EYP Doodling Day

“A picture is a poem without words” - Horace

We at RBKIA always believe that Art is just as important in our curriculum as reading, writing, science, and all the

other areas of learning. Teaching pre-schoolers the elements of art allows them to explore creativity while

strengthening fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Doodling activity helps young children as it has lots of

therapeutic benefits like memory improvement, stress relief, developing emotional intelligence and problem

solving skills. Thus the EYP section celebrated ‘Doodling Day’ on 5th April, 2019. All kids were extremely excited to

show their artistic skills. They created some beautiful designs.

EYP Nursery - Spring crowns

I see robins, I see birds’ nests Butterflies and flowers too,

Everything is growing… The wind is gently blowing,

Spring is here, spring is here. When kids manipulate a paintbrush, their fine motor skills improve. As the kids of Nursery are inquiring into the

unit, “The earth's natural cycles influence the activity of living things”, under the theme, ‘How the world works’,

they indulged into a creative and collaborative activity where they printed colourful flower prints and did sponge

dabbing on paper after which their teachers transformed them into beautiful spring headgears. This way our

blooming buds learnt about a new season, ‘Spring’ and the joyous and wonderful changes it brings in the

environment.

EYP K1 - Mastery of Early Math Skills

Math is one of the most basic skills we expect our children to master. "Mastery of early math skills predicts not only future math achievement, it also predicts future reading achievement," states Greg Duncan, PhD, of North western University. Research into the importance of early math skills shows that children who are taught math early and learn the basics at a young age are set up for a lifetime of achievement in all aspects of their academic performance. Giving your child the opportunity to get a head-start on math is one of the best things you can do for their future success. K1 learners were introduced to the mathematical concept of “Greater Than/Lesser than” through a story named “The Hungry Alligator” enacted by homeroom teachers. Through this lesson the learning outcome achieved was that the students could understand what are the 'greater than/ lesser than' values. An activity was conducted wherein learners were given 2 different sets of objects like dusters, pencils, books, paper cups, sponges and glue sticks & they had to pick the correct sign in form of a toy alligator and place it, the greater set following the rule that the alligator opens its mouth at the greater number & closes at the lesser number. It was a fruitful session for learners as well as for the teachers.

EYP K2 - Guest Speakers

The learners of K2 are inquiring into the unit, “People play different roles in the communities to which they belong”, under the theme, “How we organize ourselves”. There were informative and indulging sessions arranged with different guest speakers to get them further acquainted with the people who play a significant role in their community. From a Dentist, a Doctor, a Yoga Teacher to a Chef, proficient experts from diverse fields were called to help our children get hands on insight about what do they professionally do. The Dentist and the Doctor shared tips on what are the dos and don’ts that one must follow to live a healthy life, how to keep their teeth strong, how hygiene plays an important role and how they must take care of themselves. Our kids enjoyed doing different types of Yoga like musical yoga, meditational yoga and relaxation yoga with the Yoga Teacher. They all had a gala time knowing more about the tools used in cooking, the process of making a healthy sandwich and enjoyed cupcakes at the end of a yummy session with the Chef. Thanks to our Guest speakers our kids have gained a better understanding about these community helpers and their jobs. All in all our guest speakers inspired our little wonders to lead a healthy and a happy life.

PYP Grade 1C - Energy around us

Learners of Grade 1C inquired deeper into the conversion of energy by creating a model of a water wheel. It was a hands on learning experience for the 1st graders wherein they observed; how the water poured on the wheel utilizes the stored energy and gets transformed into kinetic energy, thus becoming knowledgeable. This practical exposure made it easy for them to comprehend the bigger idea of transformation of energy. The students of 1C showed enthusiasm to take an active part in this learning engagement. Reflection by children We enjoyed learning about the transformation Of ENERGY - Kaavya , Riyansh, Yoana, Aarna, Bhumeet , Leyshan, Arnav We learnt about potential energy being transformed to Kinetic energy - Hirak, Yatharth, Kiara, Mangalam, Bhumeet, Aabha,Tanvi, Kanhay, Vansh

PYP Grade 2 - Living Museum

‘Living Museum' was an interesting way for the 2nd graders to explore on different people who have impacted the community locally or globally. To make their learning experience enriching, they were encouraged to use their research skills to choose a famous personality they like, who has made a difference in the lives of people. The students of Grade 2 enthusiastically brought photos and relevant information to school and applied their thinking skills to make a chart which helped them in creating a Live Gallery. This galleria enabled them to develop open-mindedness to understand different characters and their contribution to the society. They demonstrated the learner profile of a risk-taker very evidently as they dressed up similar to the personality they had chosen or carried a prop to share their findings and perspective to the audience with great confidence.

PYP Grade 3 - Health is Wealth

Health is Wealth is a common and famous saying. Good health means having a balance between the mental, physical and social well-being of a person and not just to be disease free. This famous saying also emphasizes on the importance of staying fit as without that the other joys of life cannot be experienced. For our ongoing unit, ‘Body systems ‘a guest speaker session was arranged for the students. Dr. Rutika Dalvi was invited as a guest speaker to give information on the various body systems and ways to lead a healthy lifestyle. She discussed about the working of the various body systems and how all the systems are interconnected to each other. She also discussed the benefits of eating healthy food and the students were made aware of the problems that lead due to eating excessive junk food. The session was fruitful and further helped the students to develop their understanding of the working of the human body system. The session, thus, enhanced their critical thinking and self - management skills.

PYP Grade 3 - Enhancing Writing Skills

Writing is a key component in the language arts school curriculum. Third grade students are building skills in the writing process-research, planning, organising, revising and editing and spend significant amount of time engaged in writing on their own, as well as on assigned prompts. Students are given writing practice that helps them add detail to their writing. They are encouraged to think outside the box and get creative with written expression. Writing activities in 3rd grade include learning to organize work using a beginning, middle, and end, using illustrations to enhance text, writing procedures, diary writing, informative writing and writing different forms of poetry. Throughout the year they continue to increase their knowledge of grammar, spelling, mechanics, as well as learn how to conduct research. Students gain mastery of writing skills by working collaboratively and producing written texts. Here are some samples of writing done by our budding 3rd grade writers.

3rd Graders hone their writing skills and become proud writers

PYP Grade 4 - Non-Fire Cooking

Procedural texts are a common factual text-type that students will encounter frequently in literacy, across the curriculum, and throughout their lives. The purpose of procedural texts is to provide a series of precise, sequenced steps or directions that explain to the reader how to do something, and Grade 4 students took it to an entire new level by connecting it to creating their own drink/food. It had authentic presentations that featured several steps to create their own recipe. Through this activity students learnt to demonstrate their understanding of the function and range of the contexts of procedural writing. Ms Archana and Ms Niddhi were the judges and they were surprised by the cooking expertise and the ability of the students to explain the procedure. Once students created their recipe and presented it, they even wrote down explicit instructions for a sequence of steps needed to complete a task. Using appropriate nouns, verbs, adjectives, and linking words throughout a procedure was indeed a fun way of learning.

PYP Grade 5 - Choral Recitation

Students of Grade 5 created choral verse as a group task, pertaining to their selected topic and presented it to their class as well to Grade 4 students. Students added appropriate grammar functions such as similes, metaphors and idioms to make their recitation creative and interesting. They also prepared a PowerPoint as a back drop for their recitation. Using adequate props, costume and creative expression through the use of sounds, rhythm and body movement, which helped develop not only their imagination but also team work and group performance as well. This task also helped develop their thinking and communication skills.

PYP Grade 5A - Field Trip to Chabad House

Grade 5A exhibition group, who are inquiring into natural and man-made disasters, were out on a field trip to the Chabad house. This field trip taught us a lot that we didn't know. We met the Rabbi, Mr. Ismail, who spoke about Jews and their culture, the synagogues and a movement that had been started to give shelter to homeless Jews, most importantly in regards to the 26/11 terrorist attack. We inquired about the 26/11 terrorist attack and the Rabbi gave us all the details that we needed to know. We also visited the various floors including the baby Moishy's room who miraculously survived the attack. There were various plans to redevelop the damaged floors. We have decided to do something in the name of the 179 victims of 26/11 attack as a part of taking action. Later, we visited the Leopold Cafe where we explored the various bullet and granite marks that were still there. To sum up our field trip we visited a small WWI memorial made in memory of the Indian soldiers who were killed or assassinated in WWI. It was a memorable field trip. I am looking forward to more such field trips in the future.

MYP Grade 6A - Assembly Reflection

On the 29th of March, we the students of 6A had to put up an assembly, where we had to analyse and present a current issue. We chose the topic ‘Animal cruelty and caring for animals’’, as it is a very serious problem in our environment. Through our assembly we wanted to convey one message, that ‘We need to treat all living beings equally’. We started our assembly by showing a video that showed how we humans are treating the animals in our environment. We also presented an act, that was about how animals transform into humans and save their forest. Each student spoke one fact regarding animal cruelty. Through this we wanted to spread awareness about this problem to all the students. Last but not least we ended our assembly with a video, showing how animals treat us in today's world. The best part of our assembly was that each one of us had contributed is some way or the other. All the students enjoyed putting up this show, and it couldn't have been a such a great success without the help of our home room teachers, and all the teachers that gave us their lesson for practice.

MYP Grade 6B - Assembly Reflection

Every year we have a class Assembly, wherein we the students of each class put up an act related to the given topic. As now my class and I are in the MYP and the topic for our Assembly was Human Values. From the ideas to the execution of the performance our homeroom teachers, Mrs. Kamalika and Mrs. Sharmistha were very enthusiastic which made it a lot of fun. The whole assembly was based around a skit called ’The Magical Recipe of Life’. It was all shown through a storyline. There were four students who were collecting data for a chemistry experiment and the solution spilled and they all got transported to another land. They learned all the human values and how you should learn to respect, love, be responsible, be honest and co-operate well with everyone working with you. We enjoyed the storyline and the 4 children were divided into groups, boys and girls. There was a competition, whoever could solve more riddles in the magical land would go back to Earth. After competing with each other, they realized that it would be no fun for only 2 people to get back to Earth and leave the other two. They agreed on solving the last riddle together, working co-operatively and respecting each other’s thoughts. There were dances, a mime, a song and a thought of the day too within the skit. While preparing for the assembly, we increased our knowledge about the importance of human values. We also developed communication skills and our global context in this was Identities and relationships. Our message in this assembly was to show everyone the importance of human values. Our assembly was a great success which it wouldn’t have been without the hard efforts of all my classmates and especially our dear and hard working teachers who made this all possible.

MYP Grade 6B - Assembly Reflection

Our assembly was a great experience. Me and my friends worked together as a group and showed unity amongst each other . The global context we addressed was identities and relationships. Our performance in the magical recipe of life, had a few bumps along the way, but we covered it up and made the audience enjoy it . It was a super hit . We included a mime , dance , skit , and song. Every moment was special not only to the audience , but to the participants as well and if we enjoy the presentation , the performance enhances by itself . Our assembly also made us aware of how important human values are, and without our home room teachers , Ms. Sharmistha and Ms. Kamalika , I don’t think this would be possible .

MYP MYP Orientation to Grade 5 Students

We had all gathered in the auditorium for our second day of MYP Orientation. We started with Maths which was real fun, then moved on to P.E which was very informative and then on to English which was my favourite session. In this session Meera ma’am took us back to our in time in our baby schooldays! At first all of us thought she was being sarcastic but then she told us to run around and sing along with nursery rhyme. All of us were really excited because we had not done that for years, all of these years we had been studying not playing. So we ran around and sang along to the rhyme, “Wheels on the bus go round and round” and enjoyed ourselves. After we had seated ourselves, Meera ma’am explained us why we were doing this. All the rhymes we used to sing - we still remember. When we were little, we did not know what those words meant or who wrote the rhyme. That I thought was very logical, and this all relates to English! Oh, what a way to warm up for our poetry lessons! Then, Meera ma’am instructed us to do the second task, “Observe and take notes of what I am about to show you”. I was really curious about what she would show us. It was a video! She told us about a young girl named Diana, who recited a poem on Ukrain’s Got Talent. We watched the video, took some notes; Diana performed very well, with expression...she knew her pauses and she gave life to the poem! The audience was stuck with her recitation and some overwhelmed by her recitation, ran tears down their cheeks! After watching the video, Meera ma’am told us to write our own poems for 8 or 10 lines. We wrote our poems, went on stage and even read aloud for the audience! And then the session had concluded! This session was by far, one of my favourites because it was very informative, fun and it improved my listening and writing skills.

Shruti J. Grade 5 It was a lot of fun, today, at Meera ma’ams orientation. First, we took a trip down memory lane and we went back to our baby days. We sang a nursery rhyme and ran around wildly, as to imitate our pre nursery days. After that, we watched a YouTube video of a girl in ‘Ukraine’s Got Talent’ reciting a poem, and then we wrote a small poem of 8-10 lines ourselves. We all really enjoyed it. We finished our poems just as the session concluded. The English orientation was a lot of fun, and hands down on of my favourites.
