From the Flight Deck — Depuis le poste de pilotage
FROM THE FLIGHT DECK
Since Porter’s very first flight, design has always been integral to who we are — from the efficiency of our aircraft to the style of our uniforms, and of course our brand mascot, Mr. Porter. In our “Design” issue, we explore the places and things that inspire us. First stop is New York, in The Pursuit (page 23), to learn about watch collecting in one of the best cities in the world for horolophiles (timepiece aficionados). In The Destination (page 34), we take a walk through the neighbourhoods of Washington, D.C., and discover architectural and design gems, both contemporary and classic. And in The Re:port (page 43), we reveal what happens to your luggage once you bid it farewell at the check-in counter. Just as we’re inspired when we travel, we hope that wherever your journey takes you, you find the beauty in it.

ROYAL WELCOMETreasures of a Desert Kingdom: The Royal Arts of Jodhpur, India, at the Royal Ontario Museum, March 9–Sept. 2
13
News — Nouvelles: Toronto, Washington, Saint John
If a sojourn to northwestern India isn’t in the cards, the ROM’s exhibition exploring the riches of the Marwar-Jodhpur kingdom presents the next best thing. Marvel at more than 250 artworks and objects, including a breathtaking diamond and emerald turban ornament, and a red velvet tent embroidered with gold thread, the oldest surviving example of its kind. It’s a rare opportunity. “These unique artworks have stayed in India under the care and custodianship of the royal family,” says co-ordinating curator Deepali Dewan. “When the objects return to Jodhpur, they won’t be displayed again for a long time.” » 100 Queen’s Park, (416) 586-8000, rom.on.ca

The Question — La question
In each issue, we answera question you’ve always
wondered about
ST. JOHN’S, WHY ARE YOUR HOUSES SO COLOURFUL?
Text by Wyatt Lang and illustration by Sandi Falconer
If you catch a glimpse of St. John’s as you fly into town, you might think you’re some-where over the rainbow. Homes across the city proudly display polychromatic schemes ranging from crimson to lavender, yellow and emerald green. But it wasn’t always that way. Local lore suggests that the brightly hued row houses once helped sailors find their way home, but until around 40 years ago most had muted tones and trim. (Outside of St. John’s, a common colour was plain old white, while net lofts, stages and stores were typically coated in homemade ochre paint.) With more pigments available, advances in paint technology, and a government-led program to revitalize the downtown in the 1970s, buildings began to adopt their now- signature jelly bean palette. The happy result? A reinvigorated cityscape awash with colours as dynamic and vibrant as its residents and its history.

A Place I Love — Un coin que j’adore: ChicagoA Place I Love — Un coin que j’adore: Chicago
Interview by Nina Kokotas Hahn and photography by David Johnson
JENNIFER PARK
The Place — The Chicago RiverwalkDuring her tenure with the exhibition design team for the Obama Presidential Center
museum, Jennifer Park cemented her commitment to use architecture to bring joy. A pedestrian waterfront experience set along the south bank of the Chicago River does just that.
Owner of Jurassic Studio and professor at Illinois Institute of Technology — Propriétaire de Jurassic Studio et professeure à l’Illinois Institute of Technology
What makes the Riverwalk your favourite place? The river is such an important feature, and the design of the walk is amazing, with the riverfront sculpted so you can access and almost touch the water as you walk along it. It’s a fantastic vantage point for seeing the city — its tall buildings and architecture, its use of and proximity to water. I love to absorb the urban fabric there. It’s a source of inspiration.
You were part of the design team for the Obama Presidential Center, opening in 2021. Tell us more. It’s interesting, because it was less about the architecture and design, and more about the people I came into contact with. We held several community presentations and workshops, so I met people with such different backgrounds who shared their stories. It was also a new experi-ence, because the design was driven by the narrative of President Obama. Of course I did get to meet him, so that was amazing, too.
What are you most excited to be working on now?Osito’s Tap, a small specialty bar in Chicago’s Little Village that’s opening this summer. I’m obsessed with pattern, ornamentation and composition. We’re taking inspira-tion from Mexican Talavera tile and transforming it into a pattern language we can use throughout the space. As architects, we can shape and kick-start these endeav-ours that are bringing more life into the community.
How does teaching at IIT relate to your work? It’s a passion that goes hand in hand with practice. It helps inform and inspire some of the things I do, and it challenges me to think outside the box. I enjoy working with young people, seeing their creativity and inspiring them to pursue the profession.
For visitors to Chicago, what’s on your must-see list?Millennium Park, including Maggie Daley Park, the Bean (Cloud Gate), and the Crown Fountain. I also recommend tak-ing in the view from the top of our tallest buildings: the Willis Tower or the John Hancock. My favourite destination for fam-ilies is the Museum of Science and Indus-try. The Modern Wing of the Art Institute is also amazing, not just for its architecture but for its artwork and exhibitions.

How does the Canadian prime minister’s residence compare with
Washington’s White House? We explore two legendary homes
The construction of the White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue was overseen
by George Washington, beginning in 1792. Because his second term ended before the building was completed, however, he never
got to live in it. John Adams was the first to move in to the neoclassical mansion, in 1800. Each successive commander-
in-chief has made his own additions and changes, and today the White House boasts
132 rooms, along with a swimming pool, a movie theatre and a bowling alley.
OTTAWA WASHINGTON, D.C.In 1866, 24 Sussex Drive was commissioned by a Member of Parliament as a wedding gift for his bride-to-be. In 1950, the Canadian government bought and refurbished the house as the prime minister’s residence, and in 1951 Louis St. Laurent became the first leader to move in. Subsequently, it has been home to every Canadian prime minister except Kim Campbell and Justin Trudeau. Since he took office, Trudeau and his family have lived in the 22-room Rideau Cottage while 24 Sussex undergoes assessment for renovations.

The Pursuit — L’aventure: New York
A collector of vintage watches catches auction fever in New YorkLa passion d’une collectionneuse pour les enchères de montres vintage à New York
We could play armchair psychologist all day, trying to figure out a collector’s passion for timepieces — the curve of a face, the scent of a vintage leather band, the movements and mechanics that once set the world in motion. Over my past two decades of collecting, I have yet to figure it out.
It’s clear, though, that no other city is more suited to satisfying one’s penchant for hor-ology (time and watches) than New York. Although tony Fifth Avenue is home to the largest concentration of luxury watch bou-tiques in North America, the city stands as

an inspiration in its own right. During a re-cent visit to the Audemars Piguet flagship on East 57th Street, I met three gentlemen who had travelled from Montréal for the weekend just to try on — and buy — the newest pieces from the Royal Oak collection, produced by the Swiss watchmakers since 1972.
As a city that thrives on diversity, New York naturally attracts different types of col-lectors — from devotees of dive watches or chronographs, to completists who aspire to acquire as many examples from one brand as they can. While mes amis from Montréal were happy to chat about freshly minted Audemars Piguets, vintage is my particular interest, and Manhattan offers up a plethora of events and experiences for retromaniacs.
Not far from the boutiques on Fifth Avenue, you’ll find three of the biggest fine auction houses: Christie’s, Phillips and Sotheby’s. When the spring auction season gets into full swing, this tony stretch of Manhattan becomes a microcosm of the watch world, as aficion-ados from all over the globe come to preview and purchase excep tional timepieces.
Watch collecting is an analog holdover informed by considerable skepticism. If col-lectors had $10 for every time someone asked, “Does anybody even wear a watch anymore?”

they could all afford a classic 1970s Patek Philippe Nautilus. But if they experienced the high drama, with buyers bidding outrageous sums for the rarest of pieces, they’d realize that collecting is a high-stakes game (in 2017, Phillips sold Paul Newman’s Rolex Daytona for US$17.8 million).
Even if your wallet isn’t flush with cash, auction houses give you an excellent oppor-tunity to hone your knowledge with the range of lectures, viewings and curated events offered. The breadth and depth of watches that come to auction are typically of museum quality, and like fine art they come with provenance, of the makers who crafted them and the people who once owned them.

New York also is home to Adam Craniotes, co-founder of RedBar Group, a community organization that holds social events for watch lovers. Although it has chapters around the world, including in Montréal, Toronto and Vancouver, the New York group has special relevance for collectors. Members meet once a week to share their favourite pieces, but the gatherings serve a deeper pur-pose than showing off. As a collector himself, Craniotes declares, “At RedBar, everyone is equal, whether they have three watches or 300, or if they have Timexes or Rolexes. Anyone who just wants to show off can go home.” What keeps them coming together is not the size or value of their collections but the size of their passion.
Craniotes, who owns an impressive number of Casio G-Shocks, was invited to speak at the brand’s 35th-anniversary event at Madison Square Garden. He shared the stage with a roster of celebrity fans, includ ing hockey legend Mark Messier; hip hop stars Cozy Boys and A$AP Mob members Ferg, Twelvyy, Ant and Nast; and Virgil Abloh, fashion designer for Louis Vuitton and Off-White.

According to Craniotes, collecting is more about sharing time than keeping it. No mat-ter how many watches I acquire (36 at the moment, but don’t bother burgling my house, as most only have sentimental value), at the end of the day one of the greatest adventures is flying to New York and gaining new insight about timepieces with every visit.

Over the past few years, Washington, D.C., has become an epicentre of cultural change. From the reopening of the contempor-ary Hirshhorn museum to the genesis of the high-speed tunnel between New York and D.C., the capital has always been prolific in its cultural contributions. Design projects here have stood the test of time, evoking the man-date to elegantly (if not ironically) focus on a dialogue that transcends mere politics while serving as a rallying point for all of America, in its many splendid colours.
Established in the decades after the Amer-ican Revolution, Washington has a rich history of bucking design trends, based on a master plan inspired by the splendour of Versailles. With an eye toward the neo-classical regality of Continental Europe, it rejected the colonial English elements that dominated more prominent towns such as Boston and Philadelphia.
Today D.C.’s architecture offers a low-rise respite from the endless towers that rule over Manhattan. Within this almost village-like feel lies a cosmopolitan metropolis teem-ing with vibrancy, diversity and creativity. Nothing evokes that sensibility better than the city’s notable cultural additions.

SMITHSONIAN NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY AND CULTURE
This square, tri-tiered structure occupies one of the last open sites on the National Mall. It’s clad in intricately designed bronze plates, which boast filigree patterns that reflect traditional African American craftsmanship. Designed by British architect David Adjaye, the exterior shades an inner glass facade that leads to galleries and theatres. The column-free space inside is drenched in light to showcase exhibits that chronicle centuries of the African American experience, including the civil rights movement and a history of black service in the U.S. military.
NATIONAL BUILDING MUSEUM
In a city of grand museums, we implore you not to miss this one. Built in the late 1880s, it originally housed the U.S. Pension Bureau, and later honoured soldiers who fought on the Union side during the Civil War. It’s anchored around a great hall with jaw-dropping 23-metre (75-foot) Corinthian columns and a terracotta frieze 366 metres (1,200 feet) long. Focusing as much on architecture and technology as politics and social justice, the museum hosts comprehensive exhibitions that interweave the history of architecture, construction and building with the personal stories of those they had an impact on.

This private art museum in the posh suburb of Potomac reopened last October, after a massive overhaul that added more than 200,000 square feet of exhibition space. Designed by New York architect Thomas Phifer, the renovation features 11 rooms crafted from stacked concrete blocks, positioned around a soothing water court and connected by a glass passageway. Set over 90 hectares (220 acres) of trails, streams, meadows and forests, it’s fit for a monumental collection that includes seminal pieces by Brice Marden and Mark Rothko, as well as landscape sculptures by Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Ellsworth Kelly, Richard Serra, and Jeff Koons (whose piece Split Rocker features 24,000 blooms with a dedicated horticulturist on site).

DEBORAH KALKSTEINThe Peruvian-born architect is the owner of Contemporaria, a modern design shop in Georgetown on Cady’s Alley, a cobblestoned street lined with high-end retailers.
Why has Cady’s Alley become a magnet for design stores? It’s unlike other places in Washington because of the architecture, walkability, history and mix of businesses. Unlike other up-and-coming neighbourhoods, it has an old-meets-new charm that attracts designers and creative types.
Where are the hidden destinations for design and architecture? I’m not sure there’s anything “hidden” in the city anymore. The National Portrait Gallery is an under-the-radar venue for art and architecture. The ceiling over the indoor patio, a piece of visual splendour, was designed by British architect Norman Foster. Best of all, it’s usually far less crowded than other Smithsonian galleries — and it’s free.
Which area best expresses Washington’s artistic vibe? The entire city is booming, and everything is packed 24-7. But I like what’s happening in places around the Shaw neighbourhood, 14th Street, the Wharf and City Center. They’re all incredible destinations for creatives and foodies of all kinds.

{The Restaurant} Le restaurant
REVERIE
Johnny Spero, the star of Netflix’s The Final Table, has made a name for himself with his Georgetown restaurant. The interior feels remarkably contemporary, down to the Nordic-inspired
design scheme, which leans on nautical blues and greys, complementing the open kitchen and the fumed white oak
parquet floors. Set in a former office space on an atmospheric cobblestone alley, the 64-seat spot is the handiwork of local
design shop Streetsense. The menu references Spero’s global background, at Noma in Copenhagen and Mugaritz in northern
Spain. His fried chicken sandwich, for instance, is garnished with foie gras and fennel, while a rib-eye for two wows with
pungent lovage and morsels of beef tongue. Best of all, although the restaurant is pricey Spero saves two tables each
night for guests who (yes!) may pay what they wish.

MIDTOWN CENTER
In a city filled with landmarks, the new Midtown Center, by hotshot New York firm SHoP Architects, makes a significantly modern impression. Set just four blocks from the White House, on the site of the Washington Post’s original HQ, the building features two mirrored, copper-clad office towers linked by a trio of suspended walkways. These criss-crossing sky bridges loom above a verdant public plaza like elevated railway lines while nodding, in the abstract, to D.C.’s rigorous post-Independence design.

Follow your bag on its own adventure and meet the suitcase that’s tough enough for any trip
The Re:port — Le re:portage
Text by Tara Franco Illustrations by Guilherme Henrique
Ever wonder what happens to your checked bag once you get settled in the boarding lounge? After you bid your luggage bon voy-age at check-in, it takes a journey of its own until you’re reunited at your destination. But where does it go? Who does it meet along the way? How do bags get where they’re supposed to end up? And what’s the best bag for the job?
Where Does Your Luggage
Go?

On the tarmac, bags line up for loading onto the aircraft — as if they’re standing by in their own lounge.

Luxury LiquidThere are few things more Québécois than maple syrup and a bust‑ling cabane à sucre, the tables overflowing with oreilles de crisse (pork cracklings) and pancakes. It’s no wonder that 72 per cent of the world’s maple syrup comes from La Belle Province, considered the crème de la crème of the syrup scene. During the 2011–12 season, thieves pulled off the great Canadian maple syrup heist, robbing the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers of 3,000 tonnes of the amber liquid, worth $18.7 million. Whether the trees are tapped using traditional metal buckets or the latest technology (kilometres of plastic tubing that ferries the sap to the cookhouse), the result is pure gold.
