Education – Conferences, Seminars, Coursesand WorkshopsDesign and Construction of Steel Sheet Piling Seminar

PDCA would like to thank L.B. Foster and Hartman Engineering for the successful completion ofanother Design and Construction of Steel Sheet Piling Seminar. The course was presented byRichard Hartman, Ph.D., P.E., of Hartman Engineering. Dr. Hartman has over 40 years of experienceand is licensed as a professional engineer in 38 states. He has been involved in the research anddesign of new sheet pile sections for the past 15 years and, based on that research, holds four patentsfor sheet piling sections. Brian McConnell with PND Engineers, Inc. was also a guest presenter atthe seminar.

The seminar was attended by 65 individuals, one of the largest turnouts for the course to date. PDCAwas not only represented by program manager, Jessica Fasanella, but also by the PDCA of the GulfCoast Chapter vice president, Dean Story. The seminar was held at the University of New Orleans inthe auditorium of the engineering building. PDCA would like to thank the University of NewOrleans for the use of their facilities.

The Design and Construction of Steel Sheet Piling Seminar is IACET certified for 0.7 continuingeducation units and PDCA is a certified continuing education sponsor in the states of Florida, NewYork and Maryland. PDCA, L.B. Foster and Hartman Engineering are planning to host anotherseminar in September of 2015 in Florida. Please check the PDCA website, www.piledrivers.org, formore information and online registration for future seminars.

PDCA Deep Foundation Dynamic Testing and AnalysisSeminar and Workshop

PDCA, in cooperation with Pile Dynamics, Inc., hosted the first Deep Foundation Dynamic Testingand Analysis Seminar, Workshop and Proficiency Test at the new PDCA office in Orange Park, Fla.with great success. The Seminar on Deep Foundation Integrity Testing and Wave Equation Analysistook place on Wed., May 13, followed by the two­part High Strain Dynamic Testing Workshop onThursday and Friday, and concluded with the Dynamic Measurement and Analysis Proficiency Teston Friday afternoon, May 15, 2015.

The course was instructed by Garland Likins, P.E., principal and past president of Pile Dynamics,Inc., and Ryan Allin, senior engineer and partner in Pile Dynamics, Inc. and GRL Engineers, Inc.Twenty­eight individuals, representing 23 industry companies, attended the seminar and workshop.Twenty­six people took the opportunity to prove their knowledge by taking the proficiency test. 

The next seminar, workshop and proficiency test will take place on September 30 and October 1,2015 at the Pile Dynamics, Inc. headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio. Registration is now open. Please

Professors’ Driven Pile Institute

June 21 – 27, 2015 will mark the dates for the PDCA’s Eighth Professors’Driven Pile Institute (PDPI). The PDPI program consist of five intensivedays of classroom and field exercises on driven pile advantages presented toprofessors from universities and colleges across the U.S. and Puerto Rico. All attending professors are currently teaching engineering courses infoundations and will be able to take the information and experiences theyreceive throughout the PDPI course back to their engineering students tohelp them better understand the industry of driven piles. 

June 21 will kick­off the PDPI with an “ICE­Breaker” reception, sponsored by InternationalConstruction Equipment.

Desert Deep Foundations, led by its president Eric Hendricksen, will once again be present for thefield demonstrations. Eric will use an ICE I­30V2 diesel hammer and drive a 16­inch closed­endedsteel pipe pile. Additional demonstrations in soil sampling and SPT will be conducted by A CacheCorp, data collection by Campbell Scientific and CPT demonstrations by Conetec, Inc.

The PDPI is funded entirely by PDCA. Recently, PDCA requested your support via a fundraiserprogram. This year’s fundraiser was only the second time in 10 years PDCA has initiated such aprogram. It is not too late to make a financial contribution and all monies collected are dedicatedsolely to the PDPI program. View the PDPI fundraising brochure by clicking here and pleaseconsider making a contribution to this win­win program for pile drivers, the pile driving industry andfuture engineers.

PDCA 16th Annual Design and Installation of Cost­EfficientPiles Conference

The 16th Annual Design and Installation of Cost­Efficient Piles (DICEP) Conference is scheduledfor Sept. 2 – 3, 2015 at the Renaissance Newark Airport Hotel in Newark, N.J.

This year’s theme is “The Efficiency of Driven Piles and Sheeting for a Rapid Coastal Rebuild Aftera Natural Disaster – Lessons Learned from Hurricane Sandy.”  DICEP will offer nine professionaldevelopment hours (PDH) towards engineer’s license renewal, including PDH for New York andFlorida. The general session presentations will be multifaceted, including case histories, technology,research and funding mechanisms associated with natural disasters.

The DICEP conference is an engineering­focused conference, but contains presentations relevant tocontractors, suppliers, manufacturers, owners and public agencies. During the conference,participants will also have the opportunity to network and socialize with their peers from the industryduring the exhibit hall breakfast, breaks, luncheon and evening reception, all of which are included inthe registration fee.

Exhibitors are welcomed to register for the exhibit hall, which will be limited to 18 tabletop exhibits.All social and networking functions associated with the conference will be held in the exhibit hall,ensuring opportunities for exhibitors to present information on their products or services to theconference participants.

Shortly after the April meeting of the Pile Driving Rig Operators Task Force at the Hialeah Gardens,Fla. headquarters of Liebherr Nenzing Crane Co., the members of the Task Force met in Charleston,S.C. on June 1 and 2 for the continuation of their work towards assembling the Job­Task Analysis –

   

comprising five domain component, and identifying reference sources and manuals for the purposeof assembling the practical and written exam.

This meeting was hosted by Pile Drivers, Inc. and the PDCA of the South Carolina Chapter. PDCAappreciates their support and contribution.

PDCA Summer Intern Program

PDCA has created a Student Summer Intern and Cooperative Program for PDCA members. Summeris just around the corner and students at both undergraduate and graduate levels are looking forsummer employment.

PDCA members have had great success employing summer interns and/or coop students that areenrolled in building construction, construction management and engineering at college undergraduateand graduate levels. This program is a PDCA member service/benefit, and will be available only toPDCA members.

With the recent formation of the PDCA/USUCGER Joint Council, the intern program now has directaccess to advertise company openings through the 120 colleges and universities that are USUCGERmembers, which will help not only promote the program, but also facilitate a greater chance of

student participation.

PDCA and USUCGER have a link to the Summer Intern Form, which is available for companies tocomplete. The form will identify intern positions with your company during the summer and/or fallof 2015, and will include all necessary information about the position to allow interested students tocontact you. The information will be posted on the USUCGER website developed exclusively for thePDCA/USUCGER collaborative program. PDCA is still working with USUCGER to develop detailsof the coop program.

The intern and coop programs will help PDCA and USUCGER establish the connection betweenstudent and company. Company and student can then negotiate a short­term employer/employeeagreement that is satisfactory to both. PDCA and USUCGER will only act as facilitators and will notparticipate in any aspect of the hiring process – this is strictly between employer and employee.

PDCA Member NewsEquipment Corp of America sponsors the Bucks CountyVeterans Golf Outing

Equipment Corporation of America (ECA), a leading distributor of foundation constructionequipment, sponsored and participated in the Bucks County Veterans Golf Outing in Telford, Pa. onMay 18, 2015 to help fund free transportation for veterans to VA Medical Centers in Philadelphiaand Coatesville, Pa.

This unique service has transported 13,000 veterans and traveled 350,000 miles since being startedby the County of Bucks 12 years ago at no cost to the taxpayers. This annual golf outing fullysubsidizes the cost of the bus and per diem expenses for two bus drivers, and the CoatesvilleVeterans Affairs Medical Center funds fuel, maintenance, repairs and insurance. 

“Many of our aging and disabled veterans have no means of transportation to attend to their health,”said ECA executive vice president, Ben Dutton. “ECA is proud to give back to those that havesacrificed so much for our country.”

Ellis & Associates, Inc. reopens branch office in Daytona area

Ellis & Associates, Inc. (E&A) has reopened a branch office in the Daytona area at 2706 SouthRidgewood Avenue, Suite 2, South Daytona. The new branch office represents E&A’s commitmentto growing their business by expanding geographically in order to serve a steadily growing demanddue to the improving economy and significant projects in the area. With this new presence E&A canbetter serve existing clients, including the FDOT District 5 office, and enable the firm to provideservices in the immediate area as well as the growing areas east of Orlando.

E&A’s Daytona area office will be led by Bill Peters, Daytona project manager, who recentlyrejoined the company. Kathy Gaal, a longtime E&A assistant project manager in the Jacksonvilleoffice and Daytona resident, will assist Peters in the new office.

IHC IQIP expanding its global presence

IHC IQIP, part of Royal IHC, is expanding its global presence with a new office and yard in Perth,Australia. With the acquisition of its Australian agent Machinery Supply on May 4, IHC IQIPreaches a new milestone in its aim to be a strong local partner for its clients. The facility provides therental and sale of foundation, installation and decommissioning equipment and aims to increase itsservice level to clients active in the oil & gas and coastal & civil market in Australia and NewZealand.

Increasing its presence globally is an important part of the overall IHC IQIP strategy, says Jan AlbertWesterbeek, executive director of IHC IQIP.

“As our existing customer base grows to include clients that operate all over the world, the demandto be served locally also increases, ultimately requiring equipment and servicing to be availablenearby,” said Westerbeek. “Our intention is to develop into a true international company, using ourfootholds to be as close to our customer base as possible.”

Through Machinery Supply, IHC has maintained a solid presence in the Australian region for manyyears, already offering Hydrohammers, vibratory hammers and FUNDEX foundation rigs to the localcustomer base.

Atlas Tube/JMC Steel announce retirement of Marvin Phillips

Atlas Tube and JMC Steel would like to inform members of PDCA of Marvin Phillips’ retirementfrom Atlas Tube, effective May 15, 2015.

Marvin has been working for Atlas Tube as the corporate metallurgist since 2009, and has provided awealth of knowledge and experience in that role. His technical expertise has been appreciated bycustomers and co­workers alike. We wish Marvin the best of luck in his retirement and futureendeavors.

Marvin also served on the PDCA Technical Committee for several years, providing valuable input tothe committee as part of their IBC revisions to Chapter 18.

Company Wrench’s new Kobelco dealership is a large facility with a full service and partsdepartment along with plenty of office space. The new location has great I­20 frontage that intersectswith Highway 1 and has a total of 7.64 acres, which is made up of the office areas, parts warehouse,service shop, covered wash bay and with plenty of room to spare to house Company Wrench’s large

equipment inventory. The dealership will carry a full line of Kobelco excavators, Strickland buckets,Terex Fuchs material handlers, Gehl skid steers, Stanley and LaBounty attachments, Liugong WheelLoaders, Dressta Dozers and much more of Company Wrench’s comprehensive line of heavyequipment and attachments.

The new service department is 8,640 square feet to work on heavy equipment. The servicedepartment houses seven drive­through service bay doors with an 18­foot clear ceiling height.Connected to the ceiling in the service area is a Yale 5­ton overhead crane that can move from wall­to­wall. The service department at the new location is home to Tad Timmons – senior shoptechnician, Leon Davis – field technician and Eric Gambill – field technician.

The parts warehouse at the new facility is over 7,800 square feet. Ned Plunket is the parts specialistat Columbia, which carries Fleet Guard, Terex Fuchs, Kobelco, LaBounty, Sentry tires and groundengaging parts. Plunket has 30 years of experience in the parts business with 10 years of thatexperience in heavy equipment parts.

Michael Dooley is the general manager of the Columbia dealership. He has an extensive backgroundin the heavy equipment industry. He has a total of 26 years of experience in the industry and hasworked in sales, parts and product support.

The Columbia sales team includes Dick Mizzell, Bill Abraham and Dale Simpson. Mizzell is thesoutheast sales manager and has 28 years of sales and rental experience in the heavy equipmentindustry. Abraham has been with Company Wrench for three years and has 26 years’ experience inthe heavy equipment industry in sales and rentals, financing and as sales manager. The newestedition to the Columbia sales force is Simpson. Simpson has a total of 40­plus years of experience inheavy equipment sales, parts and service.
