How to get to outcomes

Person centred approaches– From child or young person’s point of view– Listening more than talking– Talking about aspirations– What’s working– What’s not working– What is important to them– What is important for them

It’s a balancing act

What is important to a child/young person is what they want to do, to lead a happy and fulfilled life

What is important for the child/young person is what they need to help them be healthy, happy and safe.

Important to

What the child or young person says in words or through their behaviours about what really matters to them.

Important for

The things that help the child or young person to learn, stay healthy and safe, whether it is important to them or not.

I really like to eat chocolate It is important for me to keep healthy

The outcomes sum:What is working/not working

Child or young person’s aspirations

Parents’ aspirations

What is important to them

What is important for them

What is reasonable but challenging to achieve in the next 2-3 years

What are the barriers to achieving this – need

The outcomes

Using person centred tools to develop quality outcomes

Watch out for a solution pretending to be the outcome!!

‘To have a travel buddy to help me travel independently’

Checks …

2. What would it do for you?

3. What would it make possible for you?

Would you recognise itif you saw it?

So let’s have a go

Imagine you are working with these children/young people and their families to develop person centred outcomes

Take each ‘outcome’ and test it against the checklist

How could the outcomes be improved?
