A bit about our history and culture….

Santa Maria originated from a military camp that established territorial boundaries between

Portugal and Spain in 1793.

During the Farroupilha Revolution came the first German immigrants, coming

from the city of São Leopoldo, trying to escape the battles. The city preserves historical

buildings such as the Nossa Senhora da Conceição Cathedral, the Treze de Maio Theatre,

the Mediador Cathedral, the Caixeiral Club of Santa Maria, the National Bank of

Commerce, the Union Society of Travelers and the Vila Belga.

Santa Maria hosts one of the largest federal universities in Brazil, the Federal

University of Santa Maria.

Federal University of Santa Maria:

UFSM was founded on December 14, 1960. It was the first higher education

institution linked to the Ministry of Education in the state. The university city "Professor

José Mariano da Rocha Filho", is located on RS 509, Km 9, in Camobi.

UFSM has 10 university units: Rural Sciences Centre - CCR, Natural and Exact

Sciences Centre - CCNE, Health Sciences Centre - CCS Education Centre - EC, Social

Sciences and Humanities Centre – CCSH, Technology Centre - CT, Arts and Letters Centre

– CAL, Physical Education and Sports Centre - CEFD, North Higher Education Centre -

CESNORS and a decentralized unit in the city of Silveira Martins (UDESSM).

In addition to these courses there are projects and programs in different fields of

study in human knowledge.

UFSM has:

106 undergraduate courses

11 distance education undergraduate courses.

29 PhDs, 47 Post-Doctorate (PNPD/CAPES), 24 masters and 17 specializations.

Three polytechnic schools: Polytechnic College of UFSM, Agricultural College of

Frederico Westphalen and Industrial College of Santa Maria, all of them offering

professional courses.

Getting to UFSM

First procedures

I. Obtain the National Register for Foreigners (RNE) in the Federal Police Office.

The Federal Police Office is located at Rua Vale Machado, 1361 Downtown – At the websitewww.dpf.gov.br you can check all the necessary documents and procedures.

II. Go to International Affairs Office at UFSM

Take with you the documentation obtained from the Federal Police, your passport and yourInternational Health Insurance in order to begin the enrollment process.

P.S: All students who have our Letter of Acceptance will receive documents in Portuguese explainingwhat they must know about UFSM and the city of Santa Maria, as well as tips on interesting things youcan do while you are here.

Visa information

Before you travel, you must obtain the student visa issued by the Brazilian consular representation in your country of origin.

Reception activity/Welcome

• The week previous to the beginning of the classes:

During this week, students have Portuguese lessons at Entrelínguas Laboratory. This is a

great opportunity to meet the other exchange students and also know a little more about

UFSM, as well as Brazilian language and culture.

At the end of the exchange

Up to 10 days after finishing your Exchange Program, we will send your transcript of

records to your home institution. However, the transcript will only be issued if you are

up to date with the Library and other services at UFSM, so remember to return any

books that you might have borrowed!

What the University offers

University Restaurant – RUForeign students can have their meals at the restaurants for a very low price, R$2,50. In

Santa Maria, there are three university restaurants: one downtown and two in the main

campus.

LibraryUFSM has a Central Library and sector libraries. To borrow books it is necessary that you

have the UFSM student card, which you can issue at the Central Library.

To make the student card you must have a copy of the passport and proof of enrollment.

Laboratories

UFSM has several research computer laboratories available to its students. To

access them you should contact the coordinator or the teacher responsible for

the laboratory.

Sports

The UFSM Sports Association offers activities in different sports including

football, gym and swimming. There is a cost per semester. For more

Counseling:

The counseling is a service aimed at helping the student in adaptation. The

“Ânima group” is located in the Education Centre, room 3155 and you can

contact them by calling (+55 55) 3220-8450.

Portuguese classes for international students

The Entrelínguas Laboratory offers Portuguese courses every four months. The

arrangements can be made once you arrive in Brazil. If you are interested in attending

classes, you should contact Projeto Entrelínguas, by e-mail entrelinguas@gmail.com, or

by telephone: (+55 55) 3220-9600.

At the end of the classes, you will receive a certificate and you may take the Celpe Bras

proficiency test. For further information, access the following website: Celpe Bras

Portuguese proficiency exam

The Celpe-Brasil is an exam that allows the Proficiency Certificate in Portuguese

Language for Foreigners. Developed and awarded by the Ministry of Education (MEC)

and applied in Brazil and other countries with the support of the Ministry of Foreign

Affairs (MRE), it is the only certificate of proficiency in Portuguese as a foreign

language officially recognized by the government of Brazil. Internationally, it is accepted

in companies and educational institutions as proof of competence in Portuguese. In

Brazil it is required by universities for admission to undergraduate and graduate

programs as well as for validation of foreign professionals who want to work in the

country.

Portuguese Courses For Foreigners

SAI promotes the International Friend program. This program helps the integration of

foreign students and volunteer UFSM students.

The obligations of a friend are:

•Early contact with the exchange student, knowing the date and time of his arrival, and

providing information about Santa Maria and UFSM;

•Reception of the exchange student on the day of his arrival, picking him up at the bus

station or airport;

•Help the exchange student to find a place to stay in the first days in Santa Maria, if

necessary;

•Explain about the location of UFSM, the Centres, the Library, the university restaurants

and SAI;

•Assistance with documents and registration at the Federal Police;

•Assistance in the contact with the Course Coordinator and the processes at DERCA;

•Assistance in your first purchases (cellular, bedding and food);

•Assistance whenever necessary;

•Maintain constant contact with SAI, informing how the adjustment process of the

exchange student is getting along.

International Friend

After enrolling at UFSM you have the right to pay half price for the urban public transport ticket.

To make your Student Card you need to take the following documents to ATU (Urban Transportation

Association of Santa Maria):

• Copy of proof of residence;

• And a copy of your proof of enrollment.

CESMA

CESMA is the Cooperative of students from Santa Maria where you pay less for

textbooks and school materials. To join CESMA you should attend a meeting and pay a

small fee. Documentation required: copy of passport, 2 photos and a copy of the

proof of enrollment at UFSM.
