and her talent and experience should pay off for UAA for the next three years. Seven players comprise Green’s first full recruiting class, hailing from as close as Eagle River and as far away as Germany. Junior college transfer Lee Golden (5-8, OH, Pembroke Pines, Fla.) comes UAA’s way via Hillsborough Community College, where she played for a nationally ranked club. Six true freshmen – Marie Borowikow (6-3, OH, Eberswalde, Germany), Celestia Bowlus (6-1, MB, Chugiak), Shelby Hollister (5-10, OH, Bend, Ore.), Leah McWilliams (5-10, MB/S, Pecos, Texas), Jamie Russell (6-0, MB, Loomis, Calif.), and Nikkie Viotto (5-8, OH/DS, Eagle River) – will join the Seawolves’ new-look front line as well.

Meisner ranked sixth the GNAC with 4.52 digs per set, while posting 40 aces in 2008. The Nebraskan had 10 matches with 20 or more digs and ranked fifth on UAA’s single-season digs list. Sophomore outside hitter McKenzie Moss was not in the regular rotation as a true freshman, but the Anchorage native (Bartlett HS) made a big splash with clutch perfor-mances in a few matches, including late in a league victory over Central Washington. Another local player, former East High star Jackie Matthisen is finally eligible to help on UAA’s front row after sitting out a mandatory redshirt season. The trans-fer played her rookie season on Western Oregon’s NCAA Tournament team in 2007,

In his first season as Seawolf head coach, Chris Green’s club exceeded expectations

and posted multiple impressive victories. UAA’s winning record was its first since 2003, and a September triumph over No. 8 Augustana was the Seawolves’ first over a ranked team in 10 years. Picked to finish last in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference’s preseason volleyball coaches’ poll, UAA wound up three spots higher, just one match shy of fifth place. Now entering his second campaign, Green has the Seawolf program poised to take the next step, hoping to challenge for the postseason. A national championship coach at Western Nebraska Community College, Green knows what it takes to get there. “I think on a regular basis you need talented players, but also a consistent effort and a commitment to teamwork that is unsur-passed among your competitors,” Green said. “Each one of our returners has already shown that commitment, and I have great confi-dence in our newcomers.” Of course most success in volleyball starts at the setter position, where UAA returns a great one in senior Calli Scott, the reigning GNAC Newcomer of the Year. As a JC transfer last season, Scott averaged 10.67 assists per set (No. 2 GNAC) and earned Second Team All-GNAC honors. The Arizona native was also the MVP of the Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational as UAA captured the title of its own tourney. “Calli knows that this is her team and she is excited about taking the leadership role both on and off the court,” Green noted. “She should certainly be one of the best setters in the region, if not the nation.” UAA’s other four returning players all saw significant action last year, including All-GNAC honorable mention pick Cortney Lundberg. As an unproven sophomore in 2008, the 6-1 middle blocker ranked fifth in the GNAC with 0.93 blocks per set, and seventh in attack percentage at .290. The Montana native hit .500 or better nine times. Teaming for an experienced middle will be senior Ashley Bates, who posted 0.69 bps and hit .169 last year. “We should be solid in the middle,” Green said. “Cortney is an extremely hard hitter who strikes the ball at a very high point. Ashley learned a lot in her first year as a JC transfer and she was one of our most impres-sive players in spring ball.” UAA also has a proven defensive stop-per along the back row as full-time libero Stacie Meisner returns for her senior sea-son. A former player of Green’s at WNCC,

placed players at NCAA Div. I and II programs. WNCC’s players also found success in the classroom, with the team maintaining a cumu-lative 3.0 grade-point average in all nine of his seasons. The Gering, Neb., native also coached seven years at the prep level, including a 4-year stint at Kauai High School in Lihue, Hawaii. Green earned a bachelor of science in mathematics from the University of Nebraska in 1991, and received his master’s degree from the University of Wyoming in 1995.

CHRIS GREENHead Coach • 2nd Season

Chris Green made an immediate impact in his first year at the helm of the

Alaska Anchorage volleyball program in 2008, leading the Seawolves their first winning record since 2003 and tripling the team’s win total from the previous season. The Seawolves also captured the title of their own Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational and posted their first win over

a ranked team in almost a decade when they beat then-No. 8 Augustana. Under Green’s tutelage, outside hitter Rhea Cardwell became UAA’s first volleyball All-American, and setter Calli Scott became the first Seawolf to earn GNAC Newcomer of the Year acco-lades. Coming off four straight national semifinals appearances and the 2007 national title, Green made the jump from junior college to the NCAA Division II level in the spring of 2008. Before becoming the sixth coach UAA history, he spent the previ-ous nine seasons (1999-07) as the head coach at Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff, Neb. Green built a powerhouse program at WNCC, compiling a 453-55 record that culminated in the 2007 NJCAA Div. I national champion-ship. The Cougars finished in the top 10 at the national tournament in all of Greenís seasons, including a current string of four straight ‘Final 4’ appearances. In the last three seasons, WNCC went 163-7 and finished national runner-up in 2006. Under Green’s leadership, the Cougars earned a total of 10 first-team and six second-team All-America certificates and regularly

NICKY ROSEAssistant Coach • 10th Season

Nicky Rose enters her 10th season as an assistant coach with the Seawolves

in 2009. Her primary responsibilities include recruiting, match preparation and on-court instruction. Rose was a four-year letterwinner at Southwest

Texas State (1996-99), where she earned second team All-Southland Conference honors as a sophomore, junior and senior. She earned Southland Conference Tournament MVP honors as a senior, and was named to the all-tournament team as a junior. The career record-holder for digs at Southwest Texas, she also received the school’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award in 1998. Rose established herself on the local volleyball scene as a prep star at Anchorage’s Dimond High School.

THE GREAT NORTHWEST ATHLETIC CONFERENCE/SEAWOLF FACILITIES

SEAWOLF FACILITIES

The Seawolves host their

home matches on campus in the 1,250-seat Wells Fargo Sports Complex. The gym, which has housed Seawolf volleyball, basketball and gymnastics since 1978, pro-vides a comfortable atmosphere for both competitors and fans.

Seawolf volleyball players also make use of the WFSC’s other facili-ties — weight room, fitness center, 25-meter pool, jogging track and sauna — for training and recreation.

Stretching from Alaska to Oregon to Montana, the Great Northwest Athletic Conference has quickly established itself as one of the most

successful league in the NCAA Division II ranks. Founded in 2001 as a 10-team league, the GNAC currently features nine institutions – Alaska Anchorage, Alaska Fairbanks, Central Washington, Montana State Billings, Northwest Nazarene, Saint Martin’s, Seattle Pacific, Western Oregon and Western Washington.

In the last two years alone, the GNAC has produced one national team title (SPU women’s soccer, 2009), three national runner-up finishes, and three NCAA Final 4 placings (all by the Seawolf basketball teams). UAA sponsors seven of the GNAC’s 14 sports – volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.

DR. STEVE COBBDirector of Athletics – Univ. of Alaska Anchorage

In nine seasons at the helm of the University of Alaska Anchorage athletic department, Dr. Steve Cobb has helped take Seawolf Athletics to unprec-edented heights. Not only have the Seawolves excelled in the field of com-petition, but the foundation for future success has been set in several ways. The 2007-08 and 2008-09 campaigns were two of the most memorable in school history, highlighted by three Final Four appearances for Seawolf

basketball teams (women twice, men once), and NCAA top-15 finishes for men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s skiing, and men’s track & field. With UAA’s concurrent NCAA basketball runs in 2008, UAA became just the second school in Division II history to qualify both its men’s and women’s squads for the national semifinals. Under Dr. Cobb’s leadership, a planning phase is also under way for the construction of a new on-campus sports facility at UAA. He has also recently overseen several upgrades to UAA’s current facilities, including the installation of the new gym floor and the construction of the new All-American/Academic All-American honors wall. In 2005, Dr. Cobb helped establish the Seawolf Legacy Fund to provide a permanent endowment fund that will ensure full funding for future athletic scholarships at UAA. Seawolf Legacy surpassed the $1 million mark in donations in early 2008. Early in his tenure, he was the driving force behind the establishment of the Seawolf Hall of Fame and was instrumental in negotiating naming-rights agreements for the Wells Fargo Sports Complex, Kendall Classic hockey and Extended Stay Deluxe Invitational volleyball tournaments. The Alabama native has also overseen the creation of the Hockey Classic Wall of Champions above the Seawolves’ practice rink, as well as men’s and women’s Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout champions displays in the gymnasium. A former football coach, Dr. Cobb served as the athletic director at Georgia Southwestern State University before coming to UAA. In five years at Georgia Southwestern, Dr. Cobb raised the Hurricanes’ overall program to become one of the most successful in the nation, making the NAIA national playoffs in six of its seven sports and winning multiple conference champion-ships in men’s and women’s basketball, softball and volleyball. From 1992-95, Dr. Cobb was an assistant athletic director at Iowa Wesleyan College, where he served as the football team’s defensive coordinator and special teams coach. He also had stints as an assistant football coach at East Texas State University (1990-92) and Sul Ross State University (1988-90). A 1981 graduate of the University of Montevallo, Dr. Cobb also holds a Doctorate of Education degree from East Texas State as well as a Master of Business Administration degree from St. Ambrose University and a Master of Education degree from Sul Ross State. Dr. Cobb and his wife Sandra reside in East Anchorage.

Due to the warming effects of the Pacific Ocean currents and protection from the Chugach Mountains, Anchorage is located in Alaska’s so-called banana belt.
