Please note that there is no bring day next week. Students will wear formal uniform next Friday (August 24) for the Opening and Blessing of our new facilities constructed through the Federal Government’s “Building Education Revolution” funding program. Book Week and Pyjama Day Next week we will celebrate book week. The theme for book week is “Champions Read”. Even though we have recently been focussing on our Olympic Champions, there are many other areas of life in which people excel. On Monday children are invited to wear pyjamas to school to launch our book week celebrations. As mentioned in last week’s newsletter we ask that parents play a role in ‘monitoring’ the appropriateness of pyjamas for wearing to school. Please err on the side of conservative coverage. It has been suggested that it would be appropriate to wear boxers and the like over tracksuit pants. Dressing gowns would be a good means of ensuring appropriate coverage. Pyjama day is purely a fun way for us to recognise book week. A gold coin is not needed for this event. FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL ADMINISTRATION WALK TO SCHOOL FRIDAY!! Thank you for your continued support of our Active School Travel program. Meet us at Turner Park (for Thuruna St Campus) and Remick St/Detling St (for Early Years Campus) at 8:05am this Friday.

THINKING SKILLS and BELONGING RULES Students develop capability in critical and creative thinking as they learn to generate and evaluate knowledge, clarify concepts and ideas, seek possibilities, consider alternatives and solve problems. The ‘Thinking Hats’ provide a concrete way in which to promote different types of thinking in our students. This week we continued with Value of Self, Others and the Environment. The Belonging Rules associated were “Co – operate with all staff and Value property, environment and special places and events”. This belonging rule was particularly relevant this week with the many special events occurring across both of our campuses. It will also be relevant next week as we celebrate the opening and blessing of our new facilities at Thuruna St. Blue Hat thinking assists us by asking ‘what do we need to think about to show that we value ourselves, others and the environment?’ This type of thinking possesses organisational and process based capabilities. Next week, we revisit the white hat and its connection with learning all we can and respecting other students’ learning. The white hat looks at the facts related to following this belonging rule.

CHOIR COMPETITION Tomorrow, Friday 17th August, 80 of our students participating in the Junior and Senior Choirs will attend the Queensland Catholic Music Festival at Coorparoo. This is a competition both choirs have been preparing for over this term. Thank you to Mrs Allely and Miss Morschel for their efforts. The senior choir will leave at 7:00am from Thuruna St accompanied by Mrs Allely and Miss Morschel. Miss Harvey and I will leave with the junior choir at 8:45am from Thuruna St. All choir students need to wear their full formal school uniform, bring their school hat and lunch. Both choirs will return by 1:00pm on Friday.

AUSTRALIAN GIRLS CHOIR VISIT Representatives from the Australian Girls Choir will visit on Friday 24th August at 2:30pm. During this time, the representatives will run a 30 minute workshop for interested girls from Year 3-6. A flyer came home to girls in these year levels last week. Please note the change of date to next Friday. If you wish your daughter to participate in this workshop please return the permission slip at the bottom of the flyer to the office before next Friday.

WOOLWORTHS EARN & LEARN and COLES SPORTS VOUCHERS Thank you for your support in collecting stickers/sports vouchers for our school. Both activities have now finished. We have collected thousands of stickers and sports vouchers. We look forward to the wonderful resources this will provide for our school. We shall let you know when points have been finalised. Thank you again for your generous support.

SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS Envelopes for school photographs have been sent home today. Every child needs to return their envelope with payment (NO CASH). Photos will be taken at Thuruna Street on Monday, 3 September and at Chuter Street on Fri-day, 7 September. Family photos will be taken at Thuruna Street for Thuruna Street families on Monday at 10.40 and those families who have students at both campuses will need to have family photos taken at Chuter Street on Friday at 8.00am. FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Congratulations to the Year 4 teachers for organising such a wonderful Grandparents Day on Tuesday. I am sure that all those who were able to come had a wonderful day. We started with a very meaningful Liturgy of the Word in the church led by Fr Denis where we acknowledged the gift that our grandparents are to their children and grandchildren in so many ways; passing on the

family history and rituals such as birthdays and picnics, sharing the responsibility of caring for and raising children and for being a light to guide the way (This light was the theme of the gospel read at church that morning). The children entertained their grandparents with a wonderful concert and sharing of their school

work and project . The High Tea organised by the parents was something to behold – thank you all

for all the effort you put into making this a special time for our precious grandparents.

PAULS COLLECT-A-CAP Dear parents and children - we have another great and easy way to raise funds for our school community – Pauls’ Collect a Cap. Any Paul’s Milk cap with 10c on it is able to be collected. Something for nothing! So start saving these lids instead of throwing them away. There will be a collection box at both campuses.

The money raised will go half towards resources at both campuses ( I will get the children to vote for what they would like to buy – within reason! ) and half towards supporting Catholic Missions.

QCMF Here is some important information pertaining to the Choir performance on Friday, 17 August: Get there early: To avoid missing a performance, ensure that you are at the correct venue, and that you’re there early. With respect to the performers, adjudicators and audience, once a performance begins the doors will close until the end of each performance. Some parents have been quite upset in the past when they have arrived late have been denied entry, so ensure you’re there early! Parking: Street parking is available around the College and St James Church, but it will be very busy, so plan for this wisely (arrive early, carpool, use public transport or prepare to have a good hike) so you don’t miss a performance. Festival Entry Fees: As with all festivals, there is an entry fee to pay at the door, whether you plan to attend one performance or the entire weekend. The single-day fee is $5 for unlimited performances across 4 venues, or $10 for the entire four days. Food: Hot food, snacks, cold drinks and coffee are available to purchase on campus from a variety of vendors. Food is not permitted inside performance venues, in keeping with the lessons we all teach our students about concert hall etiquette.

Chuter Street: Monday 27 August and Wednesday 29 August Thuruna Street: Monday 27 August and Tuesday 28 August

All additional helpers are appreciated, however we particularly need assistance at the Thuruna Street campus. The stall runs for the first session of the school day. We appreciate that families are being asked to volunteer a great deal of their time this term due to the celebrations being held in September, but if you are able to help, even if it is only for an hour, please contact Jen Davissen on [email protected] or 0414 415 617 or Kym Levi on [email protected] on 0437 124 961. Thank you for your help.

LIBRARY NEWS This week I am reading the last of the CBCA Early Reader short listed books in the Early Reader category. Come Down Cat by Sonia Hartnett. This is the third of the short listed stories that have a bedtime theme. Come Down Cat is suited to the upper age range of the Early Readers where as The Runaway Hug and Rudie Nudie had appeal to the younger range.

The children in their library lessons this week have been casting their votes for what they believe to be the best book in the category. You might like to ask them which book they voted for and why.

I will be telling the children of the winners on Monday the start of Book Week. To celebrate the week children may come dressed in their pyjamas on Monday. I have my pink flannelette pussycat pj’s ready!

I have already received some completed Premier’s Reading Challenge record sheets. There are three weeks left for the children at Thuruna St to read the required number of books. Years 3-4 read 20 books and years 5-7 read 15 books. I look forward to receiving more record sheets in the coming weeks.

Book Club comes home with your children today and is due back next Friday 24th August. Please make sure your child’s name and class are clearly marked on the order form.

ACTIVE SCHOOL TRAVEL - INTERESTED IN CARPOOLING?

16th August 2012

Dear Parents

As part of Queen of Apostles School’s efforts to reduce the traffic around the school during the

morning and afternoon peak pick up and drop off times, we are considering a car pooling scheme.

Did you know that there are families driving to school not from just Stafford, but other suburbs like

Albany Creek, Everton Park and Kedron.

If you are interested in joining a car pool / ride share scheme, even if for just one day a week, please

complete the form below and return it to the school. Your details will be sent back to all those

interested in participating, and you will receive details of others that have shown interest. The rest is

up to you – please contact the people on the list you receive.

This project is part of your School Travel Plan. Please help us make a healthier and safer environment

for all the children of Queen of Apostles.

Thank you

Michael Bruynesteyn
