Improvements in Aspen Process Control

Calibration Ratio for Sub-Controllers Run in Adaptive for one sub-controller without affecting the entire controller. Users can now specify calibration ratio for individual sub-controllers.Visual Transforms (Linearization) Easily linearize variables by using visual scatter plots. The new scatter plots have an auto fit option that optimizes the data linearization. Users can also create transforms from predictions right within the model builder. All of these functions can be executed without leaving the Aspen Process Control builder application.

Several Modeling Improvements• Significant improvements in the Smart Slice algorithm

• Reorganized case editor with much improved workflow

• Option to save the workspace on demand is now available

• Allow variables to be used in cases even if they are not in the master model

• New edit slices dialog and improve the visualization of the slices in the case

What’s New in aspenONE V8.8The aspenONE V8.8 software release includes feature enhancements— in both the aspenONE MSC and aspenONE Engineering suites—to help you take further advantage of the power of optimization.

New in Advanced Process Control V8.8 for May 2015

Smart Tune for Aspen DMC3 ApplicationsSmart Tune introduces a novel way to setup the steady-state optimizer. The new algorithm in Aspen DMC3 eliminates the need to ‘tune’ the LP to achieve the desired constraint behavior. It allows the user to explicitly enter the controller objectives when configuring the controller.

The new controller engine algorithm introduces MV priorities to sequentially optimize the MVs starting with the highest priority. The user explicitly specifies controller objectives (instead of MV costs) which makes the new steady-state optimizer algorithm less sensitive to model changes. Smart Tune also features a wizard that guides users through the necessary steps to tune a DMC3 controller with ease.

With Smart Tune, engineers and operators can now view the controller strategy online and quickly troubleshoot or understand the controller behavior when running against specific constraints. Users can quickly simulate and modify MV priorities to reflect current economic objectives through the APC Web Interface online.

New in Aspen Plus for May 2015

Aspen Plus V8.8 extends polymer modeling to solids, allows for easy access to Aspen Process Manual, shares with aspenONE Drive and offers enhancements to Relief Sizing and Activated Analysis.

Extension of Solids Polymer Modeling in Aspen Plus

Solids Modeling in Aspen Plus has been extended so that polymers (and oligomers) can be treated as solids below their melting points— adding to the modeling capabilities of Aspen Polymers in Aspen Plus, the leading modeling technology for accurately and reliably modeling polymer processes, and the entire aspenONE Engineering suite. • Ensure that the polymer attributes are conserved and that

consistent physical properties are used throughout the flowsheet

• Properly model and optimize the entire polymer production process including both the upstream fluid and downstream solids sections of the process

• Reduce energy usage and capital cost, and improve product throughput and quality

Enhanced Conversion from DBR Amine Package to Acid Gas Package

The Acid Gas package is easy to set up, contains an accurate column solver, and offers superior ther modynamics and mass transfer rate-based distillation. An added feature within this release allows you to open a case within Aspen HYSYS, which includes a DBR Amine or Amines Pkg fluid package. You’ll receive an automated dialog box, recommending that you utilize the new Acid Gas package for gas treating.• Aspen HYSYS Case is automatically con verted from DBR Amine fluid

package to Acid Gas

• A backup of current case is created, ensuring that the data isn’t lost in conversion

• A conversion report is logged, informing the user of any warnings or errors that may have occurred occurred during the con version

aspenONE Engineering Safety Solution Aids in Pressure Relief Analysis

Pressure relief analysis work can be completed more efficiently with the aspenONE Engineering Safety Solution. Utilizing the pressure relief sizing tools of the Safety Analysis Environment within Aspen Plus and Aspen HYSYS, in combination with these powerful simulators and Aspen Flare System Analyzer, relief analysis workflows are streamlined, as manual data transfer between programs is eliminated. In this release, the new relief load calculation enhancements for heat exchanger tube rupture, control valve failure, and fire emergency scenarios further utilize the simulator integration to generate more automated and rigorous calculations. These enhancements help encourage ease of use when completing pressure relief analysis work.• Utilize the integration of the Safety Analysis Environment’s relief

sizing tools with Aspen Plus and Aspen HYSYS simulators to more rigorously analyze overpressure scenarios for more accurate process safety results

• Reduce time spent sizing relief devices across the entire workflow by using a process safety software solution integrated with simulation

Improvements to Activated Analysis in Aspen HYSYS and Aspen Plus

Activated Analysis has been significantly improved for better performance, speed, and discoverability to promote a more efficient workflow.• Analyze and screen process alternatives and optimize process

designs without leaving the process simulator and without immediate expert knowledge

• Significantly reduce cycle time between process engineering, exchanger design & rating, and cost estimation groups

• Evaluate more process designs in less time—achieving energy and capital optimized process designs
