Community Involvement Requested

Speak up for a new bus route on 43rd Street linking Alverno to the North Side and the South Side Do you know students who don't own a car? Would you like to make it easier for people to get to and from school, and get around town? The Milwaukee County Transit System is considering creating a new bus line that would give them direct access to Miller Park Way and connections to Greenfield, National, Wisconsin, and North Avenues to the north, and potentially the 43rd& Loomis Park and Ride to the south. More than that, two other routes serving Alverno are slated to possibly be designated "high frequency" routes that would slash wait times. This is a rare opportunity to add a route to Alverno, in fact it is the only new route that is being considered in this major once-in-a-generation re-design of the system, but it is not a done deal by any means. Opposition to public transportation on 43rd St. has been voiced by residents who fear "the wrong element" coming through the Jackson Park neighborhood. We would like our students from the North Side and the South Side to have greater access to our neighborhood. Your voice of support for Alverno's students will make it more likely that this route serving Alverno will come to fruition. Constituent voices are extremely important in these local decisions. Please add your voice -- decision-makers remark upon the difference that you make. There is are public input meetings at:

NORTH SIDE: Thursday, November 29, 5 – 7 p.m. Silver Spring Neighborhood Center 5460 N 64th Street Milwaukee, WI 53218 SOUTH SIDE: Tuesday, December 4, 5 – 7 p.m. American Serb Hall 5101 W Oklahoma Ave Milwaukee, WI 53219 EAST SIDE: Thursday, December 6, 4 – 7 p.m. Brady Street Firehouse 1693 N. This action research analyzed whether the implementation of a student accountability system and self-efficacy skills would increase academic success. My objective for my action research was to change my students’ internal thinking. I wanted them to see and feel their self-worth and utilize that as a motivating factor in their academic success. My intention was to shift their perspective of what they are capable of in order for them to succeed while promoting an environment in the classroom that fosters independence.

Danielle Wright Third Grade Teacher MA in Education Social and Emotional Learning and Positive Performance

Through this research I sought to find a connection between social and emotional learning and student positive performance. The Second Step curriculum was implemented in order gain insight on how social and emotional learning can improve the way students handle the pressure of testing as well as their classroom behavior. This study found that students react differently to incorporating social and emotional learning into their lives depending their environment overall self-awareness in regards to their behavior.

Lea K. Bell Kindergarten Teacher M.A. in Education Teacher Dispositions toward Multicultural Education

For my research, I wanted to see how creating a list of multicultural strategies for the classroom with white teachers from majority white schools would impact their dispositions about multicultural education. I am hoping that through this process, the participants will be more open to incorporating multicultural education in their classrooms and will use the strategies list created as a starting point to do so. I chose to conduct this research because I am looking to increase the cultural competency of students in majority white schools through multicultural education. I felt that educating teachers was the first step to try and accomplish this goal.

Jean Krattley First Grade Teacher MA Education Cognitively Guided Instruction in First Grade

My action research was to see if first graders would demonstrate stronger number sense if Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) was incorporated into the math instruction. I found that through daily CGI questioning, students were developmentally gaining the ability to use numbers fluidly and flexibly. By using the CGI framework to guide and encourage students to utilize higher level strategy types and promote collaboration of mathematical thinking, first graders showed a drastic increase in their mathematical reasoning skills.

American Psychological Association Conference

The 2019 APA conference will be held in Chicago in August! If you are interested in attending, you can start making plans now. This is going to be a great opportunity since it will be so close to Milwaukee! If you are interested in submitting a topic for a roundtable discussion or collaborating on a poster please contact Rachel. Keep it in mind when making plans for next summer! There are often opportunities for student members to volunteer, and student rates for this conference have been reasonable in the past.

Mental Health Summit

An Alverno Mental Health Summit will be held in September 2019. A tentative topic is to discuss self-harm behaviors. If you would like to be involved in planning the event in some capacity, please contact Rachel at [email protected]. All students are invited to participate, regardless of levels of training or experience in that specific area. All students will be able to attend the event on a weekend college day!

Get to Know the MCP Faculty

Five questions to get to know the MCP instructors a little better! Suggestions for future questions are always welcome. This week’s faculty member: Megan Schiferl

1. What would you say is your clinical specialty? Dialectical Behavior Therapy (treating emotion disregulation issues for ages 14+)

2. How did you get into community psychology? I was drawn to Alverno because it was drastically different than my undergrad experience (Land grant, state run, ag based university in South Dakota). I've also always been a contextual thinker, so systems based approaches have made the most sense to me.

3. What do you like to do outside of work? Outside of work, my husband and I love hiking with our dog Millie (she's adorable). I also enjoy sewing, reading, riding horses (my horse is adorable as well), baking and cooking.

4. What is one of your goals right now? I'm working on decluttering as a personal goal and Millie and I are signed up for some obedience classes to hopefully get her certified to visit hospitals and nursing homes.

5. Favorite ice cream? Lactose-intolerance, so chocolate anything without dairy!
