Goal: Students will identify and explain the three types of

symbiotic relationships that exist in nature.

Predator? Prey?

• Predator- The organism that does the killing in a predation interaction

• Prey- An organism that is killed and eaten by another organism in a predation interaction

Mutualism (+,+)

• Mutualism (+,+) is a relationship where both species benefit.

ex. An oxpecker rides and snacks aboard an impala. The oxpecker eat ticks living on the impala’s ears. This interaction is an example of mutualism because both organisms benefit.

Commensalism (+,0)

• Commensalism- a relationship in which one species benefits ant the other species is neither helped nor harmed– This is not very common

in nature because two species are usually helped or harmed a little by any interaction

Parasitism (+, -)

• Parasitism (+,-) A relationship that involves one organism living with, on, or inside another organism and harming it. – Ex. Fleas and ticks on a

dog

• Parasite- The organism that benefits from parasitism– Usually smaller than the

host– The parasite does not

usually kill the organism it feeds on. If the host dies, the parasite could lose its source of food or shelter

• Host- The organism that the parasite lives on or in

Apply It! Classify each interaction as mutualism, commensalism, or parasitism.

• Interaction 1: A remora fish attaches itself to the underside of a shark without harming the shark, and eats leftover bits of food from the shark’s meals.

• Interaction 2: A vampire bat drinks the blood of horses.

• Interaction 3: A bee pollinates a flower.
