The Corin Tucker Band 1,000 Years CD / LP Selling Points: l + Corin Tuckerʼs long anticipated solo release + Sleater-Kinney sold over 500,000 albums + Touring East Coast October 2010 Overview: l
The new record began with the same surprise turn that started Corin Tuckerʼs
career back in 1991, ended Sleater-Kinneyʼs 11-year year run in 2006 and inspired the punk-feminist rocker to redefine herself as a stay-at-home mom.
It was early 2009, and Tucker was performing at a benefit show in her hometown of Portland, OR airing out a couple of new songs. Another benefit -- and another pair of unheard tunes -- followed a few weeks later. The reaction from friends, fans and perfect strangers was unanimous. “Everyone was saying, ʻOh, itʼd be cool if you made a recordʼ,” Tucker recalls. “So I thought, Yeah! I should!” Cue the wrenching rhythms and hard-angle melodies, the slashing guitars and wildly passionate vocals. Only now the hard edges come nestled in lush weaves of acoustic guitars, keyboards, interlocking percussion, even cellos and violins, which places “1,000 Years” deep into Tuckerʼs creative headwaters -- another addition to her 20-year catalogue of restless songs for restless spirits.
The feelings reverberate from song to song. In the emotional chill that hangs over “1,000 Years,” in the tense long-distance love letters at the heart of “Half A World Away” and “Itʼs Always Summer.” Yes, Lance travels a lot for his work. But, Tucker hastens to add, “I just want to say how much I love my husband… there are moments when Iʼm raising two kids when heʼs gone and Iʼm just trying cope. But like in “Itʼs Always Summer,” the real message is, Iʼm waiting for you and itʼs going to be okay in the end.” The happy ending is more difficult to imagine for the unemployed parents at the heart of “Thrift Store Coats,” inspired by the real agonies of some recession-rocked neighbors. “ So many dads in our community were losing their jobs, suddenly there was this terrible sinking feeling. Itʼs been brutal in Oregon.”
So the musician picks up her guitar and lets her fingers search for a glimmer of light. This time it didnʼt have to come with so many hard edges. Sadness, frustration, even outrage could come in a variety of sounds and textures - the piercing clarity of Tuckerʼs voice, the sudden eruption of a snarly guitar, the perpetual struggle for spiritual balance, even in the midst of economic catastrophe and the life-shaking travails of domestic bliss. – Peter Carlin, 2010 Press Quotes: l “Americaʼs best rock band.” – Greil Marcus (2001) “Tucker still wails with a primal urgency that is one of the most compelling sounds in rock music today.” – Pitchfork (May, 2005) “Get excited.” – Pitchfork (June, 2010)

Marnie Stern Marnie Stern CD / LP Selling Points: l + Third album released by Kill Rock Stars. + Previous two albums have sold over 10,000 copies. + Touring in 2010 Overview: l
Marnie Stern the album mirrors Marnie Stern, the woman. Birthed during a
challenging period in her life, the self-titled Marnie Stern is a compendium of life stories both bitter and sweet.
From ballads to her signature pop guitar-tapping style, Stern and long-time co-conspirator Zach Hill have churned out (for lack of a better word) an enormous album that will further cement Stern as a rising star in todayʼs progressive music landscape. Stern also enlists the bass talents of psych-rock Canadian musician Matthew Flegel (of the band Women) and up-and-coming mixer Lars Stalfors (Mars Volta, Funeral Party) resulting in Stern stepping up her sonic game and revealing a mature and more focused side of herself. “I wanted to pay more attention to the delicate and subtly layered spaces in between sound and just make things louder and fuller where I didnʼt on my last 2 records.” When asked to sum her album up she maintains, “It's direct and honest and real. Iʼm no longer taking cover under guitar lines or yelping vocals.”
Marnieʼs third and latest LP, while clearly containing her strongest songs ever, had its fumbles on the way to the finish line. She laughs when describing how the initial recording files were lost and ultimately retrieved through a series of trials-by-fire (upon which many a cigarette was lit) and in one complete statement, she quips: “Holy Doodle!” You will find both the artist and the album to be brighter, louder, and bustling with confidence as the end result.
Clearly, Marnie Stern's life and music are not easily separated; which is why Marnie Stern the record and Marnie Stern the person have REAL personality. Upon hearing her last two albums, In Advance of the Broken Arm (2007) and This Is It And I Am It And You Are It And So Is That And He Is It And She Is It And It Is It And That Is That (2008), itʼs quite evident that Stern lives in between the lines of chaos and harmony. While Sternʼs previous efforts garnered much critical acclaim, highlighting Sternʼs dexterity with both guitar playing and songwriting, she still remains the underdog of contemporary celebrated female musicians.
Three albums into her career, this certainly leaves her exposed. Yet, within that exposure, we find something more relatable and familiar to us all; vulnerability and resilience. And with this collection of songs, all you hear is…ʻMarnie Sternʼ…which is destined for greatness.
Press Quotes: l “…itʼs undeniable that the star of the show here is Marnie; no one does what she does; combining finger-tapping hard guitar rock with a deeply grained intelligence of rock past, sing like a strained teenager, yet still make it all sound fun as all hell.” – Prefix Magazine (May, 2009) “Marnie Stern appealed to the heart. Her music didn't just aim to impress, but to move.” – Pitchfork (October, 2008) One of “the greatest female guitarists of all time.” - Venus Magazine (September, 2008)

Flags is a dreamy, alternative-pop collection that showcases her agile soprano, lilting melodies, and knack for telling her stories through the lives of vibrant characters on songs like “Betty,” (co-written with Switchfoot’s Jon Foreman and Ben West of Detroit indie duo The Real Efforts of Real People), “Crows and Locusts,” “Jack Kerouac,” and “Ice on Her Lashes.” “I’ve never used as many characters or as much narrative in my songwriting as I have on this record,” Fraser says. “On my previous albums [2003’s What To Do With Daylight and 2008’s Albertine], I was singing completely as myself, which is why I think I got so burnt out from touring. Albertine was inspired by incredibly signifi cant events and people and every time I’d sing I’d go back to that moment where my heart was ripped open. So singing such heavy songs nearly every night for three years took a toll. On Flags, it’s still me speaking, but it’s me speaking through the voices of different characters and their stories. It’s more survivable.” The album also features a co-written duet with Aqualung’s Matt Hales, titled “Who Are We Fooling”.

NINJA TUNE XX
The Ninja Tune label is twenty years old this September and what we’ve put together to celebrate this momentous anniversary is not a retrospective but what we’re calling a futurespective. This 2CD release is volume 1 of a compilation of new exclusive tracks and remixes, not just from Ninja artists, but from some of the biggest names in contemporary electronic music.
Part 1 includes tracks from Two Fingers with the absolutely pummeling opener “Fools”, and many more new and exclusive tracks from the likes of The Bug, Roots Manuva, Daedelus, and Amon Tobin to name but a few. It also sees the return of Big Dada Sound with the cream of the label’s UK MCs riding a Bless Beats rhythm.
With remixes from Flying Lotus, Coldcut, Diplo, Benga, and more! This is a release not to be missed.

NINJA TUNE XX
The Ninja Tune XX twentieth anniversary celebrations continue in the form of the second compilation of fantastic tracks.
Volume 2 includes another feast of music with highlights coming in the form of Autechre’s minimalist remix of The Bug’s “Skeng”; the Floating Points Ensemble’s epic soul-jazz number “Post Suite”; the exquisite link-up between Lou Rhodes and The Cinematic Orchestra on “One Good Thing”; Gaslamp Killer’s vicious re-work of DJ Vadim’s classic “Terrorist”; the truly far-out “Foley Room” reinterpretation from the Kronos Quartet; Mala’s dubphonic interpretation of Andreya Triana’s “A Town Called Obsolete”; and music from the likes of Daedelus, Bonobo, Roots Manuva, Anti-Pop Consortium, Jaga Jazzist, and more!
As Bob Dylan once remarked: “Some may like a soft Brazilian singer, but I have given up all attempts at perfection.” Tom Zé made his debut in the late 1960s as an insurgent voice of Tropicália, a movement that lampooned the generals in power in Brazil and also rebelled against prevailing notions of good taste in Brazilian popular music -- often associated with the suave sound of bossa nova. The refusal of bossa nova's aesthetics of “perfection” was central to the brash hybridity of the tropicalists, who reveled in startling sonic juxtapositions of rock, samba, and a variety of regional Brazilian genres. This didn't stop Tom Zé from “studying” bossa nova from a perspective that was slightly awry and decentered. Recent albums have revealed a lyrical, melodic dimension of Tom Zé's music, which was previously obscured by his quest to unsettle and subvert the tradition of Brazilian song. Yet here he embraces the soft beauty of bossa nova on his own terms. With a host of Brazilian guests and a cameo from David Byrne.

Tom Zé: ‘The most eccentric, visionary and irreverent member of
Brazil’s tropicalia movement’ -Los Angeles Times
In celebration of this iconoclastic master of song, politics, satire
and human relations, Luaka Bop is releasing a vinyl-only box set,
Studies of Tom Zé: Explaining Things So I Can Confuse You
which pulls together for the first time a trilogy of “studies” on Brazilian
musical styles—Massive Hits, Estudando o Pagode, and Estudando
a Bossa. The latter two recordings have never been issued on vinyl
and the former has never been available in the US. This retrospective
collection from the first artist ever signed to Luaka Bop is limited
edition and hand numbered.
Cut in 180-gram vinyl, and in their complete original covers, the three-
record set also includes a live 45 of Zé’s legendary collaborative
tour with Tortoise, recorded at London’s Barbican in 2001. To
complete the retrospective treatment, Luaka Bop has added a CD
featuring a 1993 conversation between Tom Zé, David Byrne, and
Arto Lindsay, a 12-page booklet by noted Brazilian music scholar
Chris Dunn, a touch of day glow, lots of varnished paper, and a
modicum of cardboard with a splash of black. Comes with a code to
digitally download all vinyl content.

Artist: GonjasufiTitle: The Caliph’s Tea Party
NO EXPORTS
OverviewIt’s a tricky thing, re-working a completely unique and peerless piece of music. It is made even trickier when the personality behind the original music is so vivid and otherworldly that it is almost sure to continue to cast it’s long shadow over whatever new form is chosen for it. Of course, the questions of whether or not to remix Gonjasufi’s instant classic A Sufi & A Killer arose, but with that voice and those songs, it was never going to fail. It didn’t hurt that Gonja had made fans out of quite a few incredibly talented artists either.
So, The Caliph’s Tea Party was slowly summoned to life. Like the Caliphs of the Ummahs of the 7th century, orchestrating affairs from their palaces, Gonjasufi has assembled a collection of artists in his musical world and invited them to exchange ideas. In this spirit, the symbolic and musical centerpiece of the album, as well as its namesake, is the result of the mutual admiration formed between Gonjasufi and Broadcast and The Focus Group. A bewitching, drastic re-working of “DedNd” it takes the form of a suite of layered compositions and radiophonic transmissions.
Elsewhere, reinterpretations from new talents shine while established artists continue to surprise. Mark Pritchard (Harmonic313, Africa Hitech) channels Ennio Morricone with epic orchestral dystopia on his remix of “Ancestors” while retaining the inherent gravity of Flying Lotus’ original production. Young guns Shlomo and Jeremiah Jae eschew their labeling as “beatmakers” and tap into a fractured emotional core within “Change” and “Holidays”, respectively, giving them new leases on life as subtly mechanized melancho-lia. Bibio smooths out the rough edges of “Candylane” for a remix indebted to the 1980s R&B leftfield, while Brooklyn’s Bear In Heaven and Oneohtrix Point Never deal in heavy motorik meditations and ethereal musique concrete.
That The Caliph’s Tea Party lives up to it’s concept as a companion piece to A Sufi & A Killer is not only a sizeable accomplishment, but also a testament to the source material. Gonjasufi has emerged in 2010 as the most striking new voice in a vast musical landscape that continues to outrun true classification. With so many errant strands of creativity moving in all directions, it may well prove fortunate that a Caliph has been selected. NO EXPLICIT LANGUAGE

Hands
Dave Holland Pepe Habichuela
Through the streets of Wolverhampton, England and the jazz clubs of New York, the caves of Granada and the flamenco bars of Madrid. Over strings and oceans and language barriers, masterful jazz bassist Dave Holland and Spanish guitar legend Pepe Habichuela have come together with collaborative takes on tradi-tional and original compositions that allow Holland’s bass to sing with a new kind of soul.
When Holland met Habichuela, the acclaimed scion of a deep-rooted Gypsy family from Granada, it didn’t take long, however, for Holland to realize the depth of con-nection he felt with his new collaborator. Habichuela served as Holland’s teacher and guide through flamenco’s regional variations and multi-section structures.Holland also worked intensively to forge his own path, his own embrace of fla-menco’s distinct sound and spirit – finding it in unique places, in the emotional power of great flamenco vocalists.
Though unexpected, the upright bass proved perfect for echoing the dynamics and ornamentation of flamenco’s sometimes simple melodies. The glissandos and flowing trills that make flamenco lines what they are offered Holland intrigu-ing opportunities for improvisation, beyond the usual means of the solo. And in capturing the elegant embellishments of vocal lines, Holland provides a gracious foil to Habichuela’s practiced yet spitfire performances.

NOT ACTUAL ART WORK
449-A Trollingwood RoadHaw River NC 27258www.redeyeusa.com
Three years after they released their debut full length, The Austerity Program are back with not even twenty minutes of music – a four song EP. You are not us, their label, and so you have no idea how much this absolutely infuriates us. We have probably been on the phone with these guys averaging at least once a week over that time. “Guys, guys, we have invested a LOT of money in you, when are you going to come out with something?”
And they fucking promised us like a triple LP or something. And then, three goddam years later, we get this. That’s like, just over a song a year. And not a 45 minute, seven part epic song. These things are barely five minutes each. You could probably learn to play them over a long afternoon.
What the hell did we do? We run a record label – it’s not like we’re dumping toxic waste in playgrounds or laying off thousands of people who work in our factory or anything. This is small potatoes. So why the hell are we punished like this? And of course – of course – we’re suddenly expected to drop everything because now they’ve got a record release show lined up and “it’s very important that we have all formats available the night of the show.” It’s like, I …
I really don’t even know what to type I’m so angry about this. I just had to walk away from the computer and get a glass of water to calm down. This is ridiculous.
What does it sound like? You tell us, man. We haven’t even cracked open the reference copies because what’s the point? Any schedule we made about this thing died literally years ago. If it’s anything like their last record (and they claim that it is, but “so much better” – whatever, guys) it’ll have a drum machine and some guitars and bass and that one guy will be singing and can I just tell you how pissed I am that I am even stuck writing this thing? Promo materials for something that the band swore up and down was going to be huge and on time. I just want to get a red marker and write “D - , SEE ME” all over the CD copy they sent us and just mail it back to them. No, even better, I want to FED EX it back to them just to make it totally obvious how screwed up they are. Four songs. Just … it’s just astonishing that they really think this is their next record.
So, yeah, The Austerity Program finally took some of their precious time and now expect us to put their EP out. Screw this – I’m going to go work on reviewing the layout for the next Torche record or something.

Gasoline Silver is a three-piece combo from Minne-sota... GASOLINE SILVER is their debut LP-- 11 tracks of subterranean wordplay scored with electro-psych panoramas and biker-movie guitars.
Formed in 2009 in the Twin Cities, Gasoline Silver includes Ron Franklin (vocals, harp, guitar), Andy Hertel (drums), and Josh Misner (synthesizers). Prior to starting the band, Ron Franklin toured the U.S. and Europe with just a telecaster, a harmonica rack and a mess of feedback.
In 2007 and 2008, he released three full-length solo albums (RON FRANKLIN, CITY LIGHTS, and BLUE SHADOWS FALLING). These received radio rotation and critical acclaim, both in the States and Europe, including the NYC-area WFMU and Paris, France's Le Monde.

THE GURUS from Barcelona, Spain are a pop-rock power trio with their fourth album
on Rainbow Quartz. The first album was
a “Revolver”-esque slice of harmony and
jangle while the second album veered
towards a Kinks vibe with snippets of
Fripp and Eno soundscape psychedelia.
The third album blasted crunchy guitar
harmonics and terrific melodies that
evoked Yo La Tengo/Pixies/Wire or neo-
punk/grunge of Nirvana – but also touches
of peak-era R.E.M. and Beatles references.
The newest release, “Closing Circles”, is a
gripping blend of psychedelia, rock and pop.
This album is a further advance of their ongoing
evolution, and is perhaps their best album yet. Fans of
Rainbow Quartz will love this album!

They still show a love of straightforward rock’n’roll which has no room for irony. If you like bands in Bucketful of
Brains – like the Flamin’ Groovies, the Barracudas and all the power-pop ones... you might have a go with the Gurus.
Sounds XP
The anglophilia, the Beatles brush and pulsating psychedelia come together in a sound which gives the
guys more identity. They stop sounding like all their influences, and end up sounding like the Gurus.

“a cathartic, psychedelic journey into the deepest parts of Dustin Wong’s mind.” - Impose
Dustin Wong, like many of us, dove into the world of music and art as an unhappy youth looking to rebel against certain ideals and “absolute truths” that contrasted his own beliefs. A twisting path of punk discovery and a growing respect for sonic visionaries like Jimi Hendrix, Brian Wilson, John Fahey, and Brian Eno led Dustin to further pursue his muse. He eventually wound up at the Maryland Institute College of Art, where he met and co-founded the critically acclaimed band Ponytail. In addition to his film studies, Dustin was also a founding member of Ecstatic Sunshine, whose music hinted more at the direction he would eventually take in this his solo debut.
On August 18th 2009 the proposition of playing a solo show (August 18th, whose numerical meaning has since taken on a special meaning to Dustin as “a gleam of time between two eternities”) was set before him by a friend. Dustin didn’t have any material to perform, and had never before performed solo. Excited by the proposition, he sat down and started writing what would become the first 15 minutes of Infinite Love. Taking inspiration from something John Fahey once said, “I was playing guitar but I heard an orchestra in my head. So I was really composing for a full orchestra”, Dustin was deeply moved and inspired by this way of thinking about the creative process. It had a profound effect on his working with one instrument on many melodic and literal layers as well as emotional ones. Working with a simple assembly of pedals: an octave, distortion, loop, envelope filter, and a couple of delays, Dustin began to take this idea and make it his own. In most cases his compositions start with a simple repeating melody. Dustin slowly fills the space between each note with layered and looped guitar phrases, and continues to build on this pattern until his “orchestra” fully blooms. While the textures vary greatly, the sound never becomes a cacophony, but rather a delicate web-like base to suspend his various melodic lines from. The looped layers are then further manipulated via the pedals to have an evolving set of meter and timbres for the aural narrative. The only instrument apart from guitar is a sparingly used drum machine.
For Infinite Love (a reference to a psychedelic experience of Dustin’s), he wanted to focus on the potential of an actual album and the journey from beginning to end. This journey or musical process is increasingly being lost in the digital era, where often the focus is on tracks or collections of tracks. To highlight that journey, Infinite Love is presented as a double album, each with the same opening and different paths to the final codas. It is the listener’s choice which path to take. Dustin puts it thus, “In Infinite Love the listener gets two choices. I think of them as twins, a brother and a sister, living their lives, then reuniting.” The album will be available on both double LP and double CD, each with a bonus DVD. The LP version comes with an exclusive bonus EP entitled Indigo and Crystal. The DVD allows you to choose which musical path you’d like to have accompany the film, with the hope that the two different musical versions will change the experience of the movie. Dustin will be touring the US and Europe in the near future. It is quite something to behold the solo performance of so many intricate and complex layers. Those who have had the pleasure of experiencing the catharsis that is Ponytail live, will not be disappointed by this stunning display.

SALES POINTS
Stolen Stars Left for No One follows up White Hills self-titled Thrill Jockey debut released Feb 23, 2010 (Thrill 232)
Limited to only 1,000 copies this 12” is expected to sell out as quickly as all previous White Hills vinyl releases
The 12” has plain white labels and is housed in a white LP jacket with a paper wrap around cover and tracklist-ing inspired by the bootleg LPs of the 70s
White Hills have spent the year touring heavily, playing shows with Mudhoney, The Flaming Lips, Pontiak, and Pissed Jeans
The band will also be performing at this year’s ATP Fes-tivals in New York and London
The vinyl edition of White Hills (Thrill 232) sold out upon release. 2nd Pressing of 500 LPs now available!
Thrusting space rock into the 21st century and beyond, White Hills have not so much carved, but blasted out, their own niche of kraut-driven heaviness and soaring guitar acrobatics of the highest order. The band’s sonic catalogue is deep and highly sought after, every limited release selling out instantly and some recent releases going for as much as 200 dollars on venerable auction sites. Stolen Stars Left for No One is a limited edition 12” created for their upcoming tour and appearance at ATP.
Comprised of three new tracks, Stolen Stars Left for No One was recorded live with no overdubs. The 12” is an edition of 1,000 copies with art inspired by bootleg LPs of the 70’s. White labels and white jackets with a printed vintage paper wrap (we had to call many printers to find the old stock). All the tracks were recorded in the fall and winter of 2010 with drumming supplied by long-time collaborators Kid Millions, Antronhy, and Lee Hinshaw.
White Hills will be touring extensively this fall and playing shows with the likes of Mudhoney and The Flaming Lips.
Praise for White Hills :
“A label like “space-rock” deserves music that’s as nuanced and limitless-feeling as space, and space-rock deserves a band like White Hills. Not only do they add urgency to familiar psychedelic rock templates, but they pay just as close attention to the quiet moments as the raging ones-- each track on their self-titled Thrill Jockey debut displays a careful layering of sounds and atmospheres.” - Pitchfork
“White Hills - reminds me of the true spirit of rock and roll. Find a cosmic groove. Play loud. Kill your friends. Burn down your school. Merge with the infinite. Put simply, this is a gift for everyone interested in the destruction of life, municipal buildings and piss weak indie.” - The Quietus
“And so despite barely being able to stand it was time for one final push for the much anticipated White Hills. And boy was it worth it. An hour and a half of mindbending psychefuzz that had me melting down the walls of the Batcave. If you haven’t had the pleasure of this NY trio imagine The Black Angels being fucked really hard by early Monster Magnet. Every fibre of my body is aching, I’m wrecked, I’m insanely tired, everyone around me is swaying as everyone seems to have the first day extremely hard yet it all adds to the lyseric transendence. Absolutely brilliant and one of my bands of the festival. And the catsuit clad bass foxtress was a very handy focal point.” - Stonerrock.com “A perfect space-rock storm of drone, mind-melting psychedelia, overdriven guitars and heavy bass, White Hills is the rightful heir to Hawkwind’s massive legacy.” - Goldmine “[Dave W.] doesn’t play guitar so much as he wields his axe… In a sub-genre that habitually seems to teeter on the bland precipice between navel gazing and ostentatiious guitar wanking, it’s awesome to see a band that can be both intricate and exciting.” - Crawdaddy.com

ALLO DARLIN’ - Allo Darlin’ FORMAT - CD /LP LABEL - Fortuna POP! UPC - CD: 5060044170768 / LP: 5060044170843 CATALOG # - FPOP91CD / FPOP91LP LIST PRICE - CD $15.99 /LP $21.99 For Fans Of: Magnetic Fields, Camera Obscura, Hefner, Kimya Dawson, Jens Lekman, The Lucksmiths, The Wave Pictures. Allo Darlin' is the music of Australian-born, London-based songwriter Elizabeth Morris and runs the spectrum from joyous, breezy, punky, jump-around pop with fabulous harmonies to sparse ukulele and steel guitar heartbreak-ers. Elizabeth moved to London in 2005 and, inspired to write songs by her purchase of a ukulele from the famous Duke of Uke shop in Brick Lane, began to make music. A little later Elizabeth hooked up with Paul Rains (guitar), Bill Botting (bass) and Michael Collins (drums) and, augmented for one song by Terry Edwards of Tindersticks/Gallon Drunk fame on trumpet and sax, cut a single, “Henry Rollins Don't Dance”, released in Summer 2009 on the cult WeePOP label
JIMI JAMISON & JIM PETERIK— Extra Moments FORMAT - CD LABEL - Melodic Rock Records UPC - 5055300311351 CATALOG # - MRR001 LIST PRICE - CD: $17.99 Jimi Jamison teamed up with his former Survivor band mate Jim Peterik in 2007 to record a new solo album. That album was released via Frontiers Records in 2008 to high critical acclaim and fan praise. The guys spent a year writing material for Crossroads Moment and even with 15 tracks included, there were several more that didn't make the cut. Jimi Jamison appears with the very generous approval of Frontiers Records. Jimi and Jim both loved the idea I had of compiling the various tracks that didn't make the original al-bum for a stand-alone release. Adding to the value of this release is some addi-tional alternative takes and recording demos to round out a stunning 11-track release, showcasing the talent and chemistry of these much loved duo. The complete picture of Crossroads Moment is now available with the release of Extra Moment
PETER HAMMILL —Incoherence FORMAT - CD LABEL - FIE Static UPC - 5024545277326 CATALOG # - FIE9129CD LIST PRICE - CD: $15.99 This is a continuous 41 minute + piece Unlike anything else Peter Hammill has done be-fore, Incoherence seems to counterbalance the rela-tive simplicity of his previous studio outing, Clutch. A multi-tracked keyboard extravaganza, Incoher-ence consists of a single 42-minute suite in 14 movements. There are separate songs, but they are segued in ways that make the transitions unnoticeable, especially on first listen. That alone is enough to set the album apart from its neighbors in Hammill's discography, but there is more: a re-newed urge to experiment with forms and textures within the song format; a rare level of richness and complexity in the arrangements; and the overarching concept of incoher-ence, language, and miscommunication that ties all 14 songs into a single, highly convinc-ing whole.
PETER HAMMILL/SONIX —Unsung FORMAT - CD LABEL - FIE Static UPC - 5023522912427 CATALOG # - FIE9124CD LIST PRICE - CD: $15.99 'Unsung' contains experimental instrumental work of an unpredictable and uncategorisable nature. Just around the corner from comparative order and logic chaos waits.... As the title implies, the ab-sence of lyrics means that not even any clues are offered. Peter Hammill himself explains as best he can: "This is effectively the third in an originally unconscious series initiated with 'Loops and Reels' and continued with 'Sonix.' "The pieces presented here, though, individually and collectively, went self-deterministic on me at a certain point and seemed to wilfully declare that they refused be made into songs as such, insisting that they were complete as pieces in their own right and as a set of recordings.
Ninja Tune: 20 Years of Beats & Pieces is the latest in Black Dog Publishing’s popular Labels Unlimited series. To mark the 20th anniversary of this truly unique and groundbreaking record label, established by Coldcut’s Matt Black and Jonathan More, 20 Years of Beats & Pieces includes exclusive interviews with many of the key artists and label staff from Ninja Tune and its successful subsidaries including Big Dada and Counter.
Ninja Tune’s impressive roster of artists includes Coldcut, DJ Food, Roots Manuva Amon Tobin, Mr Scruff, Cinematic Orchestra, Bonobo, The Bug, The Heavy, Speech Debelle, The Herbaliser, Spank Rock, Diplo, Daedelus, DJ Vadim, Funki Porcini, Kid Koala, Ty and Wiley. 20 Years of Beats & Pieces is lavishly illustrated with original photographs and illustrations plundered from the deepest depths of Ninja Tune and their artist archives.
20 Years of Beats & Pieces is a stylish and exhaustive survey telling the story of the record label, the artists themselves, their art and the ways in which their influence was and still is felt in larger culture. A truly inspirational tale, beginning with Black and More crossing paths in the mid-80s and going on to form the chart topping Coldcut. When touring Japan 20 years ago, they grew tired of how their staid, uncomprehending major label was manipulating the group and they had the vision and drive to break free and set up Ninja Tune—a label that remains as innovative today as it was then.
• Published by Black Dog.
• An ecclectic and colourful volume, 20 Years of Beats & Pieces is an indispensable book for anyone with an interest in electronic music, independent labels and the music industry.
