NewsDecember is the best time to buy a new boat and get a great deal. In fact, if you’re looking for a bargain, between December 14 and the end of the year is the best time of all. If you find a dealer showroom that is full of boats like this one, you have come to the right place. The dealer will be very glad to see you in December.

If you are like most boat buyers, chances are in December you are too distracted by gift-giving, family travel plans, office parties, and a host of other once-a-year complications to give boat-buying much of a thought.

The boating industry has long abhorred the month of December for just that reason. Historically, this is the month with the lowest new boat sales and, as a result, most builders do not even advertise in December, which, of course, helps fulfill the promise. Dealers, too, pull in their marketing horns, close their showrooms early, give sales staff time off for the holidays and generally try to reduce expenses that month, treating it as a lost cause – which, once again, ensures that it is.

Winter is a time to reflect and repose. As you think of the year that has just passed,

think of what you have learned and what you can do in the new year. December

is a time to make realistic new year’s resolutions and innovative plans for your

future. Instead of focusing on the drab aspects of the season, focus on the solstice,

Christmas and other festivities, and the opportunity to relax, eat, and be merry with

friends and family.

10 Tips To Keep Your Boat Safe This Winter

You know how boats are. Little problems compound quickly into big ones. If we had to give only one piece of advice this winter, it’s this: Visit your boat. Snow, ice, wind, rain, and damp air can take their toll on both of you. If guilt is a good motivator, think of it this way: You can sit by a warm fire drinking hot cocoa while winter rages, but your boat has to be outside, enduring winter’s worst, so make some time to visit. Here are 10 tips from the that can help prevent damage to your boat over winter.

1. If your boat’s in the water, take a walk around it at the dock. Are there any changes in the waterline? If so, check the bilge for water, a good practice at any time. If you find any, locate the source. It might be a leaking thru-hull or stuffing box, or be coming from the deck through a hatch or portlight.

2. Verify that all seacocks are closed, except for the cockpit. Also check that leaves don’t clog the cockpit scuppers, which could fill the cockpit and force drains underwater, back-flooding the boat.

3. Check your docklines for security and chafe. Winter storms can put a lot of strain on docklines so make sure you use a good chafe guard, and make sure the boat is tied so it can’t get caught under the dock.

Tips10 Tips To Keep Your

Boat Safe This Winter Part 2.

4. Check the operation of the bilge pump. It should work even if the battery switch is off. Manually turn on the switch to verify the pump comes

5. Inspect the shore power cord and battery charger. Verify the battery electrolyte hasn’t evaporated and add some if needed. If you spot corrosion on battery terminals, clean it off now.

6. Look for fuel, oil, or coolant leaks. You don’t want your bilge pump to spew oil into the water. In addition to polluting the environment, you could be in for a big fine.

7. Now’s the time to remove expensive electronics. Boatyards are like ghost towns in the winter, and can be easy pickings for thieves.

8. Make sure the boat is well-ventilated. Air circulation prevents mold and mildew from forming down below and keeps the boat smelling fresh. Treat any mold that you find now, before it gets worse.

9. If your boat is stored ashore, check the jackstands. Make sure they haven’t shifted or sunk into the ground, and are chained together under the boat. 10. Make sure that water isn’t pooling on deck or in the cockpit. Nothing good ever comes from standing water inside or outside a boat; water can damage the gelcoat and cause stains.

ReportUpper Chesapeake Bay

Fishing Report

Water temperatures in the lower Susquehanna River are in the low 40s now, and striped bass fishing has just about come to a halt. Fishing for a mix of channel, flathead, and blue catfish has been good for those seeking some fishing action. Yellow perch are also moving into the tidal rivers and creeks. Fresh cut bait of any kind will catch the catfish, and minnows and small lures fished close to the bottom work well for yellow perch.

It has been slim pickings for those trolling or jigging the channel edges. The deep channel edges off Podickory Point and the mouth of the Magothy River are two popular places to fish. Most anglers are pulling umbrella rigs with a bucktail dressed with a sassy shad as a trailer, behind heavy inline weights to get them close to the bottom where fish are suspended. Those jigging are targeting the same areas plus the deeper sections of the Bay Bridge rock piles, piers, and concrete abutments. Many have switched to heavier jigs in order to reach the depths where the striped bass are suspended.

Colder water is causing striped bass to slow their metabolism down, and they often stop feeding do so only sparingly as water temperatures drop into the low 40s. They tend to be holding in the depths of the channels, where they are finding slightly warmer water temperatures. It is not uncommon to find them stacked up and unwilling to strike a jig or trolled lure. In fact, when jigging over a concentration of fish, you may find you snag as many as actually take a jig.
