SUMMARY RESUMEConsensus on various topics of medical science are beco-ming co mmon place at the end of the XX h century, espe-cially in areas of medicine where controversies exist or inwhich improvements are required to decrease the preva-lence a nd /o r severity of a disease. It is therefore evidentthat an agreement had to be reached to reduce the preva-lence, an d morbidity of rhinitis, a co mmon disease impai-ring quality-of-life. Two major gu ideli nes have bee n pub li-shed co nce rnin g the m ana gem ent of allergic rhinitis : theinternati onal consensus report on the diagnosis andmanag ement of rhinitis and the WHO position paper onallergen immunotherapy intitled therapeutic vaccines forallergic diseases. The objectives of the treatment of aller-gic diseases are [1] the red uct ion of symptoms due toallergen exposure. Allergen avoidance appears to be amajor part of the tre atmen t of the disease [2], the improv-me nt o f quality-of-life of patients [3], if possible alterat ionof the natural course of the disease although there is nodata showing that any treatmen t may have such properties[4], avoidance of side effects induced by drugs, and [5]educat ion of patients to improve the unde rsta ndin g of thedisease and the complianc e to treatment. These goals maybe achieved usi ng aller gen avoida nce which is always indi-cated, pharmacotherapy which is now safe and effectiveand alle rgen immuno ther apy which may after the naturalcourse of the disease and improves the control symptoms.
