Continuous ImPRovement

2 1Go to Table of Contents à

As evidenced by the vast array of construction equipment and numerous

construction crews, continuous improvement is alive and well at Alverno

College. In fact, the entire Alverno community — from first-year

students to veteran alums — is excited and incredibly grateful for the

improvements resulting from the $30 million Promise & Power capital

campaign. We've already begun to experience the benefits with the

recent completion of several high-profile campus areas, including La

Verna Commons, Student Services Main Street and the Library.

But where continuous improvement at Alverno has always been apparent

and incredibly beautiful to witness is through the lives of thousands of

undergraduate women and graduate women and men who study at

Alverno. The College focuses its collective energy and academic prowess

on equipping students with the knowledge and confidence to reach

their very greatest potential. Enriching not just their own personal and

professional lives, but also the communities in which they live and work.

Although construction is still ongoing, continuous improvement won't

end once the improvement project is complete next spring. Quite the

opposite, in fact! The new campus spaces will create the necessary space

to provide the very best in active, engaged learning, ensuring future

generations of Alverno graduates will receive the academic riches of

those who came before them.

From the presIdentDear Readers,

As is true every year at Alverno, this past one

flew by. From greeting new students at the

beginning of the academic year to offering

congratulations and Godspeed to those who

graduated at the year's end, the Alverno

community had much to celebrate in the

lives of our students. You can read about the

inspiring stories of just a few of our students

in this annual report. Their accomplishments

give us all such pride and joy, and we are so

grateful for the opportunity to accompany

them on their journey. And it is because of

these students and all future students that we

embarked on the most extensive construction

project in more than 50 years. We simply

wanted to provide the best possible learning

environment because these women deserve

nothing less.

If you have not visited campus in the past

few months, I invite you to come and visit the

brand new spaces and the enhanced spaces

from the past. From the upgrades to the

library to the expanded commons, you will

see evidence that we practice what we teach.

The abilities are alive and well even in the

design of our space. To highlight our abilities,

you will see that there is a wall that lists every

one of our eight foundational abilities. You

will see inspiring quotes and photos from the

past and present where the 8 Abilities—from

Social Interaction to Developing a Global

Perspective—are found in the faces of

countless former and current Alverno students.

There is even a dedicated space for our

community to place donations, from books to

food. Never doubt that the Franciscan call to

service is alive and flourishing in our students!

From our Catholic, Franciscan heritage we

often reflect on the beauty of God's creation.

While often that reflection is on the sacredness

of human life and Francis' love of animals,

it is impossible during times of construction

not to think about the power and beauty of

all creation. From new sustainable building

materials to the restoration of terrazzo floors

from the 1950s, attention was given to our

commitment to respect and honor all of

creation. I think St. Francis would be proud!

The Promise & Power capital campaign is

nearing completion. I never once doubted

we could accomplish this bold goal because

I know the generous hearts of the Alverno

community and those of our many friends.

The School Sisters are a powerhouse of

prayer and encouragement, and the Board

of Trustees personally contributed more than

$12 million toward our goal of $30 million.

Faculty, staff and students all pitched in, but

I am especially grateful to our alumnae who

have collectively contributed more in this

campaign than in all previous campaigns

combined. When we ended the year in June,

we only needed to raise $1.85 million. This

campaign ends in December and, once

again, I have faith in the Alverno community

to take this campaign over our $30 million

goal. From the lips of our founders we take

encouragement: "Impossible is a word I do

not know." The Alverno community lives

those words each and every day.

With my deepest gratitude,

Pushing forward, testing limits, growing and improving

in new and better ways. That spirit is alive at Alverno

College and has burned brightly for more than 125

years. We’ve always known that an Alverno education

is a transformational one, and that’s evident in the

tremendous growth demonstrated by our students

during their time here: Alverno students aren’t satisfied

with the status quo. But it’s also true of Alverno as an

institution. Alverno has always been an innovator, and our

dedication to continuous improvement is one reason why

Alverno remains a leader in Catholic education.

And now our physical home is evolving, too, with the

biggest campus improvement project since the current

campus was built in the 1950s. First came the vital

support from our alumnae and donors who recognized

that a change was long overdue, followed by months

of construction equipment rumbling as crews worked

feverishly to complete Phase 1 of the multi-phase project.

Change isn’t always easy, but our students will be the first

to tell you that the reward is worth it. Read on to discover

how several students embody continuous improvement

and what continuous improvement has meant at Alverno

this past year — and what new progress is in store.

Continuous Improvement in Action

Alverno students saw significant campus improvements when they

returned for the fall 2014 semester. The dramatic transformation —

as evidenced by this collection of construction photos — was the

result of hard-working construction crews and Alverno employees

who were committed to the timely completion of the first phase of

the campus improvement project.

La Verna Commons: the new Crossroads of Campus

ask any student. The campus space that elicits the

loudest and most enthusiastic reaction — and was

actually named by students — is the new La Verna

Commons, named for the mountain in Italy where

St. Francis would retreat and reflect.

“It’s the crossroads for the campus,” says Scott

Ramlow of Uihlein/Wilson Architects, the firm that

designed the project.

With seating for more than 500 people, the

Commons has doubled in size and provides

significantly more meeting space. Instead of

student organizations fitting into corners here and

there, students finally have a dedicated space just

for them.

“It extends our hospitality and our hope and goal for

community building,” says Sister Marlene Neises,

SSSF, H'99, associate vice president for Academic

Services.

The transformation is evident as soon as visitors

step through the new Commons lobby, which

offers space for student-organized events and a

central posting area where students can advertise

everything from club events to tutoring services.

The lobby is also home to the new Service Learning

Center, which provides a much-needed central

gathering spot for food drives and other charitable

collections, elevating the visibility of Alverno’s

many service activities.

“Being good citizens and sharing with others in

need is a part of who Alverno is,” Neises says.

“But our collection area before was scattered, so

it was hard to know if there was a drive and who

was sponsoring it or what it was for. Now it’s more

inviting and obvious.”

Before the campus improvement project, the

Commons was so crammed during peak hours

that many students often ate in their cars or left

campus in search of other lunch venues. Now the

expanded Hudson’s servery — named after and

made possible by Kathy H'14 and Robert Hudson

— allows for more food options and faster service,

and ample space for students, faculty and staff to

dine together.

But there’s more than just tables to entice students

to stay on campus. A stage hosts programming that

was previously limited to The Mug in Austin Hall,

giving campus entertainment a wider audience.

Three 20-person group study rooms give students

more space for meetings and tutoring. The Loft —

made possible by Peter and Joan Bruce — which

overlooks the main seating area, features soft

seating and a fireplace — creating a cozy nook for

studying in between classes.

“one goal with the campus improvement project

was to create several mini-spots where students

could sit by themselves or with small groups to

meet for projects or just catch up,” neises says.

“abilities like Communication and social Interaction

involve students collaborating in and outside of

the classroom, so we need to provide space for

students to get together.”

The nearby Inferno Café — also named by students

and made possible by Food Services, Inc. — offers

another option. With its coffee shop-style eating for

around 50 people and WiFi, it’s a convenient and

comfortable place for students and faculty to fuel

up on caffeine between classes. A glass wall allows

passers-by to see the latest apparel styles at the

A-Store.

In addition, leaders of student organizations have

a dedicated space to plan activities and store club

materials in the new office of the Department of

Student Activities & Leadership. It all adds up to a

place that invites students and staff to connect and

check in.

“The Commons is a space where you can get food, you

can hang out, you can meet friends,” Neises says. “It’s

a central spot to see what’s happening on campus.”

And thanks to the new improvements, there’s more

happening than ever before.

senior Yesica Camacho isn’t just dedicated to

improving herself — she’s also committed to

improving the lives of others. Camacho is the

founding president of Alverno’s chapter of the

League of United Latin American Citizens, a

national organization focused on social justice

and advocacy.

“We strive to empower Latinos in the areas

of education, employment, health and

leadership,” she says. “I want to bring

awareness to a lot of issues that not everybody

knows about.” That inspired Camacho to plan

a roundtable discussion on immigrant children

who are crossing the U.S.-Mexico border and

another event on the difficulties faced by

undocumented college students.

The new student organization is just one

of the ways that Camacho, a Professional

Communication major, has made her mark

on campus. She’s also vice president of the

World Languages Club and previously served

as vice president and Mass coordinator for

Hispanic Women of Alverno. She belongs to

the Association for Women in Communication,

wrote for the Alverno Alpha student

newspaper, and volunteered as an event

planner for the Muslim Student Association,

even though she’s not Muslim.

Camacho was always active in high school, too.

“But I was very shy about it. Since Alverno, I

feel like that’s who I am now — a leader,” she

says. “I went from being a member in a club

all the way to starting my own organization,

and along the way, I grew my self-confidence.

Knowing that people trust me and believe in

me really makes me feel proud and like I’ve

come a long way.”

Jennifer Flamboe, an assistant professor of

Spanish who has taught Camacho in several

interpreting classes, has watched her grow.

“What is most notable about yesica’s

development is her ability to excel in a

leadership role,” says flamboe, who also

advises the League of united Latin american

Citizens chapter. “When I first met her, she

would repeatedly say that she prefers to

work alone rather than in groups because

of her ability to control the quality of work

produced — she’s a perfectionist. however,

as she matured, she began to emerge as a

leader because of her ability to visualize and

articulate her thoughts.”

Camacho’s experience on the student

newspaper strengthened her writing, while her

public speaking skills blossomed.

“At first I was really nervous and shy about

standing up in front of a classroom and giving

a presentation. I used to be so scared,” she

recalls. But the nerves faded with more practice

and last semester, she smoothly delivered a

presentation on health care interpreting to 30

graduate students from another university — a

feat she never would’ve imagined before.

Those expanded skills will serve Camacho well

as she works toward her long-term goal of one

day owning her own communications firm. And

those who know her have no doubt she’ll reach

her goals.

“Yesica has a certain vision about her future that

motivates her to forge ahead,” Flamboe says.

“She’s a go-getter with a strong sense of who

she is and what she has to offer.”

Discovering the leader inside

ß Return to Table of Contents

for decades, Alverno made do with the space it

had. Admissions resided in two separate offices on

the second floor of the Liberal Arts building and

lacked the space for counselors to meet privately with

prospective students and their parents. Other offices

that also offered critical students services — such

as the Student Affairs and Internship offices — were

difficult to find.

It wasn’t ideal for students, but that’s now changed

with the new "main street" concept.

Intentionally designed to better serve the needs

of current and prospective students, the entire first

floor of Founders Hall is now Student Services Main

Street. The area, appropriately coined "Bella Way"

thanks to a generous donation from Filippa DiBella

Weber '92, houses all of the essential student-

facing departments. As a result, academic advisors

no longer need to draw a map for students to find

their next stop because the offices of Admissions,

Financial Aid, Registrar, Internship, Career Services

and International & Intercultural Center are all Main

Street neighbors.

“We want to provide a central place for getting

done the business of being a student, whether

that’s for a prospective student or current

student,” says Kate Lundeen, vice president for

enrollment services.

“Knowing our students

lead really full lives, our

goal was to help them

easily navigate everything

they need, so their

primary focus is on the

work in the classroom.”

Whereas lockers — resembling a 1950s high school —

previously filled both sides of the dark, first floor

hallway, windows now fill the corridor with natural

light. Offices that were behind closed doors are now

open to the world through walls of glass, reflecting

Alverno’s mission while making the offices more

welcoming to students who are passing by. The high-

traffic location serves as a daily reminder to students of

all the services available.

The convenience starts as soon as a student visits

campus for the first time.

“We’re incredibly excited that Admissions is on Main

Street,” Lundeen says. “We’re much easier to find, and

students have immediate access to the heart of campus.”

Previously, visiting families discussed finances and other

personal topics in an exposed cubicle setting. Now, the

Admissions Office includes three meeting rooms.

“It was important to access more private meeting

space for students and families,” Lundeen says. “The

learning experience at Alverno is so individualized and

personal, and we want to make sure that experience

starts in Admissions.”

Making the college admissions process more

seamless and user friendly is all the more vital,

considering that 70 percent of Alverno students

are the first in their families to attend college. The

Business Office, which processes student payments,

has also combined with the Financial Aid Office to

make life simpler for students.

“So much of it is just about updating campus,” Lundeen

says. “Students were coming to get this innovative,

21st-century education in a space that didn’t always

reflect that.”

Main Street visitors are also greeted to the Abilities

Wall: a tribute to the 8 Abilities that explains the

concept and uses eight columns to highlight the core

abilities. It’s an important reminder of the foundational

qualities of an Alverno education. Says Lundeen:

“It allows us to live in and among the foundation of

Alverno’s curriculum.”

after four years teaching English and journalism

at an alternative high school on Milwaukee’s north

side, Amanda Gentine '03, '13 hit the road: from

substitute teaching in Chicago to teaching English

to adults at a language school in Paris, France to

advising a government-sponsored school reform

project in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

But after eight years away, Gentine felt a pull

home to Wisconsin and Alverno, where she

completed her post-baccalaureate teaching

licensure program. She decided to return to

Alverno for her master’s degree in curriculum

and instruction.

“I had served in an administrative role overseas,

but I knew I wouldn’t be able to do that work

in the States without a master’s and the proper

licensure,” she explains. “And I loved my program

at Alverno so I knew I wanted to go back.”

Gentine’s resume includes degrees from other

prestigious institutions: She earned her bachelor’s

degree in English at Notre Dame University and a

master’s degree in postcolonial African literature

at the Sorbonne in Paris. But her time at Alverno

was different, she says.

“the biggest difference was what I really

learned to do and what I retained,” gentine

says. “alverno did such a great job of making

everything relevant. you actually do and you

practice and you perform, and it’s all tied

to what you’ll need to be doing when you

finish that program, with practical, real-world

scenarios.”

Gentine’s dedication was evident to William

Hughes, director of Alverno’s School and

Instructional Leadership Program. “She’s very

focused intrinsically on learning as much as she

can,” Hughes says. “She has a very strong sense

of social justice, especially for kids in poverty, and

she wanted to devote her full work and attention

to that. During her graduate program, she was

really intent on serving kids in need and zeroing

in on how to change instruction to better serve

those kids.”

Gentine graduated last December and was soon

hired as a consultant at Carmen High School of

Science and Technology, a Milwaukee charter

school where she had also done her research

project and practicum work.

Carmen instantly felt like home. Founded by

fellow Alverno alumna Patricia Hoben '04, Carmen

modeled its curriculum after Alverno’s 8 Abilities,

but Hoben needed Gentine’s help.

“As they’ve had new hires who aren’t as familiar

with Alverno’s approach, the abilities got watered

down and weren’t used consistently,” Gentine

says. “Dr. Hoben asked me to map out what we

have, see what we’re missing and figure out how

we’re going to bring the abilities back to life.”

This summer, Gentine began a new role as

district director of curriculum and assessment

for Carmen’s two campuses. After her time at

Alverno, she was eager to strengthen Carmen’s

ties to an abilities-based curriculum.

“Once you experience that model, you can’t go

back to doing it the traditional way because you

just know it isn’t as effective,” she says.

But Gentine looks for inspiration beyond her

alma mater. She’s passionate about professional

development and training opportunities, and she

reaches out to organizations such as Uncommon

Schools in New York to get advice and new ideas.

“We never stop learning, we never stop growing,

and that’s something I’ve always loved about

working in education,” she says. “There’s always

room for us to do better.”

A deep commitment to the abIlItIes

nestled just off of La Verna Commons is an

outside oasis of sorts, with trees, shrubs, a water

feature, and tables and chairs. Scott Ramlow of

Uihlein/Wilson Architects, the firm that designed

the project, describes it as a “pocket park.” But

the most important feature of Heritage Plaza:

the names of 255 School Sisters of St. Francis

who have worked at Alverno since the move to

its present site in 1953. The space was made

possible by generous donors who gave it in

honor of the School Sisters of St. Francis, Class

of 1954.

“The Franciscan approach to life is that God

calls us each by name; God knows us each

individually, so names are important to us,” says

Sister Kathleen O’Brien, SSSF, ’67, senior vice

president for Academic Affairs. “Heritage Plaza

commemorates and names

each Sister who brought

her gifts and talents to

Alverno, in this particular

place between 39th and

43rd streets. We give

thanks, by name, not to

gain personal recognition,

but rather to mark the names of those who have

made an indelible impact on each of us. Because

the Sisters named here worked on behalf of

all the School Sisters around the world, it is a

witness to the importance of Alverno to the

ministry of the School Sisters.”

Among the names are well-known former

faculty such as Sister Laura Lampe (also known

as Sister Laudesia), Sister Helena Steffensmeier,

Sister Georgine Loacker, Sister Mary Nemmer

(also known as Sister William) and others. The

wall includes not only the Sisters who taught

students, but also ones who worked in Alverno’s

offices, cooked in the kitchen, and supported the

College in other ways. The wall focuses on Sisters

affiliated with the current campus — from 1953

to the present — because the archives on prior

years weren’t always complete, O’Brien notes.

Like the chapel, Heritage Plaza offers a place to

quietly reflect on Alverno’s Franciscan tradition.

“People have always said to me when they

come to the chapel that they are so impressed

with its simple beauty, and I think the elegance

of the new wall is another example of the

simplicity of the franciscan spirit and its

aesthetic,” o’Brien says. “having the wall

outside in a park-like atmosphere is very

compatible with franciscan values.”

It provides an idyllic setting for students to

dine outdoors or just sit and relax between

classes. Inside the Commons, a wall of windows

overlooks the plaza so students don’t even need

to go outside to appreciate the view. “If you’re

sitting by that wall, you’ll feel like you’re outside

in Heritage Plaza,” Ramlow says.

Heritage Plaza makes campus even more

beautiful, not only through its landscaping, but

also through the memory of the women it honors.

mba student Michael Bond knew almost

immediately that Alverno would be a little

different, and not just because he was one of four

men in a cohort of 22 students. “I knew I was

onto something during my first class when they

dropped us into the middle of a financial report

and we had to analyze a company, figure out why

the company was performing the way it was, and

develop recommendations on our own,” says Bond,

who is the supplier diversity manager for Snap-on

Incorporated in Kenosha, Wis.

Bond reviewed the 10K report of a Fortune 500

company for his class, and when he had questions,

he checked in with Snap-on’s comptroller who

was impressed by the assignment. Bond also

questioned another colleague. “He had just

completed an MBA at another college, and I

wanted to confirm my analysis of what drove the

company’s DuPont ROI. And he really didn’t know

because he hadn’t conducted that type of in-depth

analysis regarding what actually drove a number.”

It was more evidence that Bond had made the

right college choice. Although he considered other

local MBA programs, he was intrigued by Alverno’s

abilities-based curriculum because he loves to put

what he’s learned into action.

“Every time I go into class, I try to come in with a

question from my job,” Bond says. “And every time

I leave class, I try to think about how I can apply an

assignment to my work.”

Linda Olszewski '98, '08, assistant professor in the

School of Business, says Bond’s thought-provoking

questions and perspective always enrich classroom

discussions.

“the thing that stands out most for me is how

he really progressed throughout the semester

in confidence, in knowledge, in contributions,

because he had such valuable contributions to

share with his classmates about what he was

learning and how he was applying that to his

work,” olszewski says. “I’m so grateful for that

because it just deepens the learning environment

and makes it come to life.”

Bond says the skills he’s learning at Alverno have

helped him be more effective in his position.

As supplier diversity manager, he works with small

businesses, and his classroom experiences give

him important insights into the small business

owner’s world.

“For my first class, we had to develop a business

plan for a new company, and I now have a better

understanding of where small business owners are

coming from,” he says. “My second class gave me

the knowledge and background to conduct a cash

flow analysis so I can assist small businesses if they’re

having problems. I now proactively inquire about their

inventory, instead of waiting for a problem to arise.

We had a situation just a couple of weeks ago where

the supplier was sitting on an excessive amount of

inventory, so I asked if our product managers could

have a sales promotion so we could clear the supplier’s

inventory. I never would’ve thought about that before.”

Bond’s MBA classes have improved his work in other

ways as well. “I’m preparing more in-depth reports,”

he says. “From a financial standpoint, I know how to

analyze and identify what drives the numbers. I now

have a better command of my position because of the

skills I have acquired.”

before, the library’s entrance seemed like a mile-

long hallway in which it was easy to forget that

the outside world existed. Now, the second floor

of Founders Hall is open and inviting, bringing

together Alverno’s curriculum and facilities for the

first time in a new nerve center for student learning.

“When the library was built in the 1950s, there

was nothing like the Internet. The books were

the brand, and you had

everything bolted in place

because who would ever

want to move furniture

around? It was built for a

time when print was king,

and the libraries were the

only game in town if you

wanted to do research,” says Lawrence Duerr,

director of the Library. “Now, of course, we have

the explosion of information online. So how do

we take something that was invented to support

students in 1956 and make it amenable to students

in 2014 and beyond?”

The answer: a space that breaks out of the

traditional library mold. “Collections shrink, but

amenities need to grow,” says project architect

Scott Ramlow of Uihlein/Wilson Architects.

The renovated library reflects Alverno’s emphasis

on the 8 Abilities and collaborative learning.

Former office space was converted into four

small-group study areas that feature moveable,

soft seating and wireless networking so students

can collaborate on group work and practice

presentations. These group study rooms were

made possible by the Greater Milwaukee

Foundation's Robert F. and Jean E. Holtz Fund and

Walter and Olive Steimke Fund.

Instead of security gates sealing off the outer

edge of the library, the gates moved to just

outside the Reading Room. That helps make the

overall space more welcoming and underscores

the message that “knowledge belongs to all,”

Ramlow says.

Inside the Reading Room, brighter overhead

lighting and improved acoustics enhance the

visitor experience. A glass partition, created by

former Alverno Art Professor Tom Hovorka, forms

a space within the Reading Room where students

can experiment with digital projects, Duerr says.

“I think it’s going to be even more of an

attraction for students to use the library, and

it’s going to hopefully maintain and increase

our relevance on campus,” Duerr says of the

renovations. “We’re making it a destination

space on campus.”

The new Daniel M. Soref Science and Mathematics

Learning Resource Center next to the Reading

Room offers a dedicated space for walk-in

tutoring services. The new space unites what had

previously been two separate centers and allows

for additional computers and group work space.

“We’ve designed the space so students are able to

work together in different ways,” says Lisa Degen,

the Center’s coordinator. “It really does suit the

curriculum well because so many courses have

collaborative projects.”

Similar to other new campus spaces, the Library

Revealing her true potentIal

growing up in Racine, Wis., Lexi Sweetman '14,

was always intrigued by science and had her eye

on pharmacy school. But then came high school

chemistry, and she struggled to get Cs and Ds.

“I didn’t think I had a chance,” she remembers.

Her high school teachers nudged her toward

nursing instead, and that was Sweetman’s plan

when she arrived at Alverno. She soon declared a

minor in Chemistry, thinking that she’d pursue

nurse anesthesiology.

Once at Alverno, Sweetman began to thrive.

“After a few chemistry courses at Alverno and a little

positive feedback and encouragement, Lexi started

to see her own potential in a field that had always

attracted her,” says Heather Mernitz, associate

professor of Physical Science. “Her academic

work wasn’t always perfect, but she was engaged

and enthusiastic and she always learned from her

performances and used instructor feedback to

continuously develop and improve.”

By the time Sweetman began her introductory

clinical nursing classes, she realized her true passion

was organic chemistry. “I really love the chemistry

of the human body and how pharmaceutical

drugs work in the body, like how taking aspirin can

prevent a heart attack,” she says. “That fascinates

me, how something so simple can have such a

profound effect on the body.”

She switched her major to Chemistry with a

Biology support and signed up for the toughest

science courses. To deepen her knowledge of

pharmaceutical chemistry, she took on independent

study projects and continued to work on them even

after graduation.

She also sought a research internship at the

Medical College of Wisconsin, where she interned

in a cell biology lab.

“At first a lot of people questioned why I was doing

a biology-based internship when I’m a Chemistry

major. But I found the chemistry in it, and I really

enjoyed it,” Sweetman says.

Sweetman, who was content to stay on the sidelines

in high school, discovered a new side of herself

outside of the classroom, too. She served as the

founder and president of Alverno College Loves

Animals, as vice president of Pre-Professional

Women of Alverno and as treasurer of the Student

Nurses Association. She also tutored at the Science

Resource Center and worked as a lab assistant in

the chemistry lab.

“When I first started at Alverno, I didn’t do much,

and I ate lunch in my car. But then I started joining

groups, getting involved, and taking risks,” she

says. “I started expecting to get involved and

be a part of things. It’s helped me become more

outgoing, and it’s definitely giving me a lot of

new opportunities that wouldn’t have happened

otherwise.”

Alverno’s Division of Natural Sciences, Mathematics

and Technology awarded Sweetman the Leona

Truchan Award for her leadership and contributions to

the Alverno science and math community. Her hard

work also paid off at her job at Walgreens, where she

was promoted to pharmacy technician. And she had

her pick of pharmacy schools, selecting the Rosalind

Franklin University of Medicine and Science, where

she received the Dean’s Commitment to the Future

of Pharmacy scholarship. She is slated to receive her

doctor of pharmacy degree in 2018.

“Lexi always had the potential, but she needed a

little nudge to develop the confidence to reach her

academic and professional potential,” mernitz says.

Thankfully, she got the nudge she needed at Alverno,

and she hasn’t slowed down since.

Reflections & hIghlIghts

For decades, Alverno has been recognized worldwide as

a leader in higher education. As we reflect on the past

academic year, it is easy to see that another new depth of

excellence has been met regarding our commitment to

teaching. While the following highlights provide a glorious

overview of the past year, the ultimate testament is in the

lives of thousands of young women at the undergraduate

level, and women and men at the graduate level who have

the power to change the world because they now fully

realize their full potential.

Alverno's campus remains vibrant, active and inviting. From

athletic events and highly acclaimed guest speakers to service

learning activities and performing arts series, there's always

something happening on or near campus. Enjoy a few highlights

from the past year.

School of arts & sCIenCesAs a vital part of Alverno’s rigorous core curriculum, the School of Arts & Sciences touches every undergraduate on

Alverno’s campus and equips students with the broad knowledge that is the hallmark of a liberal arts degree. The

School is home to 26 major areas of study and encompasses a diverse array of courses in four divisions: Humanities;

Arts, Communications and Technology; Behavioral Sciences; and Natural Sciences, Mathematics and Technology.

While many School of Arts & Sciences graduates go directly to work in their fields, others use their degrees as a

springboard to medical school, law school or other graduate/professional programs.

Alverno Interpreter Institute offers workshopsMental health interpreting. Palliative and

spiritual care. Navigating the ethics terrain.

These are the sorts of important topics

recently covered by the Alverno Interpreter

Institutes workshops. The institute is affiliated

with Alverno’s Spanish-English Healthcare

Interpretation Program in the World

Languages department. The institute is a

community resource for working interpreters

in any spoken or signed language pair, and it

helps those professionals earn the continuing

education credits they need for national

certification. The workshops are yet another

way that Alverno enriches the medical

interpretation field, ultimately benefiting

the community members who depend upon

interpreting services.

Math professors develop and share teaching innovation In 2012, professors from Alverno’s Mathematics

department received a National Science Foundation

grant to help students gain a deeper understanding of

linear algebra, using 2-D and 3-D animation software

apps. These math-focused apps are designed to increase

algebraic comprehension for Alverno students to learn —

through demonstration, interactive exploration and

visualization — the meaning of mathematics without

getting lost in notation, terminology and algebraic

calculations. Recognized as significant math education

innovations, Professors James Factor and Susan

Pustejovsky are now sharing these apps with students

and colleagues worldwide through invited conference

presentations and workshops, a dedicated website, and

the Mathematical Association of America’s Digital Math

Library for collegiate mathematics. The apps — which are

integrated into Alverno’s curriculum — cover an entire

semester of learning linear algebra, and aim to increase

the number of women who seek careers in STEM fields by

building their mathematical skills and confidence.

Students go abroad to study coastal citiesFor a semester, the students of INS309: Coastal

Cities The Baltic Sea studied the coast they call

home. From the Port of Milwaukee to South Shore

Beach to the Global Water Center, the class used

firsthand, outside-of-class experiences around

the city as the ultimate learning laboratory. But

the grand finale (pictured here) was an 11-day

trip abroad led by Jodi Eastberg, associate

professor of History, and David Brooker, associate

professor of Political Science, to compare cities

along the Baltic Sea. The trip brought students to

Poland, Sweden and Denmark, where they toured

coastal cities known for innovative approaches to

water research and conservation. Eastberg and

Brooker created the interdisciplinary course so

students could explore the relationship between a

waterfront city and its coast, including the impact

on culture, economic development, political

dynamics and the environment.

MBA program turns fiveRelevant, experiential, active learning.

That has been the formula for success

for Alverno’s MBA program, which

celebrated its fifth anniversary this

year. To mark the occasion, Alverno’s

inaugural MBA class reunited for

a luncheon in January. Those first

graduates are now among 150-plus

men and women who have graduated

from Alverno’s MBA program and gone

on to make a positive impact on the

business community in Milwaukee and

beyond. As the only abilities-based,

outcome-focused MBA program in

the region, Alverno’s program remains

sought after by business professionals

who are searching for an edge in the

marketplace.

School welcomes two new facultyNicole Maassen, BBA, JD, and Richard Tobin,

BS, MBA, CPA, joined the School of Business

last fall. Both teach at the undergraduate

level, as well as the initial MBA class,

MGT600: Integrated Management. Maassen

and Tobin bring to the classroom deep

experience from their previous executive

roles in the corporate world. Maassen, who

was named to the Milwaukee Business

Journal’s “Forty Under 40” list last year,

previously served as the vice president of

litigation and risk management at Assurant

Health. Before that, she worked for O’Neil,

Cannon, Hollman, Dejong & Laing S.C. and

at Foley and Lardner LLP. Tobin was most

recently assistant vice president at Fiserv,

where he oversaw staff responsible for

accounting and financial reporting, and he

previously held positions at Molson Coors

Brewing Co. and Deloitte and Touche, LLP.

New sales curriculum debutsWhether today’s graduates are selling a

product or selling their own skills during a job

interview, there’s no doubt that those who

understand negotiating and sales practices have

a competitive advantage. With that in mind, two

School of Business professors, Craig Miller and

Dan Matre (pictured here on left with Business

professor Carol Vollmer Pope), worked with

the director of sales at Generac Power Systems

to develop a sales curriculum. The School of

Business offered the first two new classes this

past school year: MKT361: Understanding

Personal and Professional Selling and MKT367:

Practical Professional Selling. Both classes

quickly filled up and attracted students from a

variety of majors, and faculty are planning two

more sales-related courses. Although these

skills benefit students in any field, faculty hope

the new curriculum will also get more women

thinking about sales’ careers, an area in which

women are traditionally underrepresented.

School of busInessThe ROI on an Alverno College business degree is manifold and

lifelong. That’s because the School of Business trains students not

only in the basics of the business world — economics, finance,

accounting, marketing, personnel management and more — it

also equips students with critical analysis, problem solving and

teamwork skills. Lively group discussions and assessment-based

evaluation ensure that students are deeply engaged and ready to

apply what they’ve learned to real-world business challenges. The

end result: Graduates who have the skills and savvy needed to

survive and thrive in the ever-changing global economy.

School of eduCatIonThe School of Education’s roots run deep: after all, Alverno first began

as a normal school to train School Sisters of St. Francis how to be

parish teachers. While teaching methods have changed considerably

over the past century, Alverno continues to be a trailblazer in the

education field. Frequently cited as a national model, Alverno’s

Teacher Preparation programs deliver powerful clinical and classroom

experiences with the self-evaluation tools that aspiring teachers need

to constantly improve their teaching skills. With more in-classroom

experience than their peers and the benefits of an abilities-based

education, Alverno's School of Education graduates enter the

workforce ready to make a real impact on the lives of their students.

Alverno grads dominate local teaching awardsThe Alverno community was delighted — but not entirely surprised — to see six School of

Education alumnae among the 10 local teachers honored as part of the Education Deans of

Greater Milwaukee’s 2013 Celebrate Teachers & Teaching event. The winners were selected from

hundreds of nominations and honored for their outstanding commitment and service to urban

education. Among the six award winners were Alverno alumnae Sonya Wasielewski '96, '07, of

Carmen High School of Science & Technology; Stacey Lange '08, of Walker Elementary School;

and Michelle Young '08, of Rufus King International Middle School. Honorable mentions went to

alumnae Jane Savage '10, '13, of Seeds of Health-Wind Lake; Dawn Liriano '12, of

St. Adalbert’s Elementary School; and Naquisha Mann '09, '12, of Young Leaders Academy.

The awards are yet another testament to the quality of Alverno’s teacher training programs.

Alverno offers free bullying prevention trainingWhen it comes to preventing bullying,

teachers, administrators and support staff

need practical tips, based on the latest

research. That’s just what the Alverno

College Research Center for Women and

Girls delivered during several free training

sessions last fall. The training was led by

Nancy Athanasiou '90, dean of Alverno’s

School of Education and curriculum

coordinator for the Research Center, and

Kayla Fraley '11, seventh grade teacher at

Whitnall Middle School and the center’s

curriculum writer. The half-day workshops

explored the characteristics and motivations

of bullies, victims and bystanders, as well as

the most effective strategies for coping with

bullying behavior and advice for talking with

parents about the issue. The training was

made possible by a grant from the Charles

D. Jacobus Foundation.

Improving curriculum and community relations for Milwaukee policeWhen the Milwaukee Police Department

launched a new educational initiative

designed to improve relations with at-risk

youth, it turned to the expertise of Alverno’s

School of Education to ensure its curriculum

was effective and engaging. Dean Nancy

Athanasiou (pictured here on left) and Sara

Zavadsky '12, '13, tweaked the new curriculum

for S.T.O.P. (Students Talking It Over With

Police) and conducted two officer trainings.

Since S.T.O.P. began in 2012, it has trained

more than 240 Milwaukee middle and high

school students as S.T.O.P. leaders. The seven-

week program aims to deepen students’

understanding of the role and responsibilities

of police — through crime-mapping exercises,

listening to 9-1-1 calls and learning about

basic city ordinances — with the ultimate goal

of improving future police encounters.

JoAnn McGrath School of nursIngAlverno nurses have a reputation that’s tough to beat. For more than 80 years, Alverno has

been training some of the best, most prepared nurses in our community; nurses who are

as competent as they are compassionate. The JoAnn McGrath School of Nursing builds on

that tradition of excellence by always searching for the most innovative and effective ways

to educate tomorrow’s nurses. And that’s why Alverno is creating a state-of-the-art Nursing

Simulation Center, which will open in early 2015 in Alexia Hall. With the help of the center’s

lifelike, computer-driven mannequins, Alverno's Nursing students will be able to practice their

skills in hundreds of medical situations, ensuring that they’ll be more prepared than ever before.

Speed networking event connects students and alumnaeAmazing connections can happen in as little

as 10 minutes. That was the takeaway for the

more than 50 students who participated in

Alverno’s first “Networking for Nurses” event as

part of the N383: Nursing Internship Seminar

this past spring. Every 10 minutes, small groups

of students moved from table to table, meeting

with alumnae nurses who work in public health,

orthopedics, wound care, CICU, pediatrics,

case management, hospice care and home

health care. The event was designed to open

students’ eyes to nursing areas they may

not have previously considered and to give

alumnae the opportunity to share their insights

with the next generation of Alverno Nurses.

Initially suggested by the Nursing Alumnae

Leadership Team, the speed-networking event

was a first for any Alverno major.

School redesigns CNS trackAlways looking to improve, Alverno’s Nursing

faculty recently redesigned the combined Clinical

Nurse Specialist (CNS)/Nurse Educator track to

better meet the needs of our local community as

well as new nursing accreditation requirements.

After closely studying new requirements for

advanced practice nurses, Alverno faculty decided

it would be more beneficial to split the combined

track and focus on the role of the CNS specializing

in adult/older adult populations. Wisconsin’s

population of older adults continues to increase,

and there’s a growing need for nurses who are

specially trained to meet the health care needs

of our aging population. The redesigned track

incorporates the CNS competencies with a focus

on direct patient care, program development and

leadership. The School of Nursing will also offer a

newly redesigned Post-Master’s Nurse Educator

certificate beginning in fall 2015.

First class of FNPs graduatesAlverno celebrated the graduation of its first

class in the Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP)

track in December 2013. Launched in 2011,

the master’s level FNP program fills a critical

community need: the greater Milwaukee area

faces a shortage of primary care providers,

including advanced practice nurses. That

shortage can lead to everything from longer

wait times for patients to more medical errors.

Alverno’s FNP program, which was created after

significant input from hundreds of local nursing

leaders, prepares advanced practice nurses who

can deliver top-notch patient care amid today’s

challenging health care landscape. And there’s

no doubt these talented students are ready:

100 percent passed the board certification

exam on their first try. The program’s first

graduates have gone on to work in primary

care, cardiology, endocrinology, occupational

health, convenient care and oncology.

Campus hosts Holocaust Remembrance ServiceIt began in 2002 with an audience of

no more than 20, but Alverno’s annual

Holocaust Remembrance Service has since

grown to become the largest non-Jewish

service in the Midwest. This April, more

than 900 people from campus and the

greater community — including busloads

of area high school students — gathered in

Pitman Theatre to hear Holocaust survivor

Walter Reed tell his harrowing story of

growing up as a Jew in Nazi Germany and

his life on the run, away from his family,

before he eventually made it safely to

America. As more and more Holocaust

survivors pass away, Alverno’s event offers

students and community members the rare

opportunity to hear a first-hand account of

the Holocaust and an opportunity to reflect

on what can be done to prevent such

atrocities from ever happening again.

Alverno launches new logo and brand messagingImpressions are made in an instant, and so

Alverno recently unveiled a new logo and

brand messaging that better reflect our

community and the many exciting things

happening here. The new logo — richly hued

in “Legacy Brown,” “Discovery Gold” and

“Innovation Red” — was created with input

from hundreds of members of the Alverno

family, including faculty, staff, students,

alums, administrators and trustees. More

than just a simple A, the logo includes

several elements that capture the spirit of

Alverno.

The new brand messaging document

includes key messages that explain and

support Alverno’s position as the place “for

women who want more.”

Students honor 9/11 victimsOn the 12th anniversary of the terror attacks

on 9/11, Alverno students were determined

to show they still remember those who

perished on that tragic day. Members of

the Alverno College Republicans awoke

early to place 2,977 flags — one in honor

of every 9/11 victim — in the College’s

Alumnae Courtyard. The students spent

more than three months fundraising and

planning for the somber display, which was

part of the Young America Foundation’s

Never Forget Project.

Alverno recognized for commitment to teachingWe know that Alverno is a special place, but it’s

terrific when others recognize it, too. For the

fourth straight year, Alverno has been ranked in

the top 3 in U.S. News & World Report's “Strong

Commitment to Teaching” category for regional

universities in the Midwest. Alverno was the only

Wisconsin college to make the list every year in

the 4-year history of the category. The ranking

relies on input from college presidents, provosts

and admissions deans, along with quantitative

data, and this marks the thirteenth year in a row

that Alverno has been recognized by U.S. News

& World Report’s annual rankings. Alverno was

also recognized for “First Year Experience,”

“Learning Communities” and “Senior Capstone.”

outstanding contributions to the Church and

society and who exemplify the Church’s vision set

forth in the Second Vatican Council. Kamenski

has spent several decades working as a musician,

liturgist and teacher at several local parishes,

and he is currently director of music and liturgy

and pastoral associate at St. Sebastian Catholic

Church in Milwaukee. He also conducted and

directed the music for the Archdiocese’s 150th

anniversary, and he directed the music for Mass

at Irish Fest and Festa Italiana and the national

Alverno pledges to double study abroad participationFewer than 10 percent of American college

students study abroad, but Alverno has joined

a nationwide initiative determined to double

participation in study abroad programs by the

end of the next decade. Led by the Institute of

International Education, the Generation Study

Abroad initiative is committed to increasing

American graduates’ international experience

so they can be more competitive in the global

economy. The initiative is a natural fit for

Alverno, which prizes Developing a Global

Perspective as one of the 8 Abilities. More

than 50 Alverno students participated in study

abroad programs last year, and College officials

hope to increase that number to more than 100

students per year.

Record basketball season capped off with Sportsmanship AwardIt was a thrilling season for the Inferno: the

women’s basketball team finished with a 19-9

record for the winningest season in school

history, and the program’s first postseason

victories earned a runner-up finish in the

Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference

(NACC) tournament. Alverno also garnered the

Women’s Sportsmanship Award for 2013-14,

based on votes by the NACC’s directors of

athletics. In addition, seven Alverno student-

athletes made the NACC’s All-Sportsmanship

Team: Courtney Cornella-Carlson (cross country),

Erin Dulek (softball), Ashleigh Sagat (soccer),

Kristen Speerschneider (basketball), Cali Trepp

(volleyball), Jamie Villalobos (golf) and Laeren

Yates (tennis). The All-Sportsmanship Team was

selected by head coaches.

The generosity of donors is felt

throughout every area of Alverno

College. In addition to beginning

construction that is the result of

the $30 million Promise & Power

capital campaign, Alverno has also

seen recent growth in the annual

fund which provides financial

assistance to students. All of which

allows Alverno to share the gift of

knowledge with others. On behalf

of students, faculty and staff, we

thank all of our donors for their

commitment, generosity and vision.

This listing reflects contributions

received between July 1, 2013 and

June 30, 2014.

Donors

There is much to celebrate at Alverno! From the artistic

groundbreaking event in March to kick off the campus

improvement project to the more recent grand opening

celebration, enjoy this collection of images from the last

few months.

promIse & power CampaIgnNearly 1,000 donors, including more than 800 alumnae, contributed to the Promise & Power capital campaign. Since its start, the campaign has set numerous giving records for the College. Perhaps none more impressive than the record-breaking amount donated by alumnae. JoAnn McGrath ’57, helped launch the campaign with a $5 million contribution, making it the largest ever by an alumna. Since then, alum giving has surpassed $8.3 million, shattering past records. To every donor, please know the result of your generosity will be felt by generations of students who learn and grow at Alverno.
