Now based in New Orleans, Lightwire Theater continues to create and deliver innovative theatrical experiences to audiences worldwide, including Hong Kong, Estonia, Canada, Belarus, China, Abu Dhabi, and Paris, where they were finalists on My TF1’s “The Best Le Meilleur Artiste.”

ChanticleerTuesday, November 28 | 7:30pmLive! SeriesCelebrating its 40th anniversary next year, Chanticleer was founded by tenor Louis A. Botto and named for the “clear-singing” rooster in Geoffrey Chaucer’s “Canterbury Tales.” The ensemble gained notoriety for its interpretations of Renaissance music and was later a pioneer in the revival of the Southern American baroque, recording several award-winning titles in that repertoire. Since Chanticleer began releasing recordings in 1981, the group has sold over a million albums and won two GRAMMY® awards. In 2008, they were named Ensemble of the Year by Musical America and inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame. Chanticleer gives approximately 100 concerts a year, appearing regularly in major concert halls in the United States, Europe, and Asia, as well as its home base of San Francisco. Chanticleer’s education programs engage over 5,000 young people annually; in 2010 they received the Chorus America Education Outreach Award. Their programs include: The Louis A. Botto (LAB) Choir—an after-school honors program for high school and college students; Youth Choral Festivals™ around the United States; Skills/LAB–an intensive summer workshop for 100 high school students; master classes for university students nationwide; and the Chanticleer in Sonoma summer workshop for adult choral singers.

She followed that with her self- titled sophomore record in 2008, and “100 Proof” in 2011. The latter was named the No. 1 Country Album of The Year by Rolling Stone. In the spring of 2013, Pickler partnered with dance coach Derek Hough and won the Mirror Ball Trophy on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars;” that same year, she also released her fourth album, “The Woman I Am.” She launched her home goods line, Selma Drye by Kellie Pickler, in cooperation with the Opry Stores in 2015. Her CMT docu-comedy series “I Love Kellie Pickler” which co-stars her husband (songwriter/producer Kyle Jacobs) debuted in November 2015. Pickler is a television favorite, having made guest appearances on shows such as “Celebrity Family Feud,” “Ellen,” “Good Morning America,” “Today,” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” and more. She is an avid supporter of the U.S. military, with eleven USO Tours under her belt thus far.

Singer/songwriter Phil Vassar has hit the Top 5 seven times with songs like “Carlene,” “Last Day of My Life” and “American Child” and topped the charts with “In a Real Love” and the perennial favorite “Just Another Day in Paradise.” Known as one of Nashville’s top tunesmiths, his songs other artists have taken to #1 include “My Next Thirty Years” by Tim McGraw, “She’s Right On The Money” by Alan Jackson, Jo Dee Messina’s “Bye, Bye” and “I’m Alright,” and David Nail’s “The Sound of a Million Dreams,” which Billboard named the #1 song in their Top 10 Country Songs of 2012. The Deanna Bogart Band – New Year’s Eve EveSaturday, December 30 | 7:30pmLive! SeriesBorn in Detroit, Deanna Bogart spent her early years in Phoenix and New York City, climbing on any available piano bench to plunk and play with preternatural panache. As a bandleader/singer/songwriter/producer/pianist/sax player, Bogart combines the best of boogie-woogie, contemporary blues, country, and jazz into a splendid blend she calls “blusion.” This unique sound has garnered her three consecutive Blues Music Awards as Horn Instrumentalist of the Year for 2008, 2009, and 2010, and an endorsement contract with Rico Reeds. She has won, at last count, more than 20 “Wammies,” the music awards for the hotly contested Washington, D.C., region. She is also a featured player in the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Revue, jamming with Tommy Castro and Magic Dick (founding member of the J. Geils Band), as well as prominent guitar slingers. Bogart has also lent her talents to play for U.S. troops in Iraq, Kuwait, and Egypt as part of the “Blues on the Nile” tour, including performances at Cairo University, the Cairo Opera House, and even a historic concert at the Great Pyramids. Her latest ventures include Blind Pig Record’s “Pianoland,” a newly minted DVD called “Everybody Has a Story,” and “11th Hour,” a CD released on Vista Records, a company she co-founded.

30 | 2017-2018 SEASON

Two days before Christmas 1926, a sell-out crowd of more than 1,500 people gathered at Frederick’s plush new movie palace — the Tivoli Theater. Built by the Stanley Crandall Company at a cost of $350,000, the Tivoli offered an atmosphere of refined elegance.

Theater-goers marveled at the modern centerpiece of it all: the magnificent Wurlitzer organ. Installed in 1926 at a cost of $18,500, it continues to entertain today’s audiences during silent movies and sing-alongs. The Weinberg’s is the only Wurlitzer in Maryland still in its original installation.

The Weinberg was Frederick’s first air-conditioned public building, all due to the 1939 and 1940 American Horse of the Year, Challedon. Locally-bred Challedon’s owner, W.L. Brann, and Dr. Edward Thomas, a race fan and patron of the Tivoli accompanied the horse to race in the 1940 Hollywood Gold Cup. At a pre-race party, Warner Brothers head Jack Warner was overheard saying he was going to bet $50,000 on the favorite. Thomas convinced Warner to bet on Challedon instead. When Challedon won the race and a hefty sum for Warner, Warner asked how he could return the favor. Thomas’s request was to install air-conditioning at the Tivoli, and Warner made good on his offer.

The Tivoli fell into disrepair during the 1950s. In 1959, Dan and Alyce Weinberg purchased the building for $150,000 and restored it to its former glory. By the 1970s, downtown Frederick was deteriorating, and the Tivoli struggled to compete with modern movie theaters. Its struggle reached a low point when storm-driven waters flooded the theater and downtown Frederick in 1976. The water peaked three feet above stage level, submerging the seats and floating the Wurlitzer onto the stage. Community members joined forces to salvage the historic landmark—organ and all. After sixteen months, the theater reopened as the Weinberg Center for the Arts, honoring the Weinberg family, who gifted the theater to the City of Frederick.

The Weinberg has drawn such famous names as Marcel Marceau, Hal Holbrook, George Carlin, Judy Collins, Tammy Wynette, Garrison Keillor, the Temptations, Michael Moore, and Tom Jones. Today, the center is owned and operated by the City of Frederick, with the support of the Weinberg Center for the Arts Inc. — a nonprofit organization created in 1995. Thanks to a successful capital campaign begun in 2008, the theater was renovated in 2011, once more restored it to its former grandeur.
