What is IMLS?

We are the federal voice for the nation’s 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums.

FY 2014 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA)

$180,909,000 for Library Services includes:

The Alele Museum, Public Library and National Archives is named after “alele” basket.

Alele is a Marshallese traditional basket, a soft-sided plaited bag made from the leaves of pandanus.

It was used to hold the family’s most valuable possessions in Marshallese custom.

The mission of Alele is to ensure that the people have a place to spend time learning about their own history, the world around them, and their place in that world.

The valuables at the public library are the books, digital resources, and written materials that can provide a source of intellectual and cultural education for the people of the Republic.

The museum contains artifacts, photographs and other remembrances of Marshallese culture and history.

The national archives contain the written history of Marshallese government.

The building has been through many changes since the 1980’s.
