The history of Europe
Bulgaria was founded in 681
Sofia is the capital city and biggest city in Bulgaria. After 1878, by decision of the city council, the city restored its Bulgarian name –Sredets, but shortly thereafter, at the insistence of the interim Russian government, the Greek name Sofia was returned. It is the 13th largest city in EU.
It is the main administrative, industrial, transport,
cultural and university centre of the country, where
1/6 of the industrial production of Bulgaria is centralized.
The liberation of Bulgaria and proclaiming Sofia a capital found the city with a population of about 12 000, muddy and misshapen streets and a number of private and public buildings with a distinctive oriental look.
Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) is the central bank of Republic of Bulgaria. It is one of the oldest central banks in the world, founded on 25th January, 1879

square in the central part of
Sofia. It is named after Alexander
I Batenberg.National Art Gallery and
National Ethnographic Museum
are situated in the former
tsar’s palace.The Mausoleum of Georgy Dimitrov was nearby from 1949 to 1999, when it was destroyed.
The Bridge of
Eagles is an
important and
busy juncture and
a bridge in the
centre of Sofia.
The bridge is
build over the
river of Perlovska.

The monument of Vassil Levsky is situated near the probable location of the execution of this Bulgarian revolutionary.
It’s good to laugh, to play, to live, to walk just like that – with a head held PROUDLY!
At first the park was called ‘Nursery-garden’, later it was renamed ‘Pipiniera’. Until 1885 the park is known as Tsarigrad Garden. After the birth of the heir to the crown Boris Turnovsky it was called Boris’s garden. Nowadays it has the same name.
The Archeological Museum – the oldest one in Bulgaria.
The building was built between
1882-1884 for the State Printing
House. The project is work of a
Viennese architect Friedrich
Schwanberg. In 1944 ,as a result of
air bomb raids, the building was
completely burnt .
The Monument of Tsar-Liberator, called also Monument of Liberators, is one of the most impressive monuments in Sofia, erected in honour of the liberation of Bulgaria in 1878.
Vitosha is a mountain in West Bulgaria. Its highest peak is Black peak (2290 m). Thus the mountain ranks fourth highest in Bulgaria after Rila, Pirin and Stara planina. The name ‘Vitosha’ appeared during the Middle Ages. It is considered that Slavs chose this name, changing the old names of the mountain.

The National Parliament
is the only legislature of
Republic of Bulgaria. It is
constituted by the third chapter
of Bulgarian Constitution of
1991. The building of the
National Parliament is one of the
first public ones, built after the
Liberation.
The Bulgarian traditional costume
has been a common name for the
folk dress of Bulgarians since
the Renaissance until the mid -
20th century. It reflects the
specifics, traditional culture and
lifestyle of the Bulgarian people.
