The European Legends Programme, funded by Erasmus+ Sport is a football-based health programme that kicked off in November 2015 and runs for a period of two years.

13 EFDN Network member clubs from 7 different countries work in collaboration on developing and delivering a “Walking Football” community programme for a specifically challenging target group to reach.

The European Legends programme follows the mission of increasing the participation in sport, physical activity and voluntary activity for people aged 50 years and older. The purpose of the programme is

to raise awareness about the powerful role that sport can play in promoting health, enhancing physical activity, social inclusion and equal opportunities.

European Legends- A Pan European Project powered by EFDNThe 13 EFDN network member clubs, Feyenoord Rotterdam, Fulham FC, Tottenham Hotspur, NEC Nijmegen, Vitesse Arnhem, KAA Gent, Club Brugge, Vålerenga Fotball, VFL Wolfsburg, PSV Eindhoven, SV Werder Bremen, Anorthosis Famagusta and SL Benfica along with EFDN are promoting the Walking Football & Walking Sports methodology in seven different countries across Europe.

To achieve this goal, representatives of the European Legends Programme have been attending international seminars throughout the programme at PSV Eindhoven Netherlands, Fulham FC London, Anorthosis Famagusta Cyprus and SL Benfi ca Lisbon.

A collaborative Walking Football Practitioners Guide has been developed which can additionally be applied to other sporting formats in local communities across Europe.

From 18th to 20th of September the values of the programme will truly come to life at the European Legends Walking Football Festival. It presents a unique opportunity for all clubs to gather along with other walking football clubs and groups.

Additionally, the European Legends Festival and with it the Walking Football Conference provides an opportunity for all participating clubs to come together along with local authorities, stakeholders and sponsors to aknowledge the sustainable avenues which continue to inspire the work which is being done across Europe.

Vålerenga Walking Football Team I

Vålerenga Fotball started the Vålerenga Walking Football team in May 2016. The project is part of the EFDN European Legends programme and aims to promote a new sport based methodology to get people of 50 years and older physically active again. The Walking Football and Walking Sports methodology is the biggest innovative aspect of the European Legends project. Walking Football is a variation of football in which players may not run. It’s not allowed to slide,

have physical contact and play the ball above waist. These rules shall prevent injuries. The Walking Football programme the elderly in Vålerenga Football is offered once a week – on Tuesdays – for 2 hours. After every practice, it is time for a bit of social interaction with coffee/fruit/cookies and cake.

During summertime, we practice outside and throughout the winter period inside. At the beginning of the programme, Vålerenga Football started off with 8 players. Currently, we are a group of 15 players, all being above 60 years old. Until now, we have played one small tournament and a number of matches against the team of Vålerenga Football’s Drug Addict community programme.

At this point, there is not yet another Walking Football team in Norway.

“The Vålerenga Walking Football team is very excited to finally play some matches and to participate in a tournament/festival. We have no other Walking Football teams in Norway and it has been difficult to arrange many matches for the players. Therefore, we have been practicing every Tuesdays but only played one small tournament and two practice matches against the team from Vålerenga’s drug addict community programme.”

“For us it is very exciting to meet other players from the same age group, in a big tournament with 24 other Walking Football teams from all across Europe.”

“It is great to still get to practice and play the game I love, at my age. I have not played football in over 25 years, this is fantastic and to share this experience with my teammates is great.”

One of the amateur clubs that is participating in the NAC Oldstars Walking Football project is V.V. Baronie from Breda. The club started in September 2016, and has grown since then to a squad with 18 players. The team is being coachedby trainer Jari van Aard.

“Having participated in several tournaments, the NAC

OldStars/Baronie squad is looking forward to participating

in this international tournament. It is a nice moment to see

THE progress the team has made in their first year.

The Walking Football programme at Fundação Benfi ca is achieving its goals. We were able to get a very consistent and enthusiastic group of participants within our social partners. Now, we are a group of nearly 50 people, including several female participants and its most emblematic athlete of 93 years old, who doesn’t skip her training. We give our training sessions on a pitch at the stadium facilities of SL Benfi ca in Lisbon on Tuesday and Thursday mornings.

At the festival, we will be attending witha mixed group, including some female participants. Our team has been formed considering the commitment of the participants revealed throughout the sessions of the project. Therefore, this decision was not specifi cally based on their ability to play this sport, which is new in our country. We expect to make a positive contribution to spread Walking Football in Portugal.

We see it as a remarkable way to engage seniors in sports activities and have a strong impact in the fi eld of active ageing.

– Clementina (participant) –

“As for the fact of participating inthe project, I don’t like it - I love it.I’m just sorry that I don’t know how to play a little bit better. As for the trip,I’m worried because I think I don’t play well enough yet. I’m going to love going abroad to meet new people and new countries. Going to the stadium every week has become one of my favourite habits, I love the people who are helping us and who have provided us with this experience.

My grandchildren still don’ t believe that the grandmother plays at Benfica. I love the reaction of the people when I’m leaving to the Stadium to another training fully equipped.”

– Carlos (coach) –

“The project has immense benefits in termsof physical health, but for us it is much more than that! The biggest benefit is theconviviality and friendship created among the participants that lead to a happier week for everyone! Concerning the Festival it’s a unique opportunity to get to know different cultures, especially considering thatthe participants never thought about participating in sports competitions abroad!”

“After the first weeks of training the Bayer 04 Leverkusen Walking Football team is looking forward to prove their abilities in a competition.”

“We only had a few training sessions, however the walking football fever caught us a lot. It is very attractive for us to have the chance of playing against walking football teams from all over Europe. Hopefully we can learn a lot during the upcoming days and extend our knowledge as well as our enthusiasm about walking football.”

“Furthermore we are very excited about meeting walking football players from so many different European countries. Talking to them and creating new friendships across the continent is an opportunity we are really looking forward to.”

“Becoming a part of the European walking football family fills us with pride and happiness.”

The team consists of regular Bayer 04 Leverkusen Fans and of members from the Bayer 04 Leverkusen traditional team. The opportunity of playing with some of their childhood idols attracts many fans from Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Additionally, the former players enjoy talking about old clashes like the Bundesliga promotion in 1979. This combination creates a very special atmosphere around the whole walking football team.

Founder Florian Wolfrum summarizes: “Although I am the Coach, I am far younger than the players. Nonetheless the team integrated me very nicely and friendly. I am very proud regarding our development in the past weeks. We have many players during our training sessions and the great atmosphere already resulted in some friendships. Moreover we made a huge effort to establish walking football alongside the river rhine.”

This walking football team brings people from 55+ from Nieuw Gent together. The team focuses on the walking football players, but also on supporters and volunteers. They try to bring people together because the social aspect is more important than the sportive perspective. The participants do sports, receive training sessions from qualified trainers, but most importantly, they get together before, during and after the training sessions, to help each other and make new friends.

Their philosophy and slogan is ‘Winnen doen we samen, verliezen doen we samen, komaan Blue-White’ – ‘We win together, we lose together, come ‘on Blue-White’.
