President — Darla BostickIt is a pleasure to present an exhibition composed of the quality, expertise and range that this show encompasses. For more than 30 years SWA hosted a national exhibi-tion. Three years ago the possibility of an international show hit the radar and we were excited about the idea. Proving the arts transcend man-made boundaries, we had en-tries from as far away as Malaysia and Hawaii the first year. This year we reached those plus China and Italy. We also had participation from 15 states. They say it takes a vil-lage to raise a child. I would amend that to say it takes a village to make an exhibition of this scope a success. Diane Petrushka is to be commended for her hard work, as well as all those who participated in the prospectus, advertising, notifications, hang-ing, label, catalog and certificate production, management of monies, membership and signature records, sponsorship participation and associated workshop. Of course, thanks go to Joyce Hicks who had the ultimate say as juror to determine the look of the show. I hope you enjoy the works. They represent the joys of life—kids and dogs, great food, music, beautiful places and interesting events. There were many worthy entries for which our walls simply did not have enough space. We hope to make next year’s exhibition even better and sincerely hope the entrants this year will return. I thank everyone for making our biggest event of the year a stellar one, and one of which to be very proud. Congratulations also to our new signature members!
Exhibition Chairperson – Diane PetrushkaShowcasing the creative talent of so many artists became an inspiration...as well as a revelation for the time, energy, and need of volunteers. My sincere gratitude to the board members who helped with this exhibition: notification and handling of finances. A special thanks to my daughter, Kira, (and her computer skills) who prepared the juror presentation. Last but not least, thanks to my installation committee and to the Fort Worth Central Library for a lovely venue.
Appropriately, I read somewhere.....”ART is the mirror we hold up to Society”
Juror – Joyce Hicks, AWSJuroring the 2013 International Exhibition for the Society of Watercolor Artists was an honor and privilege and also a very challenging experience. Bringing a show of this size and caliber together requires tremendous effort and I offer my sincere admiration to the board and volunteers who gave of their time and energy to insure its success.
I spent several days reviewing the entries many times before finally settling on 50 works of art that showed great diversity of subject, style and approach. When I juror a show I look for paintings that express the personal vision and inner spirit of the artist as well as advanced technical skill, exciting composition and creative energy. I want a painting that communicates the artist’s joy in re-creating his subject in a unique way. Lastly I look for paintings that leave me with a deep, long lasting impression. Viewing the entries was pure pleasure but because of their exceptional quality the elimination process was quite difficult.
For those who did not make this year’s cut it is important to remember that evaluating art is one juror’s purely subjective opinion, and while it may be disappointing do not let it keep you from entering your work again in the future. I want to extend my sincere congratulations to the fine artists whose beautiful paintings make up this year’s outstanding show.

SOCIETY OF WATERCOLOR ARTISTSP O BOX 471571, FORT WORTH, TEXAS
WWW.SWA-WATERCOLOR.COM
The Society of Watercolor Artists (SWA) is the only art association dedicated exclusively to water media in Tarrant County. Having celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2011, SWA continues to draw national attention to each of its juried annual exhibitions: the International Exhibition as well as the Membership Exhibit. This is the 2nd International Exhibition. Signature status is awarded to those artists who are juried into five SWA exhibits while maintaining a current membership. Monthly meetings are held at the UNTHSC and further the education of water media use through live demonstrations.
