Voice of Saint Michael August 9, 2020

In our first reading today, Elijah, one of the great prophets of Israel, was searching for God. Elijah noticed the greatness and power of nature. Elijah also noticed that God was not in the mighty wind, nor in the powerful earthquake, nor in the blazing fire. Elijah expected to find God in these great and powerful places and yet he realized that the Lord God was present in a tiny whispering sound. Where do you look for God? I am sure that many of us search for God in the power and beauty of creation. Some people search all over the earth for places that “others” say God is present. I am sure that like Elijah we too are surprised to discover that we do not have to go far to find God – for God is present within each of us. Sometimes God is present to us in the soft whispers of our heart. So quiet is God’s voice that if we are not listening carefully we might not hear him. We do not have to travel to the Holy Land, Rome, or other places to find God – all we have to do is open our ears and hear the gentle whisper of the One who loves us. In today’s gospel, Jesus says to Peter, “Come.” Peter wanted to be with Jesus but the mighty water separated them. Not only did Peter desire to be with Jesus, so did Jesus desire to be with Peter. I think the same is true for us. Jesus wants to have a personal relationship with each of us and just as he commanded Peter, he too commands us to come to him. Peter began to sink when the storm was too much for him. He took his eyes off Jesus, did not trust in his power, and began to fear. Often times we take our eyes off Christ and when we do – this leads to certain failure for us. We begin to doubt, we begin to fear and we succumb to our own insecurities and anxieties. Jesus is very clear to us today – keep your eyes focused on me and all will be well. Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

On Saturday, August 15, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Assumption celebrates our belief that Mary was assumed (taken up) body and soul into heaven. The idea of the Assumption of Mary was first found in Church writings during the fifth and sixth centuries. Even though these writings were “not official” theological pronouncements, they show us the early belief of Mary’s Assumption into heaven. Interestingly, that although almost universally believed for more than a thousand plus years, the Scriptures do not mention that Mary was taken up to heaven. In the same way, the Scriptures are silent on Mary’s Immaculate Conception. On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII declared the dogma of the Assumption. He stated, “We pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.” The Assumption of Mary has something to do with us – the Assumption is the fulfillment of our final hope to be glorified with Christ in our humanity. Mary was first and our hope is to follow into the glory of heaven. There is an important difference between the Ascension of Jesus and the Assumption of Mary. To ascend is to rise up under one’s own power, while to be assumed means something that is being done to you. Jesus, being Divine, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, had no need of assistance. Mary, although free from sin, was human and needed assistance from God to enter into the heavenly glory. We celebrate today Mary’s entrance into heaven and our hope that we will one day enter into God’s heavenly glory. Let us continue to look to the Blessed Virgin as a perfect model for us to follow. Let our devotion and love for Mary always lead us to God, who loves us and who is ready to fill us with his abundant blessings. Pray for us, Oh Holy Mary Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. AMEN! Since the Assumption falls on a Saturday, it remains a Holy Day but not a Holy Day of Obligation. We have scheduled First Holy Communion on August 15 and consequently there will not be a Mass that day. A recorded Mass celebrating the Assumption will be available on our parish website www.saintmike.com In Mary’s maternal love, Fr. Frank

Voice of Saint Michael August 9, 2020

One of the favorite quotes I’ve heard is, “Jesus led you to it, he will get you through it.” It’s a saying that I’ve said to myself over and over when I am going through difficult times. When we think of Jesus,

we tend to think of all the beautiful promises he has offered to us. We believe in heaven, forgiveness and loving one another. All of those things give us wonderful feelings. Sometimes, when we experience difficult times, it is hard to imagine that Jesus is with us – because we can’t imagine Jesus would lead us to something that would bring us sadness. Jesus does not bring the sad times, however, Jesus is with us even more when we are sad! Jesus will help us learn from the sadness and come out of it fine. We just need to keep our faith in God strong and never doubt Him.

In the Gospel of Matthew, we hear the amazing story about the time Jesus walked on water! Imagine that – seeing Jesus come towards you from the middle of the sea. If you have ever seen a surfer, you know they are standing on a surf board and that can be a pretty awesome sight to see! But, Jesus didn’t have a surf board. He was walking on the water because God gave him that ability to do so. This was one of the miracles that Jesus worked so that the apostles would see that he was not just any man. Jesus WAS the Son of God. At one point, his apostle, Peter, asked Jesus to allow him walk on the water. Jesus let Peter walk on the water but when the waves got too strong, Peter started to sink into the water and asked for Jesus to save him. Jesus helped Peter and said, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” I can only imagine Jesus thinking to himself, “I just walked on water – and this man still doesn’t believe I am the Son of God?! Because he doubted me, he almost drowned. “

I think this story is a good example of how many of us treat God. It’s almost as if people want to see proof that God exists in order to believe in Him. The truth is God IS always with us. Jesus will always lead us through anything with his guidance. We must remember those moments when we feel God’s presence and know they are OUR proof that He is with us – in good times and in bad. Write down the moments in your life where you felt God was with you. On the days where sadness fills you, look at that list and remember all the times Jesus held you up just like he held on to Peter.

Let’s pray: Jesus, thank you for always being with me. Please continue to bless me each and every day.

How do we encounter God in the midst of the trials and storms of our lives? Our readings help us reflect upon God’s presence with us in difficult times. We hear of the prophet Elijah, who had just boldly demonstrated God’s power, and is now terrified as he flees for his life, desperately seeking God’s presence. We hear of Peter, after briefly walking on water during the storm, sinking fast as fear overwhelms him. At times our fears, sadness, or fatigue might severely test even our strongest desires to care for others and to serve God. Perhaps these are the moments when, as we encounter our weakness, we may open ourselves more deeply to God’s strength. Often with difficulty, and perhaps over a lifetime, we can learn to depend on God, who always extends a loving hand toward us, especially during the storms of our lives. In Matthew’s Gospel, Peter often serves as a representative of Jesus’ other disciples, and of all who strive to follow Jesus. When Peter desires to imitate Jesus by walking on the water in the middle of the storm, maybe wishing to show how strong his faith is, he encounters his own limitations and his need to be rescued by Jesus. Jesus then says to Peter, with tenderness as well as with challenge, “O you of little faith.” Jesus accepted the fragile and limited faith of Peter and the other disciples and loved them unconditionally. The early church identified with Peter, as people with a “little” faith. Their faith was not fully mature, or as extraordinary as others’ faith might seem to be. But they knew that their faith, however small or imperfect, was real and true. We might remember that our own “little” faith is cherished by God. God loves us as we are, and always seeks to form us toward a fully mature Christian life of faith.

Voice of Saint Michael August 9, 2020
