IntroducingyourWheelofLife:

Howbalancedisyourlife?Wellnessissomethingweshouldallstrivetoachieve.Primarilythisiscreatedthroughbalanceinalloftheaspectsofourlife,ensuringthatweareattentivetothedifferentwaysinwhichourlivesinteractandgiveusmeaning.Whenwethinkofachievingbalanceinthesedimensions,itisnotaboutspendingequaltimeontheindividualdimensions,itismoreaboutknowingwhattheymeantoyouandhowyouachievefulfillingtherulesorconditionsofhappinessorbalanceinthosedimensions.Itisimportanttorememberthatanythingwearedoingatanygiventimeisapriority;otherwisewewouldn’tbedoingit.Thisexerciseisagreatwaytolookathowwecurrentlyinvestourtimeandenergy,anddefinitivelyhighlightshowwewouldprefertospendourtimeandwhichareasofourlifewemaybeneglectingandareconsequentlyover-investinginothers.

Becauseweonlyhave1440minutesineveryday,itisimportantthatweplaceourtimeandenergyinthewaysthatalignmostwithourpurposeandgoals.TheWellnessWheel,orWheelofLifeisagreatwaytoreflectanddecidehowtomoveforwardtoensureyouaregettingthemostoutofyourday,asitguidesyourshorttermgoalssothatyouarecontinuallyworkingtowardsyourmid-to-longtermgoalsthereforeenhancingyoursenseofpurposeandfulfilment.

How:Thefirststep:Youmustdeterminewhatyourwheeloflifeiscomprisedof

Whatdimensionsmakeupyourwheeloflife?In1976BillHettlercameupwiththe6ModelofWellnesswhichincludedphysical,social,intellectual,occupational,spiritualandemotional.

BillHettler’s‘6Dimensionsof‘Wellness’outlinesthebroadcategoriesourlivescanbedividedinto(insomewayoranother).Oftenwefindthatatanyonetimewearenotabletopayequalattentiontoeachofthedimensionsofourlives.Wemayfindthatsomeaspectsofourlivesarebeingneglected.Whenthishappens,wefindithardtofeelsatisfiedorcontent.Forexamplewhenyouareconcentratingon‘gettingahead’inyourjob,youmaystophavingtimeforyourselforcannotfitinvisitswithfriends.Thiswouldleadtoanunbalancedlifeanddisharmony.Obviously,whenwearemanagingtoachieveourgoalsatworkandinourpersonallifewefeelwarmandfuzzyandeveneuphoric,becauseeverything‘clicks’!Belowisadiagramandexplanationofeachofthewellnessdimensions.Followingthis,youwillfindyourownwheelwhereyoucanidentifywhichofyourdimensionsarebeingneglectedandwhichyoucanaffordtospendlesstimeon.Wellnesschangesasoftenasday-to-day,soitisimportanttotrytothinkmorealong

SinceHettler’smodel,severalnewmodelshavebeencreated,forexampleTravis(2004)has12dimensionswhichincludehowwetakeenergyintothebody/mind(breathing,eatingandsensing)andtheywayswetransformenergyandputitoutintotheuniverse(self-responsibility&love,moving,feeling,thinking,playing&working,communicating,intimacy,findingmeaningandtranscending).

ThisemphasisesthatwhatonepersonbelievestobetheirversionofWellnessisperfectanddoesnothavetobesimilartoanyoneelse’s.Thegiftinthisexerciseisthatwhenwecannamesomethingandquantifyit;westarttounderstandmoreaboutit,werealisewehavecontroloveritandwerealisewecanmakeitbetter.Sochoosethethingsthatfitbestwithyouandthinkabouthowyouachievehealthandhappinessineachofthesedimensions.

Afteryouhaveidentifiedwhatdimensionsneedtobeincludedinyourwheeloflife,identifywhateachdimensionmeanstoyouandhowyouwouldachievetotalhealthinthatdimensioniftherewerenoconstraintsonyourtime,moneyetc.(seespaceonpage7)thencompletetheblankWheelofLife(seepage8).Foreachwedge,determinehowsatisfied/healthyeachdimensionis.Youdeterminehowhealthy/howsatisfiedyouareinthatdimensionofyourlifebyplacingalineinthatdimensionclosertothecentreofthecircle(0%)orclosertotheradiusofthewedge(100%).
