On June 9, 2011, Naval Academy Directorof Athletics Chet Gladchuk introduced RickSowell, a man who has been involved withrebuilding programs at Georgetown,Dartmouth, St. John's and Stony Brook, asthe Naval Academy's eighth head men'slacrosse coach in its 100-plus year storiedhistory.

Sowell compiled a 47-26 (.644) record in five seasons at Stony Brook and wasnamed the America East Coach of the Year in each of the last two seasons as heguided the Seawolves to back-to-back America East regular-season titles (2010-11).

Stony Brook finished the 2011 campaign with a 10-4 mark, including a 5-0 recordin conference play. The Seawolves just missed a second-consecutive trip to theNCAA Tournament when they lost in the America East Championship Game by agoal.

In 2010, Sowell led Stony Brook to the program's first America East regular-sea-son title, a school-record 13 wins, a national ranking as high as No. 6 and a 9-7 vic-tory over Denver in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The Seawolves werejust a game away from advancing to the school's first-ever final four, narrowly los-

ing in to Virginia in the quarterfinals, 10-9.Stony Brook had four players earn All-America honors, including Kevin Crowleywho was the school's first First-Team All-American and was named the USILA Playerof the Year.Sowell, who was an assistant coach for

the gold-medal winning Team USA at the2010 World Championships in England, ledStony Brook to a 9-6 record in 2009 and afinal ranking of No. 20 in the country. Itmarked the school's first end-of-the-seasonnational ranking. Stony Brook finished 4-1 inAmerica East and stood as the regular sea-son co-champions.Prior to Stony Brook, Sowell was tapped

to head the rebirth of the St. John's lacrosse program that had been dormant since1995. Sowell had just one season to recruit before the Red Storm took the field in2005.

Sowell was the head coach at Dartmouth from 1999-2003 and revived the Big

Green program, taking the team from last place in the Ivy League to first.In his final season at Dartmouth in 2003, Sowell's squad posted an 11-3 record

and won the Ivy League with a 5-1 record. It was Dartmouth's first Ivy League titlesince 1965 and just the third Ivy League title in school history.

During the title run, the Big Green upset No. 2 Princeton marking the first timethat Dartmouth had won at Princeton since 1958. Sowell was also named theNEILA Coach of the Year that season.

Sowell served as an assistant at Georgetown from 1990-98 where the Hoyasgrew from an also-ran to a national contender. In 1998, the Hoyas finished 10-5overall and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA's.

Sowell's coaching career began at Washington College in Chestertown, Md.,where he helped guide the Shoremen to the NCAA Division III national title gamein 1986 and the semifinal round in 1987.

Before dedicating his life to coaching, Sowell played lacrosse at all levels. Hebegan his college career in 1982 at the State University of New York before trans-ferring to Washington College prior to the 1984 season.

At Washington College, Sowell was named the 1985 Division III NationalMidfielder of the Year and was also a two-time All-American. He helped leadWashington College to the Division III national championship game twice. InSowell's senior campaign he was team captain and earned the Dr. Charles B. ClarkMVP Award.

His 45 goals and 14 assists earned him Division III First-Team All-America hon-ors and an invitation to participate in the annual North-South All-Star Game.

Sowell spent five years with the Baltimore Thunder of the Major Indoor Lacrosse

League (MILL), where he was a first-team all-pro selection three times.Sowell graduated from Washington College in 1986 with a bachelor's degree in

history. He was inducted into the Washington College Hall of Fame in 2000.Sowell, and his wife, Catherine, have two daughters, Kennady and Avery.

First Year at NavyASSISTANT COACH RYAN WELLNER

Ryan Wellner joined the Navy staff in the summer of 2011 after a three-year stint alongside Sowell at Stony Brook where he primarily workedwith the defense and the Seawolves’ faceoff game. In his three seasonsat Stony Brook, the Seawolves produced a 32-14 record (.696), includ-ing an impressive 15-1 mark in America East action. The Seawolvescaptured the America East regular-season title in 2010 behind a 13-4record and punched their ticket to what was only the program’s secondNCAA Tournament appearance (2002) by way of defeating Albany, 11-7, in the America East Championship Game.After dropping a 14-8 decision to UMBC in what was the first AmericaEast contest of 2009, Stony Brook has won 15-consecutive regular-sea-son America East contests.

Wellner helped develop long stick midfielder Steven Waldeck into athree-time America East selection as well as 2009 Honorable Mention All-American. Waldeck finished hiscareer with a school-record 112 ground balls and was ranked fifth nationally in ground balls per game, aver-aging 6.59. Additionally, he was the nation's leading scorer among all long poles in 2009. Waldeck also wasdrafted by the MLL's Toronto Nationals and the NLL's Minnesota Swarm.

Meanwhile, Wellner was instrumental in improving the Seawolves’ faceoff game, as Adam Rand evolvedinto one the country's premier draw specialists. In 2010, Rand won 61.6 percent (266-432) of the faceoffs hetook 266-432, the third-best percentage in country, while his 432 attempts went down in the record books asan NCAA record. He won 29 draws against Siena on Feb. 20, 2010, which are the second-most wins by anindividual in NCAA history, before taking 28 faceoff wins at Binghamton on April 17, 2010, the NCAA’s thirdmost victories. In 2011, Rand owned the nation’s 11th-best faceoff percentage, boasting a 60.1 percentage(187-311). Meanwhile, he was sixth nationally in ground balls per game, scooping up 6.86 per contest.

Prior to his arrival at Stony Brook in 2009, Wellner spent the 2008 campaign as the men's assistant coachand defensive coordinator at Washington & Lee University in Virginia, helping lead the Generals to a 9-6record. He also served as the defensive coordinator for three seasons at the Stevens Institute of Technologyin New Jersey where he helped guide the Ducks to a pair of NCAA Tournament berths. Wellner's defensiveunits produced a pair of All-America defensemen and ranked among the Div. III top 10 in scoring defense.

A 2000 graduate of Mary Washington College with a bachelor of science in business management,Wellner also served as an assistant coach at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (2004) and ChaminadeHigh School (2003). Additionally, he was the Director of the New York Lacrosse Academy and served as theDirector of Operations for the National Lacrosse League from 2001-2003.

A four-year letterwinner at Mary Washington, he served as captain of the lacrosse team his senior year and earned the school's Outstanding Senior Award in 2000.

After spending the 2011 season at the Senior Assistant Coach/OffensiveCoordinator at Washington College, J.L. Reppert returns to his almamater. Reppert was a four-year starter at attack for the Navy lacrosseteam from 1996-99, helping lead the Mids to an NCAA Tournamentberth in 1999. He was bestowed one of the finest honors a Navy stu-dent-athlete can achieve, being voted by his peers to serve as teamcaptain in his senior year. He was also the recipient of the Vice Adm.E.C. Waller Award presented to a Navy lacrosse player for spirit, moraleand dedication to the program.

Reppert graduated from the Academy with honors in 1999, earninga bachelor of science degree in political science, and was commis-sioned a second lieutenant in the Marine Corps. He went on to gradu-ate from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., in 2004,

earning his M.B.A in finance and was a Conrad Scholar. From 2000-03, Reppert was stationed at MarineCorps Air Station Miramar as a finance officer. He was promoted to Captain in 2004 and began working inthe Programs and Resources Department at Headquarters Marine Corps as a Congressional Liaison. Afterserving nine years in the Marine Corps and achieving the rank of Captain, Reppert left the corps to begin hiscoaching career.

Along the way, Reppert has held high school assistant coaching jobs at St. Albans (D.C.), Episcopal (Va.),Gonzaga (D.C.), Robert Louis Stevenson (Calif.) and Poway (Calif.). He has also served as the manager ofChampions Field House in Rockville, Md., and as founder and partner in Breakout Lacrosse Company, basedin Washington, D.C.

Reppert, who resides in Alexandria, Va. with his wife, Jill, and son, Liam, earned his first college coach-ing job in 2009 at Harvard where he served under former Navy assistant coach and current Maryland headcoach John Tillman. While at Harvard, his responsibilities included developing and maintaining the team'sbudget, serving as director of operations, managing Crimson Lacrosse Camps and assisting in the develop-ment of the team's offense.

One of the most decorated players in Navy lacrosse history, MickeyJarboe joined the Navy staff as the volunteer assistant in the summer of2011. He is one of only 13 players nationwide to win the Ens. C.Markland Kelly Award, presented to the nation’s top goalkeeper, multi-ple times. Jarboe received the award in 1999 when he guided the Midsto their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1994 and a year laterwas presented the award a second time. He is one of seven goalkeep-ers in program history to earn the award and joins Dennis Wedekind asNavy’s only two-time Kelly Award winners.

A two-time First-Team All-American, Jarboe was the 2000 recipientof the Naval Academy Sword for Men which is presented annually tothat midshipman of the graduating class to have personally excelled inathletics during his years of varsity competition. A native of Towson,

Md., Jarboe concluded his college career as Navy’s career saves leader with 701 stops and ranks No. 2 insingle-season saves, recording 215 in 1999. He is one of only three players in program history to make 200-plus saves in a single season.

Jarboe graduated from the Naval Academy in May of 2000 with a bachelor of science degree in politicalscience. He was commissioned an ensign in the United States Navy where he would spend the next nine-and-a-half years as a helicopter pilot. A Lt. Cmdr. select, Jarboe spent his last duty command in San Diego,Calif. where he was a helicopter instructor before leaving the Navy in March of 2010.

While committed to his responsibilities as a helicopter pilot in the Navy, he also took advantage of a oncein a lifetime opportunity of playing professional lacrosse. Jarboe was acquired by the now defunct LosAngeles Riptide in 2007 and alongside former Navy midfielder Graham Gill, was named a Major LeagueLacrosse All-Star. A year later, he was named the Warrior Goalkeeper of the Year and an MLL All-Star for asecond-straight year as he led the Riptide to Championship Weekend for a second-consecutive season.

The Riptide showed particular allegiance to the Naval Academy, as the 2007 team fielded seven formerNavy lacrosse players. Joining Jarboe were Gill (‘05), Sean Donnelly (‘92), Mitch Hendler (‘05), ChrisPieczonka (‘05), Matt Russell (‘06) and Jon Birsner (‘06).

Jarboe, who now resides in Annapolis with his wife Katie, is currently employed by SpineWave, a com-pany committed to the development and delivery of high-quality innovative medical devices for the treatmentof spinal disorders.

First Year at NavyVOL. ASSISTANT COACH MICKEY JARBOE

In his 11th season, Mark Goers assumes the position of Director of Physical Education Operations, following a two-year stint asthe program’s volunteer assistant coach.

Goers came to the Academy in 2002 as an assistant coach, but in 2006 transitioned into the Mids’ Director of LacrosseOperations. In that role, he oversaw Navy’s travel, facilities scheduling, camps and clinics, as well as other administrative dutiesincluding budget, compliance items and film.

As an assistant coach from 2002-05, Goers molded the Mids into one of the most successful faceoff squads in the country. In2004, Chris Pieczonka was ranked No. 2 nationally in faceoffs, winning 67.6 percent (173 of 256) of his draws and led Navy as ateam to a tie for No. 2 in the national rankings, winning 65.5 percent (268 of 409). By virtue of his ability to face off, Pieczonka wasranked 10th nationally in ground balls, scooping up 5.81 per contest.

Another player Goers is credited in refining is two-time All-American Steve Looney.The middle of three lacrosse playing brothers, Steve was the workhorse of Navy lacrosse during his four-year career. A multi-facetedplayer, he saw time as a face-off specialist, a wing player on face-offs, a defensive midfielder and an offensive midfielder. Looney,the 2004 Patriot League Tournament MVP, surfaced with the ball in 2004 and ‘05 in nearly every ground ball opportunity.

Goers came to the Naval Academy after a three-year stint at Ohio State where he oversaw the Buckeyes’ offense and face-off strategy.A 1995 graduate of Towson, Goers is regarded as one of the premier players in Tiger history. A 1994 Third-Team All-America, he held Towson records in face-offs won

in a game (21 vs. Villanova in ‘94), ground balls in a season (127 in ‘94) and ground balls in a career (274, 1993-95) until 2004 when Justin Berry edged out Goers inthose categories. Meanwhile, his 78.8 face-off winning percentage is the best single-season winning percentage in NCAA history.

Upon graduation, he began his coaching career in 1996 as an assistant coach at his alma mater where he helped lead the Tigers to the quarterfinals of the ‘96 NCAATournament.

In 1998, he returned home and assisted his former high school coach Earl Brewer at Langely High School in his home state Virginia, and helped to direct the prepteam to the state regional finals.

Just a year later, he joined the Ohio State program that was beginning to flourish. In 2000, Goers helped develop face-off specialist Anthony Kelly to a .540 percent-age — the nation’s 27th-best mark.

The Fairfax, Va., native has competed for the Columbus Landsharks of the NLL and was an all-club team member for Team Toyota.Mark and his wife, the former Jessica Anna Christina duHoffmann, were married Dec. 7, 2001, and reside in Kent Island with their son, William, and daughter, Juliette.

Goers is an instructor within the Academy’s Physical Education Department.Goers comes from an athletic family. His mother, a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan, holds multiple indoor track records, his father played basketball at Wittenberg and his

brother, Matt, played lacrosse at Ohio State and was the team captain his senior campaign.
