Transcript of UDL & TTC's Library Services

What is UDL?UDL stands for Universal Design for Learning.“Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a

framework for designing curricula that enable all individuals to gain knowledge, skills, and enthusiasm for learning. UDL provides rich supports for learning and reduces barriers to the curriculum while maintaining high achievement standards for all.” (CAST – Center for Applied Special Technology )

3 Principles of UDLMultiple means of representation

Multiple means of expressionMultiple means of engagement

UDL seeks to provide multiple means of representation in learningWHY?Patrons perceive or “get it” differently.

ExamplesIn our bibliographic instruction classes or Web 2.0

workshops, Some patrons would learn and retain more if given the choice of individual or group work for research or collaboration assignments.

Basically,UDL addresses different needs of learners. It is best practice to have one tool that multiple patrons

can use, not create different tools for several situations. Try not to separate.

Should be considered during the planning phase and not as an add on, however we can revised some of out current information / services to implement some UDL basics.

How can our library implement UDL?

One example.

The Library Blog.

Library Blog – Library HappeningsVery

Informative.Updated

Regularly.Provides good

resources.

Primarily text (except picture of library). One size text. Picture does not have Alt tag or explanation. No audio. No opportunity for font changes.

UDL issues (not present) with current blog

Examples of Tools to improve Blog.Odiogo – free text-speech reader for blogs.Accessibar – free firefox add-on that provides a

number of accessibility features including text manipulation and color manipulation.

Click,Speak – free firefox extension that reads webpages while highlighting the text.

By clicking the “listen now” icon, text is read by reader.

1. Create list of existing library services.2. Identify any examples of UDL principals already being used (i.e. some

of our electronic databases have readers)3. Identify any examples of services we need to revise or update to

adhere to UDL principals (i.e. captions needed on tutorials we created)
