This presentation assumes you have already seen SharePoint 2010

and the new user interface…

If you haven’t, check out ‘SharePoint 2010: What’s New’

What is a Content Type?

That’s a content type

Every time you click ‘New’ in a list or library, you use a Content Type to create a new item.

The default content types don’t do much.

In a document library, they provide you with a blank Word template and basic

metadata – the document Title.

Create your own Content Types

• Apply a template• Define metadata (columns)• Configure retention and auditing• Set-up a workflow

Configure your document library to use content types

• Go to Library Settings and select Advanced Settings• Switch ‘Allow management of content types?’ to ‘Yes’

Now you can add your own content types to the library

Content Types can be created per site or per site collection

…so far, so same as SharePoint 2007

Content Type Syndication Hub

• Assign one (and only one) site collection as the hub• All content types created in the hub are available for

re-use across all other site collections

…new to SharePoint 2010

Content Type Syndication Hub

• Configured under Central Admin in the Managed Metadata Service (MMS) properties

• Once configured, cannot be changed (without creating a new MMS)

Tip: Create a dedicated site collection for the hub
