“Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad because of her, all you who love her; exult exult with her.” The prophet Isaiah, the prophet of hope, tells us to rejoice in the Lord because we are loved. Isaiah reminds us that no matter how bad or difficult things look – we should rejoice in God’s love and forgiveness. Isaiah speaks to us about Jerusalem – not the one located in Israel, but the heavenly Jerusalem. In this New Jerusalem, we shall be comforted, our wounds shall be healed, our hearts shall rejoice because in heaven we shall find our comfort. Our physical world is filled with discouragement and disappointment. As Jesus sends out the seventy-two he does not mince words and he tells them how difficult the task will be; “Go on your way; behold, I am sending you like lambs among wolves. Carry no money bag, no sack, no sandals; and greet no one along the way.” Jesus tells them that they have a mission and they are not to let anything get in their way. There can be no distractions when it comes to proclaiming the Kingdom of God. Numbers in the scriptures are always symbolic. Jesus sent out seventy-two – a number representing universality – the gospel is to be preached to the entire world and not just to a select few. Now is the time the mission has a sense of urgency. Interestingly, Jesus sends them out two by two. No doubt having someone with you can provide some safety but it also allows them to correct one another if they happen to go astray so that they can keep on task. Two people provide witness to all that Jesus said and done. This gives them strength and encouragement so that they can complete their mission. The seventy-two appear to have been successful and they return rejoicing. Jesus, again being straight forward tells them that they should rejoice in the success of their work but instead to rejoice that they are among the saved, those whose names are written in heaven. Sometimes this is difficult for those who minister. We all want to be successful in doing our jobs and yet the success does not belong to us but to Christ. We should not rejoice based on the fullness of the Church or the size of the collection. No, we should rejoice because we are baptized and are called the Children of God. Where does your joy come from? A little chuckle I found this on the internet and I thought it was a little amusing. I have decided to send it to some of my friends who recently became pastors. PRAYING WHEN THE LIGHTS GO OUT… The Benedictines continue praying from memory, without missing a beat. The Jesuits begin to discuss whether they have an obligation to pray. The Franciscans praise God for the gift of darkness. The Dominicans debate on light as a source of divine knowledge. The Carmelites fall into silence and meditate. The parish priest goes into the basement and resets the breaker! In Christ’s love and peace, Fr. Frank

14th Sunday of Ordinary Time July 7, 2019

Summertime, and the scriptures are full of good news--and maybe even road trips! We hear Isaiah exhorting the Israelites after they traveled back to Jerusalem from their exile in Babylon. We hear the seventy-two disciples congratulating themselves for going out to proclaim the Kingdom and coming back with tales of success. But the subtext of all of this is the ultimate road trip—Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem and the Cross. Imagine how elated the Israelites were, returning from their captivity in Babylon. Even better, the once-destroyed Jerusalem had been restored. Their God had saved them and they were going home. Isaiah, their prophet, assured them of God’s loving care for them, comforting, like a mother, giving them abundant cause for rejoicing. Yet how did they travel? The community of Israel went together, supporting each other, but the road must have been hard on them. Their faith and trust in the merciful God of Israel sustained them. Now imagine the seventy-two disciples being sent to preach the Kingdom and to prepare people for the Good News of Jesus coming into their lives. No food, no money, no luggage, no reservations—just their faith in Jesus and their optimistic enthusiasm for God’s Kingdom. The Good Shepherd had sent his lambs into the world of wolves, with instructions to help them deal with rejection and hardship. Can you imagine the disciples returning from their mission, excited, heady with the successes they experienced on the road? Although they attributed their deeds to the power of the name of Jesus, they were obviously bragging about what they accomplished. In today’s second reading, Paul is writing to the community of Galatia, reminding them that the only appropriate boast is in the cross of Jesus Christ. Expecting the cross, we might find that our fellow laborers in the fields have dwindled in number. So we pray for companions on our own journeys to walk with us in faithful joy.

It's summertime and that means vacation time! A nice relaxing vacation to kick back and relax and get away from it all. One thing that is not relaxing

is packing for a vacation. It could be a headache! All the little things to remember to bring and check off your list can seem as if your not "getting away from it all” ...but taking it all with you! The Bible tells us that Jesus appointed seventy-two of his followers and sent them out, two-by-two, to go out into every town and place where he was about to go. Do you know what Jesus told them to take with them? Nothing! Jesus said to them, "GO!" Then he went on to say, "Do not even take a purse, or a bag, or a pair of sandals." Just the clothes on your backs. Now, why did Jesus say that? When Jesus sends someone on a mission, their success or failure does not depend upon what they bring with them-- It depends on Him! We can be pretty sure of that because of what Jesus told people when he sent them out. He said, "He who listens to you listens to me; he who rejects you rejects me; but he who rejects me rejects him who sent me." Just as Jesus sent out seventy-two people, he wants us to go to people today and share the good news that the kingdom of God is near. The results do not depend on us. We should not become puffed up when people receive the message . . . and we should not be discouraged when they reject the message. We should just go and tell the good news….as if everything depends on Jesus...because it does! Let us pray, Dear Jesus, may we be ready and willing to go when you say, "GO!" and leave the results up to you. Amen

We Make Hospital Visits If you or a relative of yours is admitted to the hospital it would be so helpful if you

would call St. Michael to let us know you are there. It is not a

bother for us! We try to visit the sick on a regular basis and would love to

visit you if you are hospitalized. Please call: 349-0903 and we will use our own list of people to visit.

“He said to them, ‘The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few…’” Luke 10:2

As Catholics we are all called to serve. However, many of us are unsure of what our charisms or gifts from the Holy Spirit are to help build God’s Church. Through prayer we are able to discern how God is calling us. The next time your pastor or fellow parishioner asks you to join a committee, ask God first, if that is what He wants you to do with your gifts.

We never stop working on our relationship with God. Here is something your family can do during the

LIVE THE CORPORAL AND SPIRITUAL WORKS OF MERCY BY SERVING AND HELPING SOMEONE . . . MANY PEOPLE NEED YOUR HELP . . .

KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN AND LOOK

FOR A WAY TO HELP SOMEONE You can give a blessing bag to a homeless person. If your children are old enough, offer to help an elderly neighbor with yard work, visit with an elderly person in a nursing home, or volunteer at a food pantry, soup kitchen, or shelter. Any charitable work is the idea. We are people of service, and we need to remember to serve our Lord by helping each other every day, using our time, talents, and treasures! Each of us has special gifts given to us by God. How awesome is that to know that “I have a special gift given to me by God! Wow! How can I use my gift to help others? How can I help others with my gift?” Pray about it and God will guide you!

What does it look like when a girl saves the day?

St. Maria Goretti, whose feast we celebrate on July 6, can show us. She wasn’t even twelve years old when she offered her life in service to the Truth. At that young age, Maria was attacked and faced her attacker with joy, humility, compassion, courage, and above all, purity of heart. No wonder she is a particular patroness for youth. What can we, as Catholic mothers, do to inspire our children to live the same virtues that St. Maria Goretti chose? The obvious answer is to make sure our kids know the saints, each one showing a different facet of the courage God gives us to follow Him to the cross and beyond. Sometimes, though, we must engage our children’s imaginations along with their faith. Another way to give our children examples of virtue is to provide them with quality fiction that shows in a particularly imaginative way how great virtue wears sometimes the most ordinary of faces. Also, since fiction can illustrate great virtues often without the frank violence that our saints had to suffer, it often can be used to give our children good examples of great character without frightening a particularly anxious child, for instance. He decidido enviarlo a algunos de mis amigos recién nombrados párrocos.
