SEASON OUTLOOKThe Saint Joseph’s men’s soccer team will field one of its

deepest squads in years in 2006, which should prove to be a keyfactor in helping the Hawks get back on the winning track.

SJU has an experienced group, and returns 10 starters fromlast season. More importantly, all 10 players who scored points in2005 are back for the Hawks.

“Our depth will be a pleasant problem to have this season. Itwill increase the level of competition with more players challeng-ing for playing time,” said SJU coach Tom Turner, who is now inhis 20th season and closing in on the school record for victories, needing nine to reach the mark. “Our ultimate goal will be to getback in the running for a spot in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.

Topping the list of returning players is last year’s leadingscorer Michael McInaw. McInaw had a stellar rookie season, beingthe lone Hawk to earn Philadelphia Soccer Seven All-Star honors. He tallied a team-best six goals on the year and SJU will be look-ing for him to duplicate or even increase those efforts in 2006.

Chris Powell, an assistant captain, will be another scoringthreat for the Hawks. He sat out 2005, but was SJU’s top scorerduring 2004 with three goals.

The Hawks are also looking for big things from junior mid-fielder Patrick Duddy, who stood out in the preseason training.Although Duddy went without a goal last year, he had two assists, and possesses the potential to be one of the team’s top scorersand playmakers. Craig Olsen, Tom Johnson and Andrew Tursi, who had four assists last season, will all contribute.

The defense looks to be the Hawks’ strength with a coregroup of veterans leading the way. The backfield will be anchoredby co-captain John Creed, Jim Slover, co-captain Joe Grayauskie

and assistant captain Dean Niedosik. Creed is making a comebackfrom an ACL injury which sidelined him for all but one game.Slover missed some time during 2006 with an injury but was stillthe team’s second leading scorer with five points.

Sophomore Joe Bodnar spent a year on the Hawks’ develop-mental squad, but will compete for the starting goalkeeper’s jobwith 6-3 sophomore Bryan Benedict. Junior Mike McBride addsdepth to that spot.

SJU will welcome back redshirt junior Andrew Takats, whomissed the entire 2005 season after suffering a severe fracture inhis leg in the middle of the 2004 season. After surgery and anextensive rehabilitation, Takats’ effectiveness remains to be seen, but his return will still be a boost to the Hawks.

Three scholastic standouts top the list of SJU newcomers.Jason Lewis was an All-State selection at Palmyra (NJ) HighSchool, and set the school record with 77 career goals. MatteoChiappini, an All-Area honoree from Great Valley High School, canhelp the Hawks in the midfield or attack. Travis Gast is a talenteddefender from Upper Dublin High School who could make animmediate impact.

Aside from a nine-game Atlantic 10 Conference schedule, theHawks will face local rivals Villanova, La Salle, Temple andPhiladelphia University in Philadelphia Soccer Seven play. TheHawks also have the advantage of two early home games as lastseason, Saint Joseph’s did not play its first home match untilOctober 22. In non-conference action, SJU will take on UMBC,Navy, Penn, Mt. St. Mary’s and Princeton.

Tom TurnerHead Coach20th Season

Tom Turner enters his 20th year as Saint Joseph’s head men’s soccer coach in 2006. Now one of thelongest tenured coaches at the University, Turner continues to lend a great deal of experience to theHawk program while he closes in on the school mark for victories.

Entering 2006, Turner needs just nine wins to surpass the school record of 120 career victories setby Jack Dunn from 1958 to 1975. In his 19 seasons thus far, he owns a 112-219-23 mark.

A rash of key injuries have plagued the Hawks in the past few years, but with the return of a num-ber of talented veterans and a group of skilled young players in the fold, Turner will look to return SaintJoseph’s to the Atlantic 10 Tournament in 2006.

Turner took over the Saint Joseph’s soccer program in 1987, and his rebuilding plan led the Hawksto back-to-back double-digit win seasons in 1993 and 1994. That success was reminiscent of his playingdays in the early 1970’s, when the Hawks made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

In 1993, Turner guided the Hawks to a school-record 12 wins and a first-ever Soccer Seven title andAtlantic 10 Tournament appearance. For his efforts, he was named the Coach of the Year in both theAtlantic 10 Conference and the Philadelphia Soccer Seven.

He followed that with a 10-7-2 record in 1994, marking the first consecutive double-digit win cam-paigns in the program’s history. The Hawks advanced to the Atlantic 10 Tournament, falling to NCAAsemifinalist Rutgers.

After a span of six seasons in whichthe team totaled 23 wins, Turner got theHawks back on track with 26 victories inthe next three seasons. That stretchincluded a 10-7-2 record in 2001, in whichhe earned his second Soccer SevenCoach of the Year Award.

A former defensive standout at SaintJoseph’s (1970 to 1973), he played on theschool's 1971 and 1972 NCAA teams.Turner took over the reins of the Hawksoccer program after a 10-year coachingstint at La Salle College High School(1977 to 1986), where he compiled arecord of 100-88-21. During that period,he also coached the Montgomery CountyAll-Stars in Pennsylvania's KeystoneGames scholastic competition whilecontinuing his playing career in theMajor Division of Philadelphia's UnitedSoccer League.

Turner has worked at La SalleCollege High School since 1981, and cur-rently serves as the assistant dean ofstudents and director of transportation, while also teaching social studies.

Turner resides in Churchville, PAwith his wife, Michelle, and their daugh-ters, Brigid, a 2005 graduate of SaintJoseph’s, and Mary Catherine.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flap-ping its wings for half a century, celebrating its gold-en anniversary in 2005-06.

One of the most famous mascots in collegesports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constantmotion by flapping its wings throughout every basket-ball game and representing the Saint Joseph’s motto,“The Hawk Will Never Die”.

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recog-nized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. At thattime, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contestamong the student body for a symbol. More than 100submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winningout over “Grenadiers” by a slim margin. The namewas appropriate because it typified “the fighting spiritof our crimson and gray athletes and it is suggestive ofthe aerial attack which has made our football teamfamous.” Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJUfollowing the 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous acco-lades in its 50-year history. It has been selected as the nation’s top mascot by TheSporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Street & Smith’sBasketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine.

THE HAWK

Laid out in a natural bowl in the centerof Saint Joseph’s campus, Finnesey Fieldhas been the home of Hawk men’s soccersince its inception in 1958.

Originally constructed for football andopened in 1929 with plans for an eventual70,000-seat stadium, the field has under-gone numerous changes over the years.

In 1960, both the original grandstandand hillside seating were eliminated for theconstruction of Villiger (now Post)Hall/Bluett Theater. That construction neces-sitated raising the field’s level some five feetabove its earlier location. In 1990 the facili-ty’s usage was greatly expanded with theinstallation of artificial turf. That expansioncontinued in 1994 when lights were added.During the summer of 2001, the fieldreceived a facelift when new turf wasinstalled. Bleachers were built into the hillclosest to Barbelin Hall during the summerof 2003.

In addition to the men’s soccer team,Finnesey Field is currently the home of SJUtrack and field, field hockey, women’s soccerand both men’s and women’s lacrosse.Previously, it played host to the football, baseball and softball teams.

SJU’s men’s soccer team has compileda record of 154-145-30 on the field since1958 The team played its first Finnesey Fieldgame on October 24, 1958, defeatingRutgers-South Jersey, 6-0.

In the first-ever night time event on thefield, the Hawks topped Lehigh, 3-0, onOctober 19, 1994.

2006 Men’s Soccer

Question marks surrounded the Saint Joseph’s men’s soccerteam entering the 2005 campaign. With freshmen and sophomoresmaking up nearly 75 percent of the roster, the Hawks went into theseason searching for an identity. Coach Tom Turner was forced tothrow many of these inexperienced players right into the mix, andwas pleasantly surprised at the outcome. Despite finishing the sea-son 2-14-1 and 0-9-0 in Atlantic 10 Conference play, the Hawksmade great strides during the season, with many of the youngerplayers gaining valuable experience along the way.

Goalkeeper Rob Lavorerio, one of only four seniors on theteam, provided leadership for the Hawks. After making only oneappearance in 2004, Lavorerio came off the bench and played wellthe opening game loss to William and Mary. Prior to the secondgame of the season against Binghamton he was awarded the startin goal, a spot he would not relinquish. He finished sixth amongAtlantic 10 goalkeepers with 72 saves, and earned his first careershutout in a victory over Philadelphia University.

Underclassmen sparked the Hawk offense, as eight out of 13goals were scored by freshmen. Six of those goals came courtesyof Michael McInaw. The standout forward netted his first two colle-giate goals in a 3-2 win over Adelphi, and was named the SoccerSeven Player of the Week the following week. He accounted for twoof three Hawk goals against Philadelphia University, scoring oneand assisting on another. McInaw’s stellar freshman year did not gounnoticed, as he was voted the team’s Most Valuable Player andwas named to the Soccer Seven All- Star team.

Fellow freshmen Nick Pozzessere and Andrew Tursi also madecontributions on offense. Pozzessere started every game at midfieldand scored his first career goal against Philadelphia University.Tursi, another regular in the starting lineup led the team in assistswith four. Midfielder Tom Johnson also had a fine rookie campaign,

recording one goal and starting 10 of 16 games. Sophomores Alex Koufacos and Jim Slover finished among the

team leaders on offense. Koufacos scored his first career goal whilerecording two assists on the year. Slover finished second on theteam in goals scored with two, despite only playing in 13 games.Cliff Jones picked up where he left off freshman year, puttingtogether a solid sophomore campaign. Junior captain JoeGrayauskie played tough defense throughout the year.

The Hawks opened the season by playing their first 12 gameson the road, including two against nationally ranked opponents. After a hard- fought loss to Long Island University in the openinggame of the Courtyard by Marriott Soccer Classic in Brooklyn, theHawks picked up their first win of the season in the tournament’ssecond game versus Adelphi.

The squad picked up their second victory of the season againstcity rival Philadelphia University. Koufacos netted the game-winner,as well as recording an assist. The Hawks finally played their firsthome game on October 22nd, nearly two months into the season.Johnson scored on an assist from Tursi late in the game to bringthe Hawks within a goal, but got no closer. The season ended witha slim 1-0 defeat at the hands of Xavier.

Things may not have gone the way the Hawks had hoped, butthe steady improvement over the course of the year has raisedexpectations for the coming season. After taking their lumps in2005, the Hawks are returning a more experienced, confident clubwho will look to make a run at the A-10 tournament.

Saint Joseph's anticipates taking pos-session of the property in 2008; the acquisition -- to be known as theMaguire Campus -- will provide unparalleled flexibility to enhance academ-ic programs and facilities.

Under Fr. Lannon's stewardship, the University vastly upgraded stu-dent housing and parking options with the opening of the City AvenueResidence Halls in August 2004. Phase II of that initiative is currentlyunderway and will result in additional parking and retail development along54th Street.

Lannon has also played a major role in boosting Saint Joseph'sacademic profile, an effort which includes recently endowed faculty chairsand student scholarships as well as the opening of the Pedro Arrupe Centerfor Business Ethics. A major curricular-review initiative and the hiring ofmore than 50 new full-time faculty over a five-year period will serve to fur-ther strengthen the University's academic position. SJU has alreadyequaled its best-ever U.S. News ranking (t-9th, Northeast) in the 2007"America's Best Colleges" edition.

Fr. Lannon has worked tirelessly to re-engage the University in its mis-sion and to foster expanded outreach efforts to alumni, governmental lead-ers, and other external constituencies. Saint Joseph’s University

THE UNIVERSITYFounded in 1851, Saint Joseph’s is an inde-

pendent, Catholic, Jesuit university teaching disci-plined reasoning, effective communication and alove of learning. From Willings Alley in Old CityPhiladelphia to Stiles Street in North Philadelphia toits current location on City Avenue, Saint Joseph’shas continued to grow and change with the times. The University combines the Jesuit tradition ofacademic excellence, a history of service and anideal campus location to produce successful stu-dents who seek to make a good world even better.

Full-time, undergraduate day enrollment isapproximately 4,250. Graduate, evening and exec-utive programs push total enrollment to more than7,400.

THE JESUIT TRADITIONOF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

Saint Joseph’s nationally recognized aca-demic reputation is confirmed by ongoingacknowledgment in Barron’s, U.S. News & WorldReport and Peterson’s. The Jesuit tradition of intel-lectual inquiry and personal concern manifestsitself in small, challenging classes taught by a car-ing faculty. Graduate assistants do not teach, soundergraduates can be sure they are receiving thevery best educational experience. One-on-oneinteraction between students and faculty is a reali-ty at Saint Joseph’s.

A solid liberal arts curriculum providesacross-the-board learning for every student.Supporting that curriculum are comprehensiveacademic majors and learning facilities. The resultis a broad education which prepares students notonly for employment and graduate school, but forlife itself.

In the fall of 1998, SJU opened the $25 mil-lion Owen A. Mandeville Hall, which houses theErivan K. Haub School of Business, the Center forFood Marketing and the region's first "Teletorium"and "Moot Boardrooms." An 87,000-square-footinternational academic center featuring state-of-the-art distance learning technology, it is locatednear the corner of 54th Street and City Avenue.

A HISTORY OF SERVICEThe students of Saint Joseph’s University are

dedicated to making today’s world even better. Anatural spirit of volunteerism has enabled theUniversity’s community service programs tobecome the most popular extracurricular activitieson campus. In addition, a Service Learning pro-gram allows students to receive academic creditfor their work outside the classroom.

SJU offers local, national and internationalopportunities for student service. From North

Philadelphia to Camden, N.J.; from Tijuana,Mexico, to the Appalachian Mountains, SaintJoseph’s students embrace the Jesuit mission ofserving those in need. The Thanksgiving DinnerDance for area senior citizens and the Hand-in-Hand Festival for the handicapped are two annualstudent-run events which draw thousands of spe-cial visitors to campus for fun and friendship.

IDEAL CAMPUS LOCATIONSJU’s City Avenue location combines the best

of dynamic Philadelphia with the suburban, resi-dential setting of the elegant Main Line. SaintJoseph’s 65 acres span two counties, allowing stu-dents literally to enjoy the best of both worlds. Thecity of Philadelphia, with its tremendous wealth ofhistorical, cultural, social and athletic attractions, iseasily accessible, while the safety, serenity andgreenery of a suburban campus are right at hand.

The friendly atmosphere and close-knit cam-pus ensure that students don’t get lost in either theliteral or the figurative sense at Saint Joseph’s.Expanded library, computer and athletic facilitiesadd a big-time “feel” to this growing university.

SUCCESSFUL STUDENTSMen and women leave Saint Joseph’s pre-

pared. The University boasts an excellent record ofplacing its graduates in first-time jobs, profession-al schools and other advanced degree programs.Part-time work and internships provide real-worldexperiences, the kind which delight future employ-ers. And with its many diverse student organiza-tions, SJU offers ample opportunities to assumeleadership positions.

An extensive on-campus recruitment pro-gram provides graduates with a head start in theiremployment search. Regular meetings with facul-ty advisors, along with advisory programs in thehealth professions and in pre-law, assist studentswho wish to further their schooling.

PHILADELPHIASJU’s Philadelphia location gives students

access to two worlds. The campus resembles apark, surrounded by the stately homes ofPhiladelphia’s historic Main Line suburbs. Yet stu-dents have access to the cultural, commercial andrecreational activities of downtown Philadelphia -only a short ride away.

SJU students take frequent advantage of theartistic and cultural resources Philadelphia offers,as well. They visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art;the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; theFranklin Institute Science Museum; the Academyof Music, which houses ballet and opera; and thenew Kimmel Center, home to the PhiladelphiaOrchestra. In addition, SJU students know theyalways have a good time rooting for Philadelphiaor other hometown teams in the four major pro-fessional sports.
