Dr. GErry FrancisExecutive Vice PresidentElon University

Since becoming Elon University’s eighth president in January 1999, Leo M. Lambert has advanced an ambitious agenda to establish Elon as a top-ranked liberal arts university and a national model of engaged teaching and learning.

Under President Lambert’s leadership, Elon has accomplished broad improvements in academic and student life programs while continuing to develop a campus that consistently ranks among the nation’s most beautiful.

The academic climate of the campus has been strengthened through major investments in faculty development, library resources, honors and fellows programs for outstanding students, and Elon’s top-ranked programs in study abroad, undergraduate

research, volunteer service, and leadership education.

In 2001 Elon College became Elon University, and the NewCentury@Elon strategic plan was developed under President Lambert’s leadership. He directed the establishment of Elon College, the College of Arts and Sciences and both the School of Communications and the School of Education that same year. In 2006, Dr. Lambert led the drive to open the Elon University School of Law in downtown Greensboro, North Carolina.

New facilities constructed during President Lambert’s tenure include Carol Grotnes Belk Library, Rhodes Stadium, Belk Track and White Field, the six-building Academic Village, Ernest A. Koury Sr. Business Center, Ellington Health Center, The Oaks residence hall complex, Colonnades Dining Hall and the Colonnades residence halls, and several new residence halls and a commons building in Danieley Center. The university has expanded to include the 75-acre South Campus.

President Lambert has assumed a number of leadership roles regionally and nationally, serving on the national and North Carolina boards of Campus Compact and as a founding board member and president’s council chair of Project Pericles, a national organization that encourages students to become civically engaged in their communities.

As a result, Elon has twice been named one of the nation’s top universities for community service in the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

President Lambert has provided leadership on athletics issues, serving as a member of the NCAA Presidential Task Force on the Future of Division I Athletics and chairing the NCAA Committee on Athletics Certification.

In 2008 Dr. Lambert was appointed to the Commission on Effective Leadership by the American Council on Education and also to the North Carolina Higher Education Civic Education Study Commission. In 2009, he was named a director of the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), which comprises more than 1,150 public and private colleges and universities of every type and size.

Lambert has a bachelor’s degree from State University of New York at Geneseo, a master’s in education from the University of Vermont in Burlington, and a doctorate in education from Syracuse University. Prior to coming to Elon, he was provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse.

President Lambert’s greatest honor in life, in collaboration with his wife Laurie, has been the privilege of parenting two daughters, Callie, a student at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, and Mollie, a student at Furman University.

Dr. Gerald (Gerry) Francis assumed the role of Ex-ecutive Vice President of Elon University in 2009.

Francis received his undergraduate and gradu-ate degrees from Appalachian State University, where he was a member of the basketball team. He earned a doctorate in mathematics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech).

Francis came to Elon in 1974 as an assistant pro-fessor in the department of mathematics. During his tenure, he received the Daniels-Danieley Award as Elon’s most outstanding teacher. In 1983, he joined the administrative ranks as dean of academic af-fairs, and was later named vice president before assuming the role of provost in 1994.

During his years at Elon, the institution has dou-bled in size, increased quality among faculty and students and made substantial facilities improve-ments.

Francis is a native of Arlington, Va., and is mar-ried to Burlington native Laine Neese Francis. His daughter Kristen and her husband James McCar-thy are both Elon alums and have two children, Jay and Gerry, and reside in Elon.

Dave Blank begins his fourth year as the Elon University Director of Athletics for the 2009-10 campaign, following another year of notable improvement for the Phoenix in terms of athletic success, academic progress, marketing and fundraising. During his first three years at Elon, he ignited ambitious expansions in the Department of Athletics – including a restructuring of the Phoenix Club with emphasis on funding scholarships for student-athletes, a restructuring of the academic assistance program for athletics in conjunction with the Office of the Provost, and a plan for future facility improvements, including an already completed renovation of the Latham Park baseball facility, permanent bleachers for soccer, a state-of-the-art golf practice facility, and an in-progress field house at the North Athletics Complex.

In June 2008, Blank was appointed to serve on the NCAA Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet – a 31-member cabinet that will help shape the future of Division I athletics.

During the 2008-09 campaign, five Phoenix squads earned higher league finishes than they had in the previous year. The Phoenix captured regular-season Southern Conference titles in both men’s soccer and baseball with the baseball squad advancing to its third NCAA regional appearance in the past four seasons. The men’s tennis team fell just one win shy of a berth into NCAA play, but saw its first-ever individuals earn spots into the post-season tournament.

In 2007-08, 12 of Elon’s 16 sports programs finished higher in the Southern Conference than

the previous year. The Phoenix baseball team went on to claim SoCon outright regular-season and tournament crowns en route to a NCAA regional appearance.

Also, Elon fell just one victory shy of capturing the SoCon’s automatic NCAA postseason bid in football, men’s basketball and men’s tennis.During the 2006-07 season, Elon notched its first winning record in men’s soccer at the Division I level and posted SoCon outright regular-season and tournament titles and an NCAA postseason appearance in men’s tennis.

The Phoenix men’s soccer (2006), football (2007 and 2008), men’s tennis (2007, 2008 and 2009) and baseball (2008 and 2009) teams have all earned national rankings during Blank’s time at Elon.

Blank became the Elon Director of Athletics in 2006 after spending six years as the Director of Athletics at Drake University. At Drake, he directed an 18-sport NCAA Division I athletics program that competes in the Missouri Valley Conference. He was responsible for the creation of a comprehensive academic assistance program. During his tenure, Drake student-athletes consistently posted a combined grade point average of 3.0 or above. Also, Blank oversaw the addition of the women’s crew, women’s golf and women’s soccer programs at Drake.

Facility enhancements were a priority, including upgrades in the softball complex, renovation of the strength and conditioning facilities and new locker rooms for several sports. Under Blank’s guidance, Drake completed a $17 million renovation of Drake Stadium, which hosts football, soccer, and track and field events as well as the nationally known Drake Relays.

Blank has served as a member of the NCAA I-AA Governance and Football Issues Committees. In 2005, he received Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletics Director accolades from the All-American Football Foundation.

Prior to 2000, Blank worked at Coastal Carolina University where he served as Assistant/Associate Director of Athletics for three years (1996-99) and Director of Athletics for one year (1999-2000). While at Coastal Carolina, Blank spearheaded efforts to raise more than $4 million to establish an

Before moving into athletics administration, Blank spent eight seasons (1988-1996) as head men’s basketball coach at Lock Haven University. Blank’s teams won 119 games during his tenure, making him the winningest head men’s basketball coach in Lock Haven history. He was named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1989 and 1996.

A native of Frostburg, Md., Blank attended Duke University for two years (1978-1980) before graduating from the University of South Carolina in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration (Finance). He earned a Master of Science degree in Business Administration from South Carolina in 1986.

MIDDLE BLOCKERSJunior Sarah Schermerhorn and sophomore Caroline Lemke, a SoCon All-Freshman team member, will have some much welcomed help in the middle this season with freshman Celia Eddy joining the team. The Phoenix will also be able to mix up the lineup as Johnson and sophomore Traci Stewart can step into the middle blocker position to give the team different looks. The versatility of the blockers will provide several options for the setters.

RIGHT SIDE HITTERSSoCon All-Freshman team member Stewart gained valuable experience not only at the net, but also in passing at all six positions when she took over the right side last season. She finished the 2009 season with 326 kills, averaging 2.51 kills per game. With depth at other positions, the Phoenix will have the option of implementing a 6-2 offense with Wilson and Eddy competing for the starting spot.

OVERVIEWWith a balance of experience and youth, the 2009 Elon volleyball team looks to improve on its Division I-best 19-win season from a year ago. The roster features 15 student-athletes, including 10 hitters, several of which have the ability to play multiple positions. The back row returns the fewest players, but head coach Mary Tendler hopes that incoming freshmen Ali Deatsch and Melissa Zidar will adjust to the speed and intricacies of the college game quickly. How the pair progresses will be key to the success of the season. The team will rely on the confidence and leadership of the returners and the competitiveness of the freshmen throughout the season to earn a spot in the newly formatted four-team Southern Conference Championship.

DEFENSIVE SPECIALISTS/LIBEROSThe Phoenix will look to replace two back row players, including record-setting libero Kelley Blakewood, who were lost to graduation. Elon will rely on junior Lizzie West, the team’s second-leading returner in digs last season with 243, to provide leadership to newcomers Zidar and Deatsch who will have to adjust quickly to the college game to make this position a strength.

SETTERSSenior Emily Regan and sophomore Megan McMahon each have valuable experience and bring something different to the court at the setter position. Regan, who led the team in assists last season with 839, has the most experience with the returning hitters and a very effective jump float serve. McMahon, who tallied 370 assists as a freshman, is a well-rounded player who possesses good instincts on the court. Each has proven that they can win a big match and has the confidence of the team. The most consistent player will ultimately determine who will lead the team from the setter position.

OUTSIDE HITTERSElon welcomes back two starters in senior Mandy Wilson and junior Lauren Copenhagen as well as fifth-year senior Jessica Barrow to the outside this season. In addition to the returners, the Phoenix will

have two fresh faces on the outside with the addition of Allison Johnson and Carly Ledbetter, making it one of the deepest and strongest positions the Phoenix has had in several seasons. The depth will allow competition for starting positions and playing time on a daily basis.

SCHEDULEThe 2009 slate features matches against three teams that won conference championships a year ago and 16 Southern Conference matches, two fewer than in previous years. During the 13-match non-conference stretch, Elon will be able to experiment with lineups and give the newcomers experience that will be helpful during league play. Conference play will prove to be more intense than in years past, with just the top two teams in each division earning a spot in the SoCon Championship to compete for the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

WRAP UPThe returners are a confident and competitive group while the six freshmen have the skills to compete right way, with each bringing something different to the game. With its sights set on the Southern Conference tournament, the 2009 squad will work hard to achieve the goals set during the preseason.

MARY TENDLERHead CoachIllinois • ‘91Seventh Season

A former three-time first team All-American and professional volleyball player, Mary Tendler enters her seventh season at the helm of the Phoenix.

Tendler guided Elon to back-to-back winning seasons in 2007 and 2008, including a 19-win campaign in 2008 that marked the most wins by an Elon volleyball team since moving to the Division I level. The number eclipsed the 18-win plateau that was set in 2004 when the Phoenix went 18-14. During that season, Tendler’s second, the team finished with a 10-6 Southern Conference ledger for a second-place finish in the league’s North Division.

In Tendler’s first season, she guided the Phoenix to a 14-19 mark, five more wins than the previous year. She also led the team through its first year in the SoCon, posting a 7-11 slate in the conference in 2003.

For three seasons before joining the Elon staff, Tendler served as an assistant coach at James Madison University and helped lead the Dukes to a Colonial Athletic Association Tournament title and an NCAA Tournament appearance.

Tendler, who played at the University of Illinois as Mary Eggers from 1985-88, went to James Madison from Drake University where she was an assistant during the 1999 season on the staff of her husband, Blaine Tendler.

Prior to her time at Drake, Tendler spent five years as an assistant at Illinois State. During that span,

the Redbirds claimed a share of a Missouri Valley Conference regular-season title and earned bids to both the NCAA Tournament and the National Invitational Volleyball Championship Tournament.

Before her coaching career, Tendler spent a year-and-a-half playing with the USA Olympic team and spent two years playing professionally in Europe. She played for the Schwerte Volleyball Club in Germany in 1991 and the Francheville Volleyball Club in France in 1992.

A superior middle blocker during her playing days at Illinois, Tendler was named a three-time first team All-American as well as the 1989 Honda Broderick Award winner as the nation’s top volleyball player. A four-time first team All-Big Ten selection, Tendler was the league’s Freshman of the Year in 1985 and the Most Valuable Player in 1986, 1987 and 1988.

Tendler led the nation in hitting percentage in 1986 and 1988, setting an NCAA record with her .455 mark in 1986. Her .420 career hitting percentage stood as the NCAA record until 1993 and currently ranks third all-time. Tendler finished her career with 1,761 kills and only 326 errors on 3,417 attempts. She still ranks fourth in the NCAA in season hitting percentage and fifth for consecutive matches played with 151.

Tendler holds Fighting Illini career records in attack percentage, aces, blocks and kills. She was named the school’s Female Athlete of the Decade for the 1980s.

The Southern Conference, which began its 89th season of intercollegiate com-petition in 2009, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models.

Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradi-tion. Hundreds of Southern Conference student-athletes have been recognized on ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholar-ship winners have been selected from conference institutions. The conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and spon-sors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships.

Throughout history there is told the legend of the rare and remarkable Phoenix, a crimson and gold bird that lived 500 years. It was sleek, swift and strong - the most marvelous bird ever created by human imagination. At the end of its life, with death approaching, it built a nest in an oak tree and was consumed in flames ignited by the sun. From the ashes emerged the next Phoenix - reborn and renewed, with strength forged in fire.

Fire, too, has shaped the history of Elon University. The disastrous fire of 1923 all but destroyed Elon. Gone were Main Bulding, college records, classrooms, the library and the chapel. But within days of the fire, Elon trustees set in motion a plan for Elon to rise from the ashes, stronger than ever.

The Phoenix is a powerful leader and an emblem of immortality. It is a perfect symbol for a school that is constantly renewing and recreating itself.

The Elon motto, Numen Lumen, embraces the intellectual and spiritual light. And so too, through history, the Phoenix has served as a symbol of light and knowledge.

The Phoenix is timeless and unique. It perfectly describes an athletics program and an institution that are rising to new levels of excellence.

There is only one Phoenix. There is only one Elon. Catch the fire!

• The Elon University Athletic Department is proactive in ensuring the academic success of all student-athletes from their recruiting visit through graduation. Integral components of academic support for athletics include the academic enhancement program, registration services, tutorial services, travel notices, recruiting visits, laptops and life skills.

• All freshmen and select upperclassmen participate in the Academic Enhancement Program. All student-athletes in AEP meet with their assigned academic coordinator each week to discuss academic progress and concerns. In addition to weekly meetings, student-athletes in AEP are required to complete monitored study hours. To accommodate class and practice schedules, both daytime and nighttime options are available to complete monitored study hours.

• In addition to the academic support provided by Elon Athletics, programs are also in place to promote and enhance the student-athlete experience. Programs and speakers address topics such as freshman transition issues, health and wellness, and career/graduate school preparation. The Student-Athlete Advisory Council is an organization for student-athletes, run by student-athletes, to provide an opportunity to serve the athletic, Elon and greater Burlington communities.

• Elon University is a dynamic private comprehensive university known for excellent arts and sciences along with outstanding professional programs. The Education Trust recognizes Elon for excellence in freshman retention and outstanding graduation rates.

• Elon was named the nation’s #1 “School to Watch” by U.S. News & World Report in the magazine’s 2009 “America’s Best Colleges” guide. The 70 colleges and universities on the list are noted as “schools everyone should be watching.”

• U.S. News & World Report also ranks Elon #2 among 118 Southern master’s level universities and among the top universities in the nation in these “Programs to Look For” categories: first-year experiences, study abroad, internships, undergraduate research/creative projects, learning communities, service learning and senior capstone. No other school in the nation received so many top rankings.

• Elon cosistently earns top ratings in the annual National Survey of Student Engagement on each of the five benchmarks of excellence: - level of academic challenge - active and collaborative learning - student-faculty interaction - enriching educational experiences - supportive campus environment

• Elon offers 51 majors in four schools and has a total of 4,992 undergraduate and 636 graduate students. The average class size is 22 with an overall student to faculty ratio of 14 to 1.

• Elon offers a top value education by every measure: in 2009, both Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine and The Princeton Review named Elon one of the nations’s top 50 “best value” private universities. The 2009 edition of Fiske Guide to Colleges named Elon a “best buy” university, based on academic quality and reasonable cost.

• Elon is one of the nation’s top seven best values for students who want to attend a university with outstanding academics at an affordable cost, according to Bruce G. Hammond, former managing editor of the Fiske Guide to Colleges, in an article on Reader’s Digest.com

The Elon University Strength and Conditioning Program is based on hard work and competition. The belief being that athletes do not just become strong, but physically and mentally tough. Athletes must work hard each and every day to attain their goals, realizing that the team that works the hardest usually wins. So, the strength and conditioning coaches strive to instill the characteristics of a champion: dedication, sacri-fice and toughness. It is the job of the Elon strength and conditioning program to ensure that every time an athlete leaves a training session, he or she has become both physically and mentally tougher.

Each staff member is dedicated to every athlete. The main objectives are maximizing an athlete’s potential and preventing injury. Safety is a major concern and will never be sacrificed to lift more weight. Proper techniques for spotting and performing the lifts are taught before an athlete begins training. As athletes learn how to work harder and compete at a higher level, their team, the department and the university will become stronger and take one more step toward being champions.

Elly Shearman enters her second season on the Phoenix athletic training staff. She serves as the primary certified athletic trainer for the Elon volleyball and tennis squads.

The Summa Cum Laude graduate of the University of Tennesee at Martin earned her bachelor’s degree in health and human performance with a minor in psychology in 2005. She received a master’s degree in health and kinesiology with a concentration in sport psychology from Georgia Southern.

While at UT-Martin, Sherman served as a student athletic trainer for two football seasons and one softball campaign. She also worked one semester at the Vanderbilt Sports Medicine Clinic. While at Georgia Southern, Shearman worked one volleyball season and one women’s soccer season as a graduate assistant athletic trainer.

Shearman was a four-year member of UT-Martin’s Ohio Valley Conference champion women’s tennis team. She was named an Academic All-OVC athlete andwas an OVC Academic Medel of Honor recipient.
