This Father’s Thoughts on the “Our Father” (Part VI)
Moses has a few favorite lines that he would use to describe the children of Israel; one of these was to call them stiffnecked. He meant
that they were stubborn and refused to turn toward God in repentance and trust. The next petition we find in the Lord’s Prayer can’t be
realized by anyone who’s stiffnecked, because it requires us to sweep our gaze from the God Whose forgiveness we’re beseeching to
our fellow men whom we need to forgive. Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. If my neck can’t piv-
ot, I can’t make the necessary move to accomplish what I want to have happen here.

Forgivenessgenuine forgivenessis an immensely difficult thing to do. To forgive someone means that we first recognize that
they’ve committed some act of injustice against us. All too often we feel we need to understand the other person’s perspective or rea-
sons for what (s)he did, or somehow to be able to rationalize the action. But true forgiveness isn’t about finding some mitigating factor
that lessens the injustice of the violation; it’s about recognizing the wrongness in all its fullness and still choosing to make amends
with the culprit. When we make supplication to God to forgive us our trespasses, we’re placing before Him the injustices we’ve com-
mitted. And these injustices aren’t merely imperfect acts that are the result of our being human, while God is infinitely perfect. Our
appeal for His forgiveness is not couched in the attitude: “Hey, I’m only human.” Our trespasses are acts of injustice that we commit
when we could have exercised justice. They’re the product of the choice to behave in a way that’s beneath the dignity of a person
blessed with free will and the rational mind to both appreciate and perform the good. The attitude shouldn’t be the blasé “I’m only hu-
man after all,” but should be “I am human, after alland that means I’m capable of better.” So we ask God’s forgiveness for our deci-
sions to act as though we’re less than what we truly are as His children, created in His image and likeness.

It requires the humility to recognize our deficiencies, coupled with the desire to improve, to outgrow those deficiencies, to change.
And it requires the hopefilled conviction that God will help us grow beyond these deficiencies. But before we can make these chang-
esor perhaps one of the most basic ways in which we begin to make these changesis to forgive others who’ve committed injustic-
es against us. There’s a great bumper sticker I’ve sometimes seen that says PLAY GOD TODAYFORGIVE SOMEONE. We’ll nev-
er have a real experience of God’s mercy toward us if we don’t understand the magnitude of forgiveness, and we can only gain that
understanding by forgiving others. How can we believe in God’s forgiveness of us as long as what mercy means remains a foreign
concept to us? We need to till the ground of our hardened hearts with the spade of compassion in order to open up the rich soil for God
to plant His forgiveness.

It’s not that God withholds His forgiveness until we’ve forgiven othersthat would be saying that God is only as magnanimous as we
are, or conversely: He’s just as petty as we are. No: God’s forgiveness is always there, but we can only experience it by forgiving oth-
ers. In all humility we recognize that we’re not the only ones who need forgivenessthat just as we desire the healing of God’s for-
giveness of us, others are every bit in need of that same healing. It’s an expression of unity with our fellow man, who’s in the same
boat as we arethat same fellow man whom we include in the “us” when we address God as Our Father. And at the same time as we
demonstrate our commonality with others, we also show ourselves to be children of God by our willingness to forgive others. We be-
come more like Him, and so reveal that we are kindred with the One we dare to call our Father.

A próxima

verdadeiro perdão não é tentar encontrar algum atenuante factor que diminui o sentido da injustiça ou da violação dos nossos direitos;

a Deus nosso Pai.

Vision Health, Part 2
Tips for Healthy Eyes:
Maintain your health “keep your numbers in check” like blood
pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar etc. Eat a healthy diet and
maintain an appropriate weight for your height. Sleep well.
Overall good health will help you maintain good eye health
See your eye doctor for regular exams, including dilation of
your eyes. Many common eye diseases such as glaucoma,
diabetic eye disease and agerelated macular degeneration
often have no warning signs. An eye exam is the only way
to detect these diseases in their early stages.
Know your family’s eye health history, this can help you and
your health care provider know if you are at higher risk of
eye issues.
Quit smoking or never start.Smoking is as bad for your eyes as
it is for the rest of your body.
Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun’s ultraviolet
rays. When purchasing sunglasses, look for ones that block
out 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB radiation.
When playing sports or engaging in other potentially dangerous
activities wear protective eyewear such as safety glasses or
goggles to protect your eyes.
Wash your hands keeping your hands clean is important when
it comes to your eyes, especially if you’re a contact lens
wearer. Some germs and bacteria that come from your
hands can cause eye infections.
Digital devices and Blue Light Here are some other tips to
help your eyes, if you have a lot of daily “screen time”:
Keep your computer screen within 20"24" of your
eyes.
Keep the top of your computer screen slightly below
eye level.
Adjust the lighting in the room to minimize glare on
the screen.
Blink frequently.
Take a break every 20 minutes to focus on an object 20
feet away for 20 seconds.
Important:
If you have any of the following eye problems, don’t wait for
your next appointmentvisit your eye doctor as soon as possi-
ble:
Decreased vision
Draining or redness of the eye(s)
Eye pain
Double vision
Floaters (tiny specks that appear to float before your eyes) and/
or flashes of light
Circles (halos) around lights.

and admit that you did something wrong. He smiles when
you forgive yourself and others. He frowns when you talk

do right.
