- 8 Taiwan Telecommunications Industry Development Trend The
export output in 2005 is US$14.7 billion which is 96% of the total
production 76% of the manufacturers output is OEM/ODM-oriented
business Dual developments of broadband Internet equipment and
wireless consumer communication products Growing reliance on
Mainland China due to market and cost consideration Taiwans
communications manufacturers are subject to the standards of US,
Japan, and European countries due to the membership restriction
posted on Taiwan by ITU Key components are controlled by foreign
communications components suppliers and very few are made
domestically

plan to introduce 4G services as early as 2006 VSF-OFCDM single air
interface with adaptive parameters for heterogeneous environment
Target: > 100 Mbps in cellular @ 300km/hr > 1 Gbps in hot
spots & indoor Lab demo: simultaneous transmission of 4 HDTV
videos, at 25 Mbps each Completed 4G field trial (downtown
Yokosuka) in June 2004: DL average data rate of 135 Mbps, UL
20Mbps, at 30 km/hr in NLOS area 1-2 km away from BS Max. DL data
rate of 300Mbps was observed in LOS environment Plan to realize
much higher data rate by adding MIMO technology

Research Division): HMm (High-speed Mobile Multimedia System) HPi
(High-speed Portable Internet) 4G Mobile communication: Project
started Jan. 25, 2002 Boradband, high capacity, high data
transmission rate High quality color video, 3D video gaming, and
5.1 channel audio wireless network services 3-layer mobile
communication network architecture: Upper-layer (HMm wide area
wireless network): up to 100Mbps data rate at 250 km/hr mobility,
target at IEEE802.20 standard Middle-layer (HPi small area wireless
network): provide up to 30Mbps (2Mbps per user) multimedia data
service at 60 km/hr mobility, target at IEEE802.20 standard
Lower-layer (WLAN): up to 1Gbps data rate at stationary environment
MT R&D department invested 120 manpower per year for the
development of this 3-layer mobile communication network

from the government, industry, academia and research institutes for
the development of technologies to strengthen the competitiveness
of domestic communication industry Mobile phone, WLAN, SOHO router,
xDSL CPE, GPS, Ethernet switch, Bluetooth, Cable CPE, IP phone, and
Analog modem are Taiwans top ten communication equipment industries
in 2004 Taiwan is ranked number one in the world in delivery of
WLAN, Cable Modem,xDSL Modem, LAN Card, Hub, and SOHO Router
- Slide 43
- 43 Summary (Continued) The production value of Taiwans
communications equipment amounted to US$12.7 billion in 2004, with
64% for wireless communications products and 36% for broadband
Internet products; and is projected to exceed US$ 30 billion in
2008 Total mobile phone manufactured in Taiwan reached 80 Million
units in 2005, 10% of worldwide market; and is expected to exceed
150Million units in 2006, 16% of world market Form a dedicated TW4G
team for long-term 4G R&D work, focus on IPR creation, develop
