STATUS UPDATE

TF-Storage meeting 5-6 March 2013 Berlin, Germany Peter Szegedi Project Development Officer szegedi@terena.org www.terena.org

Where we have started

TERENA activities...

Since 2011, TERENA has been actively looking into how NRENs

can offer cloud services.

› Task Force on the Management of Service Portfolios (TF-MSP) has investigated business aspects of NRENs offering clouds or cloud brokerage services.

› Task Force on Storage (TF-Storage) covers more technical aspects,

providing a forum for exchanging and promoting ideas.

› At the pan-European level, TERENA is also leading the ASPIRE foresight study, which includes the adoption of cloud services within the research and education community.

› develop a pilot activity for NRENs to experiment and gain experience with clouds and applications;

TCD pilot (May 2012 – April 2013)

› to explore possible deployment scenarios for a trusted storage service for NRENs:

› longer term sustainability for a potential

service;

› legal aspects and perceived trust issues related to the storage and management of the encryption keys and metadata;

› software scalability and performance.

In the meantime...

› Helix Nebula › EGI.eu › GN3+ SA7 › Many commercial offerings...

› Software › Solution › Service

TCD platform developments

› Maarten: › Tidy-up by summer. Better Scala, less

dependencies, smaller code. Github main branch is CLOSED!

› RNP: › OpenStack S3 API, ready to test, permission to

publish on TERENA Github. › GRNET:

› TCD–Pithos+ API integration is ready. To be demonstrated at TF-Storage in Berlin.

› CESCA: › Jclouds API development, n/a

Framework Agreement

Action plan

1. Continue and enhance Trusted Cloud Drive (as a storage middleware platform)

2. Procure storage through a framework agreement with several suppliers and offer this to the TERENA NRENs

3. Develop a system for monetising the service to cover the costs and provide an income stream

4. Provide legal advice for the NRENs on the use of the TCD

5. Facilitate community (NREN) provided storage to be shared across TERENA members

6. Embrace GN3+ SA7, Helix-Nebula and other initiatives (as well as commercials) with a view to integrating TCD

Slide 16

What’s next

› TCD concept is changing › From an end-user approach to a provider approach

› Initial experiences of the pilot:

› Building a reliable sw development community needs significant effort

› No way to compete with the features of commercial or other large community sw

› TCD alone is not enough, we need something more...

› Rough conclusions: 1. Position TCD as a storage middleware/gateway

that maintains the trust (operated by NRENs) 2. Tender for Framework Agreement with storage

backend providers (product bundling on request) at TERENA level

3. Talk to application developers (OwnCloud, PowerFolder) about integration with TCD
