Hillulah of Ben Ish Hai We celebrate the Hillulah of the Ben Ish Hai, yesterday and today, Thursday eve-ning, August 30th and Friday, August 31st, 2012. An Aramaic word meaning "festivity," a hillulah generally commemorates the death of a sage or hakham, whose soul is regarded as having been reunited with Hashem. This evening, we should light a candle and take time to discuss the life and teachings of Rabenu Yosef Haim. The Ben Ish Hai, also known as Rabbi Yo-sef Chaim, was born on the 1st of Septem-ber 1832 and passed away on the 30th of August 1909, the 13th of Elul. He was a leading Iraqi Hakham (Sephardic Rabbi), an authority on Jewish law (Halakha) and a master Kabbalist. He is best known as au-thor of the work on Jewish law entitled Ben Ish Chai which translates as "The Son of a Man Who Lives," a title by which the rabbi is also known. "Rakhem Alai" or "Have Mercy on Me" is a song that celebrates the Ben Ish Hai's leg-acy. The song asks Hashem to have com-passion for us. We ask to be granted mercy not on our merits, but because of the Ben Ish Hai's merit, since he performed uncounted good works during his life. Listen to Rabbi Batzri perform "Rakhem Alai" on youtube.
Rabbenu Hakham Yoseph Hayyim a"h was one of the greatest of Jewish Babylonian Hakhamim in recent times. Also known as the Ben Ish Hai, he was a Rabbi and Kab-balist whose teachings were followed in nu-merous countries and continue to be fol-lowed by Sepharadim world-wide From early childhood, his rare talents and noble traits were apparent. He studied in a Torah school as a child and then with his uncle. By the age of 14 he started at Midrash Beth Zilkha. He studied Torah with the head of the Midrash, Hakham Abdallah Somekh, alav hashalom, and excelled using his sharp mind and exceptional memory. A few years later he left the Bet Midrash and learned Torah day and night in his attic. In 1851, he married and had a son and daughter. His knowledge covered all aspects of Juda-ism, the hidden and the revealed, Kabbalah, Talmud, Mishna, Halakha and more. He wrote numerous books on all aspects of Ju-daism. He received questions in Halakha from all over the world and was in close contact with Sephardi and Ashkenazi lead-ers and scholars. He was a very pure and holy man. He was said to possess "Ruakh Hakodesh," a holy spirit, even though he himself denied this.

Guest Speaker
Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan "With Love & Not Fear"
Saturday, September 15th During morning services
Join us for an insightful program from our Westwood neighbor, Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan of UCLA's Hillel Center. He will provide an in depth look at Rosh Hashanah and discuss why this holiday that precedes Yom Kippur has no penitential prayers.
When his father, Hakham Eliyahu Hayyim, passed away. Hakham Yosef Hayyim replaced him, becoming the only Hakham in Baghdad to give a Derasha (sermon) in Baghdad on five very important Shabbatot in the year. He continued in his father's position for fifty years. The Ben Ish Hai was known for his love of Eretz Yisrael and supported messen-gers who came to collect money for the poor there. In 1869, he made a trip to Eretz Yisrael and received a very warm welcome by all the Hakhamim. On the 8th of Elul 5669, he went on a pilgrimage to to the tomb of the Prophet Ezekiel, "Yehezkel Hannavi." Thereaf-ter, Rabbi Yoseph Hayyim became sick and on the 13th of Elul passed away. He was returned to Baghdad, arriving at night to the community's very great sor-row. That very night he was buried. The turnout was huge, including Jews and non-Jews alike. All came to pay their respects to this very great man. The list of his many great works in-cludes: Ben Ish Hai , Rab Pealim , Da'ath Utvuna , 'Od Yoseph Hai, Ad-deret Eliyahu, Ben Yehoyada, Torah Lishmah, Commentary on, Tikkunei Ha-zohar, Rav Berakhot. Shabbat Shalom
