10 Steps to Manage Your

Facebook Profile

48% of social media users say they experience some level of

difficulty managing privacy controls on their profiles.

If Facebook were a country, it would be the third largest. This means that if you have the wrong privacy settings, almost anyone in the world could access your private information. What’s worse is 48 percent of social media users say they experience some level of difficulty managing privacy controls on their profiles. Use the 10 instructions below to be more selective about who can see your information and to protect your privacy.

1. On your profile, select About and then click Edit for each section (e.g., Work and Education, Living, Basic Information). On the highlighted dropdown menu, the default is Public (anyone can see your information). It’s best to select Friends, so only your Facebook friends will be able to see your information. When you are finished with each section, select Done Editing.

2. In the upper right corner of your Facebook profile, select the padlock icon—a shortcut to privacy settings. The menu has several privacy setting questions. Select See More Settings.

3. Once on the Privacy Settings and Tools page, you can see on the left menu a list of other settings that can be changed—we will review Privacy, Timeline and Tagging, and Mobile settings.

4. The Privacy Settings and Tools page asks you two simple questions: Who can see my stuff? And who can look me up? Take the time to review and edit each setting.

5. Let’s look a little more closely at the “Review all your posts and things you’re tagged in section.” Select Use Activity Log.

6. In the Activity Log you can edit who can see what you post, what others post on your timeline/profile or if someone tags you in a photo or post. By selecting the edit button, you can choose to highlight the post on your timeline (makes it larger and more prominent), keep it on your timeline or hide it from your timeline. If it is your post or a post by a page you manage, you can change the location and date. In this example, Jessica was tagged in a photo. If you do not want your name tagged in a photo, this is one way to remove the tag.

7. In this example, Jessica was tagged by EMC Insurance Companies, which is public because EMC’s settings are to share with the public. If you do not want your name tagged in the photo, you can remove the tag by selecting the globe icon, and then choose Report/Remove Tag.

8. Select the padlock icon on the top right again to go back to the Settings page (see instruction 2). 9. On the left menu are the Timeline and Tagging Settings. These settings allow you to limit who can tag you in photos or post on your profile/timeline.

If you choose to review tags before they are posted, you can find them in the Activity Log. Timeline Review shows you all the posts you’re tagged in and allows you to approve or remove the tag.

10. Select the padlock icon on the top right again to go back to the Settings page (see instruction 2) to review Mobile Settings.

In Mobile Settings, you can add your mobile phone number for security purposes. If there is unusual activity on your account, Facebook will lock your account online and send you a text message confirmation code to reset your password. Note: Make sure you edit the Contact Information section on the About page, and select Friends or Only Me in the Mobile Phones section.
