Michal GiboneyAssistant Coach

Michal Giboney is in her sixth season as assistant vol-leyball coach at Harding University.

Prior to coming to Harding, Giboney started the volleyball program at Lubbock Cooper HS and coached there one season before moving to Lubbock Christian High School for two years.

Giboney played four seasons at Lubbock Christian University as a right-side hitter and setter. She held the career digs record at LCU and was named an Academic All-American. Giboney was honored by LCU last season as part of its 30th anniversary of the school’s volleyball program.

Giboney earned a bachelor’s degree from Lubbock Christian in 1994 and a master’s of education from Harding in 2001. She currently serves as a math instructor at Harding Academy.

Keith and Michal have two daughters, Emily (14) and Abbey (11).

Keith GiboneyHead Coach

Head volleyball coach Keith Giboney is entering his 11th season at Harding. He has a 266-96 overall record and has led the Lady Bisons to six consecutive Gulf South

Conference West Division titles and the 2003 overall GSC championship.

Harding has been to the postseason ten consecutive years and has also advanced to the NCAA II National Tournament four of the last seven seasons. In Giboney’s ten seasons as head coach, the Lady Bisons have finished in the top half of the conference.

Last season, Harding compiled a 24-9 overall record and finished 10-2 in the GSC West. Giboney has a 95-15 career record in GSC games and is 58-4 in the GSC West in the last five years.

Giboney is a graduate of Scottsdale Christian High School in Scottsdale, Arizona, and Lubbock Christian University in Lubbock, Texas. He completed his master’s degree in June of 1999 at Texas A&M University at Commerce.

His coaching career began in 1993 at Lubbock Christian High School, and in four years he produced three state champi-onships and a 110-25 record. Then in 1997, he moved to Dallas Christian, and in two years his teams went 60-18 and gave him a fourth state title. Giboney was twice a Texas All-Star coach.

Giboney joined Harding as head coach in 1999 and led Harding to a 26-11 record and a 9-3 finish in the Lone Star Conference. Harding joined the Gulf South Conference during the 2000-2001 school year.

[1983-2008] ::: 25 Years of Success

Head coach Karyl Bailey led the Lady Bisons from the in-augural team of 1983 until 1998. During that time, Bailey coached the team to a record 370 victories and five con-ference championships. He also coached during Harding’s transition from the NAIA to the NCAA Division II.

Although Harding had offered slow-pitch soft-ball and co-ed gymnastics in the late 1970s and early 1980s, volleyball was the first permanent

women’s intercollegiate sports on campus. From their first conference title to the six consecutive Gulf South Conference West championships, the Lady Bisons have rarely been absent from the top of the standings. Here’s a glance at the last 25 years:

6 Overall conference titles. Harding took five Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference titles (1989,

1990, 1991, 1993 and 1994) and won the Gulf South Conference Tournament in 2003.

Harding gives students the opportunity to attend study-abroad programs in Australia, Chile, England, France/Switzerland, Greece, Italy and Zambia.

Athletics plays a vital role in campus life, and Harding’s facilities are among the finest in the South. The Clifton L. Ganus Jr. Athletic Center, completed in 1976, serves as the hub of the athletics program. The 82,000-square-foot structure houses offices, classrooms, locker rooms, a 25-yard natatorium, a gymnastics room, a weight room, handball-racquetball courts and a 5,200-seat gymnasium with Pro-Turf surfacing and an indoor track.

Adjacent to the Athletic Center is the 6,000-capacity newly remodeled First Security Stadium, which is encircled by Ted Lloyd Track, a 400-meter, nine-lane latex track. Rhodes Field House (3,000) has been extensively remodeled and became the home for the intercollegiate basketball and volleyball teams in 1997.

Harding has been a full member of the NCAA Division II since 1997 and moved into the Gulf South Conference in 2000.

In the classroom...

...On the court

Rhodes Field House, an old World War II airplane hangar, has been home to the volleyball and basketball teams since the gymnasium was extensively remodeled in 1997. The Lady Bisons have benefit-ted from playing on the home court, finishing 9-3 at Rhodes last season. Harding has been 90-13 at home since joining the Gulf South Conference in 2000. Last season, Harding averaged 294 fans per game, good for 46th in NCAA Division II.

Senior Manuela Nesheva was named to the ESPN Academic All-District team for the first time in her collegiate career. In addi-tion to being an all-region outside hitter for the Lady Bisons, Nesheva finished the fall with a 3.73 GPA as a Management major.

3.42 Team grade-point average in 2007. For five of the last six years, the Lady Bisons have been given the

Gameplan/AVCA Team Academic Award.

14 Players have been named to the academic team since 2000.

10 Of the 15 players on the 2008 roster were named to the GSC Academic Honor Roll.

14 Players have been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team since 2000. Two of them, Ericka Pierson (2000)

and Katie Westmoreland (2006), were named Academic All-Americans.

T he Harding women’s volleyball team finished sec-ond in the Gulf South Conference West Division and went to their ninth consecutive GSC Tourna-

ment. Harding is 58-4 in the last five seasons in the West Division. Leading the way for the Lady Bisons was junior outside hitter Manuela Nesheva who averaged 4.59 kills per set and 2.63 digs per set. Nesheva ranked third in the NCAA and second in the GSC in kills per set. Nesheva also led the team in service aces, accumulating 40 on the season. Nesheva became the second player in Harding history to receive GSC West Division Player of the Year. Another driving force behind the team’s success was senior setter Leah Tepe, who ranked sixteenth na-tionally with 11.04 assists per set. Tepe earned All-GSC honors. Another All-GSC receipient was senior middle-blocker Shellie Rummer, who was second on the team in kills per set. Rummer also led the team in blocks averag-ing 0.58 per set. Sophomore Emily Tate led the Lady Bisons defense on the season averaging 4.05 digs per set ranking her fifth in the GSC. Harding head coach Keith Giboney hit a milestone in his career picking up his 100th GSC win over Southern Arkansas on Oct. 14. Harding carried a four-game winning streak head-ing into the conference tournament. The Lady Bisons defeated West Alabama in five sets but fell to host team West Florida in three sets. Fourteen of Harding’s 24 victories came in only three games. The Lady Bisons were only swept 3-0 twice.
