Protecting the environment

Natural resources form the basis of ourexistence on this planet. The objectives ofour policy are for these resources to beused sparingly and in a manner which takesthe requirements of both nature and human-ity into account.

Our declared policy is integrated envi-ronmental protection. This policy starts atthe root causes and encompasses in itsmanagement decisions all the consequen-ces for the environment which could arisefrom production processes or the productsthemselves.

You too can help to protect the environmentby operating your smart in an environmen-tally responsible manner.

Operating conditions and your individualdriving style to a large extent influenceperformance output and the rate of brakeand tire wear. To increase vehicle rangeand reduce the rate of wear, please con-sider the following:

Rmake sure that the tire pressures arealways correct.Ravoid frequent, abrupt acceleration.Rdo not carry any unnecessary weight.Rremove ski holders and roof racks once

you no longer need them.

A regularly serviced vehicle will also helpprotect the environment. You should adhereto the maintenance intervals displayed bythe Maintenance System service indicator, along with other maintenance work descri-bed in this booklet.

Operating safety

Always read the chapter "Operating safety"as well as the operator’s manual. You couldotherwise fail to recognize dangers, e. g.due to high-voltage.

Danger of electric shock

The components of the drive system areindicated by yellow warning labels to makeyou aware of high voltage.

High‑voltage cables are orange‑colored.

G DANGER

The vehicle's high voltage electrical sys-tem is under high voltage. If you modifycomponents in the vehicle's high-voltageelectrical system or touch damaged compo-nents, you may be electrocuted. The compo-nents in the vehicle's high-voltage elec-trical system may be damaged in an acci-dent, although the damage is not visible. There is a risk of fatal injury.

Following an accident, do not touch anyhigh-voltage components and never modifythe vehicle's high-voltage electrical sys-tem. Have the vehicle towed away after anaccident and the vehicle's high-voltageelectrical system checked by a qualifiedspecialist workshop.

Only specially trained technicians maycarry out work on the vehicle. If orangeelectric cables or their connectors are

damaged, have them replaced immediatelyat a qualified specialist workshop. We rec-ommend that you use a smart service part-ner which is qualified for smart electricdrive for this purpose.

Automatic switch‑off of the high-volt-age system

The high-voltage system will be automati-cally switched off, in the event

Rof an accident in which the restraintsystems are triggeredRof a short circuit in the high-voltage

system is detectedRthat an electric connection in the high-

voltage system has been disconnected.

This helps to avoid that you get in contactwith high-voltage.

Performing work on the vehicle

G WARNING

Modifications to electronic components, their software as well as wiring can impairtheir function and/or the function of othernetworked components. In particular, sys-tems relevant to safety could also beaffected. As a result, these may no longerfunction as intended and/or jeopardize theoperating safety of the vehicle. There is anincreased risk of an accident and injury.

Never tamper with the wiring as well aselectronic components or their software. You should have all work to electrical andelectronic equipment carried out at aqualified specialist workshop.

i Read the information on qualified spe-cialist workshops in the operator’s man-ual. Work carried out incorrectly on thehigh-voltage system or modificationsmade to your vehicle could cause the sys-tems of your vehicle to cease functioningproperly.

Always have maintenance work on drive sys-tem and high-voltage system electronicsand components performed by a qualifiedspecialist. We recommend that you use asmart service partner which is qualifiedfor smart electric drive for this purpose.

If you have any questions about carryingout any type of service, turn to the adviceof an authorized electric drive smartcenter.

! Always have maintenance work on drivesystem and high-voltage system elec-tronics and components, such as controlmodules, sensors and connecting cables, performed by a qualified specialistworkshop with the necessary expertknowledge of electric drive vehicles andthe tools to carry out the work required,e.g. at an authorized electric drivesmart center. Otherwise there is a dangerthat vehicle components may wear morerapidly, which may void the vehicle’swarranty.

High-voltage disconnect device

The vehicle is equipped with a high-volt-age disconnect device : to disable thevehicle’s high-voltage system.

! The high-voltage system must only beswitched off at vehicle standstill byspecially trained service engineers.Otherwise the high-voltage system maybe damaged.

High-voltage battery

The high‑voltage battery is located underthe vehicle’s underbody.

Heavy blows against the vehicle underbody, for example when running over an obstacle, may cause serious damage and impair theoperating safety of your vehicle. If yoususpect that damage to your vehicle hasoccurred, you should turn on your hazardwarning flashers, carefully slow down, anddrive with caution to an area which is asafe distance from the road.

Inspect the vehicle underbody for possibledamage. If the vehicle appears unsafe, haveit towed to the nearest authorized electricdrive smart center or other maintenance orrepair facility that is qualified to work onsmart electric vehicles for further inspec-tion or repairs.

G WARNING

If the housing of the high-voltage batteryhas been damaged, electrolyte and gasesmay leak out. These are poisonous and caus-tic. There is a risk of injury.

Avoid contact with skin, eyes or clothing.Immediately rinse electrolyte splashes offwith water and seek medical attentionstraight away.

When the pressure inside the high‑voltagebattery exceeds a certain value, for exam-ple in case of a vehicle fire, flammable gaswill escape through a ventilation valve onthe vehicle’s underbody. This prevents thehigh‑voltage battery from exploding.

G WARNING

In the event of a vehicle fire, the internalpressure of the high-voltage battery canexceed a critical value. In this case flam-mable gas escapes through a ventilationvalve on the underbody. The gas can ignite. There is a risk of injury.
