Angelika Loderer and Alessa Esteban Kairo mit Alessa Esteban (ONLINE ARTICLE)

    Performance, Video and Photodocumentary, 2009

In this provocative work partly inspired by Francis Alyss Re-enactments in which the artist walks through Mexico

City carrying a gun pointed at the ground until he is arrested, Angelika Loderer and Alessa Esteban walk through

Cairo wearing mini skirts and carrying comical weapons, a boxing glove and a garden fork, playfully inciting a

public critique of a city that for the past half-decade has been known infamously for its maltreatment of women.

An October, 2009, Womens News Network article states that Being an Egyptian woman is to accept sexual

harassment as daily routine, according to a recent report from the Egyptian Center for Womens Rights (ECWR).

The study outlines, 60 percent of Egyptian women and 98 percent of foreign women are harassed on a daily

    basis.

By yelling at the Cairo men, clicking their tongues at them, and harassing them in ways only women would

normally be: hey i like you! whats your name? chicka!, Loderer and Esteban magnified that percentage,

supplanting their fear in their weaponry, and incited a gathering for their satiric protest just as street performerswould for tourists. Loderer states that by the high peak of the performance the guys were crowding around us,

kind of forming a circle and starting to harass us verbally, and taking pictures under our skirts with cell phone

    cameras.

In an environment marked by its inequality towards women this Feminist performance is a walk in the lions den.And in the spirit of performance work by artists such as Valie Export (a native Austrian artist like Loderer) and

Francis Alys (a Mexico City resident, Estabans birthplace as well,) this act sheds necessary light, in an age of

diffident art practices, on a history of political and Feminist performance, both genres of art that have become

increasingly withdrawn over the last 40 years.
