGRAMS TO EXPLORE THE CHALLENGES OF REASON, RESPONSIBILITY,COMPASSION AND CHARACTER.

THROUGH LEARNING, LIVING AND LEADING, MERCER STUDENTS ARE PRE-PARED NOT ONLY TO CONFRONT, BUT ALSO TO EMBRACE THE CHALLENGESOF THEIR FUTURE.

UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF PROMINENT GEORGIA BAPTIST LEADER JESSE MERCER, MERCER UNIVERSITY WAS FOUNDED IN PENFIELD, GA., IN 1833 AND LATER MOVED TO MACON IN 1871. FROM ITS HUMBLE BEGINNINGS AS A SMALL LIBERAL ARTS COLLEGE, MERCER NOW OFFERS PROGRAMS IN 11 SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES.

CONVENIENTLY LOCATED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STATE, MACON SERVES AS THE EDUCATIONAL, MEDICAL, CULTURAL AND COMMERCIAL HUB OF CENTRAL GEORGIA. LOCATED JUST ONE HOUR FROM ATLANTA - ONE OF THE NATION’S MOST POPULAR INTERNATIONAL CITIES - AND TWO HOURS FROM THE ATLANTIC COAST, MACON IS EASILY ACCESSIBLE FROM TWO INTER-STATE HIGHWAYS - I-75 AND I-16.

CONSISTENTLY RANKED BY U.S. NEWS WORLD REPORT AND THE PRINC-ETON REVIEW AMONG THE NATION’S LEADING UNIVERSITIES, MERCER CONSIDERS ONE OF ITS STRENGTHS TO BE ITS SUPERIOR FACULTY, WHO “TEACH FROM THE HEART.” AT MERCER, STUDENTS BENEFIT FROM LEARN-ING EXPERIENCES GUIDED BY CARING FACULTY, NOT TEACHING ASSISTANTS FOUND AT MANY UNIVERSITIES AS IS THE CASE AT MANY UNIVERSITIES. THE HIGHER EDUCATION RESEARCH INSTITUTE AT UCLA RECENTLY NAMED MERCER AS A “HIGHLY SELECTIVE” UNIVERSITY, AND THE PRINCETON REVIEW HAS PLACED MERCER AMONG THE BEST 351 COLLEGES IN NORTH AMERICA.

THE UNIVERSITY IS COMPRISED OF THE COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS, EUGENE W. STETSON SCHOOL OF BUSINESS AND ECONOMICS, SCHOOL OF ENGI-NEERING, TIFT COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, WALTER F. GEORGE SCHOOL OF LAW, SCHOOL OF MEDICINE, SOUTHERN SCHOOL OF PHARMACY, JAMES AND CAROLYN MCAFEE SCHOOL OF THEOLOGY, GEORGIA BAPTIST COLLEGEOF NURSING, TOWNSEND SCHOOL OF MUSIC AND COLLEGE OF CONTINUINGAND PROFESSIONAL STUDIES. THE UNIVERSITY ALSO OPERATES THEMERCER UNIVERSITY PRESS IN MACON AND THE MERCER ENGINEERINGRESEARCH CENTER IN WARNER ROBINS.

MERCER’S ENROLLMENT IS NEARLY 7,500 STUDENTS. WHILE MANYSTUDENTS COME FROM THE SOUTHEAST, MORE THAN 38 STATES AND 30COUNTRIES ARE REPRESENTED AMONG THE STUDENT BODY. THE AVERAGE CLASS SIZE AT MERCER IS 25, WITH A STUDENT/FACULTY RATIO OF 15:1 - UNUSUALLY LOW FOR A MAJOR UNIVERSITY.

CAMPUS LIFEEVEN WITH ITS PICTURESQUE SETTING, THE SPIRIT OF MERCER IS NOTIN THE GRANDEUR OF ITS BUILDINGS, BUT IN THE GRACIOUSNESS OF ITSPEOPLE - A FRIENDLY, FAMILY-LIKE COMMUNITY OF FACULTY, STAFF AND STUDENTS WHO STRIVE FOR EXCELLENCE IN ALL THAT THEY DO.

THE UNIVERSITY OFFERS A WEALTH OF FASCINATING EXPERIENCES AND ACTIVITIES BOTH IN AND OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM. FROM ACADEMIC CLUBS AND HONOR SOCIETIES, TO PERFORMING ARTS AND SPECIAL INTER-EST GROUPS, TO 16 NATIONAL FRATERNITIES AND SORORITIES ON CAMPUS, STUDENTS CAN CHOOSE FROM MORE THAN 80 ON-CAMPUS ORGANIZA-TIONS TO DISCOVER NEW TALENTS AND INTERESTS AND TO GAIN IMPOR-TANT LEADERSHIP SKILLS THEY WILL NEED FOR LIFE AFTER COLLEGE.

RESIDENCE LIFETHE BENEFITS OF CAMPUS LIVING ARE NUMEROUS - THE DEVELOPMENTOF LIFE-LONG FRIENDSHIPS, A SENSE OF COMMUNITY, ENHANCING CAMPUS INVOLVEMENT AND HIGHER ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE.

FOR MANY NEW STUDENTS, THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THEY HAVE LIVED AWAY FROM HOME, AND THE COMMUNITY THAT DEVELOPS ON CAMPUS AND IN RESIDENCE HALLS BECOMES A SECOND FAMILY.

ALL FRESHMAN AND SOPHO-MORES (FIRST-YEAR AND/OR TRANSFER STUDENTS) ARE REQUIRED TO LIVE ON CAM-PUS, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF MARRIED STUDENTS, STUDENTS ABOVE THE AGE OF 21, STU-DENTS WITH CHILDREN AND/OR STUDENTS WHO LIVE AT HOME WITH A PARENT OR GUARDIAN WITHIN REASONABLE COMMUT-ING DISTANCE.

IN EACH OF MERCER’S RESI-DENCE HALLS, SAFETY COMES FIRST AND FOREMOST. THE EX-TERIOR DOORS ARE LOCKED AT ALL TIMES, AND STUDENTS USE THEIR IDENTIFICATION CARDS TO GAIN ACCESS INTO THEIR RESIDENCE HALL.
