GeneralIn a circuit that provides power to a motor a number of protective & Control devices are normally present. The combination of these devices must be coordinated to ensure the efficiency & optimal protection of the motor. Here, the protection of such circuits strongly depends on the operational requirements, as the application for which the motor is used, the required starting frequency, required service level & applicable safety standards.

Co ordinationThe standards require tests to define the co ordination between the protective & switching devices within the motor circuit.Depending on the state of the components after the test two coordination.Classes, 1 & 2 have been defined.The unique properties of the Record Plus breakers allow GE to offer solutions to meet the highest standard. Type 2 co ordination.

COORDINATION TYPE 2 TEST SEQUENCE

Type 2 - Short-circuit test with current “Iq” <= 50kA This value which is generally 15kA is used to check the coordination of the device used in the motor starter circuit. For each combination with Record Plus™ breakers this value is mentioned in the following tables. After test with this current the following conditions must be met. No or minor welding of the contactors after testing; contact separation is simple and easy. The switchgear and controlgear are fully operational after test.

Record Plus™ circuit breakers excel in their characteristics as current and energy limiting devices. This allows one to use lighter and more economical downstream busbar systems and switchgear.A frequently used combination is that of a Record Plus™ breaker, used as a protection and switching device in the mains switchboard, and a Dilos load break switch, as an incomer, in a downstream, secondary switchboard. In accordance with the relevant Standards, the rated current of fuses is determined by tests conducted at 35°C ambient air temperature. When fuses are installed within enclosures, it is the temperature within the enclosure (fluid enviroment temperature) which determines whether de-rating is necessary.The effect of high enclosure temperatures on IPD Type T fuses is indicated by the table below.

In some circuits such as the motors, significant transient overcurrents are produced during switching, and it is not economical practice to match cable and fuse-link ratings. For these cases, the cable is chosen for the circuit load condition and the fuse-links are chosen to withstand the transient overcurrent condition.The fuse-links provide only short-circuit current protection to the motor, associated cables and other circuits components. The necessary overload protection is provided by other means such as the motor starter’s thermal overload relay.The short-circuit protection of cables is covered by Section 5 of AS/NZS 3008.1.1:1998 and the Table below shows how fuse-links relate to these requirements in protecting V75 rated PVC insulated copper conductors.

GE CONTACTOR SELECTION - LIGHTING CIRCUITS

The characteristics of the most usual lighting systems are as follows:

Incandescent lampsThe connection current in very high -of the order of 15 times- rated current. Although this is a very short duration, it is only taken into account in order for the contactor connection current not to be exceeded. The power factor is always maintained at 1.Fluorescent lampsThe connection current is slightly higher than rated current. The power factor is about 0.5. To improve up to 0.9, compensating capacitors can be used. In such cases, the connection power of the capacitor must be taken into account, the effect of which is appreciably greater on the smaller contactors.High pressure mercury vapour lampsThe connection current varies, depending on type, between 1.6 and 2 times the rated current and will hold for between 3 and 5 minutes.The power factor is of the order of 0.6 and this can be improved up to approximately unit value by means of compensating capacitors. In such cases, the connection power of the capacitor must be taken into account, the effect of which is appreciably greater on the smaller contactors.High pressure sodium vapour lampsThe connection current values varies, depending on type, between 1.3 and 1.6 times the rated current and will hold between 3 and 5 minutes.The power factor is of the order of 0.45 and this can be improved up to apporximately unit value by means of compensating capacitors. In such cases, the connection power of the capacitor must be taken into account, the effect of which is appreciably greater on the smaller contactors.
